The Politico has optained
a draft letter in which a number of House Democrats from
conservative-leaning districts seek to pressure Speaker Pelosi into
supporting an extension of all of the Bush tax cuts. According to
the article, “Reps. Jim Matheson (Utah), Glenn Nye (Virginia),
Melissa Bean (Ill.) and Gary Peters (Mich.) drafted the letter and
are working to gather support, mostly from the moderate Blue Dog
and New Democrat coalitions…”
The letter is indicative of a broader effort by endangered
Democrats to distance themselves from party leadership in the
run-up to the November elections.

Yet Geithner and the other Democrats are claiming victory because of Boehner's remarks yesterday. Boehner appeared to say that Republicans would cave in and agree to Obama's tax increases.

I think the operative idea here is distancing themselves from the party higher-ups prior to the election. Once November 2 is safely in the rear-view mirror, you can count on the "conservative democrats" (kind of like man-friendly lesbians) to once more toe the party line for pork and committee chairs.
