It's not just Rasmussen.  It's Gallup too.  The Republicans are WAY ahead in the generic congressional poll.

Reports Mark Hemingway at the Washington Examiner:

Fifty percent of the public says they're going to vote for Republicans in November, a seven point lead over Democrats. That's the biggest lead for Republicans ever measured in the 60 years Gallup has been taking this poll. Further, this poll question has a history of understating Republican support in the past. In August of 1994, a year when Republicans made historic electoral gains, Democrats were actually ahead in Gallup's generic poll.

Of course, things could change before November.  But it's hard to imagine a dramatic Democratic revival.

November 2 could be a long night for President Barack Obama & Co.

But what of '12?
You don't think anyone forgets 1996, do you?

ggoblue| 8.18.10 @ 10:13AM

are you serious? 99% of the country has forgotten or never noticed 96.

in 2012 the dems have to defend 25 out of 33 senate seats...a guaranteed loss of 5 - 10 more seats....

especially with barak at the top of the ticket...he will be a lame duck one man party of NO for the next 2 years....

it gets even worse but i have to go to work now...

But you people said the same of Clinton during 1993-4, the two years before Gingrich assumed the Speakership.

It could be a long few years for the electorate if those coming in don't stand united on principle to defuse this keg of dynomite...

We need to play this election like we are down 3-5 points and closing up to the minute the polls close.

As to 2012 Mr Brooks I fear that another economic Tsunami is on the near horizon that will seal the fate of the anointed one. The battle now is for the survival of the republic and I hope and pray that those we elect this fall will be up to the task.

"The battle now is for the survival of the republic and I hope and pray that those we elect this fall will be up to the task."

You are not very confident of the GOP, are you? why, is there something in the recent history of the GOP that leads you to this doubt?

Conservative Bob| 8.18.10 @ 9:36PM

Yes and no
I believe that the trouble that is coming is of a magnitude that it will challenge us as we have not been challenged in a very long time.

And if I am completely honest it is not only our leaders I am concerned about but the citizens as well. I do not know if enough of us have the character and moral courage to do the right things and return the nation to its proper course.

We have been a sleep for too long and allowed the political class of both parties to have their way. We have been weak and selfish and self absorbed and as a result the greatest nation in human history is crumbling in moral and economic decay.

I have only slightly greater regard for the GOP than I do for the Dems as on whole they are all a vile self serving corrupt caricature of what the founders intended.

While I have grave doubts about the GOP I know that the Democrats are owned body and soul by the liberal progressives and we must resist them with our dying breath if necessary if we are to save this great country

Obama is not Clinton| 8.18.10 @ 2:13PM

Alan, are you suggesting Obama comes out in early Nov and says "The error (sic) of big government is over and let's repeal Obamacare!"?

Please! Clinton was a moderate compared to "The One".

Oldefarte| 8.18.10 @ 2:50PM

It's the old story of the difference between POTENTIALITY and ACTUALITY. Conservative Republicans CAN POTENTIALLY win, but if/until American taxpayer-voters get off their arsses, go to the polls and vote for them in November will determine if those conservative Republicans ACTUALLY DO WIN!!!!!
