Amherst College.
May 23, 1985.
The campus newspaper: the Amherst Student.
The much dismissed article written by now Delaware Senate
candidate Chris Coons that bore the title: “Chris Coons: The Making
of a Bearded Marxist.”
(A serious
hat tip to Dan Riehl over at Riehl World
View.)
Now the title of this article has been bandied about in a
few media quarters, only to be laughed at and dismissed. Coons
himself leads us to believe that he was just joshing.
The problem? No one is taking the time to really
read the contents of the article and connect it to what’s going on
right this minute in American politics.
As mentioned earlier this week, if what Christine
O’Donnell did in high school is important, than what we have here
is a very disturbing look at the mind of a man who now thinks he’s
entitle to a seat in the United States Senate.
Here’s Chris Coons on Chris Coons:
“The point that others ignore is that I was ready to
change. Experiences at Amherst my first two years made me skeptical
and uncomfortable with Republicanism…”
“Kenya provided a needed catalyst; …I studied under a
bright and eloquent Marxist professor at the University of
Nairobi…”
“Some of the ‘Leftists’ that I met were terrifyingly
persuasive, although I never admitted that.”
”…several professors challenged the basic
assumptions about America and world relations with which I had
grown up…and undermined the accepted value of progress and the
cultural superiority of the West.”
“I came to suspect…that the ideal of America as ‘a beacon
of freedom and justice, providing hope for the world’ was not
exactly based on reality.”
“What do other nations think of us? Can private enterprise
and democracy solve the problems of developing nations? Is Marxism
an evil ideology, leading millions into totalitarian slavery? These
were some of the questions in the back of my mind…”
“I realize that Kenya and America are very different, but
experiences like this warned me that my own favorite beliefs in the
miracles of free enterprise and the boundless opportunities to be
had in America might be largely untrue.”
In short then, Chris Coons the Senate candidate is
determined to get to the Senate and be an agent of the Obama
radical redistributionist agenda.
And the person that stands in the way is Christine
O’Donnell.
Any questions?
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 10:54AM
I have a question. Are you joking?
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 11:01AM
If so, it's not nearly as funny as MSNBC.
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 11:39AM
But seriously, folks. Unlike his opponent, this guy actually has a record. Why don't you focus on that?
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 11:52AM
" who doesn't regret the '80s, to some extent? "
-Christine O'Donnell
Nice of her to swear off national tv after softball practice on Hannity. Mr. Lord, as you said to me a few weeks ago "Those who run for office and seek power have a responsibility to get out there and answer questions from all comers." Does that no longer apply? I eagerly await your blog post attacking Ms. O'Donnell for avoiding questioning.
Jeffrey Lord| 9.22.10 @ 12:06PM
Candidates for statewide office in Delaware should be talking to Delaware media..Where, by the way, is Chris Coons? I haven't seen him on Fox. But I bet he's talking to his Delaware friends....
Seriously, having done this in the long ago...only presidential candidates spend time constructively engaging with the national media at this point in a campaign. If you run for Mayor of Hoboken...what good is being grilled by NBC? The local NBC affiliate or Fox affiliate, on the other hand, becomes infinitely more important.
There are mere weeks left in this campaign....O'Donnell, whom I've met and spoken with several times over the years, has been quite deliberately and savagely attacked by national media types who hate conservatives. She is smart, gutsy and fearless. Why in the world should she should spend time with a clearly and deliberately hostile national media at this point ...knowing a lot of these people overlook everything from Obama's cocaine use to Kennedy's Chappaquidick or Biden's plagiarism but make her time in high school ---high school!!!!! - some sort of telling moment?? She should be in Delaware talking to Delaware voters and Delaware media. And she is doing just that.
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 12:41PM
Mr. Lord,
Fair enough. It appears we both agree that she shouldn't have been on Hannity last night.
