The Spectacle Blog

Yesterday, August 24, 2010, this story headlined in Politico:

CBS ties news ratings low

Last week, “CBS Evening News” tied the all-time ratings low set last summer for a network evening news broadcast, TV Newser reports. An average of 4.89 million total viewers tuned into CBS for evening news last week, behind 6.51 million for ABC and 7.42 million for NBC.

On October 16, 2006 — almost four years ago — I noted this about Katie Couric’s takeover of the CBS anchor chair. After seeing her ratings briefly skyrocket with an appearance from Rush Limbaugh in a “free speech” segment, Couric’s ratings were almost immediately headed south. I wrote:

CBS and Ms. Couric’s failure illustrates a point that was easily predictable before Katie even sat down in the anchor chair. Putting Rush Limbaugh on CBS air in a “free speech” segment certainly pumped Couric’s ratings for a moment. But conservatives — Reagan were he here and surely Limbaugh himself — realized exactly what the problem was that lie ahead. CBS tried to demonstrate that they were free of liberal bias by giving ol’ Rush a few seconds of airtime. What they had no intention of doing was eliminating the liberal bias of the show’s writers, producers and reporters, much less of Ms. Couric herself. Result? The new boss is the same as the old boss. The philosophical presentation of the new CBS News hasn’t changed a whit from the days when Dan or Walter or Bill Moyers looked somberly into the lens to insist they were telling the news “the way it was.” Still, there had to be a terrifying “ping” when CBS execs realized that Rush Limbaugh brought higher ratings to CBS News than Dan Rather ever could. Could — would — that ever happen? Would they have the guts to make “America’s anchorman” the CBS anchorman? The people in charge of CBS News would sooner crunch down on a cyanide tablet before naming Rush Limbaugh or any other conservative the anchor and managing editor of their show. Even if it meant winning the ratings for the next century. Fair and balanced is not now or ever in the cards at CBS, and Ms. Couric’s ratings have tumbled accordingly. Besides, why would Rush Limbaugh want a demotion?

It is now 2010. “The Rush Limbaugh Show - featuring Rush as “America’s real anchorman” - cruises along in ratings heaven. Its host not that long ago signed a new contract for a reported $400 million over 8 years. And Couric’s CBS Evening News is in the sad state reported yesterday by Politico.

Will the CBS folks learn anything from this umpteenth lesson in media?

Naaaaaaaaaaaah.

Enough said.

Rush blows them away every day and in every way - that must just grind their stones hee hee hee.

nick c| 8.25.10 @ 4:53PM

Rush couldn't make it on tv with his own show, and again on an NFL program because of his big mouth. How could any legitimate news program (except on FOX) use some one-dimensional blowhard as managing editor, let alone an anchor?

Jon| 8.25.10 @ 7:25PM

Dan Rather lost his job because of HIS big mouth. He is also a one dimensional (pinko) blowhard. What's the difference?

JmsA| 8.25.10 @ 7:50PM

Rush tells the truth. That's the difference.

scotchieguy| 8.25.10 @ 7:37PM

He is obnoxious. He is a blowhard. He is narcissistic as hell. He is terrible on TV. But he is a radio genius, and succeeds in filling that huge void left by the utter failure of network news. Don't believe me? Then why did Al Franken and Air America fail so quickly. By the time they were up and running, it seemed, they were on their knees. BTW, the reason he didn't make it on ESPN, is because these people are as PC as the MSM. Again, the guy is absolutely insufferable, but 90% right. I like him in small bits, but much prefer Dennis Prager, a true gentleman and scholar. Prager is what is right w/ the party (calm, dispassionate, reasonable discourse), whereas, Rush is what is wrong w/ the party (Gotcha! politics, name-calling "femi-nazis," boastful BS "talent on loan from God," and basic inabililty to listen to the other side respectfully, without acting like a spoiled, impetuous 12 year old brat. His message is right on, but he truly lacks any class at all. As a rightie, it is almost embarrassing to admit when he is right. As a narcissist, does he really think people give a damn about his stupid wedding? How vain can vain get?

greghawk| 8.26.10 @ 5:45AM

so you voted for the current administration- correct? Thanks for nothing!

Charles Martel| 8.26.10 @ 1:46PM

Rush himself explained why he gave up on television: hours of show prep for a rigidly constricted 22 minutes with little flexibility and no callers. It just wasn't worth the trouble.

