Not content to wait until 2014, when the federal government begins punishing Americans who don’t have health insurance, the top dogs in North Carolina’s university system have decreed that all students buy coverage — or else.

It’s a glimmer of what ObamaCare will eventually become. Last year, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors decided that students who aren’t covered by another plan, such as through a parent or employer, must purchase coverage through the system’s hand-picked provider, beginning in the 2010 fall semester.

The penalty if students don’t: getting booted out.

The premiums are reasonable — about $360 each semester across the system’s 16 campuses. Students who can’t afford the coverage can get it free through student aid.

But similar to the debate in Congress, pro-lifers are crying foul over the plan’s coverage for abortion. K-Lo over at NRO’s “The Corner” has the details. The plan covers abortions up to $500 with a 20 percent deductible for in-network providers.

University officials argue that they aren’t forcing students to purchase abortion coverage, since they’re free to buy coverage elsewhere. But if students don’t buy health insurance, they can’t attend. Period. Besides, how many pro-life students will unknowingly purchase coverage that funnels cash to a procedure they find morally repugnant?

It’s yet another example of how ObamaCare, and policies like it, benefit the abortion industry.

The University of California system has had a mandatory health insurance for undergraduates since 2000----for grad and foreign students prior, and a few select campuses prior to that. Aside from any abortion funding, I am not clear how this is so controversial.

Don't freak out please Elle. Pete has a point. Even back in the dark ages, I had to have health insurance in college.

Ahhh... the joys of coersion... most don't know or care that it is happening. Its for your own good, don't you know.
What interest does the school have at stake? Exactly?

Just because the insurance covers abortions, that doesn't mean that students are being forced to have abortions. Give me a break. $360 per semester, someone ought to be saying thank you. Can't get health insurance like that anywhere else. And if students can't afford it, they get it for free. Tell me again, what is the problem? Oh yeah, we'd rather people die than help them get insurance, especially if that insurance covers abortions.

My son is a student at the University of Pittsburgh. It just sent out a letter about their Student Health Plan. The annual rate for the Standard Student Health Care Plan for a single student is $1,365.36. It is much higher for a student, his or her spouse and/or children. A family plan has a $11,453.40 annual fee.

What is being charged here is the real cost of insurance.

The University of Pittsburgh is part of the Pennsylvania State University system like UNC and the University of California. Insurance is not mandatory at Pitt as it is in the latter two systems.

What is happening in UNC and in the California system is that the Educational Ruling Class is being subsidized by the Country Class to help fund their tenure, huge salaries, short working hours, benefits and pensions from tuitions paid by students who can get subsidized health insurance while attending their colleges! It is one of the classic liberal rip offs that Professor Angelo Codevilla wrote about! And as every one knows, the State of California is on the verge of bankruptcy! North Carolina will soon join them!
