Ten weeks ago, after three days of shadowing Christine O'Donnell's campaign team at the Right Online conference in Las Vegas, I wrote this:
That political candidates are judged nowadays in large part on how they look on TV is lamentable. Insofar as that factor influences the Delaware Senate race, however, it works to the Republican's advantage.
Much online debate was engendered Monday night by the debut of O'Donnell's first TV ad of the general-election campaign, which begins with the memorable line: "I'm not a witch."
The problem is that the people debating the effectiveness of the ad are political junkies, and typical independent voters -- "Ordinary Americans," as I've sometimes called them -- don't look at politics the way we junkies do.
The ineffable quality known as "likeability" (which helped George W. Bush against snobs like Al Gore and John Kerry) matters a lot with independent voters. That's the basis of my initial reaction to the O'Donnell ad: "With a smile like that, she's awfully hard to hate. The Castle campaign tried to demonize her and it backfired."
Dave Weigel notes that liberals seem obsessed with O'Donnell "because at the end of the day they expect to beat her."
And what if their expectations are disappointed?

The more hate the Left throws at this gal, the more she will move ahead in the polls. She is a cross between the sister I would have loved and the daughter I would want. Bag on her all you want, you'll just stir up jaw gritting loyalty.

The Democrats are "obsessed" with guilt-by-association smear tactics. They desperately seek to make one person the "face" of the Republican party, then smear them, hoping that will take down the entire Republican Party in one set of attack ads.
So far they've said "Rush Limbaugh is the leader of the Republican Party", tried to make Boehner the face of the Republican Party, and now are doing the same with O'Donnell.

If you want to read some guilty-by-association smears, I suggest reading 'The Coons 12'.

I don't like G-B-A from either party. It really doesn't matter to me if a candidate's uncle's neighbor's butcher is a communist. The candidate's opinion matters, and no one else's.
SoCon| 10.5.10 @ 2:44PM
It only matters to me if the candidate, himself, is a communist! The self-described "bearded Marxist" is enough for me.

"Dave Weigel notes that liberals seem obsessed with O'Donnell 'because at the end of the day they expect to beat her.' "
That doesn't make sense. I would tend to think the fear of the opposite outcome fuels their creepy obsession.
In addition, Leftists have a REAL misogyny problem with CONSERVATIVE women, who are invariably very attractive.
SoCon| 10.5.10 @ 2:47PM
It didn't make sense to me, either. Leftists are obsessed with O'Donnell (and Palin) because they fear her. I think it bugs them because they are both lovely, normal looking women, too.

Coons Is A Serial Liar & A Serial Taxer .
Jeffrey Lord , "........ after promising in his 2004 election campaign that he wouldn't raise taxes Coons raised property taxes by 5% in 2006, then again by 17.5% in 2007, and again by 25% in 2009. Coons has proposed to raise hotel taxes, paramedic taxes, and, in a hilariously stereotypical move reported by the Washington Examiner's Byron York -- even taxes on 911 calls!"

Christine O'Donnell's ad was weak, relying on empathy from voters, I suppose. Better to blast her opponent Chris Coons, County Executive of Delaware's largest county, who is the biggest tax increaser in Delaware history and an admitted Marxist in college. A college Marxist trumps a schoolgirl witch any day.
Loadmaster| 10.5.10 @ 9:31AM
Derek - you have totally missed Jeffrey point. Empathy is very big this election cycle. The good folks in Delaware understand that. This notion that college Marxist will trump the order of the day is misguided. Look for the soccer moms and Nascar fans to show up and cover the backside of "the lady will a million dollar smile". Don't doubt me on this.
Siegfried X| 10.5.10 @ 11:23AM
Candidates need to do both: define themselves and define the other candidate. Either the candidate does it, or her opponent will.
Seek| 10.5.10 @ 2:33PM
David Horowitz was once a "bearded Marxist." Now he's a bearded anti-Marxist. By the same token, Chris Coons' affiliation in college is next to irrelevant. What does he believe now?
As for Christine O'Donnell, I fear she is a classic dumb broad, only brunette instead of blonde.
SoCon| 10.5.10 @ 2:49PM
Coons is a big tax and spend liberal--that's more than enough to reject him this November.

