The Spectacle Blog

Here’s what 1010.org has to say about pulling down their disgusting video:

Sorry.

Today we put up a mini-movie about 10:10 and climate change called ‘No Pressure’.

With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh. We were therefore delighted when Britain’s leading comedy writer, Richard Curtis - writer of Blackadder, Four Weddings, Notting Hill and many others – agreed to write a short film for the 10:10 campaign. Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended.

As a result of these concerns we’ve taken it off our website. We won’t be making any attempt to censor or remove other versions currently in circulation on the internet.

We’d like to thank the 50+ film professionals and 40+ actors and extras and who gave their time and equipment to the film for free. We greatly value your contributions and the tremendous enthusiasm and professionalism you brought to the project.

At 10:10 we’re all about trying new and creative ways of getting people to take action on climate change. Unfortunately in this instance we missed the mark. Oh well, we live and learn.

Onwards and upwards,

Eugenie, Franny, Lizzie and the whole 10:10 team

And here’s what they told Climate Depot’s Marc Morano in an email:

Hi there,
The film was intended for a British audience,  and has had a variety of responses, mostly positive, but not from a global  perspective. I appreciate your email and am forwarding it to UK  headquarters. Please know that there was a technical glitch and the film wasn’t intended to be on the global sites, only the British site. It has been removed from all sites and here is the statement (see above) for me to send to you from the UK. Thank you again for your email.  JXX

The British people are even more screwed up than we are.

Eric Cartman| 10.1.10 @ 3:11PM

The Brits love their government (all Eurotrash do). Talk to one sometime. I was in Heathrow on my way to home a decade or so ago. I was talking to a gentleman about Clinton and the health care debate back then. He could not - simply could not - grasp the idea that we didn't want the government health care for all. I tried to explain it, but he was guffawing like "Oh you Yanks! You're too dumb for your own good!" Just like the Democrats do today. Finally I said something like "It's really simple. We're adults and don't need Mommy anymore. We don't view our government as a big teet to suck on. We work for what we have. Simple." (Well, the Democrats don't and see everything as a big teet opportunity. But I digress.) He politely stood up and moved away. Hee hee. Guess he didn't like being compared to a toddler.

It was funny because he had funky teeth and bad breath telling me how good the British system is. They really love their government over there.

SoCon| 10.1.10 @ 4:43PM

You're funny, Eric. You crack me up!

Unfortunately, you're such a descriptive storyteller, I could almost see that Brit's 'funky' teeth and (yuck!) smell his bad breath.

We fought a bloody revolution over 200 years ago to escape those ninny nanny nincompoops; why would we want to go back now?

Eric Cartman| 10.2.10 @ 12:59AM

Thank you SoCon. Glad I could make you smile. Its sad, but the stereotype Brit with bad teeth isn't a stereotype LOL. They get two dental appointments a year (I was told) and their teeth look like they came out of a jarof Orville Redenbacher popcorn - only uglier and with more brown spots. And his breath was like he just gargled with Yak Hoof Cheese - which probably isn't real, thank God. But you never know - could be some Pashtun delicacy aged in the armpits of tribal day laborers. Anyway, looks like Alan likes that sort of stuff.

SoCon| 10.2.10 @ 3:02AM

I've read the Brits are very sensitive about their unattractive teeth, so you'd think they would bust out the floss and teeth whiteners once in a blue moon--but NOOOOO! Why don't the kids get braces over there? I don't get it.

I know I'm promulgating a stereotype but there's a lot of truth there, too. Of course, they call us a bunch of fatty fat fatsos, so I guess it's fair to critique their 'funky' teeth. lol

Eric Cartman| 10.2.10 @ 10:58AM

You would think they would be embarrassed given their chompers, wouldn't ya? It could be that he was jealous of my pearly whites :-D lol. Guy left quite and impression - still remember his cigarettes; Lucky Strikes . Weird what ya remember. Europe is just a weird place - glad my ancestors got the hell out.

Here's a funny little poem I read a long time ago while over there. Glad someone put it up on the web: http://www.tealdragon.net/humor/poetry/chunnel.htm

"We're adults and don't need Mommy anymore."

You are being disingenuous, when you write "grasp the idea that we didn't want the government health care for all", you mean you want govt to subsidize the healthcare only of some of your kin and friends. But too many know about the Tea Party's "We Hate Statism That Does not Benefit OUR People", so it wont cut the mustard anymore.

