The Spectacle Blog

Kirsten Powers has gone from being a thoughtful center-leftist to a shrill smear-meister (or is that smear-mistress?). A few weeks ago, Megyn Kelly smacked her down — smacked her down hard and well — when Powers dared to go on Fox to discuss the New Black Panther voter intimidation case without more than a cursory knowledge of the issue. Powers, beaten, pulled out the race card, accusing Kelly of hyping the idea of “scary black men” for ratings, or something like that.

Now she has gone farther. Now she is accusing the entire Republican Party (or is it the entire political right?) with ginning up racism. Methinks she has a hangup with scary white men.

For the record: I have now written nearly 40 editorials, columns and blog posts on the Panther situation AND the issues growing from it. It is incontrovertible that in terms of old-fashioned print, I have done more than any single person to highlight the issue. (Many others who I have named here have written ground-breaking stuff on this subject, repeatedly, online and in some print outlets, chief among them Jennifer Rubin, Hans von Spakovsky and Michelle Malkin, some of which were far better than my own pieces.) So, as a prime mover of the issue, I take charges of racism very personally even if she doesn’t know I exist (which she probably doesn’t). So, then, herewith a statement and a challenge:

Statement: The focus on the Panther case by the right stems from ZERO racist motivations. None. Indeed, it is a response to a racialist application of the law, on a topic we, or at least I, personally wish had never arisen and that I believe this nation should long ago have moved beyond.

Challenge: I will put my record of time, energy, effectiveness, sweat, and almost blood, on behalf of civil rights and the political causes of black Americans, up against that of Ms. Powers — any day, any time, anywhere. I’ve detailed my record on this front several times in this space. I urge her to do some research before she takes the challenge.

Meanwhile, before she slings charges of racism around like confetti at a Yankees’ World Series championship parade, Ms. Powers might want to swallow her bile, rein in her impulses toward cheap shots, and …. stifle herself.

If conservatives are bringing up race, it's only to shed the light that the left has been using it too long as an excuse to cover up bad policy.

Let's drive Ms. Powers (it is Ms., isn't it, Powers? We thought so) down to 12th Street and W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit one Friday night and invite her to get out of the car and walk around for an hour. Let's see if she gets out of the car. Probably won't due to all the scary white guys there.

You'd be much safer wearing a turban with a shirt that said "kill all the infidels" at ground zero.

Eric Cartman| 8.23.10 @ 12:14PM

LOL! Good point - let's give her the choice between the two.

You win the most immature right wing wacko award Cartman.
Like picking on women? Wonder if the authorities have swabbed your DNA, you sound like a serial rapist or killer ,in my humble opinion, of course.

Eric Cartman| 8.23.10 @ 12:51PM

Uh oh. W. L. Ahole has whipped out Emerson to prove his Liberal Ahole credentials. And he seeks to shame me by pointing out his disgust with a common internet abbreviation, of course this right after he awards me a make believe award he dreamed up while masturbating to his Keith Olbermann screen saver and describing a police procedure he seems very familiar with. All this while protecting poor Kirsten Powers from us meanies! What's next, a Nazi epitaph? Will he call me a racist? I can't wait! Please W. L. ! Stop with your rapier like wit!

I am on the edge of my seat. Will Wile E. use a thesaurus or a french-english dictionary in crafting his reply?

Eric: I never saw that you-tube video before? You really can miss a lot when you keep going to Iraq every other year. But that's really a guy? Gee-whiz!! Get a life fag!!

Now this is completely off topic, but I just stumbled upon this website, and its sense of humor, is right up your alley. If you ever wondered where you could find a T-shirt that said, "Obama is the reason why I drink", this is your site. Check it out!! http://thepeoplescube.com/

Alright, and now back on topic, I still like Kirsten Powers, she cute as hell, but I just hit the mute button every time she starts to talk, so I don't come to completely hate her.

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 8.23.10 @ 9:06PM

You may have seen this already, but I never did, once again, because I didn't have access to youtube in Baghdad. It's called "The Empire Strikes Barack", I found it on the website I linked above, I thought it was funny. It's worth viewing just for the one scene with Hillary (as Darth) choking out Howard Dean, priceless!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8lvc-azCXY

nobama2010| 8.23.10 @ 12:15PM

Kirsten is an inch deep and mile wide. Why FOX keeps this vapid lib blonde on is beyond me. I think she is positioning herself for an MSNBC gig

W.L. Barton| 8.23.10 @ 12:19PM

She learned the "do not go on Fascist faux Newswhore Coprorate shill.
It is alway's the Faux style , slut with the short skirt, (their game to attract the frustrated angry white male) pretends to be impartial interviwer, and two quests supposedly representing opposing views.
The short skirt for Faux News and her arranged ally in the interview, both run their mouths, but talk over the guest, who is representing the opposing decent side of any arguement topic.
The First Amendment died, at least the freedom of the press insertion,, as the press is nothing but the corporate whore, brainwashing the braindead masses, by touting the elitist billionaires views, who know exactly the scam being played.

Bunky| 8.23.10 @ 6:01PM

Wile. E. Coyote,
when I watch Fox News they show only the body parts above the desk top.
I think you not only masturbate to Cornell Keith but also to the fox babes while you watch that special TV that shows their skirts.

Ward Dorrity | 8.23.10 @ 6:25PM

I have but one question for you:

Do your parents let you out the basment on occasion, or do they still feed you through a slot in the door?

ds80| 8.23.10 @ 7:53PM

Hah hah hah!
W L Barton ... scroll past ...

