Republican Randy Altschuler has
conceded to Rep. Tim Bishop in the race to represent New York’s
1st Congressional district, which covers eastern Long Island. It
was the last Congressional race in the nation that had been
undecided, so we now know Republicans gained a total of 63 seats in
the 2010 midterm elections, giving them a 242 to 193 majority in
the House. Democrats would need to gain 25 seats in 2012 to regain
control.
Altschuler’s concession ends a contentious few weeks in the
Congressional race, with many ups and downs. On election day,
Bishop was declared the winner by over 3,400 votes. But then local
officials realized they had mis-tabulated the machines, and by the
end of the week gave Altschuler a 383-vote lead. However, that lead
disappeared as absentee ballots were counted, and by the time
Altschuler conceded this morning, he trailed by at least 263 votes
with under 1,000 absentee ballots left to be counted,
according to Newsday.

Philip,
My math must be rusty. You want to check those figures again?
OK this math might be obsolete, but before Noah's flood when I studied math...
242-193=49 cubits. (grin)

Ken, if the dems pick up 25 seats, they will have 193+25 = 218.
The repubs wouls lose 25 seats and have 242 - 25 =219.
And still have control.
But if the dems get 26, they would have 219; repubs 218.
So, by the #s above, a 26 seat gain is necessary for the dems

242-25=217. Therefore, if the Dems win 25 seats they will have a 218 to 217 majority.

Why is it that the Dems always seem to win these very close races? The Dem is now the winner for governor of Minnesota.

...because once their numbers end up on top they stop counting. They count (ala Franken) until it turns out the way they want. Recount Nev. Recount AZ-7. Recount the others until WE get the right result. How about it GOP, have you the stomach for the fight?
