Excuse me, sir, Mr. Rove, may I ask a question? When are you
going to go on TV and criticize Lisa Murkowski? Here was a lady who
swore she would abide by the decision of primary voters, and then
didn’t. That makes her a liar. Here is a lady who spent an entire
announcement speech without a SINGLE mention of principle. Her only
argument was that she is somehow more for Alaska than anybody else
and that the sainted (and ethically challenged) Ted Stevens was her
friend. Nice work, that: claiming an endorsement from a recently
dead man who no longer can speak for himself. Where I come from,
that’s smarmy. It’s like Jesse Jackson going on TV wearing clothes
that he claimed were covered in MLK’s blood.
So if you, Mr. Rove, are so concerned with the Repubilican brand
and so concerned with Republicans winning back the Senate, why
aren’t you out there blasting Murkowski? Inquiring minds want to
know. Inquiring minds urged caution about O’Donnell but didn’t go
on the air trashing her in the nastiest of terms after she won.
Inquiring minds realized that was counterproductive. Now inquiring
minds want to know why there is a double-standard so that
conservatives (even ones with baggage) who upset the apple cart
continue to be trashed after they are the party’s nominee, while
liberal Republicans who upset the apple cart in order to screw over
the Republican nominee get a free pass. These are the same
inquiring minds who rushed to your defense, based on principle and
the facts, when NOBODY else did, when you were falsely accused of
digging for sexual dirt on former Alabama governor Don Siegelman.
Without thanks from you, I might add, and without you ever
returning phone calls. These are the same inquiring minds whom you
treated rudely on another important occasion BEFORE the inquiring
minds rushed to your defense — again, rushing to your defense on
principle and on facts DESPITE being treated rudely by you and
despite the fact that you wouldn’t return phone calls. Inquring
minds, Mr. Rove, want to know if your anger ever extends to
Republicans to your left? And if you ever, ever can or will
acknowledge that some of your decisions and advice led to the
situation in which conservatives have rightly felt so abandoned
that they rally around even flawed vessels in order to send a
message that business as usual in the Beltway must stop?
Inquiring minds want to know if you really are a party builder,
or just an “architect” of a party for insiders. What’s more
important — the insiders’ club, or the party — or, better yet, of
the philosophical movement that carried your man to victory in two
elections without getting much thanks or action in return?
Some of us, Mr. Rove, are appreciative that you are raising a
ton of money that is going to be used to help elect more
conservative candidates over less conservative candidates in the
general election. But we don’t understand why you give such short
shrift to the ground troops, the grassroots citizens with no
interests in jobs or favors but merely a love of country, who are
doing even more for the cause now than your vaunted (and deservedly
praised) micro-targeting did in 2000 through 2004. And why can’t
you use your platform to blast the heck out of the SPecters and
Murkowskis of the world who stick a knife in the back of the party
to which they swore allegiance? Where is your voice when it’s
needed in those circumstances?
These questions are respectfully laid before you, with a hope
that you will see the light and with a sincere gratitude for some
of the good things you have done, by a seriously inquiring
mind.

Good questions, and I would like to know as well! His book gave very little attention to anyone other than political power brokers and elected officials.
I am beginning to think we would be better off without political consultants.

"Without thanks from you, I might add, and without you ever returning phone calls."
Funny, I sent him an email 8/12, and the end of that month he wrote back saying I am anti-family for criticizing the Bush dynasty as being similar to the Kennedys in their pursuing power.
BTW I thought the photos in his book were far better than the text: the shot of he and Bush in a doorway of Air Force One on 9/11; a shot of Rove appropriately eating pork at an 'Other White Meat' convention.
Le Cracquere| 9.18.10 @ 1:37PM
Fair questions. But I'll reserve judgment until I see Monday's & Tuesday's columns. (Maybe Rove IS composing a response to all this.)
Kent| 9.18.10 @ 1:54PM
Quinn,
Good question for The Architect.
Now, for all, there has been huge amount of infighting among those of us on the conservative side. See the posts to earlier Quin blogs. It is time now to put aside the minor differences and unite in the huge battle to get our nominated candidates elected. In my state of Ohio it means I need to do all I can to help both John Kasich and Rob Portman get elected, though neither is as conservative as I would like. If Portman behaves like George Voinovich I will just have to organize a Tar and Feathers Brigade in the future. For now, all firepower will be aimed at the Democrats, with some held in reserve for pundits who trash our candidates after the people have voted them in, such as Karl Rove, The Arsonist.
So Quin, though I may have disagreed with appoint here or there, we need you in this battle. We also need your readers. Let's get ready for battle, and turn the muskets toward the enemy, which is in retreat.
Regards,
Kent From Ohio

