There are differences in how generally-similar-thinking people look at Israel. I've never understood though the intensity with which some are convinced 'Israel is The problem'. It sounds like the anti-American sentiments that try to blame us for whatever goes wrong in the world.

I think Israel is a "problem" because the middle east is no longer of any importance to us - I know they have oil but I don't think we plan to simply steal it. And so long as they don't hate us they'll sell it to us. Even if they do hate us they'll sell it to us. So the middle east is of no importance to us and yet somehow we're responsible for the oxymoronic "Middle East Peace Process" that has been going on since I was a child in the 50s. We're supposed to give Israel 5 or 6 billion dollars every year just for existing, and now we're supposed to fight wars against all the states that supposedly threaten them and get thousands of our young men killed. You can be damn sure that if I had a son I wouldn't let him get killed over there. But with the volunteer army we just let the uneducated suckers do all the dying. If they get testy we pump them up with patriotic rhetoric then reach for the remote. It disgusts me. I believed in the Cold War and I detest Communism (unlike the founders of the state of Israel, who were mostly communists, I am told by a reliable Jewish scholar.) So I just don't see why there's this orchestrated frenzy that has us talking about Israel and the Holocaust 24 /7 year after year. Will it never end? And it's hurting our society too, because the campaign against Islam is building sentiment against ALL religion the idea being that all fundamentalists are equally crazy and dangerous. So yes, Israel is a problem. But it wouldn't be a problem if we would just get the hell out of the middle east and attend to our problems here. The Arabs didn't hate us prior to the creation of Israel, but now they hate us, so we have to devote the next 30 years to exterminating them. Sheesh, what a nightmare. And not a single politician in either party can side with the Palestinians, despite a considerable Arab/Muslim population in the US. And if you think we should shake off these commitments and turn our thoughts to something else you're called horrible names. Do you get the feeling we're being manipulated at all?

When I was growing up most of the Jews I knew were left-wing atheists who often defended the Soviet Union. For that reason I think it's weird that certain Christian churches seem fanatically devoted to them. Don't expect them to return the compliment. I don't think they are interested in what you see as God's plans for them. Although it's bad manners to speak ill of the dead, it isn't bad form to point out a rather obvious truth: Joseph Sobran was a rabid anti-semite who associated with Holocaust deniers, giving that sorry, malevolent crowd (in their eyes anyway) a measure of the mainstream credibility they so badly seek and crave. In her tribute, Ann Coulter chooses to overlook this aspect of Sobran's life and views. Coulter knew Sobran personally, considered him a mentor and friend. Okay, he was her friend and saying nice things about him when he dies is certainly her preogative. That does not mean, however, Sobran should be rehabilitated now that he's in the ground. He and other (slightly more subdued) anti-semites who claim the 'conservative' label such as Patrick 'Hitler was a great man' Buchanan do inestimable damage. As for England's role in instigating WWII. Buchanan is probably right. I haven't seen evidence of Germany going after anything other than historically German land until the British and French got involved. The biggest monster around at that time was Stalin, but somehow there is little outrage against him also invading Poland. The war probably would have been contained to the east with Germany and USSR eventually going after each other.

Although Joe Sobran's attending a David Irving conference was ill-advised, I don't see him as a hater at all. The ultimate haters are all those who support legalized abortion- most of the Democratic Party and many neoconservatives like Charles Krauthammer, David Frum(an unborn baby is just a "blob of cells"), David Brooks and Jonah Goldberg. Joe Sobran fought the fight for life, including the lives of unborn children of all races, ethnicities and religions.

As for the "Hitler was a great man" comment attributed to Pat Buchanan, that was completely taken out of context of a column written more than 25 years ago. Buchanan was not proclaiming support for Hitler's behavior but that Hitler was one of the most important men of a century drenched with blood. For anyone to imply otherwise is either dishonest or ignorant. Take your choice.

If you step back and think about it, he may have had a point. Sooner or later we will have to pull back from our endless and ruinously expensive military adventures in the Middle East. When we do, and look at back what we have done, it will be very possible to laud the brave men and women who carried out our foreign policy, and execrate the politicians of both parties who overreached. To the extent that Israel influenced our foreign policy toward unwarranted militarism (a hobby-horse of Sobran's), they deserve a measure of the blame as well. Seriously: how can our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan possibly be aligned with "conservative" ideology? On the contrary, they are more aligned in practice with Statism.

Your question about Israel is the heart of the matter. I'm not sure about the answer either. It does seem to me that the 2 state "solution" is detrimental to Israel's security and I do not believe it would happen if it wasn't for our pressure to do so. I also think that in '67 the Israelis would have (and should have) outright annexed the West Bank if not for concern for how we would react. So, to me these are 2 examples where they bent to our will in spite of their own security needs. I don't think we can afford the dollars and neither can they afford the lives that our interference costs.

I completely agree about war and even go one farther. I don't agree with "preemptive" war either, because it too often is a cover for aggressive war. Sometimes aggressors can win but they can never be right.

As to roads and sanitation, in my area the sanitation is completely private, as the government flat made a mess of the job. Now there are 4 or 5 major companies and several small independent operators to pick from. The price has steadily gone down for 10 years and the service has improved to the point that some even come to your back door to pick up.(When government did it you had to take your garbage to one of 3 collection points, as much as 23 miles away)
And roads are built by private contractors from start to finish because that's where the real expertise is. Why wouldn't the same companies be able to maintain the roads they build? And we have "private" roads, toll roads. Of course these are owned by government and in many cases they are no better, and sometimes worse, than the non toll roads, in spite of paying a fee for this purpose. I have no doubt that land owners would obtain better prices for right of ways than they do now with the threat of eminent domain behind government offers.

But even if some claim that these are "legitimate" responsibilities for government, does that mean that the fraud, waste, corruption, and cronyism has to be accepted? You sure get plenty of these with everything they do now. I don't believe it is possible to make road building(among many other things government does) any more corrupt even if the Mafia did the job.

It, to me, talks of certain types of people that seek advantage through a manipulation of political means that are Jews. But that is a valid charge against more than just Jews, urban manipulation by blacks or corporate manipulation by(mostly) whites. Not to mention the manipulation of all of us by politicians of every stripe.
