Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) had a heated exchange with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a fellow Arizonan, today on the issue of immigration. Fox News captures some of the sparks:

“What we have done in the past two years is put more resources on the Southwest border than ever before, both in federal [efforts] and providing resources to the states,” she said during a six-minute exchange with McCain that became increasingly heated. “We have removed and will be removing more criminal aliens from this country than ever before, and I think that’s the right policy. … I measure what we’re doing by the results, and what should be going up is going up, and what should be going down is going down”

McCain, however, suggested Napolitano, who was governor of Arizona before joining the Obama administration, is the one misinterpreting things.

“From my visits to the southern part of our state, they don’t see this dramatic improvement, Madam Secretary,” he told her. “In fact, they are more worried than they’ve ever been. They see continued home invasions, they see continued requirements for our government to put up signs that say, ‘Warning to our citizens’ that they are in a drug smuggling area, a human smuggling area. They don’t have the same security that people do in other parts of our country.”

These hearings came as the Obama administration is being tied to memoranda looking at ways the executive branch could become more lenient toward illegal immigrants. Senate Republicans are concerned that the administration is pursuing a backdoor amnesty, a charge DHS denies vehemently. But the administration is clearly focusing on the removal of illegal immigrants who are convicted criminals while largely leaving the rest alone.  McCain has traditionally been an amnesty supporter but moved to the right on the issue during his primary campaign against immigration hawk J.D. Hayworth.

Great, an argument between two amnesty favoring democrats.

jgo| 9.24.10 @ 2:26PM

Please, be nice; the radical leftist party wants us to call them Democratics.

Hayworth is a moderate.

Right on! Between the two, I don't know which one is the biggest liar and fraud.

david2| 9.22.10 @ 6:06PM

I wish that these "supposedly" intelligent people would use the correct terminology. They are not immigrants. They are illegal aliens. Criminal invaders. We have immigration laws, as do other countries. These invaders are flouting our laws. No amount of hand-wringing, heart-wrenching, excuse-making smoke and mirrors will change the truth. The United States Constitution is for United States Citizens. PERIOD! QED

Gov Brewer should activate all of her states national guard personnel and put them on her borders since Obama won't do it. Also, start making agreements with other Governors' to do likewise and send them to Arizona for border guard duty. then see what the Feds will say about that!

Pretty scary we have to depend on McAmnesty to protect our borders.

I refuse to read beyond the heading. That is called enabling.

Saw this on TV. Kept waiting for someone to remind Nappy that they're ALL criminals---by definition. Why didn't someone tell her the law---which she swore to uphold---requires her to remove all those who have entered our country illegally. By not even attempting to enforce the law she becomes an accessory and subject to arrest and indictment herself.

Nap0olitano (like McCain) is a political fraud. As governor of AZ she wanted, among other things, to give illegals drivers licenses. She should be prosecuted for failing to uphold federal law on illegal immigration.

Americans, I watched the hearing and saw Janet Napolitano distort the truth. It is pointless for her to say, "The border in Arizona is more secure than it has ever been." My reply to her is, "What is going on in Mexico today was not going on when you were Gov. of AZ., so the security of our border is inadequate. Obama suing AZ for protecting its citizens and allowing fifteen signs to be placed in Arizona is an act of treason by Obama. He is playing games with the lives of Americans. The signs point out that each area is dangerous, and it is another attempt to make Americans fearful. The solution is to finish building the border fence. Yes, it can be secured. Our military are fighting to protect terrorists from reaching our shores. We must identify all illegals in Arizona and throughout the nation, as well as those in Sanctuary Cities. Do we have sleeper cells anywhere or terrorists? Start with the identification of illegals, and protect Americans. You are pushing for Latino and other illegal votes now, just as you did when you had Acorn registering illegal voters for you when you were elected. Stop your lawsuits on Gov. Brewer, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and all of the sheriffs. They are doing their jobs. Obama, you are not. Janet Napolitano, start telling the truth. Morton had stated publicly that you have limited funds for picking up illegals, yet he has not requested more funds from Congress.