I think that many liberals experience some sort of weird, inexplicable inverse reaction to some people on the right. They look at Sarah Palin, who is really pretty moderate (and REALLY PRETTY) on many issues and see some sort of slavering fascist. They look at a moderate like George W. Bush, who reminds me of about 500 successful, likeable preppies I know, and see both a drooling idiot and an evil genius.
Now it is Christine O'Donnell's turn. She seems like a nice person, and she indeed possesses a million dollar smile. That must mean, in the liberal mind, that she is a monster to be destroyed.
What must it be like to be trapped in such a mindset?
DRed| 10.5.10 @ 10:51AM
Why don't you ask your comrades who look at President Obama, who is really pretty moderate, and see some sort of slavering communist.
Andrew B| 10.5.10 @ 11:31AM
Agreed, Obama is no communist. He is, however, a socialist, which is close enough for discomfort.
That being said, do you mean to put forward that mainstream conservative outlets routinely portray President Obama with the raw, unreasonable hatred that greeted President Bush (and now greets Sarah Palin)? Do late night comics call for his assassination (see Craig Ferguson)? Do "comedians" recommend that he be gang-raped (see Sandra Bernhardt)?
Sure, many on the right hate President Obama's policies (I am one) and some hate him personally (I am not one). Does this compare with the endless orgy of hatred on the left for anyone on the opposite side? Was George W. Bush truly a fascistic dictator? If so, why isn't he still in office, instead of living in near-silent retirement? Is every conservative woman truly a stupid bimbo? Does that mean that all females in politics are brainless, or only the ones with R after their names? Is everyone who disagrees with President Obama truly a racist? Then what about people who disagree with Clarence Thomas? Are they also motivated strictly by racial hatred?
I couldn't live in a world that I thought truly was like that.

Inexplicable? She lied about having graduated from college. Then she lied and said it was only because she hadn't paid the bill (while at the same time her campaign staff said she actually completed a final required course this summer). She filed a frivolous lawsuit against her employer stating that her dismissal kept her from returning to a graduate program at Princeton that she was never accepted into, and couldn't have been accepted into without having an undergraduate degree. She said she has classified information about a Chinese plot to take over the United States. She implied that she had never defaulted on her home loan (she did, and it was about to be foreclosed on when she sold it to a friend or boyfriend or whatnot.) She used campaign contributions for personal expenses. She says that evolution is a myth. She said she won two or three counties in Delaware in the last election even though -- surprise -- she didn't.
I'd say the adverse reaction is pretty explicable.

Derek Leaberry| 10.5.10 @ 11:31AM
Can anyone tell me why Delaware politics has swung to the left since about 1992? Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan each won it twice and the elder Bush won it in 1988 fairly easily.

A few things: The decline in stature of the (Republican) DuPont family; an increase in the black and Hispanic populations; out-of-state growth, especially along the beaches; and the rise of Joe Biden as a senior native son. Anything else is a guess.

Videos of Christine's campaign speeches and TV appearances are being collected at:

I see that Weigel calls O'Donnell, "the Marianne of the Tea Party-GOP takeover." Too awkward-sounding. Given the candidate's photogenic qualities, let's go with "the Mary Ann of the GOP's Tea Party makeover."

I'd have to disagree. This is the kind of ad that would make an average voter stop and wonder what this woman is talking about. It's a terrible ad that does a disservice to her campaign. I've written a long piece here explaining my perspective here: http://politics.usnews.com/opi.....ot-like-us

I live in Texas and I like Christine O'donnel. I have a suggestion to go in his campain.
President Obama and most democrats keep complaining that they "INHERIT" all the problems from the previous administrations. All of them campain and promise to fix any and all problems and make America better. ALL knew the problems they campain and promise to fix. THEY HAVE NOT. THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF FIXING ANYTHING AND HAVE MADE THINGS WORST IN USA. They did not inherit anything. They have demonstrated their incapacity to get anything done, other than going in reverse. THEY WILL NEVER AGREE THAT THEY DID NOT INHERIT ANYTHING. THEY CAMPAIN TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO CAUSE THEM. THEY WILL NEVER ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR INCOMPETENCE.