I agree. The primaries are over, so it is time for a temporary cease fire with the RINO establishment. Many important Republican party issues like the ones here should be tabled until after the election.
The bad news is that RINO hunting season has ended. The good news is that it's DINO hunting time! (Democrat hunting)
Nolann Ryann| 9.19.10 @ 12:23PM
Unfortunately the RINOs that inhabit the left of the R party see conservatives as a greater enemy than the statists in the D party. The Murkowski and Castle reactions were entirely predictable. Party loyalty only runs one way with RINOs. Support us because we can win, yet when they get their clock cleaned in a party primary they get exposed as to what they truly embody; personal privilige, vanity and self importance. They have never advanced the cause of conservatism. It is unpalatable to them.
Jack Bauer| 9.20.10 @ 5:59AM
Siegfried, you have drawn the correct line in the sand, but it appears that the some elements within the RINO establishment are not really interested in a cease fire.
You watch Castle too, he'll do something really awful any day soon.
Alan Brooks| 9.20.10 @ 10:16AM
Don't you know that Bush and his father were as responsible as anyone in turning the silk purse of the post-Cold War legacy into a sow's ear? the Bushes are merely gifted hacks, as Nixon was.
Where does this misplaced loyalty to such blatant GOP opportunists come from? Reagan nostalgia?
Patriot| 9.24.10 @ 2:13AM
You're an Obama ass-kisser extraordinaire and you're asking us this question? Obama's just a hack, not even a gifted hack.

Nick| 9.18.10 @ 2:37PM
Mr. Hillyer,
Excellent points, sir.
Far superior to the "pragmatic" arguments against voting for Miss O'Donnell.
May I make a suggestion, or two?
Devote more space here at TAS to calling the GOP machine, both RNC and NRSC, to account.
By my count, there are 30 fairly solid "red states" at this time. Out of the 60 senates seats in these 30 red states, 25 are currently held by democrats. Why is this?
Why haven't the resources of the national party organizations been used over the years to make sure these red states were held by Republicans?
Why did they waste millions of dollars on the campaigns of RINO's like John and Linc Chaffee, Jim Jeffords, Arlen S-P-E-C-T-E-R, and the Maine twins, since '94?
Why were democrats like Dorgan, Conrad, Daschel, Harkin, Lincoln, Pryor, Landrieu, etc. allowed to win re-election without an all out fight to defeat them?
All this complaining about possibly losing an eastcoast seat totally misses the larger problem of democrats holding so many red state seats. We would have 60 seats if this had been priorty #1.
That way, any blues states Republicans picked up, would be icing on the cake.
Also, please ask your colleagues to do some stories about closing the GOP primaries in states like Michigan, for the '12 elections. If democrats can vote for our nominee, we will get someone worse than McLame.

Jim| 9.19.10 @ 1:55AM
"Why were democrats like Dorgan, Conrad, Daschel, Harkin, Lincoln, Pryor, Landrieu, etc. allowed to win re-election without an all out fight to defeat them?" As a California, I wondered why during Boxer and Fienstein re-election bids, the Republican candidates were no where to be seen and in some years, you didn't even know that a republican was running? Why has the RNC or whoevers deem people worthy to be nominated to such positions are all but forgotten about in this once great state? Don't expect any help from the RNC Carly, unless you're just as liberal as Boxer
Nick| 9.19.10 @ 12:34PM
Jim,
If I had to guess, I would say it is a combination of California's extremely expensive media market and it being a very blue state.
Califonia would be one of those "icing on the cake" states, that I mentioned above.

