Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of John Edwards, has died of cancer at the age of 61. Politically active in her own right, her husband was a one-term senator, two-time presidential candidate, and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

I'm sorry she's dead. My sympathies to her family. Personally, I'm certain she was wonderful and kind to rabbits.

However, her political influence was horribly destructive---she would have foisted an amoral scumbag, John Edwards, on us all as President. It's good her plans failed, as she was a destructive baboon politically.

There is never any need for us to speak ill of the dead, even if we disagreed politically with the deceased. We'll leave that to the left, which delights in the deaths of people with whom they disagree. Let them wallow in hate. We ought to show a bit more respect.

Mrs. Edwards certainly drove her husband on, but she was also a victim of her husband's appetites -unlike Hillary, who was fully aware of her husband's activities and took steps to cover it up to advance his and her careers. Mrs. Edwards seemingly had no clue that her husband was a philandering twit.

She went through more than one bout of cancer and seemed to deal with it as well as anyone could. Now she's gone and cannot defend herself. So let's be consistent and be kind to those who have passed and contrast ourselves with those who cheer (literally) when their political opponents die.

Well said, Tony!

You are correct, Tony, in a less primitive world. Alas, such is not the world we live in. Ms. Edwards became rich because her husband was a malpractice attorney. I really did hate her, personally. I have been sued, and always won. These inappropriate lawsuits have left me with irritable bowel and hypertension. In short, it wasn't just about politics; in fact, that was a minor point. I despise malpractice plaintiff attorneys, and those who profit from them. She was such a person. Fahhh!

That being said, you are a better man than I.

Sorry - I have never understood the fear of speaking ill of the dead. We're all born with a death sentence - the saints and the sinners - the honorable & the morally corrupt. And cancer does not make a hero/heroine out of anyone. It certainly doesn't make a person grow an ethical backbone.

Those close to Elizabeth - family & friends - would hardly be reading this blog, so I will just tell it like it is - EE was known for her temper, her rudeness to flunkies, and her single focus when it came to getting the Breck Girl elected. She knew of John Boy's infidelity, and still pushed him to run for President, knowing the scandal that could have unfolded while he was in the Oval Office.

Why anyone was fooled by him is beyond me. He seemed like a typical narcissist fake to me - talking a lot about "poverty" while building a 28K sq ft mansion, and creating fake "poverty" non-profits at UNC-Chapel Hill, bastion of hypocritical liberal elitists, while billing them for his travel etc. expenses. Oh, and paid Rielle off too - twice - with PAC $$$ and with non-profit funds.

What will happen to the Federal investigation against him now? I can hope the U.S. Attorney has little sympathy for him & issues some indictments soon. This case has been dragging out far too long.

Hear, hear! Elizabeth Edwards does not suddenly become a martyred saint because she died of cancer, she simply becomes another casualty of the disease (that has eaten up billions of dollars in research cash with no cure in sight, btw). As much as the people who loved her will mourn her loss, she was just as bad as Hillary Clinton because she knew what CornPone was doing and was willing to tolerate it if only he could become President. Hell, she may have actually been worse than Hildabeast because she actually used her recurrence of cancer as a political tool to paint CornPone as someone willing to make this grand personal sacrifice because of his need to serve the nation from its highest office. I don't think Bill and Hill would have ever gone that low to win an election!

Elizabeth Edwards was a swine for several reasons:

1) she made her fortune through illegitimate lawsuits;
2) she tried to foist a despicable human being as President on us to aggrandize herself. (This is because, as the wife of malpractice plaintiff attorney, she had lost her sense of SMELL. 90% of malpractice lawsuits are won by the defendants.)

Loser. Good riddance.

I don't mind suing people or companies who cause actual harm. But as it is now, many doctors don't get sued for actual negligence, they get sued because the illnesses, treatments and operations are complicated and when something goes wrong, lawyers offer simple answers: "Oh, if the doctor had simply done X , Y would have never occurred." It's a numbers game. Sue enough doctors and you'll hit the big one, like Edwards did. Scumbag.

That said, I have sympathy for the Edwards' children. They obviously will hurt and I feel terrible for them. They will miss their mother everyday of their lives. As for her and her husband, they were political whores and pompous asses and deserve nothing but scorn. It's great that, by comparison, John looks like the lowest scum on Earth. I will always remember her for the cover up - knowing her hubby was a cheating scumbag and shutting up about it - they just thought we needed them so. Vainglory.

WFB, Jr. practiced it as did his magazine when he ran it. Although there were exceptions for mass murderers etc. Political opponents were gently treated. But, the printed page can stay around a while. These musings on the internet disappear like the "flies on a summer's day,"