And "talent on loan from God" sounds boastful only to those with a pre-existing animus toward Rush. After all, do we not all of us have talent, whatever that might be and in whatever quantity, on loan from God?

As for the wedding, he did not post photos therefrom until he had received a groundswell of requests from fans, and even then, he was respectful enough of his guests' privacy to exclude candid shots. Or at least, that's what I hear, not having seen any of them myself.

And finally, the "90% right" that you grudgingly award him is itself only 90% right. Yes, they do the math.

Another reason Rushie quit t.v. was because they kept pushing his show later and later into the wee hours of the morn.

Sung to the tune of Underdog:

The Rush Limbaugh Song:
There's no need to fear! Rush Limbaugh is here!

When Liberals in this world appear
And break the things that we hold dear
And frighten all who see or hear
The cry goes up both far and near
For Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh!

Speed of lightning, voice of thunder
Fighting Liberals who rob and plunder
Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh!

When in this world the headlines read
Conservative hearts are filled with greed
And steal from those who are in need
To right this wrong with blinding speed
Goes Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh!

Speed of lightning, roar of thunder
Fighting Liberals who rob and plunder
Rush Limbaugh! Rush Limbaugh!

I for one am always glad to hear that MSM outlets of whatever type do badly. That is great news. Let say this one "rediculous concept. The only way to"modify" ( if there is any chance at all ) the behavior of a MSM entity is simply not buy it.
That means don't spend money on it or don't watch or listen ot it. While there is absolutely no gaurentee that such an entity will ever publicly show that they"got the message" I have no doubt, behind the scenes, they get the message. you have to keep on " not spending"on them.

ggoblue| 8.25.10 @ 10:40AM

so when will the shareholders finally have had enough?

limbaugh would immediately make cbs news number one...by a mile...

scotchieguy| 8.25.10 @ 7:43PM

No he wouldn't. He would absolutely bomb. People simply don't want an obnoxious nut for their news source. He isn't objective. That is his strength. He is an entertainer. That is not what is called for in MSM news.

Charles Martel| 8.26.10 @ 1:51PM

He is also an unabashed editorialist, a role that anchorman of a news desk would not permit him. As I stated in another post higher up the page, it just wouldn't be worth it to him.

Spotlight| 8.25.10 @ 11:24AM

I have avoided any ABC, CBS, NBC nightly news for years, since most every time I watched, it began with a glowing report and photo of 0bama or some other democrat.

Since then, I have used the internet to review online news articles from a variety of sources - domestic and foreign.

If I now happen to turn on an ABC, CBS, NBC news broadcast, I am completely amazed that the content includes virtually nothing that is really current news. They selectively avoid reporting on events that would affect me or the US, and certainly zero about the latest democrat-wrought disasters.

Of course, the MSM has no problem digging up something negative on Republicans or Christians on a regular basis.

Therefore, I stand on the decision to not waste my time on the likes of couric and the other democrat mouthpieces in the MSM. I think they really are a danger to democracy.

Oldefarte| 8.25.10 @ 11:24AM

For an excellent look inside CBS [and Rather] I strongly urge your reading of 'BIAS' by former CBS reporter, Bernard Goldberg. It's a fasinating/informative read!!!!!

PETE66| 8.25.10 @ 12:20PM

You're right Oldfarte....I read his book a few years back and have borrowed it out to several friends to read. I highly reccomend it as well!

scotchieguy| 8.25.10 @ 7:44PM

You mean "loaned it out." heh heh heh

Mart| 8.25.10 @ 11:35AM

but Couric still is the biggest news star in the world. the best interviewer and CBS won't give her up. Her broadcast still is the best among the 3

Eric Cartman| 8.25.10 @ 11:51AM

And you rate these broadcasts, how? I mean, let's say you're walking through a field and you come upon three big piles of cow flop. You say to yourself, Wow! That pile of cow flop over there is the best pile of cow flop of the three giant piles of cow flop in front of me!

How do you make that decision? By which pile of cow flop attracts the most flys? Which smells the least? Which one has more grass sticking out of it? Just wondering.

drybackinpi| 8.25.10 @ 1:05PM

Good analogy Eric, I've often wondered the same thing but never considered 'Cow Flop'. :)

James Lee| 8.26.10 @ 3:02PM

Sorry Cartman to join the discussion so late, but I suppose it is better late than never to input truly insightful dialogue to the debate.