Oldefarte| 8.23.10 @ 12:55PM

Well said and true, Quin! I observed the original debate/exchange between Kelly and Powers, and the former [who has a law degree and prior legal experience] did absolutely [as you say] grind the latter underneath the desk in debate points and leave her speachless/defenseless. Powers seems to me to be a typical liberal-oriented AIRHEAD who plays the race card when she cannot argeu her point logically/factually [which is typical of all such liberals, who are mostly stupid IMO]. She compares well with Fox's Juan Williams in their usual jumpoffthecliff defeanse of Obama and the Democrats' policies. I suppose that network has commentators such as these two to prove their fair-and-balanced label. At least Alan Kolms could pur forth intelligent, factual arguments in debating Shawn Hannity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tonypal| 8.23.10 @ 3:50PM

I have to disagree with you on both Powers and Williams, although only slightly with Powers. I've watched her over the years on Fox and always thought she was much more fair-minded than your average leftist commentator. She's certainly a partisan, but I've seen her grudgingly criticize her own. However, she seems to be going off the deep end lately. So any recent criticisms of her style and attitude are spot on.

Juan Williams is a different story. I've always admired him and continue to do so, in spite of his liberalism. Juan is someone who doesn't buy into the whole victim mentality that far too many black folks accept as gospel. He's a staunch advocate of school choice and although he continues to defend a lost cause in Obama, he's a pretty decent fellow who doesn't carry a chip on his shoulder.

Colmes is a nice guy whose basic theme can be summed up thusly: Just because a couple of leftists say this or that (usually something highly obnoxious he doesn't wish to be associated with) doesn't mean that all liberals are blah, blah, blah. Of course, he was forced to use that line on an almost nighlty basis when he was with Hannity, which led me to conclude that most/all liberals were obnoxious and full of hate, etc. Colmes is a half wit whose only goal in life seems to be pointing out the (supposed) hypocrisy of right wingers in order to dilute the insanity of his fellow travelers.

Lastly, why does anyone respond to the likes of WLB? What purpose does it serve us to engage for even a moment with a guy who probably doesn't even wake up until noon, which is around the time his mom wants to finish making the beds.

Oldefarte| 8.24.10 @ 12:06PM

I stand by my assessment above. If you observed the exchange between Powers and Kelley, it was completely one-sided, since Kelley literally destroyed any arguement Powers put forth [and even threatened to, and should have, turned off Powers' microphone]. Powers writes for the NY Post which should tell you her story, since same is one step above the National Inquirer. Williams ALWAYS POLLYANNISHLY REPEATS THE OBAMA/DEMOCRATIC TALKING POINTS almost verbatim and disgustingly makes himself out to look foolish and stupid [maybe he is paid by Fox to do so, who knows, but it's obvious that he's reading Obama's partisaned political speech word for word from no doubt his teleprompter]. I disagree with Colmes but at least his arguments are his own thoughts and original/intelligent, even if they are wrong in principle!!!!

monty.crisco| 8.23.10 @ 1:31PM

WLB needs to get back on his meds....

One Trick Pony| 8.23.10 @ 3:47PM

She used to be fairly reasonable for a lib; maybe too reasonable and has been directed to pick up the shrill to stay on the White House guest list. Anyway, she also played the same card against Charles Krauthammer (who subsequently hammered her) regarding Maxine Powers and Charlie Rangle being the only African Americans involved with ethic trials in the house.

Trish| 8.23.10 @ 11:20PM

As an educated female conservative, I feel left out of Powers' worn out accusations. She has turned into Kirsten Pelosi Powers with her knee jerk lefty bromides. Perhaps the Fox folks are 'ginning' their token lefties up for more showbiz fireworks? This would include the increasingly annoying Juan. He made a fool of himself on the Sunday program. Likewise Powers when she went up against the far superior Kelly. That was pitiful. Eventually the overused racist charge loses its wattage. They will come up with some other hate filled term to try to stifle dissent. Until then, its fun to watch them turn themselves inside out to try to explain the neo-marxist in the WH.

JmsA| 8.23.10 @ 4:32PM

Don't be too hard on Kirsten, folks: Fear has a very destabilizing effect on people, especially those already somewhat detached from reality.

DG in GA| 8.23.10 @ 7:33PM

Excuse me, the REPUBLICANS ginning up charges of racism???? Did this woman not read the Journolist emails? Does she not watch the MSM she so wishes to be a part of?

katie| 8.23.10 @ 11:15PM

I couldn't agree with you more! I used to respect Kirsten Powers because she was reasonable and thoughtful, and not afraid to call out her own party when she felt they were wrong. Even though I hardly ever agreed with her, I didn't mind listening to her.

I don't know what's stuck up her you-know-what lately, but she has completely changed. She is taking ridiculous cheap shots and spewing outright lies. The Megyn Kelly thing was insane to watch - Powers totally contradicted herself. She's obviously got some issues going on or she's decided to tow the liberal line 100% of the time (a la Alan Colmes) for professional reasons. Either way, I turn the channel when she's on now. Give me Doug Schoen, Susan Estrich, Pat Caddell, even Ed Rendell or someone reasonable.

Heck, minus his Shirley Sherrod/FNC is racist crap, Howard Dean has made more sense lately than Kirsten Powers!

Brian| 8.24.10 @ 10:08AM

Don't count on Repubs to fight against affirmative action. It's still considered "out reach" in the Repub establishment because it doesn't affect their kids.

Joan| 8.27.10 @ 1:47AM

I totally agree with Katie. I used to put up with her, because I thought she was thoughtful, fair , and rather soft spoken, but not any more. I don't understand why Fox is still paying her. She needs to be paid by MSNBC now so that she can spew her ridiculous views without any challenges like the ones she got from Megyn Kelley.