Yes, Ms. O'Donnell has been attacked by national media types, as Mr. Coons has been attacked by national media types (such as, for example, you). I'm not sure what your point is. It's a race that seems to have excited national interest.
Obama did cocaine, Bush the younger was an alcoholic, etc. We've all done stupid things when we were young. I think it's irrelevant. Judging from your rants concerning Mr. Coons, you apparently don't. If Ms. O'Donnell's ridiculous comments when she was young aren't important, why are Mr. Coons?
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 1:00PM
Maybe because she seems to have grown up and he hasn't?
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 1:23PM
For at least six months after being fired, Miss O’Donnell suffered enormous pain, cried frequently at the sense of personal loss and failure caused by ISI, and at the sense of injustice, and could not sleep at night, often wide-awake, replaying the whole scene in her mind, until 5:30 am, and has suffered from understandable and resulting depression.
That's Ms. O'Donnell in 2005. Does that sound like a strong, grown-up conservative to you?
Jeffrey Lord| 9.22.10 @ 1:53PM
Wow. No Republican could say what you just wrote and emerge alive, scalded forever as sexist, insensitive, a moron, a neanderthal etc.
Either you are a conservative...or at a minimum you are abandoning one of the prime tenets of modern liberalism - feminism - just because O'Donnell is a conservative woman. Next thing you know you'll believe Paula Jones told the truth, Juanita and Kathleen and Jennifer and all the rest....but then, it's only about sex, right?
We don't have the time in this election cycle or the next 100 election cycles to plumb those liberal depths....which essentially says that if the woman is a liberal, an O'Donnell-like complaint is justified if not heroic (see: Anita Hill) But if a conservative, she's nuts. The nuts and sluts argument, as it were. And you are half-way there....
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 3:24PM
That sounds like what it is, cut and pasted from her lawyer's complaint.
Aside from Mr. Lord's comments below, do you really want to start comparing selected and extended quotes from senatorial candidates lawyers handiwork?
I'll start with a paraphrase - I forget where the billing records were. Tag, you're it.
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 4:44PM
Mr. Lord,
I didn't realize being a feminist meant one believed whatever a woman told you. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Ms. O'Donnell's lawsuit was justified. I really know almost nothing about it.
But here's what I'm trying to get at. Ms. O'Donnell doesn't have much of a record (in all seriousness, has she held a job since since got fired? I havne't been able to find out). When I ask conservatives why they like her, they talk about her strong conservative values. But where's the evidence? Instead of filing a lawsuit, why didn't she just 'put her man pants on' and find another job? Remember, this was back in 2005, before the Marxists ruined the economy.
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 5:12PM
OK - wholly serious now. She may have plenty of things to answer for, and many unknown positions on issues, as well as character questions.
All that said, what about Mr. Coons? Considering what we know of O'Donnell, after several days or weeks of furious digging and over the top commentary, the extremely little comparative analysis of Mr. Coons reveals a lot.
Sure he's got a record as an elected official, but it doesn't seem very impressive. And what jobs has he held - I have no idea. Same with the POTUS.
The point being, put side all the irrelevance and emotion, and you've got a relative unknown (but apparently with a very strong cadre of supporters who must know something) vs. a slightly less unknown, but with a larger group of existing constituents who have reason to question his capability.
Add to that the party labels, and it sets the stage clearly. She may get sunk by innuendo, or mistakes to come, but so may he with some mistakes already made to add in.
I've not heard of any criminal or ethical issues in either case, so that seems a wash, though a starting negative for those seeking bigger government with its accompanying bigger corruption.
Seems like he has more to lose from here til election day.
DRed| 9.22.10 @ 5:42PM
I doubt he's that impressive a candidate either. I assume the Democrats thought they were going to be losing another election to Mike Castle. It's funny how things work out.