Cartman, I thought it was obvious to all seasoned cow pile watchers, that the aroma wins out every time in determining which is the champion pile. Don't forget that without that aroma, no flies would be attracted and grass only grows after the pile has lost its moisture and aroma and really can't be considered a valid pile any longer.

Thank you. There is no charge to you for my professional cow pile watcher analysis.

It must kill Katie to know that Rush has four times more listeners than she has viewers. And there's no sign of him stopping 20+ years.

Hank Archer| 8.25.10 @ 2:32PM

If one of these three (ABC, CBS or NBC) went conservative on their news programs (mainly I mean the weekday morning show and evening news) they would double their ratings and rocket to number one. Their cable programs would even get a boost.

It would be easy to do - just flip - report the opposite way they currently do - promote Republican ideas/policies and ignore or misrepresent Democrat ones. Maximize coverage of Democrat scandals, ignore Republican ones. Rinse, lather, repeat!

Nate| 8.25.10 @ 3:58PM

Rush Limbaugh is more popular than a news show?

Well...

Rush Limbaugh is entertainment. I bet the WWF gets higher ratings than Couric's news program too.

If the Rolling Stones did a prime time special on ABC, they'd certainly beat Couric's show too.

People like Limbaugh because he entertains them. Children like MacDonald's "happy meals" because they cater to the eating experience children enjoy.

Limbaugh is best compared, in fact, to fast food.

By all means enjoy a few Big Macs in your diet. You only go around once.

But you should also consider more nutritious meals. That would mean -- to carry on the analogy -- news sources where REPORTERS gather information and present it according to the standards of good journalism. Fox does a little of this in the afternoons and evenings. (Indeed, Fox often has more hard news stories than MSNBC when the blowhards are offstage.)

If you don't like Couric because she asked Sarah Palin if she enjoyed reading, that's fine. There are plenty of other excellent sources of food.

And remember, fat asses. Get plenty of exercise!

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 8.25.10 @ 4:28PM

Nate: It just kills you, that "we" (that would be the rest of us) just don't buy into your brand of "so-called" news anymore. We can smell B.S. when we get close to it, and we don't need to taste it to know what it is. Couric lost even more ratings, just like Dan did before her, and they're never coming back to CBS. What's the frequency Kenneth? I don't really know that answer, but it's definitely really low, sparse, meager, and rock bottom!! Even if old Walter came back from the dead today and took back the anchor chair tonight, even old reincarnated formerly dead Walter couldn't bring back the ratings for CBS. It's over Johnny, it's over!!

Oldefarte| 8.25.10 @ 4:40PM

Nate, You know what one gets when they eat most fast food meals? THE SHITS....and that's exactly the same results you get form reading any of your incompetent dribble!!!!!!!!!!!

Margie| 8.25.10 @ 4:58PM

Or, as my Dad used to say, "the Hershey squirts."
Right on, Oldefarte!

Margie| 8.25.10 @ 5:04PM

Nate/aka Liberal Reader,

Katie Couric is the epitome of boring, that's why she's lost. Boring Leftist mundane views of the world and of reality, not to mention lies.

Rush on the other hand is truly entertaining, yes! Because he's got something she doesn't~ character, honor, dignity, truthfulness and a great, fabulous in fact, sense of humor. In fact, you can't get any better the Rush. Others have tried, and failed. Boo-hoo. Poor babies.

Nate| 8.25.10 @ 7:46PM

Margie:

Here is a good test of whether you're reading, listening to, or watching a good news source: at least 70% of it is pretty boring. It's sober, it's rational, it's full of lots of information, and it's not done for laughs.

It's not all boring, but often it is.

As adults in a free country charged with the duty of self-governance we accept the responsibility of informing ourselves about the world. That means eschewing -- sometimes -- the easy, vulgar pleasures of carnival barkers and blowhards and turning to actual news.

Like I said, there's no reason it has to be Couric. She did, it must be admitted, insult and offend the whole of right wing America by asking Sarah Palin if she had any opinions about the Supreme Court.

But if you watch CSPAN and listen to the news sources senators site when making arguments about legislation; if you go back and research which news sources George W. Bush consulted while he was president (he watched Fox News AND read the NY Times every day); if you decide to take it upon yourself to get really informed, even when the information you learn challenges your beliefs about the world, you'll find yourself broadening your horizons just a little.

