The Spectacle Blog

Over at the Wall Street Journal the always plugged-in Fred Barnes has written an interesting piece. Very interesting. Titled “Inside the Republican Money Machine,” Barnes reveals the inside scoop on the money raising of Republican-leaning independent groups.

What’s so interesting?

Barnes relates the Big Bucks raised by Karl Rove and ex-Bush aide and RNC Chair Ed Gillespie with their group American Crossroads. He talks of surges of needed cash sent to places like Nevada for Sharron Angle or Ohio for Rob Portman or Missouri for Roy Blunt. Another group is mentioned for sending money to finance television commercials against the New Hampshire Senate nominee of the Democrats, Paul Hodes.

All well and good.

But considering all the… ahhhh… controversy over the Delaware Senate race between Christine O’Donnell and the Castle-supporting Rove, the absence of any mention whatsoever about money being sent from the Rove group to O’Donnell is curious.

Fred Barnes is a superb Washington reporter. He never misses a trick. Which means? Which means either that he missed the opportunity to tell readers of Rove’s contributions to help O’Donnell — or that Fred Barnes missed no opportunity at all. Because there is in fact no money going from American Crossroads to O’Donnell.

If the latter really is true, then Mr. Rove apparently has yet to understand that the title of his group is taken even more seriously by millions of Americans than he can imagine.

What’s up? Are Rove and company helping O’Donnell — or not?

*throat clear* Um, not to be repetitive or anything, but can Gov. Christie go and kick Rove in the, um, well, where his balls are supposed to be?

Reaganaut| 9.24.10 @ 5:29PM

Gov. Christie was for Castle, not the nutcase. Castle will run write-in, take 40% of the vote and win the whole thing, saving the Senate for the Rs. Just relax. The witch can then go on the talk show circuit get her $ and spout pablum to her followers.
Regards,
A truly conservative DE R.

Eric Cartman| 9.24.10 @ 6:05PM

What does that have to do with my wanting Rove kicked in the balls - if he had any? Rove should be kicked in the balls - if he had any - for a lot of reasons. Kicking Rove in the balls (all together now ) - if he had any - should be a mandatory exercise for any candidate running on the Republican ticket. Putz.

Win Mcnulty| 9.27.10 @ 8:14AM

she's a nightmare and its not the witch stuff, its the lying. it keeps popping up on every topic such as how many counties she won in '08. she says two, it was zaro, then she says, I meant tied, that's untrue also, she continued to argue the case even though objective numbers said otherwise.

her '06 campaign manager says she is a fraud and not a conservative, that is liberal were in style she'd be liberal. she sounds good and she can get down in the dirt with the best of them but she has no chops except campaigning, which is good because she's done it since 2006 yet without success.

she's confident though running for us senate never having held a single job in government not even dogcatcher.

Eric Cartman| 9.27.10 @ 9:37AM

1. Phew! I'm glad you told me she never held a job in government! The pros have done such a great job so far, I would hate to spoil their winning streak with such a novice. Dodged that bullet!

2. What does this have to do with kicking Rove in the balls (all together now ) - if he had any? Stay on topic, please.

Yes, a "truly conservative DE R" would attack the truly conservative Christine O'Donnell and not the self-admitted Marxist she's running against. Of course.

You RINOs are garbage.

Jean| 9.26.10 @ 4:59PM

The Repubs need to wake up and support O'Donnell. She is not a nutcase and all they need to do is know who Castle called first after the election to know where his votes would be. He called Reid and Biden before calling O'donnell the next day. He voted for the bad programs that set up the destruction of our economy and will vote with dems more than GOP is he is in. If he runs as write-in he will caucus with dems. Bet on it.

Jon | 9.24.10 @ 2:30PM

O'Donnell is down by 16 points. She has no realistic chance of winning. Any money sent to her is essentially flushed down the toilet.

Warrior | 9.24.10 @ 2:48PM

Scott Brown was down about the same or more with similar circumstances and still won by a large margin. O'Donnell should be supported the same as any Republican candidate by the RNC. This is why many conservatives have stopped donating to the RNC and give directly to candidates.

O'Donnell is a nut| 9.24.10 @ 6:22PM

Scott Brown ran as a liberal to moderate Republican in a liberal state. O'Donnell is running as an ultraconservative in liberal state. Brown held office prior to his Senate election. O'Donnell hasn't had a real job in years. Every time someone mentions O'Donnell's lousy poll numbers, we get a pathetic "yeah but [insert name of much more viable candidate]was down in his race too" or [insert name of candidate who is not an unemployed nut who used campaign funds to pay rent]was called unelectable too" response.

