Iran’s American Hostages

The Iranian government has released Sarah Shourd, one of three American hikers who have been detained for more than a year, after receiving a half-million dollars in “bail” — really a ransom. It’s not clear who paid it.

The White House notes in an official statement that “Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal remain prisoners in Iran who have committed no crime.” The statement goes on:

We remain hopeful that Iran will demonstrate renewed compassion by ensuring the return of Shane, Josh and all the other missing or detained Americans in Iran.

Because that’s what we’ve come to expect from the Islamic Republic — compassion.

what are these dumb ones doing hiking around the middle east ? have they not heard it is not safe? they really deserve what they get. Totally stupid with NO common sense.

Of course we're all for Americans being released by the Iranians, but if these hikers weren't working for the CIA, they should be kept away from sharp objects and fire.

Yeah somehow lower Kurdistan hasn't made my top-100 hiking destinations yet.

On a related note WTH is up with that video of these dweebs that gets played every time their story comes on the news? The one with them all walking out of the bamboo and dancing like morons? Ugh rot in Iranian jail for making that video alone.

I don't understand. Why is Iran doing this? These were at worst undocumented immigrants crossing the border for a better life in the paradise of Islamic theocracy. America is much more compassionate; we nod and wink at undocumented immigrants who enter by the thousands, and in Reid's latest insertion in a DEFENSE BILL, offer a path to citizenship for those undocumented immigrants who among other things join the armed services (break the law, we'll give you a gun and salary, and entrust our nation's defense to you). Can these three really hurt Iran? Is this all Iran has - hold three hikers hostage. How impotent. And what morons go hiking along the border of a country run by nutjobs looking for leverage? The entire story is a waste of time: Iran is pathetic, the hikers are stupid, and it all shows how idiotic is America's immigration and border policies. NEXT.

ralph the mouth....

i'm so sure these granola lovin kids were playing james bond when they tripped over a rock into iran. they probably had really cool watches that could detect the underground uranium enrichment facilities that iran most definitely would locate next to the border of another country, in the middle of faacking nowhere! i'm sure the ayatollah's minions have learned a lot from the techonoloy we deployed in those watches.....

mouth, you are a moron. just like they were for even venturing close to the iranian border. but for the life of me i cannot understand how you equate this with america's immigration policy?

america doesn't hold illegal border hikers at gunpoint in our prisons...unless they murder, rape, or steal. and if they do we usually give them bath and a good meal and deport them (sometimes).

you are a hater...assuming you're american and live in this country....you can please leave.

scott| 9.17.10 @ 12:51AM

and btw...they WERE a bunch of fools. i could think of better rocks to climb over than those next to the iranian border.

but btw....why isn't our government putting more pressure on iran to release them? hmmm...if they were being held "prisoner" by russia or china would you hear more about it? what's different about this and the 79 "hostage" crisis?

funny...if you google "american iranian hostages" you only get results about 79. if you google "american iranian prisoners" they show up..

sad...we should go get them and tell maaaaahhhmoood amhadabadinijab and his cleric handlers to go faack themselves

I heard the North Korean border is a great hiking place. Maybe she could go there next month.

Sheila| 9.15.10 @ 12:03PM

Ah yes, of course U.S. foreign policy should be held hostage by "give peace a chance" twits hiking on the Iraq/Iran border. Go ahead and have "compassion" for idiots on your own dime and time, Tabin/Toobin.

donald| 9.15.10 @ 6:37PM

What if the jailers in Iran were reading these posts, and forwarding the "general" opinion based on these comments to an authority that is ultimately in charge of the American prisoners' fate? I mean, they now have to prove that they weren't "up" to anything, aside from the mountain they were hiking upon.

Anne| 9.16.10 @ 3:50PM

uhh, what were they doing hiking in IRAN!!! Adirondacks not good enough, Nepal even!! These "hikers" were idiots to go there in the first place. What did they expect? To be treated with hospitality?