O'Dpnnell is a nut| 10.1.10 @ 11:16PM

Perhaps you can point out examples of the Tea Party's "we hate statism that does not benefit OUR people" rhetoric. I am fairly certain all you can point to is a few random comments from people that were at Tea Party rallies. And what would a post bashing the Tea Parties be without someone implying racism? Yes, you nailed it Alan. Tea Partiers want federal spending cut up until the point it affects white people. I am no fan of the Tea Parties, but the attacks on Tea Partiers have become so cliched and pathetic that they are no longer worthy of being taken serious. Honestly, if you can't see the difference between protesting an increase in federal spending on new entitlement programs we can't afford and maintaining current programs for people who have paid taxes for them for decades, you are an idiot who should just go back to the Daily Kos echo chamber.

O'Donnell is a nut| 10.1.10 @ 11:26PM

And I particularly like the part where you just attribute ideas to a guy to whom you are responding even though nothing he wrote bolsters your "interpretation". I think it is quite obvious that when the first commenter wrote "we didn't want government health care for all" that he is stating his opposition to government subsidized health care programs such as Obamacare. Nowhere, NOWHERE, is there even the slightest implication that he wants healthcare subsidized for his "kin and friends." As a matter of fact, the tirade against entitlement spending in general would seem to support an opposite interpretation. But hey, don't let the obvious import of his words stop you from throwing around lame accusations or racism. Moreover, I don't see a single use of the phrase "Tea Party" in his post, thus your labelling of him as a Tea Partier and your pathetic guilt-by-association attacks are unsubtantiated as well. Heck, is there anything you didn't just make up out of thin air? Do you simply ignore what a commenter actually writes and substitute your cliched, stereotypical views of what you think conservatives believe and then proceed to attack those views?

By the way, the fact that the first commenter made his comments about goverment health care during the Clinton Administration kind of renders your Tea Party references historically inaccurate, don't you think, idiot?

Willey| 10.1.10 @ 11:34PM

Wow! Good job. You slapped the goofy grin right off that libtard's face.

Alan, you're an idiot.

Eric Cartman| 10.2.10 @ 12:44AM

Well, you could be right, Alan. OR, it could mean since I wasn't even born when Medicare and Medicaid were enacted - and therefore didn't have a say in it - I was making an exception for my elders who were on it: i.e. my grandparents were probably on Medicare (that and the VA). I can't be held responsible for what happened before I arrived on this planet. Either way, I never received gubmint health care except for injuries and illnesses while in the military . . . but I was ordered to go see the nice flight surgeon. They have a way of doing that. Otherwise, yeah, I hate statism. Unlike you, I guess. Just because you enjoy your statism, don't project your feeling on others and assume they do. Because as the nice Drill Instructor said, When you assume, you make and ass out of you, but piss ME OFF!

Cylar| 10.3.10 @ 2:20AM

It's "cut the MUSTER," idiot...not "mustard." Why can't people use this phrase correctly? In fact, you probably meant to say "pass muster." Dumb ass.

Royale| 10.3.10 @ 6:53AM

Alan doesn't care about cutting the mustard because he cuts the cheese.

fishnwhistle| 10.4.10 @ 10:54PM

No, it is actually "cut the mustard". If you have seen mustard greens growing in a garden, they lie flat, and are difficult to bend over to cut, especially if you are old. i.e. the old country song "He's getting too old to cut the mustard anymore". Now who is the Dumass?
Song Name: Too Old to Cut the Mustard
Artist Name: Red Foley
Album: Hillbilly Fever: 24 Greatest Hits
Songwriter(s): Bill Carlisle
Release Date: June 6, 2005
Label: Baricum

Alan Brooks| 10.1.10 @ 9:37PM

... at any rate, IMO schools in the UK are better than our schools.

Willey| 10.1.10 @ 11:31PM

Yeah, their liberals haven't screwed up their schools as much as our stupid liberals have.

Thanks for all you do, Alan.

Eric Cartman| 10.2.10 @ 1:05AM

Did you mean their private schools (which are public schools) or their public schools (which are private schools)? Cuz if you are meaning their private schools, then you're quite mad. They are as bad or worse than ours - except Detroit. Then you have to make the comparison to the Pashtun Cheese Making schools for an fair comparison. And Detroit would still lose.

O'Donnell is a nut| 10.1.10 @ 11:11PM

"With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media..."

Decreasingly talked about in the media? That is meant to be a joke right? Maybe it is one of those jokes that was intended for British eyes only. The notion that global warming is not receiving enough coverage by the media is farcical.

matthew s harrison| 10.2.10 @ 4:06PM

I think everyone is missing the point of this video....IT IS A THREAT!

SoCon| 10.3.10 @ 6:56AM

No, Matthew, you're wrong--we get the message loud and clear--eco-nazis want to kill us. But thanks for your concern.

N| 10.4.10 @ 3:19AM

The British reaction to the film was one of fury.
See this article in the London Daily Telegraph. Even the left-wing Guardian had literally hundreds of comments hostile to the film. Read them here.

The whole " The film was intended for a British audience" schtick is just a desperate excuse.