I have seen people on this site compare O'Donnell to Ronald Reagan (no, I am not joking) and Joe Miller, as if Miller doesn't have an Ivy League Law Degree, wasn't a part of a successful law practice and is not a war hero. O'Donnell is a complete whackjob; comparisons to other candidates that eventually won are completely inapt.

Sean| 9.24.10 @ 2:49PM

No money = no chance to win in Delaware. We are a long way till the election and the Dems are self destructing at warp speed. Delaware is a small state and a little money just may go a long way to winning.

Democrat Chris Coons holds a double-digit lead over Republican hopeful Christine O’Donnell in the first Rasmussen Reports post-primary survey of the U.S. Senate race in Delaware.

Coons earns 53% of the vote to O’Donnell’s 42%, with leaners included. One percent (1%) prefer some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

Tyler| 9.24.10 @ 3:32PM

O'Donnell is just starting to make use of the donations to her campaign: http://hotlineoncall.nationalj.....s_sign.php

The gap will close in the following weeks. That is, unless someone finds out she's really a Martian running around in human skin with a secret plan to impose her backwards religious views on all of us before sacrificing all our children on an altar and flying away on her broomstick. But wait, we already knew that so being down 15 points isn't that bad.

O'Donnell is a nut| 9.24.10 @ 6:28PM

Being down 15 points isn't that bad? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. Yeah, 15 points down less than six weeks before the election is right where she wants to be. Give me a break. She has lost ground, not gained, in the polls since she won the primary. Anyone who sends money to her campaign is wasting money that could be spent on sane, viable candidates that are in competitive races.

Patriot| 9.24.10 @ 11:24PM

If O'Donnell's such a lost cause, why do you waste so much time and effort attacking her, moron?

Christopher Holland| 9.26.10 @ 3:46AM

She raised nearly $3 million, so there are a lot of stupid, crazy witch lovers out there who don't agree with your opinion. Which is what real conservatives do - they make up their own minds, they don't let somebody else make it for them (Carl Rove - take note). They don't seem to think they wasted their money, so it looks like you wasted you time trying to wreck her campaign.

Rich Fisher| 9.24.10 @ 3:52PM

It appears that the RINOS on this site-A. Would rather talk about how Christine will lose than do something to help and B. Will be sadly disappointed when she wins. If you morons would support ODonnell, the same as you would have expected us real conservatives to support Castle, then she would win in a walk. The fact that you would prefer an avowed Marxist to win to soothe your bruised egos says all that needs to be said about you. You are pathetic little losers. You will find out on Nov 2 that we don't need you and the Dems don't really want you. How does it feel to be irrelevant.

Tyler| 9.24.10 @ 4:01PM

Just in case people are confused, my remarks are satire. One of the drawbacks of the internet. I had hoped that the Martian comment would give it away. I have already donated multiple times to O'Donnel's campaign and may yet again.

O'Donnell is a nut| 9.24.10 @ 6:38PM

Give me a break. She would win if non-Delaware residents who can't vote in the election would only support her? Yeah, sure she would. A far-left state is not going to elect an ultraconservative, particularly one who a)hasn't had a job in years b)starts gay affair rumors about her opponent c)checks her bushes for her election opponents d)lied, in a Richard Blumenthalesque fashion, about her college degree e)uses her campaign funds to pay rent.

Not supporting a complete joke of a candidate, a candidate who has been caught lying on multiple occassions and has started vicious gay affair rumors, despite her pathetic, half-hearted denials, about a man who has served honorably for decades doesn't mean one is not a "true conservative". Trying to use support for O'Donnell as a litmus test of true conservatism is a fucking joke.

Rich, they are not RINO's they are called TROLLS. They are here to persuade people not to help O'Donnell so their ultra liberal marxist tax and spend Coons can win. If they really do support Castle, they are sore losers and not really conservatives anyway.

None of them have said a single word about O'Donnell or Castle's policies or voting record. Castle is a RINO and will vote w Democrats. O'Donnell will vote conservative down the line. All they have are personal insults. They are unknowingly helping her raise the cash though. She's hired a bunch of high ranking experts to get her moving.

You are exactly right. If they were really interested in supporting conservatives, they would help O'Donnell.

Monday, September 6th, 2010: "The Delaware Senate race doesn’t promise to hold our attention like it once promised to. Republican Mike Castle appears to have a stranglehold on the seat once held by Vice-President Joe Biden. His closest competitor now appears to be democrat Chris Coons. Joe Biden’s son Beau Biden was a challenger for the seat until Scott Brown’s unlikely win in Massachusetts. Delaware Senate Polls had Biden within 5 points of Mike Castle before he bowed out of the race. The Dl Senate race looks to be wide open for Castle."

