The Spectacle Blog

While I don’t want to end the year on a down note I would like to draw your attention to a disturbing trend.

It seems that incidences of anti-Semitism are on the rise in this country. According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Jews were targeted for hate crimes more frequently than any other group. In 2009, of 37% of all hate crimes committed in the Empire State were directed against Jews. With regard to hate crimes motivated by religious affiliation, Jews were targeted 85%. Most of the hate crimes directed against Jews were crimes against property (presumably synagogues and Jewish community centers) although more than half the incidents involved threats and assault against Jews. To put this figure into perspective, Muslims in New York State were targeted 1.6% of the time. While the report notes that such figures are underreported within the Muslim community one still cannot ignored the vast statistical differential.

It is also hardly an isolated trend. While hate crimes in Los Angeles County decreased overall in 2009, anti-Semitic vandalism rose nearly 50% from 2008. So while Jews were targeted 88% of the time, Muslims were targeted 3% of the time. Yet Los Angeles City Council saw fit to pass a resolution condemning Islamophobia while making no mention of the far more significant increase in incidents of anti-Semitism.

The FBI hate crime statistics tell a similar story. Jews were the targets of 71.9% of all religious hate crimes reported in the U.S. last year. Conversely, Muslims were the target of 8.4% of religious hate crimes. Interestingly, when Israel is criticized for its actions the word “disproportionate” or “disproportionately” are often used. Well, given that Jews comprise just over 2% of the U.S. population one must then conclude that Jews are “disrproportionately” targeted where it concerns crimes committed against people and their property because of religious affiliation.

Now unlike Whoopi Goldberg (who while appearing on The O’Reilly Factor in November dismissed the fact that Jews are more frequent targets of hate in this country than Muslims) I am not trying to trivialize hate crimes that have occurred against Muslims in this country. Far from it. Anyone stupid enough to commit vandalism against a mosque or an Islamic community center or wantonly accosts, threatens or assaults someone simply because they are Muslim deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Yet we do ourselves a disservice to pretend this country is awash in Islamophobia. Nor for that matter is this country rife with anti-Semitism. Outside of Israel, the United States is probably the least anti-Semitic nation on earth and I think most Americans would like it to stay that way.

That said I am fully supportive of being vigilant against attacks towards American Muslims and their property. But it is clear to me that at least for the time being we need to direct greater attention and resources towards combating anti-Semitism in the U.S.

Are you sure that many of these, as well as the Italian Hate Crime statistics, are verbal and attributable to you and Guardiano?

C Bowen| 12.31.10 @ 7:56PM

But what were the love crime statistics?

Ned the Red| 12.31.10 @ 8:58PM

I hear "Assault with a Friendly Weapon" crimes were up. Reports say most were committed by men in their sixties and seventies who were prescribed ED drugs.
Advocates who are alarmed by this trend want to insist that all older gentlemen who take these drugs have their junk colored florescent orange, like toy guns, so no one will be frightened when they are confronted with one.

Occam's Tool| 1.1.11 @ 4:45AM

The "Love Crimes" were committed by members of "The Religion of Peace." In Norway and sweden that commit the vast majority of rapes.

tiredofbarry| 12.31.10 @ 9:22PM

Seriously? These are the only comments people can come up with for this disturbing snapshot of America? Well I'll add my two cents then: we are the mirror image of Weimer Republic Germany just prior to the Nazi takeover. Americans are swallowing double speak and racist propaganda from the present ruling cabal as though it were candy. I myself have witnessed a group of screaming Muslim and pro-Muslim students at a CUNY college screaming slogans like "Hitler did not go far enough." Where does this end? When will people see that our government is dangerously close to a home grown version of national socialism?

TomSwift| 12.31.10 @ 9:40PM

It's probably because the hate-crimes that target Muslims are committed by whites while the hate-crimes that target Jews are committed by Muslims, Mexicans, Africans, etc. Hence the media reports islamophobia but says nothing about the Jews. Anyone got any stats to see if I'm right or not?

Charles Martel| 1.3.11 @ 3:24PM

That is my suspicion as well, and I would like to see statistics correlating the perpetrators and the victims.

Booger| 12.31.10 @ 11:46PM

Anti-semitism seems most common in liberal bastions of this country (NY and LA) and bi-coastal. Not much here in flyover country. And yes, there is a sizable Jewish community complete with a couple of synagogues where I live. Of course we are also a right-to-carry, shall-issue, pack 'em if you got 'em state where firearms are concerned. We also have a Krav Maga school here (IDF martial arts). Maybe that makes a difference.

Cordially,

Booger

Occam's Tool| 1.1.11 @ 12:24AM

To the best of my knowledge, it's worst in San Francisco. No one is advocating a ban on circumcision in Alabama. Wish we had a krav maga school near me.

Eric Cartman| 1.2.11 @ 12:51PM

Everywhere Liberals ooze together in their group hatefests wearing their "Peace & Love" tee-shirts, you'll find antisemitism. They tell each other how wonderful they are, give each other awards and then drive off in their Priuses with the COEXIST and Stop the Hate rainbow bumper stickers to their rent subsidized lofts and coop-health clinics. Truly disgusting aholes who must be met with force when the time comes.