And no, senators -- not even the ones you like -- do not get their information by listening to Rush, or Beck, and they don't get it reading Sarah Palin's facebook page. (I would bet any senator you name reads the Times and the Post daily. But that's just a guess.)

So get on your exercise pants, fat ass!

Work that thing!

Margie| 8.25.10 @ 11:18PM

Nate/aka Liberal Reader,

Wow. I think you just outdid yourself in condescention and haughtiness this time! Do they have a section for that in the Guiness Book of World Records?

Tsk, tsk, tsk. No, I don't read the New York Slimes. But if I did have a bird I would definately use it for the bird's droppings. Especially when Obama's picture is on the front page. Hey~ what can I say?

Oh, and you say the snews networks aren't done for laughs but but they ARE laughable. Because they all have those same talking points from the WH. They march in lockstep to their Socialist Leader. Ugh! Talk about boring. No, I just turn on the radio for the "news." And read the numerous articles on THE DRUDGE REPORT where the news of the entire world can be found with up to the second reporting. Everyone KNOWS that's the place to go. Do you?

So yes, they are boring people with boring agendas and they just can't keep me. Paying attention, that is. You see, an individual has to at least have their own mind in order to make it interesting to me. And lockstep Leftists just don't do it for me.

But more power to ya, baby! Apparently you will go to your grave sticking up for these losers. Par for the course. That's the way your cookie crumbles. Big woop. You're the one missing out!

Oldefarte| 8.26.10 @ 1:46PM

Nate, You are most probably correct concerning the MSM's BULLEXCREMENT that exists in every newspaper in this country. That is precisely why everyone should cancel their subscriptions to their locally received newspapers and begin obtaining their NON-BULLEXCREMENT news from the numerous alternative new sources available. That is precisely why they are now doing so, as evidenced by the falling advertising and subscription revenues of most newspapers currently [especially the NYT and the WAPO]; and no doubt why both of these LIBERAL PROPAGANDA MACHINES DESGUISED AS NEWS JOURNALS will be/are following the pathway of Newsweek which recently went into bankruptcy and out of business for all intents and purposes [and its editor is anow consulting on MSNBC for a financial living]. Speaking of which your FREAKSHOW NETWORK [MSNBC] is sinking lower and lower in the TV ratings [thanks to Fox] and both it and it slightly above CNN's days are extremely numbered. So, dumbA$S, continue to 'ACT STUPIDLY' by promoting your liberal rags while they last/exist. PS, if you care to educate [which is no doubt impossible] you may go to your library and acquire 'BIAS' by Bernard Goldberg [a CBS news reporter for some twenty years]!!!!!!!!!!!!!

scotchieguy| 8.25.10 @ 7:54PM

Nate, you are exactly right. Rush is an entertainer. He is holier than-thou--an obnoxious ass, but it works. I like his conservative message. But to compare him to Katie, is comparing apples to oranges. Katie represents--badly--the MSM, but then again, she is an entertainer, too--a bimbo, best suited for the morning trash she used to excel w/ Gumble. It doesn't matter who calls the news anymore on the big-3..the reason their ratings are in the toilet is because there are a million other sources for news, not their liberal BS. Same thing w/ the newspapers. They are hurting not because of some liberal BS slant, but because people DONT ADVERTISE WITH THEM ANYMORE. Ever read the want ads? Nothing there, and that is where the paper's made their money.

Nate| 8.25.10 @ 9:27PM

Scotch --

Actually, I think you make some very good points here. Couric may be an OK journalist (I don't know for sure) but she was chosen to anchor for non-journalistic reasons. She's cute, she has a certain personal charm, etc. You're absolutely right that she should not be held up as the gold-standard of broadcast news. (My choice for that these days would be Lehrer's News Hour.)

And no question about it: Rush is absolutely the best in his business. There's never been a radio entertainer like him. I appreciate his immense talent and satirical wit, as well as his skill at performing a radio persona that is very fun to listen to.

However, Rush is NOT a reporter. He does not check facts. He does not confirm information. I've often heard him repeat as news utter nonsense people CALL IN without any corroboration.

Now that's fine for a citizenry with well honed critical thinking skills; it's fine for people who can -- say -- tell the difference between an normative claim and a positive claim. But when people start thinking of him as an "anchorman" of an actual news show, they're doing themselves and this country a disservice.

One final point.

