The Pariah Chess Club

There are some really interesting nuggets in this New York Times piece on Charles Krauthammer’s love for chess, including (but not limited to!) an explanation of this post’s title.

Shawn,

You can't trick me into spending life-span reading the NYTimes that easily, heh heh, heh.

I've always appreciated the intellectual acuity of good chess players but never was interested in the game itself, precisely because it doesn't reflect the realities of war (diplomacy, perhaps, but not war). It doesn't take into account logistics, supply, terrain, morale, dumb luck and the wastage of actual combat.

I prefer miniature wargaming myself. I know a guy who re-fought Overlord three times with multiple what-if historical scenarios with some unusual results (Rommel recives permission to release the panzers, the Marines are included in the invasion, etc.). And the board--a freaking work of art and sweat and love--was more breathtaking than a chessboard, too!

Yes, I left chess for miniature gaming myself. Kriegspel in its contemporary form is at its best a feast for the eyes and a challenge for the mind. May you always make your saving throw!