Mimi| 1.1.11 @ 2:04PM

Hi BOOG...Happy new Year! I got a idea of a letter or two. Seems the "Pres" told the Republicans they had better work with the DEMS...My oh my...All those defeats don't count... they got to get on the LIBBY band-wagon... more decree's and fiat stuff!!! The T-PARTY just hit town to fix the "UPSIDE-DOWNERS!!!

Le Cracquere| 1.3.11 @ 9:21AM

Maybe. But though I share your sentiments, Boog, the main reason is probably that the bicoastal "liberal bastions" tend to have the largest & densest Jewish populations. Makes sense that the crime is most common where the targets are most common.

PCC| 1.1.11 @ 12:37AM

Hate crimes against any person or group are to be deplored.

However, before we start comparing modern-day America with the pre-Nazi Weimar republic, let's look a little bit deeper into the stats.

According to the article that underpins Mr. Goldstein's blog post, NYC averaged six "hate crimes" per week.

Of these six weekly crimes, approximately 1.5 were assaults, 2.0 were "intimidation (threats)" and 2.5 were vandalism.

So, in a typical week of NYC mayhem 2010 style, fewer than 2 people per week were punched in the nose because they walked through the wrong neighborhood at night or some drunken idiot outside a nightclub didn't like their ethnic or racial background.

Compared to a generation or two ago, that's a miracle!

Alex 0^0| 1.1.11 @ 5:44AM

Two things to note:

1) according to conservatives, there is no such thing as "hate crime" and hate crime laws are unconstitutional.

2) behind closed doors, people still talk about Jews with the same animus that they talk about gays openly. All the old prejudices and stereotypes about Jews are still in currency, except they're no longer openly stated.

Jack Bauer| 1.1.11 @ 9:57AM

Two things to note:

1) You're a tool.
2) Behind closed doors, you're still a tool.

Rhymes With Right | 1.1.11 @ 10:30PM

Jack, I respectfully disagree.

Tools are good for something.

Alex is good for nothing.

Jack Bauer| 1.3.11 @ 7:22AM

RWR -- True!

Le Cracquere| 1.3.11 @ 9:25AM

Two things to note:

1. Saying that laws against X are problematic doesn't mean there's no such thing as X, or that X shouldn't be called out, condemned, and prosecuted under existing laws that cover it adequately.
2. Alex apparently spends his time behind different closed doors than I do--and some damned peculiar ones, if you ask me.

Mike N| 1.1.11 @ 7:39AM

Funny, isn't it - These liberal Democrats who so celebrate Stalin and Castro - have no tolerance for those they disagree with (a.k.a. Jews.) I suppose we Christians should be happy they only mock us.

martin j smith| 1.1.11 @ 8:27AM

The truth about crimes motivated by antipathy towards any group is very difficult to ascertain because very rarely do criminals admit: Yeah, I punched the guy because he was.......
And, in my opinion "hate Crimes" are selectively utilized in terms of labeling. For example: There was an alleged series of anti- Mexican "hate Crimes" but no photos of suspected perps until it appeared that the people envolved were people of color and never details were given. I strongly suspect that these " hate crimes " were either gang related or possibly Black youth animosity against Hispanics( its the economy stupid ) but that is only me. the point is that Hate Crimes" exist only for " minorities" or Muslims not against Jews for example ( who are all " White" and deserve to be beaten any way right ?
As to the truth of what is happening out there: There is none and as for the atmosphere for Jews (I know from first hand experience ) the so called "Golden Age" in America for opportunity is over for Jews. This administration in Washington and its shadow government --I have a problem with it.
Not only of its policy towards Israel, way beyond that its antipathy for anyone who disagrees and who wants to speak out and g-d forbid vote !!!!!!!!!

Anthony| 1.1.11 @ 9:15AM

First off, there is no such thing as a "hate crime", this has to be the dopiest idea the left ever pulled out of Orwell. Secondly- if we must accept that two and two are five-the statistics stated do not prove hate crimes are up but that the reporting of so-called hate crimes is up.

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.1.11 @ 9:43AM

Anthony,
I must disagree with your terminology. "Hate Speech" may be dopey "...but names can never hurt me..."
But
"hate crimes" are very real... check out Germany circa 1943.

Aaron, of course they are. The Obama admin. has set the hounds on Israel and they even bay on TAS from time to time.

Anthony| 1.1.11 @ 11:08PM

If the Nazis killed millions of people, does it matter whether it was done out of hate or some other motivation? If someone is mugged does the pipe upside his head hurt more if the mugger didn't like the color of his skin or the theological bent of his church? Thought crime is a dangerous road to go down, of course we're already well down the path and probably can't stop it.