Not all "slant" is BS. Some "biased" reporting can get really, really good results because the reporters are motivated to dig hard for little pay. The trick is find reporters that can govern their passions with their reason -- something Limbaugh does not teach his audience to do.

greghawk| 8.26.10 @ 5:52AM

Nate & Scotch are what's called "bitter clingers" - desperately clutching that 'Hopey Changy' thing they bought in to. Thanks for nothing - chumps!

Deborah D | 8.26.10 @ 8:10AM

"Rush is NOT a reporter. He does not check facts. He does not confirm information. I've often heard him repeat as news utter nonsense people CALL IN without any corroboration."

He doesn't claim to be a reporter -- but he does report the news. The news he wants to report on. He reads articles and op-ed pieces -- at least portions of them and comments on them. He uses Democrats' own words both in print and on television to tweak them, and he does it with good humor. (Liberals don't have a sense of humor).

He always checks his facts. He's more knowledgeable on more subjects than you could even dream of being. He reads more sources and gathers more information than the entire staff of any of the network news organizations -- mainly because he gathers news from both sides of the political spectrum. He doesn't just limit himself to the good news (or good spin) from the Left and the bad news (or bad spin) from the Right as your so-called "news" networks do.

I've never heard him repeat "utter nonsense" of callers as news. And neither have you. He speaks to all of his callers with respect and interest, and then argues with them if appropriate or gives his opinion of what they've said. It is a talk show, you know. I'm sure your definition of "utter nonsense" is anything to the right of Bill Ayers.

You go ahead and continue in your opinion of what "news" is. Rush runs rings around all of them.

Oldefarte| 8.26.10 @ 1:51PM

Limbaugh is certainly not the JOURNALIST["....However, Rush is NOT a reporter. He does not check facts. He does not confirm information. I've often heard him repeat as news utter nonsense people CALL IN without any corroboration...."].......THAT DAN RATHER TOLD EVERYONE THAT HE WAS [once again read 'Bias']!!!!!!!!

Jack Bauer| 8.26.10 @ 1:06PM

"Limbaugh is best compared, in fact, to fast food."

Well no actually. It's Couric and the Network News who are the "fast food" comparison.

22 minutes a day in which to condense the "news" they choose. Plus added spin on top. THAT'S homogenized Big Mac with fries.

Libbaugh has a three hour show, five days a week.

His is is fine cuisine meal.

How can you be so dense. Because you're insanely prejudiced, closed-minded. and shut down to any ideas which disturb your settled mind. that's why.

I'm a 6o-something vet and a conservative. I like Rush (even if he is a bit self adsorbed) but I believe Katie is a narcissistic moron! You seem to like call folks fat asses? OK well I can run 10 miles in less than 90 minutes -- want to take me on in a cross country run? I'll even give you a head start because I think you are a 30-something big mouth (you are either a fitness freak or a FAT ASS?) What say you peaches?

Cpm| 8.25.10 @ 10:58PM

Love or hate Rush all you want but he was the lone voice in the wilderness to call out Obama when everybody else was falling all over themselves talking about accommodation with O's agenda. He stood alone in opposition when the likes of 'scotchieguy' were all embarrassed because Rush had the nerve to come out publicly hoping Obama would fail. He stiffened the congressional Republican's spines against cooperating with Obama's assaults on the American way of life, and inspired countless disenfranchised citizens to exercise their grassroots power in the Tea Party movement and elsewhere. He signaled it was OK to challenge the Obama juggernaut . I find that highly entertaining.

American Girl | 8.26.10 @ 2:20AM

Okay, mostly I agree with Rush but not always. I fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Stay out of my home and bedroom and those of us who contribute to the tax roles should not be punished for the losers and dead beats of the country, and you know who you are.

caveman | 8.26.10 @ 2:31AM

I only hope and pray at some point we will have a moderate (who really cares what their PARTY is?) who is smart and caring to take care of our very young country. Tell us again why the "achievers" pay all the taxes and the "dead beats" (oh my I slipped and fell and I will never work again at age 27) get to live off our tax dollars? My Grandfather is rolling over in his grave.

Charles Martel| 8.26.10 @ 1:56PM

I had no idea that Rush was paid so little.

A dimwit like Katie has not aged gracefully. It's time to bring in a Norah O'Donnell or a Contessa Brewer: They are, afterall, just as dumb as Katie but are much better eye candy and can provide "service" to the line producer on a dime.
