Ron Paul has issued a
strong statement condemning the critics of the New York City
mosque project. Pat Buchanan has written two columns
taking the opposite point of view.
This is not a question of “Can they build a mosque near Ground
Zero?”
It is an question of “Should they build a mosque in the shadow
of the twin towers, where 3,000 Americans were suffocated, crushed
or burned to death by Islamic fanatics whose Muslim faith was
integral to their mission of mass murder and to their
identify?”
Unless one is without kidney, spleen, heart or common sense, the
answer would be “No!”
I’m with Pat.
Margie| 8.23.10 @ 2:43PM
Some of what he said:
“In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.
“They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. A select quote from soldiers from in Afghanistan and Iraq expressing concern over the mosque is pure propaganda and an affront to their bravery and sacrifice.
“The claim is that we are in the Middle East to protect our liberties is misleading. To continue this charade, millions of Muslims are indicted and we are obligated to rescue them from their religious and political leaders. And, we’re supposed to believe that abusing our liberties here at home and pursuing unconstitutional wars overseas will solve our problems.
“The nineteen suicide bombers didn’t come from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iran. Fifteen came from our ally Saudi Arabia, a country that harbors strong American resentment, yet we invade and occupy Iraq where no al Qaeda existed prior to 9/11.
“Many fellow conservatives say they understand the property rights and 1st Amendment issues and don’t want a legal ban on building the mosque. They just want everybody to be “sensitive” and force, through public pressure, cancellation of the mosque construction.
“This sentiment seems to confirm that Islam itself is to be made the issue, and radical religious Islamic views were the only reasons for 9/11. If it became known that 9/11 resulted in part from a desire to retaliate against what many Muslims saw as American aggression and occupation, the need to demonize Islam would be difficult if not impossible.
“There is no doubt that a small portion of radical, angry Islamists do want to kill us but the question remains, what exactly motivates this hatred?
“If Islam is further discredited by making the building of the mosque the issue, then the false justification for our wars in the Middle East will continue to be acceptable.
“The justification to ban the mosque is no more rational than banning a soccer field in the same place because all the suicide bombers loved to play soccer."
Sounds just like Toddard and ilk, eh?
Where are all the defenders of this creep?
Like I said, as soon as his perverted views come out into the open, people will run the other way. He got elected once, but lotsa luck in the future!
Sean| 8.23.10 @ 4:27PM
Margie,
Ron Paul has been elected multiple times. He is the champion of limited government and the Constitution. He was the only Republican Presidential candidate that was right about the economy. That include Nitwit Romney. Cowards like you are the reason we have a nanny state right now.
Warrior | 8.23.10 @ 4:41PM
It is disingenuous and a liberal tactic to post only the portions of his statement that you thought were perverted. In its entirety, Mr. Paul's statement has a much deeper theme. Of course, you like the rest of the neo-cons can't accept an opinion that doesn't walk lock step with yours which really makes yours the perverted view.

Cordoba has the legal right to build it. Critics have the 1st amendment right to criticize Cordoba for building it, short of defamation. Ron Paul has the right to make a silly interpretation of the whole situation.

ds80,
Thanks. As you know it's hard to tell the spirit in which a person says something here, when not in person. I deeply appreciate your support.
R. Paul has been off the deep end for years. He just couldn't help himself this time. He can't contain his insanity. It's sad. And it's sad that he takes so many along with him in it. But birds of a feather flock together.
Instead of being disgusted by where he's at, some embrace him. The underlying problem is anti-semitism and it infects his entire psyche. It utterly disqualifies him as any kind of reasonable leader IMHO.

Margie,
You are angry, paranoid, misguided, easily manipulated, uneducated, most of all ignorant of a lot of things. So you are the typical American I need to ask. With all your rants about Ron Paul, please explain in detail of him being “in the deep end for years”, being Anti-American and every thing else you’ve been throwing at him.
Bet Rily| 8.24.10 @ 7:23PM
Ron Paul is a friend of the terrorists? Please back this up with examples because according to my calculations this is way off base. I doubt that you will prevail in trying to do so. Al-Quaeda attacked the United States of America and Bin Laden explained why: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY. Do you, Margie, believe that our foreign policy best serves the interest of the American people? Do you believe that sanctions that lead to the deaths of 500 thousand Iraqi children is acceptable or that no one would notice? Have you heard of Michael Scheuer (Ex CIA-Bin Laden Task Force)? I suggest you go to his website and read up on WHY the United States is a terrorist target. It has absolutely nothing to do with our freedom...and Bin Laden has stated this. It has to do with our government meddling in the affairs of nations. Period.
Ron Paul is America's true Statesman. No one will agree with everyone all of the time; however, his Constitutional stances are right on and he is brilliant in terms of civil liberties, foreign policy and economics.
I am a relenting supporter of Ron Paul. This doesn't necessarily mean that we are of the same kind in terms of personal ideology; however, with regard to personal freedom, states rights, sound money, economic freedom and a non-interventionist foreign policy I stand by his side.
BTW: I met Ron Paul at his office in Washington. I believe that you would have a different opinion of him if you were to be in his presence for just one moment. He is not arrogant--but compassionate. He is soft spoken and affable. He is genuine--not fake. He doesn't pay lip service to his beliefs--but rather follows through with his voting record. As an American--you should be grateful for such a Representative.
Tim*| 8.23.10 @ 7:08PM
Interesting .
The Rest Of Texas Republican Congressman Dr.Ron Paul's Statement:
"Is the controversy over building a mosque near ground zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery?
It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.”
The debate should have provided the conservative defenders of property rights with a perfect example of how the right to own property also protects the 1st Amendment rights of assembly and religion by supporting the building of the mosque.
Instead, we hear lip service given to the property rights position while demanding that the need to be “sensitive” requires an all-out assault on the building of a mosque, several blocks from “ground zero.”
Just think of what might (not) have happened if the whole issue had been ignored and the national debate stuck with war, peace, and prosperity. There certainly would have been a lot less emotionalism on both sides. The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate, raises the question of just why and driven by whom?"