Timothy L. Pennell| 1.1.11 @ 10:01AM

Of course. There's a BLACK MUSLIM in the White House. He can say he's a Christian, all he wants. But he was BORN MUSLIM. He spent YEARS, growing up in Muslim Countries. Going to Muslim Schools, learning how to HATE JEWS. These are FACTS. Everything he does, he does for the Muslims.
His 1st Interview after his Election was to Al Arabia. His 1st overseas trips were to Turkey, Jordan and Egypt. He just came bake from his old stomping grounds in Indonesia.
NASA is now conducting Muslim Self Esteem missions, instead of Missions to Space. He's for the VICTORY MOSQUE at Ground Zero. He wants the JEWS to stop building in their own Capital. He asks the Muslims to do NOTHING. He told George Stephanopoulos that "The Muslim Call To Prayer was the most beautiful sound in the world". And, then, like any good Christian, he recited it, with a big smile on his face.
This guy, like a LOT of Black Political Figures (David Dinkin's reign in NYC, comes to mind) is a GREEN LIGHT for HATE ATTACKS against JEWS. His "Community Outreach" guy is AL SHARPTON. The guy RESPONSIBLE for the POGROM against the JEWS in Crown Heights. His followers, stalking the streets "Looking for JEWS TO KILL".
His 20 Year relationship with the Virulent ANTI-SEMITE - Jeremiah Wright. His friendship with Virulent ANTI-SEMITE - Louis Farrakhan. His Friendship with JEW KILLER - Khalid Rashidi.
What did anyone think was gonna happen?
He's the Jew Hater In Chief.
And the Green Light means GO.

Oldefarte| 1.1.11 @ 10:06AM

Wonder if those hate crimes against Jews statistics included the 9/11/01 attack on NYC's twin towers because of that city's sizable proportion of Jews? The Jews of this country have heavily contributed to this country and its society, as doctors, lawyers, business entrepreneurs, builders, artists, architects, etc. If Muslims would follow the example of same and build/create/establish etc things instead of DESTROYING THINGS, we'd all benefit. Historically, Jews have suffered disproportionately to other groups throughout the world, and to think that they are now having to do so at the hands of Muslims in this country is sickening and needs to futuristically be dealt with in a political and legal sense!!!!!!

martin j smith| 1.1.11 @ 10:10AM

I will offer purely an opinion ( perhaps a better word would be impression ) I sense ( that means an impression for those who do not have a dictionary ) that major Jewish organizations such as ADL and others have been relatively quiet with regard to Obama towards Israel. And, I al;so have the impression ( that would be an opinion ) that in the fine city of NYC unless you are Black,Hispanic, Gay or Muslim or possibly the exception of a female Caucasian ( ? ) cases of " Hate Crimes" are kept under wraps--meaning under reported in the press or media if it against a white male Jew or otherwise for ethnic reasons.
In fact in many cases these incidents are not reported at all. The silence of Jewish organizations in this country tells it all for me. My theory has been and still I believe it is that many Jewish organizations fear Obama retaliating in some form. Obama is not exactly Mr Nice in general towards anyone who dares disagree and he send his hounds to attack such as in the media.

Oldefarte| 1.1.11 @ 11:40AM

Of course these crimes against Jews are UNDERREPORTED, since liberal MSM organizations are now more favorable to the soup-dejour Muslims as their preferred victims of choice. The mistake that Jews [and many others as well] made was in majoritively supporting our current president [who is about as Christian as I am an alien from the planet Mars]. His subversive trojun-horsed style election facilitated by the MSM is or should be an imbarrassment to us all. The Muslims have now successfully established one of their own inside our White House and in control of our government. It was evident to me the November 2008 pre-election that this man was/has been financially supported, educated and programmed to eventually become exactly what he now is, and that is THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This is why his long form birth certificate, his college and law practice documatation, etc has been keep from the public view purposely; why he spent twenty years in attendance inside a so-called Christian church; why he has historically been associated with known 1960's radical/extremist left wing idologues and also corrupt Chicago business/political people; why a well known Catholic political/extremely wealthy Massachusetts family of the Democratic Party saw fit to financially/politically support him for president; why recently he has purposely twice demonstrated his Christian credentials after numerous/previous criticisms for his lack of same;etc. IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE, FOLKS [or maybe it is for some people]! Many of those among us [included Jews that voted approximately 80% for him] made a huge, huge error in judgement in November of 2008, and the only question now is HAVE WE LEARNED OUR LESSON AND WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT GOING FORWARD TO 2012 AND BEYOND????????????

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.1.11 @ 10:35AM

Thanks for the posts, guys.
Y'all certainly filled in the blanks.

Bob K.| 1.1.11 @ 11:06AM

The hate crime was originally designed as a class warfare tool to be used to keep the white lower middle and lower classes (who are the biggest victims of affirmative action and who resent it most) under control. Like all attempts to control human nature it has it's flaws and it's unintended consequences. We are seeing how these errors caused by hubris play out now as populism takes precedence over democracy. It will get worse!

Mike W| 1.1.11 @ 11:16AM

Hate crimes are a liberal fabrication. When conservatives adopt this nonsensical terminology they reveal themselves to hypocrites and inconsistent. Vandalism, threats and violence against another are crimes before the bogus hate crime laws were adopted.

Jews trying to portray themselves as perpetual victims demeans the culture and puts them on the same level as the race baiting African American huckster that finds a racist behind every tree.

I applaud TAS for their comments section. It has little oversight and a lot of freedom. However, many of the posters are juvenile and irrational. Comparisons to Nazi Germany?? You people can't be serious. Obama is an anti-semite?? Are you kidding?

How can we criticize the left for their poor thought out policies when we spout out and apparently believe such silliness?

