The Global Warming Policy Foundation passes along a revealing interview by a German outlet, Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Their own summary of the interview, translated by GWPF (its director Dr. Benny Peiser is a native German), reads:

Climate policy has almost nothing to do anymore with environmental protection, says the German economist and IPCC official Ottmar Edenhofer. The next world climate summit in Cancun is actually an economy summit during which the distribution of the world's resources will be negotiated.

Possibly Herr Edenhofer will protest that this characterization of his remarks is unfair. That's up to you, the entirety (it seems) is provided by GWPF and in the original German here.

At least then-French President Jacques Chirac waited until the opening plenary session of the Kyoto talks in the Hague (COP-6) at about this time in 2000 to boast that Kyoto is "the first component of an authentic global governance." I was in the room and, looking around, could immediately identify all other Americans present, by their jaw-on-floor look. I also specifically recall the Guardian scribe pacing back and forth behind the scrum yelping "Bollocks!" at Cong. James Sensenbrenner for daring to express concern about Chirac's assertion, at a spontaneous press availability in the hallway afterward.

This fellow couldn't wait until Cancun. I wonder if the folks at Scientific American who just published a paper fretting that anyone (specifically, actually, any skeptic) would say such things will have a rethink. Add this to various statements I noted here to remind our social scientist friends that this actually is the sort of thing the climate campaigners admit to, in one form and to one degree or another, with some regularity.

Just have to tell the UN, Third-World Fly Slappers, Eco-Freaks, etc., Don't touch our junk.

Everyone who is pushing the green idea, from politicians (or ex-politicians whose movie was inconveniently considered to contain a lot of falsehoods) to companies like GE or Goldman Sachs to countries stand to make incredible amounts of money. And all of the money will come from us poor slobs who will have to pay 4 or more times more for heating/cooling and will be paying $4 or $5 per gallon of gas (if we can actually buy any). The Republicans and realistic Democrats in Congress need to do what they can to stop the madness!!!!

As a Redneck, I love the earth as my kin worked the field, lived off the land and the like. And we need to be careful how we take care of the earth. But this Green stuff is no longer about being good to the earth, it is about big business, money, and fame. And the funny thing is the ones who tout this the most, like Gore and Schwarzenegger, have the biggest homes and ride ar0und in personal jets and big motorcades. And the sad thing is all of this 'crying wolf' takes away from real potential environmental issues.
