Sen. Tom Coburn this morning filed ammendments cutting spending
by $156 billion to offset the new spending in the tax deal
negotiated beteen President Obama and Republicans. Coburn was one
of just five Republicans to vote against the tax deal on Monday.
You can read the amendments
here.
Among the savings he proposes:
• A congressional pay freeze and a 15 percent reduction in
Congress’ budget;
• A freeze on how much can be spent on the salaries for federal
employees and a reduction in the number of government
bureaucrats;
• Limiting the amount that the government can spend on printing,
travel, and new vehicles;
• Selling unneeded and excess federal property;
• Stopping unemployment benefit payments to jobless
millionaires;
• Collecting unpaid taxes owed by federal employees and members
of Congress;
• Consolidating duplicative government programs;
• Preventing fraud within federal health care programs;
• Streamlining Defense spending and reducing foreign aid,
including voluntary contributions to the United Nations.
Good luck, Senator Coburn. You'll need it. Getting the
government to cut down on the crack is pretty hard, considering
they look out into the country and see it populated by 300 million
cash registers.
The debacle of this president’s administration is both a cause
and a symptom of the decline of American values. Unless Congress
impeaches him, that decline will go on unchecked. An eminent jurist
surveys the damage and assesses the chances for the recovery of our
culture.
The American Christmas, like the songs that celebrate it,
makes room for everybody under the rainbow. Is that why so
many people seem to be hostile to it?