Bob K.| 1.1.11 @ 5:33PM

"Hate Crimes" are not a fabrication. They exist for the purpose of enabling the federal government to slip by the prohibition against Double Jeopardy. If the Feds don't like the result of a jury trial in a state court they can try it again under the "Hate Crime" statute in order to "get it right." It happens very often and it is selectively used almost all the time against white, lower middle class defendants. It is practically never used at all against defendants who are members of minorities. Most recently it was used here in PA to convict 2 teenagers, still in high school, in the town of Shenandoah. These 2 boys along with 2 others were involved in a drunken dispute with a Mexican Immigrant who was in the country illegally. The Mexican died as a result of his injuries. The Feds got 2 of the boys to turn states evidence (in return for an easy sentence) against the other 2 boys who chose to have a jury trial in State court. The County Jury found them not guilty of murder but did find them guilty of lesser charges. This was not satisfactory to the Justice Department who had them tried for a hate crime in Federal Court. They were found guilty in this proceeding and are now facing long federal sentences. They may both have reached their 18th birthday by now.

This is just one reason why minorities feel free to attack Jews. They know that they are immune to criminal charges under the "hate crimes" statute. It only applies to the majority white population!

And this law was set up by "The Ruling Class." Remember Professor Codevilla's article? How soon we forget!

And who were members of the "Ruling Class?" One has to include members of the white upper class and upper middle classes. Especially those in the Educational Establishment and high up in the State and Government Bureauocracies.

And now these people do not have the courage to defend the Jews in America from these crimes! Indeed, many of them are indeed Jews themselves! The ultimate irony of the Law of Unintended Consequences. It will get worse.

Oldefarte| 1.1.11 @ 11:52AM

Although I agree with your reasoning regarding the illumination of hate crime legislation, the application of same to Jews should be at the top of the list if the terminology is to be used. Please read my previous posting here regarding your erroneous statement [.....However, many of the posters are juvenile and irrational. Comparisons to Nazi Germany?? You people can't be serious. Obama is an anti-semite?? Are you kidding?...]. Of course he's inheritantly an anti-Semite, since his origin is/was in the Muslim religion [since most all of Muslims are anti-Semitic by the very nature and teachings of their hate-filled religion]. Muslims hate all non-believers of their Muslim faith, including and in addition to Jews. Get your ignorant head out of the sand and accept the non political correctness of reality!!!!!!!!!

Christopher| 1.1.11 @ 2:10PM

Are there are stats on who or what groups are causing the anti-jewish crimes?
The term "hate crime" is useful to identify the perpetrators of the crime to predict if any groups, racial or religious or otherwise, will commit these
crimes, In other words to PROFILE.

Mimi| 1.1.11 @ 3:34PM

We have a bigger problem than Hate against Jews by the Muslim Jihads....They are now murdering christian church goers and priests in cold blood. Pope Benedict has called for a meeting at Asissi in the spring to call religious leaders together....and good for him. Freedom to worship as one wishes is a crucial part of our heritage in this country. Our soldiers carry-on. The Muslim extremist are of a 7 century world. We have as our leader one who we do not TRUST. As we begin a New Year let us pray for change of HEARTS, PEACE and GOODWILL!!!

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.1.11 @ 4:25PM

Mimi,
Happy New Year!
You really need to get volume one of my new e-novel... ( www.texassaidno.com ) it is part of my saga "America Alone Said No" (to Sharia Law) kicking off World War IV.
You can find the foreword and chapter one at the link above.

PattyMor| 1.1.11 @ 5:21PM

The violence against the Jews is probably directly proportional to the number of Muslims we let into the country. What I can't figure out is why the liberal Jews in government support letting in these murderous thugs? Seems to be its like buying the rope for someone to hang you with.

ACynic| 1.1.11 @ 6:20PM

It is the liberal progressives and communists that oppose, implicitly (by their silence) or explicitly, the use of the very accurate terms, muslim extremists, muslim terrorists, etc. It is the progressive that considers these terms the language of racists and bigots. It is the progressive that has utilized Orwellian Double Speak to turn upside down the meaning of all the historic traditions of the USA. It is the progressive that has eliminated the use of plain common sense in dealing with our enemies; internal or external. Well, guess what. Almost all jewish folks vote liberal progressive. If you strike a deal with the devil, he will extract his due. He always does.

ehunt| 1.2.11 @ 3:29AM

Anti Semitism? Anti Semitism? That means there is
Semitism in the first place..right? I mean when you have 2% of the population owning 75% of the media, all of Hollywood, many of the banks, the Federal Reserve system ala Geithner, Greenspand, Bernancke, controlling what gets
said, controlling the education of the young, issuing "hate speech" laws to protect their monopolies, promoting mass immigration as "MultiCulturalism"..rewriting American history ala Chomsky and Zinn along a Communist agenda..then gosh a little Anti Semitism is
in order..dont you think?

Oldefarte| 1.2.11 @ 9:39PM

Jews are in positions of power, influence and authority simply because they are [in most cases and on purpose] intelligent and highly educated, something obviously you would not know much about!!!!!

We have a winner for stupid. First you apologize for antisemitism by blaming all Jews for Hollywood (when was they last time they like Israel or the Torah), and manufacturing facts. But then you through in communists of Jewish descent who hate Jews, Judaism, Jewishness and Israel more than they hate America. Ehunt, before you continue to reduce the knowledge of everyone reading your posts, go read Marx's On the Jewish Question. You might also want to look up what Frank Chodorov, Frank Meyer, Ralph de Toledeno, Michael Savage, Murray Rothbard,
Ludwig von Mises have in common. (Heck I think a third for the writers for Townhall.com are Jewish.