Let's see if I can answer these questions using my Magic 8-Ball:
1. When are you going to go on TV and criticize Lisa Murkowski? Ask again later.
2. Inquiring minds, Mr. Rove, want to know if your anger ever extends to Republicans to your left? Outlook not so good.
3. And if you ever, ever can or will acknowledge that some of your decisions and advice led to the situation in which conservatives have rightly felt so abandoned that they rally around even flawed vessels in order to send a message that business as usual in the Beltway must stop? Don't count on it.
4. And why can't you use your platform to blast the heck out of the Specters and Murkowskis of the world who stick a knife in the back of the party to which they swore allegiance? Better not tell you now.
5. Where is your voice when it's needed in those circumstances? Reply hazy, try again.
And finally, a question for me, Eric Cartman:
6. WHy are you such a chicken shit, putzy, dickhead? Is it because you 're such a wimpy ass coward? A coward that sat there not uttering a word as the Left ran over the country, traitorously lying about the wars and giving our enemies aid and comfort in the process? Are you such a POS that you would quietly sit down the hall from a ally and "friend" letting him be dragged down by the Lefty scum and their pals in the press all the while knowing it was that creep Armitage who "leaked" the name of that dumb asshole, Plame? Are you that big of a pussy-ass dickhead? Signs point to yes

Curly Smith| 9.18.10 @ 3:56PM
Q. Inquiring minds, Mr. Rove, want to know if your anger ever extends to Republicans to your left?
A. Yes, when they run poor campaigns and lose.
If you're Karl Rove then you want people of both ideologies in your party to cover both sides of every issue and ensure that it never gets solved. Think of all the issues that generate significant campaign contributions (or just consider abortion)... do you really think that the Wizards Of Smart really want the issue resolved and end such a lucrative fund raising vehicle? If you're unsure, recall Bart Stupak who was an unrepentant pro-lifer until it mattered.
Nick| 9.18.10 @ 6:32PM
Mr. Smith,
Good point.
I believe the reason Karl is so upset about these T.E.A Party victories, is that somehow it effects him financially. Probably with his 527 org., American Crossroads .
Funny, I've never heard Rove, or Fox News, give a disclaimer about this, whenever he's on.
grumpygresh| 9.18.10 @ 5:01PM
So much for moral rectitude. We have Murky who stated that she would abide by the primary voters' outcome, we have Crist who said he would not mount an independent run, and we have Mike Castle, the sore loser who refused to congratulate O'Donnell. If Rove really cared about the party, he would condemn this arrogant behavior.
Rove has lost credibility among most grass roots conservatives and if he continues on this path, he will have to join the likes of Joe Scarborough, K. Parker, David Frum, David Brooks and Colin Powell.
Rove should drop out of the Republican party and join the Pity Party.

I wish Rove would just go away.
Mimi| 9.18.10 @ 8:55PM
Paul...I loved President Geo. W Bush...The only thing he ever did that I didn't like was...NOT stick-up for himself. Weak on his own defense..He should have blasted the DEMS, whose actions were traitorous. I didn't read Rove's book but always respected him...Real surprised at the anger burst on T.V...He owes an apology to all of us, and especially the winner of the DELAWARE Primary.
Warrior | 9.18.10 @ 10:04PM
Stick up for himself? He increased entitlements with medicare D and SCHIP, tried to reach across the aisle with Ted K for amnesty reform, reduced our liberties with the Patriot Act, ran large deficits, started two unfunded wars (one was a new strategy called "preemptive"), bailed out AIG and then the banks, guaranteed auto companies would not fail ensuring the unions could maintain their control, etc. The only thing conservative about W was his stances on abortion, stem cell research and gay marriage.
John Schuh| 9.19.10 @ 1:07AM
Regarding the wars: George Bush did not start them. These were started by the Iranians mullahs in 1979. Reagan failed to see the threat, except to make things worse by allying us with Saddam Hussein. We won't mention Irangate--Oh, I just did. Bush I failed to take care of business in 1991 and Clinton just let things drift. The outcome was 9/11. Sorry that you are incapable of realizing that
religious zealots are just as dangerous as secular ones like Nazis and Communists.
Warrior | 9.19.10 @ 9:09AM
The point is that the wars were not funded and one was preemptive. You would get no argument from me as to the need to kill/destroy the Taliban (which we still haven't totally accomplished) and their supporters. Even today we are not fighting the religious zealots in their entirety, to do so would be the end of the Hamas, larger parts of Saudi Arabia, etc.
Patriot| 9.19.10 @ 1:17PM
GWB chose to go to war twice and then fought them with half-assed measures (too politically correct). If you're going to start something you'd better damn well be willing to go all the way.
It's ridiculous to blame this mess on Reagan--he was pre-occupied with "little" matters such as the Cold War and the USSR. Remember? GWB can't hold a candle to the great man.
MikeW| 9.19.10 @ 7:34PM
Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11 and removing him has made this country less safe.
The Iraq War and Karl Rove are the reasons why we have a Democrat majority in the House and Senate and they are why we have Obama.
George W. and Rove shoved it up our collective national rear ends.
Turd Blossom Rove is simply intolerable. One of the reasons I no longer watch Fox.