With all due respect Mr. Lord, when you show that you have raised the millions of dollars for conservative candidates that Karl Rove has, then maybe you would have the right to cast stones about the decisions he makes. I am sick of this inter-conservative griping and complaining. We need to unite to fight the liberal Dems. Let the conservative circular firing squad stuff stop now. Its a waste of energy at such a critical moment.

O'Donnell is a nut| 9.24.10 @ 6:45PM

I completely agree. Rove has raised more money for conservative candidates than pretty much everyone this cycle. But when he makes the smart strategic decision not to waste money on an unwinnable race, we get jackasses accusing him of not being a 'true conservative" because, evidently, one cannot be a conservative if he doesn't support a pathological liar like O'Donnell.

Patriot| 9.24.10 @ 11:29PM

That you, Karl?

Tim*| 9.24.10 @ 9:02PM

" Dick Morris said labeling candidates like O’Donnell “extremist” was based on outdated political calculations.

“There is a basic misconception which the establishment has about these primaries,” Morris said. “When a tea party candidate or an ‘extremist ‘wins the primary, normally that would mean there’s a lesser chance of winning the election.

“But the fact is that analysis dates from an era in which social issues like abortion, gays, guns were the key issues. Now they’re not. Fiscal and economic concerns are more important to voters.”

“When it comes to fiscal and economic concerns, someone who is an extremist in the words of the establishment is probably more trustworthy on those issues."

Mike Rogers| 9.24.10 @ 11:16PM

The circular firing squad we need is John Cornyn vs Karl Rove - both have attempted to annoint RINOs in the primaries when helping the TEA party candidate would have a bigger chance of success, and both have been sore losers, continuing to back the RINOs after the primaries had made their rejection quite clear.
I gave up on the National RINO Support Council in Feb 2009, thanks to a particularly offensive and blatantly unconstitutional letter from Cornyn. BUT, I have spent more money than ever before, on better and more constitutionally sound candidates than ever before, and We The People are WINNING!
Remember, the 17th amendment has not been repealed, and any citizen can band together with like-minded souls to purchase the best senate candidates that money can buy anywhere in the USA. Why let George Soros own the senate uncontested?
Dust off your checkbooks and help a deserving candidate, but do not split the vote by supporting the RINOs.

Rove has raised million$ for conservative Republican candidates. The article mentions that his group has sent a lot of money to Nevada to help Sharron Angle - a Tea Party candidate! - who is in a tight race and needs all the help she can get.

O'Donnell has recently raised a bunch of money on her own, and Delaware being a small state, it's not clear she needs additional outside money.

Given her poll situation, should they be sending money to her? Or to Angle or Buck in CO, Tea Party candidates who are in much more critical contests? Or to Rossi in WA or Dio Guardi in NY, mainstream Republicans in striking distance of upset wins?

Triage is a rational process. There would be no point in sending help to DeMint in SC: he's effectively unopposed. Nor to Cam Cavasso in HI: he's got no chance at all against Inouye. Neither do the gallant Republicans in VT, MD, and the other NY seat. Coats in IN, Boozman in AR, and Hoeven in ND are cruising to easy wins. Fiorina in CA, Raese in WV, and McMahon in CT are self-financed. Not one Republican incumbent needs help, apparently.

But Toomey in PA, Kirk in IL, Blunt in MO, Huffman in OR, Miller in AK, Johnson in WI all could use help, and use it effectively.

O'Donnell? She has enough funds of her own to run a real campaign. Given the poll results, extra resources sent there would be wasted.

Patriot| 9.24.10 @ 11:32PM

CLASS ACT VS CRASS ACT...
While the "usual suspects" are whining that being taken out by a TEA party extremist should not be allowed, and that they deserve to keep "their" seat by any means, fair or foul, some losers are doing the right thing.
Check out NH for some tremendous examples:
In CD2, a split vote between a decent conservative, an angry white male, and a RINO resulted in the RINO getting the nod, so the angry white male disappeared in a puff of smoke, but the decent conservative conceded graciously and put herself and staff to work for the winner of the gubernatorial primary. The RINO doesn't need much help, but all of us in the field will at least put out signs and spread the word.
In the Gubernatorial race, it's even more interesting - not only is the CD2 runner-up helping the GOP gov candidate, but the gov runner-up is out making stump speeches with the candidate.
But in the senate race, it gets even better -when the TEA party favorite (backed by DeMint) narrowly lost to the mostly conservative establishment candidate (backed by Palin), he waited 24 hours to be sure of the counts, conceded graciously, exhorted his supporters to get on board, and finally, headed to DC to raise funds for the person who beat him! http://www.seacoastonline.com/.....-100929908
THAT, is a class act, and the losers in DE and AK would do well to learn from Ovide LaMontagne. (I'll bet that he will be back and win next time, to take out the Dem from our other seat.)