PS. In so far as the left is trying to use claims of Islamophobia to protect the Muslim Brotherood in the US, this is a political issue that even those with obvious issues with Jews should care about. Unless you are the type who hate Jews and/or Israel more than the love America.

PPS. Yes, I'm Jewish.

Chunt; An n ignoramous anti-semite ( Jew Hater ) if I ever read one. But here is the deal: The people s/he identifies as Jews ARE NOT JEWS HA HA HA.
They may have Jewish sounding surnames being born of a Jewish mother ( that would be Hitler's definition of a Jew BTW ) but they are NO JEWS.

And what the author didn't bother to note in the "hate crimes" data reported (which is a lack that ill befits this fact based magazine) was that such crimes against gay folks were up too, and we faced the biggest increase, and we make up some 20% of the hate crimes reported, but at the growth rate implied in the report, soon to be over 50% or more.

But hey, I guess that's OK, it's only gay folks, right? I mean, society says it's perfectly fine to hate us, correct? You know, "God Hates Fags" and such is perfectly fine free speech for many. Indeed, there are entire organizations with million dollar budgets with no purpose under the sun but to gin up hate (or it's cousins fear, loathing, despising, scorn, etc) of one sort or another against gay people -- often by just making up the most astounding lies. They are there to push for anti-gay legislation while they're at it. The FRC comes to mind -- after all, when it's senior police analyst, Peter Sprigg, calls for "exporting" gay folks, doesn't sound like agape love to me. And yes, he's on record -- easy to find the video and see it for yourself. "Export" -- that's what the FRC wants to do with gay folks. Which is, oddly, very 1930s indeed. Though it goes unmentioned here, of course.

But what does one conclude when one hears major candidates for office calling gay people "dysfunctional" and "God did create us like that" and worse -- these also very 1930s, in a demonize a tiny group kind of way.

But like I said, no biggie, for it's only gay folks, and if some are correct, we're the biggest threat to society, family, the nation and civilization ever concocted. Though odd that the only thing anyone is doing about it is to simple exhort us to stop being gay. Which ain't working, by the way. So weird, such a threat, and only words used, except when the words lead to the violence. Which is the hate crime personified by the application of the hate stirred up by so many against so few.

Happy New Year, and at least it's getting better. But if you're going to talk about hate crimes, don't forget to include one of the big targets, thanks.

Perhaps all Gays are Jews and vis versa--I don't --what do i know. But this article is about a certain kind of phenomenon the discounting of Anti-Jewish attacks ( call the Hate Crimes I call it plain old Antti_Semitism . I have no doubt thyere is a lot of attacks on Gays--of the criminal kind like assault for example or murder. But in my neck of the woods these are not only NOT UNDER REPORTED they are HEADLINED.
I am not at all complaining about that. What I do object to STRONGLY!!!!!!!!! IS THE MINIMIZATION of attacks on Jews.!!!!!!!!!!!!
This in my view is a very serious problem and speaks volumes about our government and media.

This is a change, of course, for our nation that will have bitter consequences. Consider, if you will, serving in close quarters in barracks, aboard ship, in combat zones and other situations peculiar to military service. Conflict, friction and hostility between heterosexual individuals and homosexuals – male and female – are inevitable.
Even though organized homosexual groups have been pressing their agenda forward, alleging that so-called “sexual orientation” is a “civil right,” there has been resistance and push back at all levels of society. Same-sex marriage and civil unions have been made legal in some states, but the majority of states have rejected or simply refused to consider such relationships as legal, with the rights, privileges and responsibilities that go with marriage. But the pressure is relentless, as those who practice and promote this perverted lifestyle pursue their goals though political means, economic pressure and popular entertainment which portrays the “gay” way of life as a normal, even preferable way to live.
These efforts on the part of homosexuals ignore the plain facts supported by mountains of evidence. It is not a healthy lifestyle. The threat of HIV and AIDS is very real and the number of cases continues to rise at an alarming rate, particularly among homosexuals. Is it any wonder that this is happening, since the horrific consequences of this activity are being ignored by the popular media and politicians? While there are some treatments for the symptoms, there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, and it is ultimately a fatal disease.
Beyond the physical consequences of this aberrant behavior, there is the emotional scarring, and spiritual devastation that results from ignoring the plain words of Scripture. This is not a new problem. Anciently, God plainly condemned this kind of behavior by His words and actions. If you don’t know the story, you should read about the fate of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, known for their profligate immorality, particularly homosexuality. The biblical account is found in Genesis 18:20; 19:24.
The Apostle Paul dealt with it in his day. He boldly condemned homosexuality in plain language. For example, he was inspired to write: “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due” (Romans 1:24-29).
While most people in our nation are worried about the economy and prestige of our country, there is a more basic, pressing question. Can a nation long stand that legalizes sodomy? Is it a civil right, as some assert, or is it clearly morally wrong, and repugnant in the eyes of our Creator? God sent two angelic beings down to walk the streets of Sodom and Gomorrah. When they had seen enough, God had those cities destroyed in dramatic fashion. When God has enough of the moral degradation of our modern society in the USA and other nations of the world, He will bring this current age to an end.

