Well.
The Daily Caller
tells us that “labor leaders, liberal religious leaders and the
NAACP” have called a rally on the Mall in Washington as a response
to the Glenn Beck and Tea Party rally.
The rally is scheduled for October 2.
First reaction?
This is political, and don’t believe for a second the
religious business. To the extent there will be “religious leaders”
involved it will be the same old, same old. Left-wing types like
Jim Wallis who in fact have no mass following to speak of because
in fact they have repeatedly presented themselves as politicians
and not clergy.
Beck had somewhere in the neighborhood of 500,000 people
at his rally. A crowd of solid Americans who were, by
all accounts, acting like they were at a church picnic. Wow. Now
there’s radical!
What will happen in October? If
five people show up, the crowd will be said to
have quadrupled Beck’s. And the mainstream media will
call it a victory for Obama and the left.
Anything else we need to know?

SEIU, AFSCME, NEA, AFT, and doubtless a memo from Arne Duncan "suggesting" DoEd employees attend. What made the Beck rally impressive ( and I'm not a huge Beck fan, FWIW) was that the crowd of ordinary Americans was exactly that. Ordinary, non-regimented, non- organized. In a word: authentic.
If union bosses and the professional race hustlers at the NAACP get a larger number, what would that prove? Kim Jong Il always seems to manage a decent turnout as well.
CJN Guy| 9.1.10 @ 4:12PM
They probably had to schedule the rally on October 2 because it will take them that long to coordinate the spontaneous "grassroots" movement that will blossom unexpectedly (and much to the delight of the MSM).
Pete| 9.1.10 @ 4:15PM
And yet they couldn't schedule it that much later or they would risk stocking out of cigarettes and dope to bribe people to vote in the Nov elections.
Greg| 9.14.10 @ 6:39PM
A totally nonsensical statement. Any encores?
Flee| 9.1.10 @ 4:20PM
Can someone please tell me who the corporate backers of the Tea Party movement are? It doesn't seem like I have seen any corporate influences at these rallies and they support candidates. Not much benefit for corporations unless you think less government is better for business. Ah I guess the left figures there must be companies pulling the strings if a group wants less government just like the unions pull the strings to promote more government. It's all clear to me now.
largebill | 9.1.10 @ 4:30PM
Our church group (KofC) has a golf outing to raise money for charity that day so we are doing our part to keep their attendance low. :-)
In all seriousness, this rally should not be compared to Beck's solely on the basis of number of people in the area. More importantly is the question of whether they will attempt to equal his group in the quality of presentation and ability to keep it non-political?
Pete| 9.1.10 @ 4:38PM
That's a good point about location. Someone with access to better stats than I have should look up how many government dependents are in the District. They will have to walk the line between gaudy numbers and riots.
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 4:49PM
Same old Pete--you always make me laugh!
Texas Mom| 9.2.10 @ 8:49AM
We should compare the photos of the sight after this rally to the Obama inauguration and Glenn Beck's rally to award the cleanest, most enviromentally friendly event! Bet Beck's rally wins!
Greg| 9.14.10 @ 6:50PM
Well, someone should advise Beck that he not make such a comparison, since he's talked about the numbers he attracted ceaselessly. Quality of presentation? What makes you an expert on such a thing? Non-political? What parallel universe do you exist in? The motive was entirely political, i.e., endorsed by Tea Partiers, featured such a right wing political aspirant like Sarah Palin, and was held in D.C. ! Its true purpose was obscured by religious claptrap and meaningless "restoring honor" symbolism.
NavyBrat | 9.1.10 @ 4:31PM
Well, you know what they say. "Immitation is the most sincere form of flattery."
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 4:40PM
Democrat astroturf rally.
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 4:46PM
Bet the Mall is a garbage dump after their rally is over.
Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 9.1.10 @ 7:57PM
SoCon: That's the first thing I thought too. This rally is definitely "not" going to attract the same "type" as the Tea Party's law-abiding, God fearing, Country loving, Tax paying, hardworking, who actually look for a trash can to throw out their garbage when they have too "type". Just sayin'!! At least the D.C. Garbagemen might actually make some overtime with this crafty crowd, unlike the annoyingly sweet Tea Party's (I can say that about the Tea Party, because I'm one of them, although, I'm really not that sweet)!!