A Balrog of Morgoth| 9.25.10 @ 12:39AM

Oh, do not fret; Rove is just busy at a ribbon cutting event at the Institute of Fiscally Responsible Bush Cabinet Republicans. He will soon show up with armloads of money (Sarcasm off). He is starting the slide, already he has gone off prime time because the viewership simply turns him off. Before I went on my Rove abstinence sabbatical it was interesting to watch the body language of the Fox crew, especially Hannity, when speaking to him. The swing from architect to arch buffoon is astounding, with the real impact being the ease at which the transformation was made. The D’s and progressives exhausted themselves for years trying to orchestrate his demise; the only thing keeping the tea party flyswatter from landing full force is the fact that Fox News still is keeping him in a jar to listen to his buzzing.

JASmius | 9.25.10 @ 9:09AM

Wow, Jeff, this IS a mystery. Let's see....

Sharron Angle - slightly ahead (w/in margin of error)

Rob Portman - up double-digits

Roy Blunt - Up high single-digits

Kelly Ayotte - Up high single-digits

And Christine O'Donnell? Um, down by double-digits

Hmm. Maybe it's not such a big mystery after all.

See, there's this thing called "don't send good money after bad". That means it'd be stupid to raise money and squander it on doomed candidates instead of investing in winnable races just to appease ignorant y'Intagh tighty-righties who'll never be appeased regardless.

Besides, when did Rove ever promise to shower CO'D with independent expenditures? And, for that matter, since you're taking a veiled swipe at Fred Barnes, when did you get your JournoList membership?

albert constantine jr.| 9.25.10 @ 9:49AM

I think an important point is the need to examine what was articulated as the goal of the conservative establishment pundits, i.e. the need for a Republican majority in the House and Senate to advance conservative goals. The Republican primary voters in Delaware disagreed with the premise that candidate Castle was a superior alternative to Candidate O'Donnell in achieving this goal. Whether or not this decision makes that goal harder to achieve, the failure to support the outcome that Delaware's primary voters had the right to determine calls into question the true level of commitment on the part of these pundits.

Patriot| 9.25.10 @ 11:08AM

Constitutional conservatism (not RINOism) will never die, but it is painfully apparent Constitutional conservative government will NEVER AGAIN be achieved through the pathetic, RINO-led GOP. The only way Constitutional conservative government will be restored to America is through the people & through The Almighty GOD who created this nation & everything else. The RINO-led GOP is in a drag race to their well deserved extinction & are NOT conservative in the least. The people are fighting back & the RINO-led GOP establishment (witness the petty pissing & moaning of Tokyo Rove, Charles Krauthammer, John Cornyn, etc.) doesn't like the fact that the people are not only awake, but onto the fact the RINO-led GOP is AGAINST advancing a Constitutional conservative movement in America. The RINO-led GOP want to continue the big spending big government currently running us into bankruptcy. The ONLY THING they want to change is the name of the Party continuing America on a destructive path to financial & moral insolvency! The RINO-led GOP deserves the coming death it will experience. The people who want to restore a Constitutional conservative government with the help of Almighty GOD will succeed even after the demise of The RINO-led GOP. The RINO beast cannot die fast enough IMO. Good riddance. You can't win the big game with players from the opposing team in your huddle! RINO = leftist Democrat!

So now there's a NEW CASTLE that's a TAXER and a SERIAL something or another, but Karl Rove doesn't support CO.

But RINOs have wandered away from true conservatism, and ROVE is a synonym for WANDER and CARL spelled with a K is as bad as AMERIKA spelled with a K which is what communists and socialists and Marxists want.

Any point you draw from this is yours. I've got none.

It is becoming apparent that the “value of the dollar” is being lost by the establishment. They actually perceive that they can still exert their deep pocket influence. Toto has pulled away the curtain. Money talks but the money having the say is that which is being “invested” by the voters/taxpayers through direct donation. Cash is no longer the trump card of the Roves, message is no longer the vehicle of the MSM, and the term “architect” is an inside joke for someone who has make a living building sand castles. The money watch is by us parents as the debt of our children and grandchildren mounts.

No money to O'Donnell-no big deal. Rove's negative rants about O'Donnell were off base. So much for a Republican gentleman. His backroom deal w/ Castle went down the drain with all the scumb. Rove's vengeance should be within. He never defended Pres. Bush with negatives to dems . Why now w/ a Republican?

Why should Rove seek any vengeance at all? I thought he was supposed to be on OUR side.

Looks like Rove is only out for himself.