Mr. Cord,

You speak of the anarchy of the Greenies yet you are blaming our government for 9/11 and terrorist acts? Do you not see whose side you are taking?

Dale Cord| 1.3.11 @ 4:47PM

Margie, I take the side of Truth, Justice and the American way. Something I have not seen in the past Presidents and their sleazy administrations since the days when Lincoln was called (Honest Abe.) Perhaps you need to read my posts over again. My allegiance is to America, the flag, and our documents of Freedom. The Constitution,Declaration of Independence,Bill of Rights. Not to these forked tongued slippery serpents, wrapping themselves up neatly in our symbols, and pretending to be patriots, but in reality are guilty of High Treason against America. Which include all of the Republicans and Democrats ,and the 9 criminals sitting on the Supreme Court. Obama and all of his administration of "czars" (a name that has always been associated with the Middle East) They all need to be tried and incarcerated in our Federal prisons and Mental Institutions for their crimes against the American people. Their motto is, and always has been: "TRUTH IS TREASON IN THE EMPIRE OF LIES" Margie, Ignorance maybe bliss to some, but to be completely vacant in political knowledge and wisdom, can one day mean the difference between your imprisonment or freedom. Just ask the German people! Do you not see whose side you are taking?

Margie| 1.3.11 @ 7:42PM

I can see that reason and logic are not your strong suits.

Dale Cord| 1.3.11 @ 8:04PM

You have got be looking in the mirror when you say that!

OLDRAY| 1.3.11 @ 12:00PM

The increase in anti-Semitism in Western nations is clearly connected with the spreading influence of Islam and the blessings it has recieved by President Obama . "Anti-Zionism" is part and parcel of the Anti-USA, anti-Human Rights, anti-Christian attack. It is the leading edge. The Israel-Palestine concentration has nothing to do with this. If every Israeli and every Palestinian were to disapear today, the Shia and Sunni would still be at each other's throats ; churches would still be burned in Moslem countries, the Copts woulsd still be persecuted in Egypt, North Sudan (Islamic) would still be trying to destroy Christian and Anamist South Sudan, and Islam would still be trying to ram Shia law down the throats of Western Civilization. Islam (resurgent thru oil wealth) IS NOW at war with the civilized world. The Jews (and Israel) are the leading edge of the target. It is no accident that in the entire middle east the only country where Christians are more numerous than in the past decades is Israel. They are steadily being wiped out in Iraq, loosing power in Lebanon, erased in Saudi Arabia, etc.

Margie| 1.3.11 @ 12:16PM

You are right about the anti-semitism that is alive and well in the U.S.
Some of them call themselves conservatives.
They refer to Bible believing Christian conservatives who back Israel, "Israel-Firsters" and Neo-ons" and "Fake Christians."
They are rabid haters and many dwell here amongst the posters.
One in particular who posts under a few different (many) names.
Tim* and Clint.
He's keeping his cool these days under threat of banishment, but he is indeed one of these haters.

Mr. Nordstrom| 1.3.11 @ 1:43PM

Anti-semitism in the United States is a very serious problem - perhaps the most serious problem we face today. Jews simply cannot get a fair shake in our anti-Semitic country. Just look at these numbers:

Relative to the total U.S. population, Jews are more highly educated, have more prestigious jobs and earn higher household incomes. The educational success and socio-economic status of Jews constitute a significant source of strength for the community and its organizations, with positive implications for charitable resources, cultural sophistication and influence in the public sphere.

More than half of all Jewish adults (55%) have received a college degree, and a quarter (25%) have earned a graduate degree. The comparable figures for the total U.S. population are 29% and 6%. Jewish men are more likely than Jewish women to have college degrees (61% vs. 50%) and graduate degrees (29% vs. 21%).

Proportionally, slightly fewer adult Jews are currently employed (61%) than in the total U.S. population (65%), reflecting the older Jewish population. More than 60% of all employed Jews are in one of the three highest status job categories: professional/technical (41%), management and executive (13%), and business and finance (7%). In contrast, 46% of all Americans work in these three high status areas, including 29% in professional/technical jobs, 12% in management and executive positions, and 5% in business and finance.

The distribution of household income among Jews, especially at the high end of the income scale, reflects their relatively high education levels and high status jobs. More than one-third of Jewish households (34%) report income over $75,000, compared to 17% of all U.S. households. Proportionally fewer Jewish households (22%) than total U.S. households (28%) report household income under $25,000. The current median income of Jewish households is $54,000, 29% higher than the median U.S. household income of $42,000. In 1990, the median income of Jewish households was $39,000, 34% higher than the median income of $29,000 for all U.S. households.

http://www.jewishfederations.org/page.aspx?id=46193

As if that's not bad enough, when it comes to positions of REAL political and cultural power, it is particularly striking the extent to which Jews (who make up roughly 1.7% of the U.S. population) are shut out:

"…during the last three decades, Jews have made up 50% of the top two hundred intellectuals, … 20 percent of professors at the leading universities, … 26% of the reporters, editors, and executives of the major print and broadcast media, 59 percent of the directors, writers, and producers of the fifty top-grossing motion pictures from 1965 to 1982, and 58 percent of directors, writers, and producers in two or more primetime television series." *

Anti-Semitism: a very serious problem today in the U.S.A. Be afraid!