We live here. Many of the Latinos are locals, conservative, and just as angry about the safety issues. Many families are mixed ethnically from a long history here. You're correct. The issue is about CRIMINALS. If you like hiking, running rivers, or just getting out to visit family and friends the traditional legislative process in the Sonoran Desert still works... S.B. .308 and S.B. .44 These don't cost as much in taxpayer funds. Heck, we'll even bring in our newer legal "residents"... S.B. 7.62 Be safe out there, folks. Support your state, county, and city law enforcement and first responders.

Steve Paramore| 9.24.10 @ 10:03AM

Immigration policy should be really, really simple....if you violated the law to get here, if you are a no green card, illegal alien.....you are in effect an invader....get out of America, or (1) go to prison, or (2) die !

RAMAPOMAN| 9.24.10 @ 4:44PM

Lets face it folks !J.Napolitano runs inteference for this Obama Agenda. She is appointed, never challenged,Morally inept, and Factually Challenged. The problem I have with her and her Cronies,is Do WE CONTINUE TO LET THESE MISFITS OFF?or,will we just accept her LIES.SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR HER MALFEASANCE IN OFFICE.

pearl| 9.25.10 @ 3:00AM

Right on. The contents of the White House and the Cabinet should be rounded up and prosecuted. Every one of them is guilty of breaking the law and their oaths of office.

John McCain deserves praise and respect--not scorn.

David| 10.1.10 @ 6:21PM

McCain deserves praise?

In over three decades in Washington McCain has gone from "Maverick" to mouthpiece for special interests and become the ultimate Washington insider. Throughout his career he has taken more than $3 million from Wall Street’s big banks and, though he had the gall to chastise Republican Senate candidate J. D. Hayworth as a "paid lobbyist," he's in the back pocket of BP lobbyists as one of their highest paid politicians-- second only to President Obama, of course. Praise!?

It’s clear his loyalties are not with Arizona, much less the nation. It's also clear that he's not a conservative. His position on immigration speaks volumes: He voted to kill the border fence; voted against permanently barring gang members and terrorists from the US; voted in favor of social security benefits for illegal aliens who commit identity fraud; supported in-state tuition for illegal aliens, and supports mass amnesty in the style of Ted Kennedy who would let 'em all in. Now, with the November elections in sight, he's back-pedaling, sending the voters emails about how he and Senator Jon Kyl are teaming up for combatting illegal immigration, which will include tighter controls over our border, inluding the stationing of troops, etc, etc.

No,he's not even close to being a conservative. He has opposed the Bush tax cuts, and supports dubious scientific claims about global warming and the environment, while warmly respecting Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and boasting about his work with Joe Lieberman, Russ Feingold and Ted Kennedy. In fact, with his support of the Bloomberg-Brady ban on private firearm sales, he's become a flag carrier for enemies of the Second Amendment.

I remember watching him in 2008 on a nationwide televised debate for Republican presidential candidates. He was asked by the moderator how he would address the sagging economy and the current mortgage crisis facing the nation. His response was grinning and pointing out that "economics is not one of my strong points." Many of us took a deep breath, wondering why in the hell he was running for President when what was desperately required was an individual with management experience and an understanding of basic economics.

So, the question is, why is McCain running for re-election as Senator? The answer to that question is revealing. In many respects, McCain is what's wrong with America. He is an adept, proven as an ambitious careerist, concerned principally with winning votes in order to keep himself in office with all its emollients and privileges-- even if it means embracing causes which adversely affect the welfare of Arizona and the nation.

Americans deserve better than this. At the very least, their elected leaders should deal truthfully with them. Or should honesty and truthfulness be required of only decent, law-abiding people and not politicians?

At the very least, McCain should quit this nonsense about being a Republican with core conservative principles, because all he does is come off as a lying fraud.