Delaware's Chris Coons'
eight year career in business at
Wilmington's W.L. Gore & Associates
as legal counsel

the question of his

He is a capitalist.

Patriot| 9.23.10 @ 10:36PM
Oh, boo hoo--quit your whining; Coons tarred himself with the stench of communism. Damned Marxists.
Catherine in Tulsa| 10.15.10 @ 1:23PM
She actually isn't. She went into hiding for the two weeks leading up to the debate. And my issues aren't with her high school days, they are with her 2005 IRS lien, her 17 years to pay off her college loan, her additional judgement from FD for unpaid expenses, her foreclosure in spring of 2008 (before the economy tanked, so save me the rhetoric about being like me), and her 2010 to date expenses of 20K from her campaign money for personal expenses. THOSE are my issues with her. And I have a copy of the IRS lien if you want to see it.
Leroy Whitby| 9.22.10 @ 11:12AM
My core beliefs were pretty well set by college. I believe Coons were; he has raised taxes while saying he wouldn't 3 times in Delaware. He hasn't stopped being a leftist like most former Marxists. Means he likely still is a Marxist at heart. People should take this seriously. They didn't with Obama, and we've had . . . Obama.
Catherine in Tulsa| 10.15.10 @ 1:27PM
I am very sorry for you that your life experiences have not helped you grow and learn. It is sad that you are the same person now that you were at 22. I can only assume that you never faced any setbacks, disappointments, failures, embarrassments, etc to help you grow. Even COD admits to maturing her beliefs.
BoxwoodDE| 9.22.10 @ 11:25AM
Why are you wasting your time flogging this lame 'bearded marxist' meme rather than promoting O'Donnell's qualifications to become a US Senator?
Oh wait....
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 11:31AM
At least he's clean shaven now!
Interested Conservative| 9.22.10 @ 11:32AM
Bald, too. And he wears suits to work. He's practically a republican!
Jeffrey Lord| 9.22.10 @ 11:39AM
She's smart enough not to be a Marxist. And that's a pretty serious qualification.
The Ruling Class has a problem with attractive GOP women who aren't rich...
Why doesn't Chris Coons detail his philosophy?
Ohh, right.
The trashing of O'Donnell is hilariously telling of the insecurities of the Left.
chris lynch| 9.22.10 @ 11:06PM
The problem isn't that O'Donnell is attractive or poor.
The problem is that she is
- inexperienced (has no experience in government) and
- unqualified (has no advanced degree, took 23 years to get her BA when it usually takes four, has sued her former employer for discrimination for $6.9 million and has been sued by Farleigh Dickinson to pay her past due bill .)

Actually, what his history seems to mean is that HE likes making money. So do most socialists. The test of belief in the capitalist system isn't whether the believer likes making money, it's whether the believer extends that right to others as well.
Patriot| 9.23.10 @ 10:38PM
Coons is like most Marxists--he likes spending other people's money.
taj| 9.22.10 @ 1:10PM
What do you mean by qualifications? Since you asked the question without answering it, to use a cheap propaganda technique, I will answer it for you to show what real qualifications people expect from their Senators.
The Senator from Delaware is supposed to represent the best interests of the people of Delaware, protect the state's sovereignty in relative to and provide oversight of the Federal government. The Senator does this by listening to the people, reading the bills then letting people what the impact will be on them, and voting for what the people want.
Chris Coons is attacking O'Donnell because if he just said what he really will do then he will not be electable. That is what ever Harry Reid tells him to do and vote for the Obama agenda .
See the only real qualification people care about these days is this; do you work for us and will do what we want or do you work for the Democratic party?
Stephen| 9.22.10 @ 11:43AM
Thank you for much needed background information. I'm not from Delaware but I hope this information plus Coons' record is exposed to enough Delaware voters that shows his extreme/radical and out-of-the-mainstream views.
TexasTele| 9.22.10 @ 11:55AM
This is Obama all over again. His history shows he is a Marxist and the media wants to dismiss it as not relevant. Marxism is Coon's ideology and thus it is the most relevant thing about him. His record reinforces this as well.
Ken (Old Texican)| 9.22.10 @ 12:32PM
You know what, folks?
Some imbecile in Delaware is going to vote for this squirrel, Coons.
Ain't America wonderful?
taj| 9.22.10 @ 12:47PM
OK the liberal trolls are all over these comments.
Qualifications is a distraction from not dealing with what Chris Coons will do in office and how he will damage business and freedom.
Chris Coons will not talk about his positions because he is unelectable if he did.
Here are Chris Coons' qualifications for not electing him (questions he does not want to answer):
1. Will not vote to repeal Obama care and favors a single payer program
2. Will not repeal the massive financial regulations
3. Will vote for Cap and Trade
4. Will not extend the Bush tax cuts
5. Favors increase in taxes and a national VAT tax
6. Favors Obama's agenda of income distribution and government takeover of the economy.
This clearly disqualifies him from what the people of Delaware need or want.
So Chris, just debate O'Donnell on the issues and let the people of Delaware know where you stand if you are soooooo qualified?
Nicole| 9.22.10 @ 1:01PM