"Anti-Semitism: a very serious problem today in the U.S.A. Be afraid!"

Oh, no. Do not be afraid. Be aware. And nail it wherever you see it, no matter what the cost.

You may lose friends, and even family, but you won't lose God's love and blessings for speaking up.

Vasu Murti | 1.3.11 @ 3:52PM

Article VI, Section 3 of the Constitution states:

“No religious test shall be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

The following letter to the editor appeared in the February 1995 issue (vol. 5, no. 1) of Harmony: Voices for a Just Future, a peace and justice publication on the religious Left:

"...I am a former pro-choice activist and former animal rights activist. When I became prolife three years ago, I found myself being shunned by the animal rights movement because I was now prolife...I have found that whereas the Left has shut me out because I became prolife, the Right has welcomed me with open arms.

"I realize your organization is Leftist yet prolife/pro-animal rights, but I felt you should know...what I've personally experienced while trying to be consistently prolife. For me, it's not worth the fight. But for all of you, I wish you the best."

----Annette L. Ravinsky, Coordinator, Jews for Life & Traditional Morality, Philadelphia

Mrs. Ravinsky goes on to say elsewhere that her religion (Orthodox Judaism) supports capital punishment, and by opposing the death penalty, she is going against her religion.

We really live in a secular society, where people adhere to a number of differing beliefs and interpretations of various scriptures. And many rational, freethinking individuals are quite capable of distancing themselves from their unprovable religious beliefs (e.g., pro-choice Catholics, fundamentalists, born agains, etc.)

The animal rights movement is divided on abortion, as evidenced by an article in the Animals' Agenda in the late '90s. On the Democrats For Life e-mail list several years ago (2003 or 2004, perhaps?), Maria Krasinski (a Catholic lesbian who had issues with the church and became a Quaker) mentioned a poll which found animal activists evenly divided on abortion.

This is significant. It either means animal rights are a bipartisan cause, which conservatives can support as well as liberals, OR it means many liberals are uncomfortable with abortion.

I've never encountered any antagonism or hostility from animal activists for being vocal about the rights of the unborn, myself. However...

Mrs. Ravinsky says the Right has welcomed her "with open arms..."

Only because of the abortion issue!

I'd like to see her try and convince the Right to go vegan...and see how quickly they drop her, and spew their anti-semitic venom at her.

I know. I've faced their venom firsthand, as a non-Christian merely advocating compassion for animals, vegetarianism, and animal rights, which they regard as "dietary laws"...even when a secular case is made.

They point their fingers at their noses to indicate Judaism. Or they say angrily, "Jew up!" Or "always Jew." Or they slur their words. On a local morning radio show here in the San Francisco Bay Area several years ago, one of the on-air personalities was saying "Didja ever...?" with slurred speech, so it sounded like "Jew ever..."

On the other hand, when Ingrid Newkirk (Executive Director, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) appears on the morning show, she's greeted with warm words.

"Jew ever." That's a good one! Wasn't one of the first Nazi propaganda films entitled "The Eternal Jew"?

Pro-life Christians are more offended when told not to harm or kill animals than pro-choicers are when told not to harm or kill the unborn! They take it personally.

It's unfortunate, too, because (in the spirit of Gandhi or Tolstoy) they really should appreciate the similarities as well as the differences between the world's great religions.

As I've said elsewhere, for example:

I believe reincarnation IS compatible with Christianity, on an abstract theological level.

The NT describes one as a spirit, entangled in a body of flesh. The NT distinguishes between the carnal and the spiritual. “It is the Spirit that giveth the body life,” taught Jesus, “the flesh profit nothing.” (John 6:63) Paul taught Jesus had both an earthly and a spiritual nature (Rom. 1:3), and referred to his own spiritual self. (Rom. 1:9)

The spirit is a prisoner to sin and the flesh in a body doomed to death. (Rom. 7:18-24) Christians are to behave in a spiritually, rather than in a fleshly way. (Rom. 8:4; 13:14; I Peter 2:11) The desires of the Spirit and those of the flesh are opposed to one another. (Gal. 5:13,16-17) Christians have “crucified the flesh with its passions and desires;” they “live by the Spirit” and are “directed by the Spirit.” (Gal. 5:19-26)

To be carnally minded is to die. One must transcend one's lower, bodily nature. (Rom. 8:5-14) Saving the spirit of an individual differs from the destruction of the person’s flesh. (I Cor. 5:5)

God’s kingdom is not carnal, but spiritual: “...flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, neither does the perishable inherit the imperishable...For this perishable must put on imperishability and this mortal must put on immortality. (I Cor. 15:50,53)

The body is like a lump of clay. (Rom. 9:21; II Cor. 4:7) The body decays, but the self is renewed in spiritual life. (II Cor. 4:16-17) The body is a temporary tent in which the spirit resides; the spirits of the faithful will soon be clothed in everlasting, heavenly bodies. (II Cor. 5:1-3) The spirit resides inside a body of flesh. (II Cor. 10:3) To identify with the body is to be absent from the Lord. (II Cor. 5:8-10)

Paul wrote of being “caught up as far as the third heaven...whether in the body or out of the body I do not know...” (II Cor. 12:2-3)

Being with Christ differs from remaining “in the body;” one’s self is separate from the physical body. (Philippians 1:21-24) Christians are to set their sights on heavenly, not earthly things, and to put to death their earthly nature. (Col. 3:1-5)

The flesh decays, but the word of God is eternal. (I Peter 2:23-25) To love this world is to alienate oneself from God’s love, because the passions of this world are temporary. (I John 2:15-17) This world belongs to the devil (II Cor. 4:4); this present world is evil (Gal. 1:4).