Ron Paul:
“The House Speaker is now treading on a slippery slope by demanding a Congressional investigation to find out just who is funding the mosque—a bold rejection of property rights, 1st Amendment rights, and the Rule of Law—in order to look tough against Islam."
The House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doing NO such thing.
She would never investigate those who wish to either build a mosque or bring sharia law to the United States.
Here is what Speaker Pelosi actually said:
"“There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded,” she said. “How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City.”
She is looking to look into who is opposed to the mosque, not the mosque itself.
She is not against the mosque, only those opposed to it.

He has not deceived any voters. He has always been a Libertarian. Neocons are why the Republican party has lost the last two elections and are finding ways to lose this year. You want to talk about deception. Let's take the Republicans who support wars without a formal declaration or the funding to execute them properly, support of SCHIP, Medicare D, Patriot Act, etc. Ron Paul does not believe Islam is to blame to 9/11. He has frequently stated that Al Queda was to blame. If you read his whole quote, he was speaking to the misdirection and demogoguery of the issue. While I don't agree with Ron Paul, or any politician 100% of the time, he is a patriot and a Constitutionalist. The neocon demonization of him is astounding. He is being called an anti-semite, bigot, terrorist supporter which is beyond the pale. As long as the neocons hijack the discussion, the liberals will keep winning.
Margie| 8.24.10 @ 11:08AM
Ron Paul is the true definition of RINO.
He's a Lefty Libertarian in Republican's clothing.
His own words reveal it. What is a Lefty Libertarian?
David Horowitz explains:
“The left’s “original sin” is utopianism… It is the left’s utopianism that has produced its “anti-Western predispositions”… the belief in an alternate world to replace the one into which he has been born.
Those identifying themselves as Constitutional Republicans, as did Medina, dream of a profoundly transformed America. In this “Constitutional Utopia,” free from the “military-industrial complex,” America would no longer be controlled by greedy corporations and global bankers who plunder the world. Freedom fighters everywhere “would no longer be terrorists since America wouldn’t be an occupier.” We would withdraw to pristine isolationism, a Daniel Boone wilderness with virtually no government involvement in our lives. Of course, initial massive government regulation would be needed to bring about the country’s liberation from the Big Corporations now enslaving us. Once the people are free from the Military-Industrial neo-cons, power would be returned to the small businesses and individuals.
Nihilism is the second element of the Leftist mind-set, it is the bitter hatred for any manifestation of American world intervention. Withdrawal of American military influence is a common theme for the Drs. Paul and sympathizers.
Horowitz points out:
“Today the Left is still divided over its plans for the future, but these plans pale into insignificance in the face of its real passion which is its nihilistic antagonism towards the United States the metropolis at the center of the global capitalist system, and Israel, its imperialist pawn in the Muslim world. The left’s overweening hatred of global capitalism – “globalization” – which is its energizing force, explains how it can make alliances with Islamic fundamentalists who share the same enemy.”
“In the section of Unholy Alliance called The Mind of the Left, I show how this psychological trope distorts and energizes the vision of leftists across the political spectrum…I explain how the left’s religious need for a social redemption overcomes such differences and forges the coalition which includes…Islamofascists as well. This coalition is most obvious and visible in the global crusade of Islamist fundamentalists and secular leftists to produce a second Holocaust of the Jews in the Middle East.”
Mr. Horowitz set out to explain why disparate Leftists put aside conflicting political agendas to unite against the War in Iraq. He could easily extend the boundaries to include those following the Ron Paul Revolution. Dr. Rand Paul spoke of forming a coalition with the Left to “defeat the Military-Industrial Complex,” a move that would eliminate America’s presence in the Middle-East, contributing as effectively as the Left to the Holocaust of which Mr. Horowitz wrote."

The community can demand the zoning board veto this mosque, and they can do it for any reason they want, including hating muslims. And there ain't a damn thing RuPaul can do about it from Texas.

The problem is, the word "should" as in "Should they build ... ?" leaves the choice up to them. And by applying to do this, they have given their answer.

Congress should pass a law that prohibits anyone from building a mosque anywhere it could possibly offend someone or might be interpreted as a "victory dance" over prior terrorist attacts. Supreme Court will find a reason not to strike it down (remember eminent domain?) We're not really talking about OUR freedom, just THEIRS.