The USA is totally communist/marxist and bolshevik. It has been ever since it was subverted and taken over by the International Bankers.

Yeah, Jeff, I have a question: If keeping Chris "The American Lenin" Coons out of the U.S. Senate is such a priority for you, why did you do everything in your power to ensure the primary defeat of the only Republican who would have defeated him?
Deborah D | 9.23.10 @ 7:21AM
See about three posts up, number 3 in taj's qualifications for not electing Coons, and you'll have your answer. It applies to Castle as well.
Jim Puetz| 9.23.10 @ 10:42AM
Where does Coons stand on past, present, and future taxes in our state ? I think he's a taxing master.
Peg C.| 9.24.10 @ 9:43AM
DRed and a few others must be working from the WH or DNC basements.
Thom1s| 9.24.10 @ 7:22PM
Amherst College, eh?
That explains it.
As far back as the 1950's sneering at America was in vogue at this elite and oh so cool center of "higher education", a la this "joke" that appeared in the campus newspaper, the Amherst Student:
"Say something funny."
"John Foster Dulles".
Where better to indoctrinate impressionable students -- whose parents are being taken to the cleaners financially -- on the glories of Marxism than a politically correct propaganda factory like this?
Remelian| 10.13.10 @ 8:03AM
I live work and play in New Castle County Delaware. I barely know Chris Coons. His biggest achievemnt to date was the building of a new County Police headquarters. We have seen our property taxes increase. Fire is voluntary Fire departments in neighborhoods.
In the last month, we have not seen a county police car in our subdivison, I think they are all our on I 95, I 295 and I 495 writing tickets to get more money for the county.
My son's wallet was stolen out of his car the other night. Do you think NCC Police would come investigate? Nope a phone call and not even a report number.
When you call for a non-emergency it take hours and hours for them to call you back (like when our lock was cut off the shed and expensive tools stolen).
I was not a Chritine O'Donnell Supporter. I voted for Mike Castle in the Primary, but I am now a Christine O'Donnell Supporter if only to stop this tax and spend guy who once whether tongue in cheek or not called himself a bearded marxist...
Note he was an ATTORNEY for Gore, not a supervisor or grunt.
Jason | 10.14.10 @ 9:52AM
Is there a reason why you left out a link to the entire article and, inparticular, this:
I spent the spring of my junior year in Africa on the St. Lawrence Kenya Study Program. Going to Kenya was one of the few real decisions I have made; my friends, family, and professors all advised against it, but I went anyway. My friends now joke that something about Kenya, maybe the strange diet, or the tropical sun, changed my personality; Africa to them seems a catalytic converter that takes in clean-shaven, clear-thinking Americans and sends back bearded Marxists.
The point that others ignore is that I was ready to change. Experiences at Amherst my first two years made me skeptical and uncomfortable with Republicanism, enough so that I wanted to see the Third World for myself to get some perspective on my beliefs.
http://s3.mediamatters.org/sta.....mherst.pdf
All so telling that the Spectator elects to edit the article to mislead their readers. Its takes a smart publication to realize the gullibility of the American electorate.
amazondoc| 10.14.10 @ 1:29PM
Josh, that's exactly what I was thinking. Attempting to mislead the public through selective editing seems to be a forte of the Right. Shades of Shirley Sherrod! One would think that Mr. Lord might have learned something from the recent public embarrassment of Mr. Breitbart, but perhaps not!