Nick| 9.1.10 @ 8:01PM
SoCon,
No bet from me!
I was at the Gathering of Eagles rally in 2oo7. We far outnumbered the smelly, hippie hoard and the little area that they occupied, across from the Lincoln Memorial, looked like Mogadishu when they oozed away.
I have pictures of the park trash collectors picking up all the recycleable paper the tree-hugging peaceniks left behind. So much for protecting the enviroment for these trust fund babies.
That was my first rally, and man was it fun. We kept the smelly, hippie hoards from cutting through the north side of the Lincoln Memorial to get to their puny area. Boy, were they ticked!
We really didn't have a right to stop them, but we did any way. Ha-ha!
And, they were scared too. Everytime they saw one of us in our uniform, or with an American flag, they would walk in a different direction and avoid eye contact.
To all the Viet Nam veterans out there: "Welcome Home!"
God Bless America!
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 10:28PM
Two more of my AmSpec faves--LLL and Nick! How are you? Hope each of you have had a great summer.
Sorry, LLL, you're a sweet thing to me, so is that doll from Detroit. :)
Sorry if I've embarrassed you!
Nick| 9.1.10 @ 11:46PM
Hi SoCon!
My summer has been hot, but good. Hope all is well with you and your family.
And, no, I don't embarrass easily. Thanks for the compliment.
If I may reciprocate, you are so sweet, that "Sweet Sixteen" parties are now called "SoCon Sixteen" parties! (ha-ha)
God Bless!
SoCon| 9.2.10 @ 12:26AM
Hey thanks! That was so nice.
Someone's been watching Red Eye!
I still find it hard to believe that "Mr. irreverent" Greg Gutfeld was an altar boy when he was little!
Nick| 9.2.10 @ 9:28AM
SoCon,
Your welcome!
Yes, I catch Red Eye now and then, thanks to insomnia. I didn't know that about Greg, though. I agree, it's hard to believe.
Raving Rabbi| 9.1.10 @ 4:50PM
Oh, Lord! Oh, Jeffrey!
The buses from Vegas will be there, filled with SEIU members that voted for Obama, but are now out of work because Obama made it verboten for large corporations with high corporate salaries to convention there. Other buses will come from Michigan filled with UAW people, who have no work because they priced themselves out of the car market, helping Toyota & Honda catch up to GM. Louisiana will send buses of ACORN people who are out of work because their contemporaries were willing to help set up El Salvadoran underage prostitution rings. New York will send buses of ex-N.Y. Times workers who are out of jobs because people don't choose to read their slant on the news anymore. California will send buses of NEA members who are out of work because their illegal students' parents don't pay state taxes, and the state is on the verge of fiscal collapse...
In other words, it will be an accurate cross-section of Real True-Blue Americans, who fortunately now have enough time to export their excellent agenda to the rest of our great country!
dad29| 9.1.10 @ 5:45PM
Well, if Wm Sloane Coffin doesn't show up, he'll certainly VOTE (D) in Chicago.
matthew s harrison| 9.1.10 @ 6:17PM
They may want to have some kind of cause, other than begging the federal government for handouts before they converge on the mall.
Just having a "rally" with no direction, and nothing to stand for, is just all getting together to complain about conservatives-that will finish them off once and for all-and I can't wait to watch it unfold!
Furthermore-a bunch of people who don't work, can't travel a thousand or more miles, with no money, though it has been proven in the past that the unions will spend their membership's dues on frivolous things like this-so there may be a few thousand-but that will be the limit.
Look for CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC to estimate the numbers in the millions, even though, they will barely cover the steps at the LM! Too funny!
Alan Brooks| 9.1.10 @ 6:41PM
"and I'm not a huge Beck fan, FWIW"
Why? merely because he possesses a titanic ego?