AmyAim| 9.18.10 @ 11:17PM
Great piece by Hillyer. One correction I'd make is that if we are pointing out that ol' Murkowski is a liar & more concerned with her own re-election than with doing what is truly right & best for the people of her state, then I would not agree that she is a lady; she is only a woman, a female. A lady is a totally different being. Otherwise, thanks for saying & asking what so many of us are!
John Schuh| 9.19.10 @ 1:10AM
Indeed. I won't use the word, but doubt should could produce a litter of puppies.
Mary Carlisle| 9.19.10 @ 12:03AM
Eric Cartman, that was brilliant. But I would like to add that some good has come from Rove's classless behavior Tuesday night. The tea-light of truth is shining on him now. He, and others like him, are being outed. And We The People are keeping a body count. His name is the most recent one to go on the list. It just helps us recognize the difference between the cream that rises to the top, and goof balls like Rove who we can now toss on the trash heap of history.
John Schuh| 9.19.10 @ 12:57AM
Rove has never been a conservative. Like his boss and like Kay Bailey and Cornyn, he fits right in with the Highland Park people who are just of the left of the old Tory Democrats who used to run Texas. That breed is pretty much extinct, except for a few 90-year olds. Still extant is their conviction that
they are the rightful class in these-here parts. Too far right to be acceptable to the Coastal gentry, they can still fool a lot of Texans.

There are people who make a living licking the boots of the wealthy and powerful. Mr. Rove chose the boots of the Bush family and must thereby attack any one who may be a threat to the wealth they get from political power, now or possibly in the future. (Why the Bush family even needed Lon Chaney (Man of 1000 faces!) to run cover for them as Vice President-He thought he could fool us using the name Tom Cheney but we know better!)
It happens in both parties. There are bootlickers of the left and bootlickers of the right. Both work for families whose gene pools are getting weaker and who fear losing their money and power.
But, in the end, human nature and history win out.

My g-d I could believe the venom from the mouth of Karl Rove -- But now that I have had time to step back I say--He and his ilk must decide very very soon -like now--what their objective is. If it is tp put people down and in their place because of disagreements about who is the best candidate--my naswer is--the voters decided. But if their motive is to harm candidates in any way--to get in their way of winning--then I say to Karl and his ilk--get lost.
Rose Douglas| 9.19.10 @ 11:34AM
What Carl Rove and others in the beltway don't get is that at this moment in history, conservatives would (and should) elect a rock to Congress if it would be a definite vote against the current liberal madness going on.
K Lewis | 9.19.10 @ 12:24PM
Some really great comments. I'd like to add - 1) I too really loved GWB, but too late realized that what I mistook for fiscal conservatism was purely only social conservatism. 2) I have watched and listened to Rove's commentary primarily on Fox and thought that he understood. However, as all have said - he is the "old school", the "Old guard", etc. Until we get the RINOs out of the Republican guard - it will be difficult change. BUT there will be change - the people are waking up and speaking. The people of Delaware proved that. It's time for the Repubs to get on board as true conservatives or die the quick, fast death of those who have become power-hungry and the same as the Dems.

It's clear in January 2011 the Conservatives in Congress will be fighting both the Dems and the Rino's for control of the Agenda. Throw in BHO and it's going to be a three prong encirclement attack of old.
Conservatives in Congress need to toughen their hides and sharpen their tools now. It's going to be bloody. Don't expect to be popular--except with those who brought you to power. I suggest that we ignore lame duck Barry's agenda and substitute our own.
Overturn Obama care = reform without Government control---50 state competition, tort reform, Medical HSA's put consumers in charge
Energy independence = National Security. (plus it means 10's of thousands of good paying jobs in America as we develop our own resources.)
Lower Corp. tax rates = MORE jobs here--fewer sent overseas.
Cut government spending ASAP. Start with 15% across the board spending cuts in every Federal Department and go line by line through the budget.
By 2011 we will be $14,000 billion dollars in debt. We must make Americans understand that the country is bankrupt. Everyone must make sacrifices to turn the country back to sanity.

