No Truce for You

If the reactions to my Mitch Daniels cover story are any indication, the social issues truce comment is going to turn out to be a real problem for him if he runs for president. To put it mildly.

...That's becasuse social issues are the foundation of financial issues. If you secure the family and promote life, you have a growing, thriving economy for the long-term. Nations that have high incidences of birth control (Japan, Germany, Italy, etc.) all have long-term structural financial issues tied to bith control and low birth rates. Persistant poverty in minority communities? Look at the incidence of fatherless homes, unwed mothers - leads directly to no income, and high dependence on the welfare state.

Social issues are not divorced from fiscal issues. We need leaders who understand the profound connection between a moral life, self-governance, and fiscal soundness which in turn are foundational to an operational, constitutional republic.

Mitch D's lack of clarity in this regard makes him no different from any other Republican Progressive. Let's get to the same place as Dem progressive just not as fast....

Very well said, and very Reaganesque as well.

Reagan said in his farewell address. “I wasn’t a great communicator, but I communicated great things, and they didn’t spring full bloom from my brow, they came from the heart of a great nation-from our experience, our wisdom, and our belief in the principles that have guided us for two centuries. They called it the Reagan revolution. Well, I’ll accept that, but for me it always seemed more like the great rediscovery, a rediscover of our values and our common sense.“

I'm hoping that our recent wins are a reflection of wanting to once again return to those values and our common sense.

He understood that for us to be great, we need both:

"Together let us take up the challenge to re-awaken America's religious and moral heart, recognizing that a deep and abiding faith in God is the rock upon which this great nation was founded."
Ronald Reagan

The same group of individuals who campaign as fiscally conservative/socially liberal are the ones who invariably sell us out in the end. Think Arlen Specter or Christine Whitman as just two examples. A commitment to pro-life/pro-family/pro-values causes is more controversial, and thus requires a higher level of commitment from a candidate. A candidate who has taken lumps for that commitment and stood by it is far less likely to sell us out on other issues, including fiscal matters.

Just a thought, for whatever it's worth.

Cordially,

You got it Mr. Antle & Mitch Daniels will not be elected POTUS in 2012. NVA Patriot, you hit the nail on the head.

And the social issues "truce" comment is only one of his problems. He has also angered the fiscal conservatives with his support of the VAT. He angered the defence conservatives with his comment that he would cut the Defense budget even farther than Obama. Gates is looking to cut $100 billion from the defense budget over the next five years.

Mitch is very boring, and would put people to sleep in any speech he gave. He also doesn't seem to have any control over what he says, if he is seriously looking at 2012. He seems to suffer from O'Biden disease.