God rewards each individual according to his deeds. (Rom. 2:6) One reaps what one sows. (II Cor. 9:6; Gal. 6:7) Some souls remain entangled in decaying flesh, while others turn to the Spirit. “The one who sows for his own flesh will harvest ruin from his flesh; while the one who sows for the Spirit will harvest eternal life from the Spirit.” (Gal. 6:8)

A kernel of spirit is placed in a body:

“...God gives it a body as He plans, and to each seed its particular body. All flesh is not the same; but one kind is human, another is animal, another is fowl, and another fish.” (I Cor. 15:38-39) The NT also distinguishes between earthly bodies and heavenly bodies. “There are heavenly bodies and also earthly bodies; but the radiance of the heavenly is one kind and that of the earthly is another kind.” (I Cor. 15:40)

Resurrection in the NT is not the reassembling of dust into living bodies, but rather, the clothing of the spirit with a new body; the placing of a kernel of spirit into a new body, from where its existence continues.

The NT emphasizes the distinction between the soul and the body, the clothing of the soul with a new body, and the eternal nature of the soul and its relationship to God versus the temporary nature of the flesh and the material world. These concepts can all be found in the doctrine of reincarnation.

There was an episode of the Partridge Family from the early '70s in which Danny Partridge is smitten with a Jewish girl in one of his classes. At the end of the episode, their families are dining together. The girl's father recites a prayer in Hebrew, and the Partridges note, "it's just like saying grace."

Again: instead of spewing anti-semitic venom, Christians really should appreciate the similarities as well as the differences between the world's great religions.

Dale Cord| 1.3.11 @ 5:24PM

The Bible is the inspired word of our Creator. How ever, He has given His opinion of the so called "great religions" : Their righteousness is as filthy rags.

Margie| 1.3.11 @ 5:43PM

There is no such thing as reincarnation.

As it is written:

"And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him." Heb. 9:27 & 28.

We die once, ONCE, and then comes judgment.
Stick to His words and don't make things up.. it helps your mind.

Oh and by the way, nice way you have of accusing Christians of being anti-semites.

You see, when you use the word CHRISTIAN, it means something. Real Christians cannot be anti-semitic. If they are, they go against God. Being Christian means follower of Christ.. and you can't have it both ways.

Eleanor| 1.7.11 @ 6:02AM

Will Jews ever get over their sense of victimhood? If Jews felt so persecuted in the USA or anywhere in the Diaspora, they'd pack up and move to Israel wouldn't they, but I see no indication of that happening.

Whenever Jews feel that support for Israel is waning or that there is danger of a non-existent pogram - out come the inflated statistics. What I am interested to know is why you have not mentioned that a lot of these so-called synagogue attacks were perpetrated by Jews themselves... It's that good old Hebrew saying bokhim ve-yorim" ("crying and "shooting")

rob loyd| 7.12.11 @ 8:31PM

Americans are waking up to the damage the Zionist Jews have done to our country and government. The heinous Propaganda assault worsens everyday. (Luckily, the propaganda becomes ever more ridiculous, which helps the awakening.) I don't believe, in the end, Americans will distinguish between Zionists and Jews. I'm afraid you will all suffer the same fate. Today is July 12, 2011. Jewish leaders have called Americans "do-gooders" etc., referring to our childish natures and idealistic outlook. However, it is my belief those same sarcastic Jews will be stunned at the ferocity of our anger and the depth of our need for blood revenge on those who set out to destroy what we hold dear and who has betrayed our kindness. In one year from today, look back on my comment. Perhaps it would be wise to move to Israel.

Steve| 8.23.11 @ 3:38AM

If John Doe commits pre-meditated murder against John Smith because Smith defaulted on a $100.00 loan from Doe, is it any less heinous a crime just because it wasn't, by definition, a hate crime? Could he be given more than the deserved death penalty if something like racial bigotry were involved? Obviously not!

Murder is murder, theft is theft, rape is rape, assault and battery, slander and libel are what they are. So-called hate crime is a false issue designed to protect wounded egos, self-image instead of life, liberty and property. Legitimate statutes are not designed to address what are purely social issues; those are problems that need to be handled in a social forum, not a legal one.

The danger in present hate crime legislation (not in the U.S.) is that it opens the way for outlawing expression which doesn't harm anyone's livelyhood, person, ownership. Once something like that is started, the parameters of outlawed expression can get broader and broader until unscrupulous power grabbers step in and take advantage of a paralyzed press, by taking total control of the media. Once that happens, we've lost our freedom.

I might not like someone calling me a narrow-minded, bigoted christian freak, but the person calling me that hasn't committed any real crime.

Steve| 8.23.11 @ 4:57AM

I checked a few articles, and apparently hate crime legislation is more active in the U.S. than I had realized.