I keep getting emails from my Republican friends urging me to buy a ticket to some Rove event. Yeah, Rove is a genius. He got Bush elected.
But while he and Bush were having a reading contest, Rove stood by and let President Bush remain above it all while the entire party got our skulls knocked in. It wasn't just Bush who payed the price, dear Rove. We all did.
If you will notice on a nationwide level from the feds down to the locals, the rule for the primary process is this: If you are a moderate Republican and manage to defeat a conservative for the primary nod, you assume and in fact do receive the majority support of the losing conservative faction.
However, if you are a conservative who defeats a moderate in a GOP primary, RARELY do you receive the enthusiastic support of the moderates. In fact, you may find the moderate joining up with the Democrat, sitting it out, or heck, as we have seen with several candidates, even choosing to run as a Dem or an Independent.

The end of an oligarchy, thought it be lingering, is always ugly. The Republican elites are losing, and, trying desperately to hold on to power, do not realize that if they "win" by defeating candidates chosen by The People, they lose even more.
Maybe they'll have Specter-like epiphanies and become D's. Or follow Murky into "Independent"-hood. Condemning the kooks and loons that are actually the moral majority (which is both) the whole way.
The oligarchy is long-overdue for extinction. RIP, and don't come back. Maybe you boys can start writing novels to make your daily bread.

I always thought that he was a conniving weasel when he led the Bush movement and this just confirms it. He's typical of the "good old boy, regardless of the political label" mindset that permeates all levels of politics today. Screw him.

This isn't a question of establishment Republicans vs Tea Party Republicans; it's about reversing liberal tyranny. Karl Rove has done O'Donnell a favor. He was smart to bring up O'Donnell's past issues - one that she needs to address ASAP. She's got 6 weeks to convince Delaware voters that she has matured and is capable for the job. Her Dem opponent and cronies will hit her HARD. Rove's advice for her to address these things, in as sympathetic a way as possible, WILL enable her to address the broader issues of Obama's destructive policies.
Rove was on Fox News Sunday (with Chris Wallace) and was asked again about O'Donnell. He also STRONGLY denounced Murkowski. Video: http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/.....t_id=86913

Karl Rove was criticizing Christine O'Donnell because he knows she can't win in Delaware.
And if you look up the results this "architect" wrought in 2000 against an utter stiff named Al Gore and in 2004 against an even bigger stiff named John Kerry, you'll know that Karl Rove really knows how not to win Delaware.
He's a bloody expert on the subject. Schmuck.
Ann Coulter said it best. (Doesn't she always?) If it wasn't for some brave, unfunded, truth-telling patriots called the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004, Rove would have managed to lose that presidential election, too.

Nick you asked why the resources of the Republican parties organizations always back the Rhino's when they know they are not going to be conducive to the Parties agenda. Simple. These entrenched Republicans regardless of what they say or convey to the pubic, are the same people who belong to groups who believe in the One World Order concept and really back the agenda that will give them inside power. People like Rove have opened my eyes. Rove couldn't stand that his reputation had been impugned. I will never forgive him for the vicious attack he gave O'Donnell when she won the primary in Delaware. No Democrat listed the detrimental background statistics that most of the pubic was even unaware of until his spill on national television. Disgusting and uncalled for. I would never vote for anyone who belongs to the Council on Foreign Relations as they are all One Worlders too and that includes Newt , Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, Guiliani, and McCain. The Bushes one and two were One World Order believers and look where it got them. This is why the public believes the elitists are nothing but power hungry from either party and why we want average, Americans who are not tainted by the Washington Beltway mentality which I say over and over again. Just give me good old common sense which seems to be lacking with these power brokers seeking more and more power and control of our lives!

Karl Rove and Lisa Murkowski have a lot in common. They are both lashing out as they realize they are losing power. That is what all of this is about: power. It was never about principles.