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 6:46PM
You'd have a pretty good opinion of yourself, too, Brooks, if you gave a party and a million people showed up.
Don't be petty now.
Nick| 9.1.10 @ 7:34PM
The democrat party could easily beat Mr. Beck's rally totals. All they would have to do is park a bunch of buses on the border and pick up all the illegal aliens coming across!
They would have half a million by Oct. 2, no problem.
Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 9.1.10 @ 8:04PM
Cross the border illegally, come to the rally, and we'll give you welfare, healthcare, and the right to vote in November. There will be at least one million of them on the Mall that day, and a big loss for Conservatives after the elections!!
Nick| 9.1.10 @ 11:48PM
LLL,
We'd better stop this.
We might give Soros and his stooges some bad ideas!
danny| 9.1.10 @ 7:40PM
SoCon, bet you're right about the mess that will be left behind. Would hate to be on cleanup detail in D.C. after they leave. lol as they say.
SC Mike| 9.1.10 @ 8:27PM
Despite my almost neurotic aversion to crowds, I did attend 8/28 and even coped with the 45-minute sardine experience of waiting to get out of the stinking Foggy Bottom-GWU station around 9:00 AM, and I’m glad I did.
I am tempted to show up at the 10/2, all dressed and acting like an a$$hat, but I suspect that I’d just blend in… I might even get elected union steward or something if I wore a “Kill Beck” sweatshirt.
SoCon| 9.1.10 @ 10:36PM
You'd never fit in in with all that riff-raff, SC M--no way, no how.
I wish I could have been there on 8/28, too; what a magnificent day. Maybe there's hope for us yet. I pray it's true.
Yosemeti Sam| 9.1.10 @ 10:53PM
Ha, ha: please, please Pelosi - show up!
xyzzy| 9.2.10 @ 9:36AM
Who knew? Oct 2. There really will be a Tea Bagger rally.
Purple Lips| 9.2.10 @ 10:03AM
Raving Rabbi hit the nail on the head. Between the AFL-CIO, NEA, SEIU, and assorted lunatics, this rally will exceed 500,000. I would not be surprised that the organizers will also throw in free smokes, booze, and hookers to swell the numbers even more. Who knows, perhaps The Boss, and Danny Glover will make an appearance.
This rally I predict will have produce an atmosphere similar to Nuremberg circa 1936. That is, it will be militant, angry, and "in your face". Just want the voters need to see a month before election day.
STan Redmond| 9.2.10 @ 10:15AM
It will fail but of course be counted a massive rally showing politically approved minority attendees that were lacking at Beck's event.
But fail it will like everything else the left does to counter conservative success. Air America. FAILURE! Al Franken, the liberal Rush Limbaugh, FAILURE! The liberal coffee party to counter the Tea party, FAILURE! Al Sharpton's counter to the Beck rally, FAILURE! Conservatives have always been conservative with no hiding it. Liberals are always rebranding and renaming themselves to deceive a new group because people don't like liberal ideas once they are implemented. And who wants to sit around in DC listening to the same tired old group of victims, poverty pimps, race baiting hucksters, abortionists, and angry homosexuals call America a racist sexist horrible place filled with mean conservatives? We just have to listen to an obama [pbuh] speech for that.
Abe| 9.3.10 @ 12:15PM
Why do you call Rush Limbaugh a liberal? He's an ultra conservative as you know.
Bob Miller| 9.2.10 @ 10:24AM
The people at the counter-rally will be unavailable to do their usual mischief somewhere else. This might as good as a snowed-in DC.
Bob Miller| 9.2.10 @ 10:25AM
I meant "might be" (sigh)
robin| 9.6.10 @ 12:05AM
We keep hearing about the stimulus money that hasn't been spent, and people want to know why it has not been used on extended benefits and whatnot, but I think it is being saved to buy votes for this election in Nov. The people at Beck's rally (I was there), spent their own money for rooms, food and transportation. If Sharpton has anybody, they will have to be picked up, put up in a hotel and given vouchers for food, (the colonel should have a good day). If any of them had any sense, they would realize that they are trying to bite the very hand that feeds them.
