The Obama administration is
considering it. The idea is to have the U.S. Citizen and
Immigration Services (USCIS) just start handing out green cards
to illegals.
USCIS, a part of the Obama administration, outlines the ideas
in a draft memo that includes the possibility of issuing green
cards to tens of thousands who entered the country illegally.
“In the absence of Comprehensive Immigration Reform, CIS can
extend benefits and/or protections to many individuals and
groups by issuing new guidance and regulations,” the memo
advises.
Illegal immigration in Arizona
It was prepared by senior aides for CIS Director Alejandro N.
Mayorkas and made public by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), who
last month asked President Obama for assurances that rumors of
a reprieve for illegal immigrants were unfounded. “This memo
gives credence to our concerns that the administration will go
to great lengths to circumvent Congress and unilaterally
execute a back-door amnesty plan,” Grassley told ProPublica, a
non-profit investigative team.
The Obama administration cannot legalize the entire illegal
immigrant population this way, much less put them on a path to
citizenship. But it is a democratically unaccountable start.

Why were the Dems usually able to stop Republicans 2000-2006, aside from stripping war funds? The Republicans could have been the "party of no" in 2010, but they are on the road to becoming the "party of nothing".
Nate| 7.30.10 @ 10:20PM
I don't approve of this scheme, but Republicans simply REFUSE to discuss a sensible plan to reform the immigration laws.
That the laws need to be reformed anyone can plainly see.
Republicans refuse to discuss a path to legalization, but they also refuse to say what would be done with the 10 million who are in the country.
It's absolutely disingenuous. The notion that we are going to have a pogrom in which 10 million people are rounded up in few nights of the long knives is utterly ridiculous. It will not happen, not in the United States of America.
So what is the solution?
Obama has INCREASED the number of deportations by 10%, focusing on illegal immigrants who have committed other crimes.
Without Republicans acting in good faith, I have little hope anything will improve.
Deborah D | 7.31.10 @ 8:20AM
Democrats refuse to secure the border. Democrats sue AZ for trying to protect its citizens from a war on the border, from those who have made Phoenix the number two kidnap capital of the world (Mexico City is numero uno).
Seal the border -- then we can talk about the rest of this BS. Protect the country from illegal invaders first. That's called logic.
Bob| 7.31.10 @ 8:48AM
Suppose amnesty is granted for current illegal immigrants. You forgot to address the future. What about aliens who enter this country illegally after amnesty? How are they to be handled? What more amnesty? You need to clear your polluted brain and flush it out with common sense. Amnesty will open the flood gates of border crossings flooding America with ILLEGAL immigrants including terrorists bent on destroying this country.

cashless| 7.31.10 @ 9:48AM
I favor enforcing the laws that are on the books. I realizze this is a novel appraoch but, by golly, it just might work.
As far as rounding up 10 million, that's a straw man. You don't have to round them up. You declare that all undocumented workers (p.c. for illegal aliens) have 30 days to leave the country or they will be rounded up, documented by photograph, fingerprint and DNA. Then they can leave they same way they came in....walking across the border. They sneaked across a border into this country somehow, they can damn well sneak back.
As an alternative, how about we, as a nation, adopted a Law of Reciprosity? In other words, we amend all our immmigrations laws to make them identical with the immigraton law of the origin of the illegal alien, i.e., if you are from Mexico, you will be adjudicated and held to the same laws illegals in Mexico, or Guatemala, or Nicouraga, or whevever. Hey if it's OK for other countries to have and enforce strict immigration policies, there is no reason for the US not to do the same. After all, most of the illegals from the last 30 years, in my opinion, care nothing for assimilating, learn and adopt a new culture, learn English as their primary language but owe their entire loyalty to the country from which they came. Therefore since they love that country so much they should have no problem abiding by that country's immigration laws. It's a plain as the nose on your face.
Oldefarte| 7.31.10 @ 11:48AM
Nate, I'll have to agree with you and know that you are absolutely correct in stating that illegal immigrants will not be rounded up and deported. The solution IMO is to politically TAG & BAG them by, through legal/governmental investigation identifying, registering, documenting, I.D.'ing them, all on a TEMPORARY BASIS, so that we know who, what, etc they are. Grant the non-criminal ones a temporary I.D. to work in this country, and after their time limit expires, arrest and deport them back to Mexico [assuming those of whom simply are here for employment purposes]. If they wish to become Americans, then legally require them to begin [at the back of the line] the citizenship process at the time of the I.D.'ing, and require ALL OF THEM to periodically report to an immigration office. Nate, your political [Obama's talking points] slight-of-hand concerning his deportation percentages is BS, since your CHOSEN ONE and his administration is ILLEGALLY IGNORING THE FEDERAL IMMIGRATIONS LAW THAT HE IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO UPHOLD FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES! He/they turn a blind eye to enforcement to garner political support from the legal Hispanics that will vote for the Democratic Party in elections. That is again ILLEGAL, and he should be brought up on IMPEACHMENT CHARGES for not fulfilling his fidiciary duty as an elected official responsible for doing so!!!!!!!!!!
Warrior | 7.31.10 @ 1:57PM
The Democrats had a fillibuster proof senate until Scott Brown was elected. The Republicans could not block a blessed thing for many months. Yet we have Nate again clamoring how it is all the Republicans fault we ended up here. Nate, again has the talking points and no independent thought. Where are your statistics proving that deportation has increased? The ICE site only lists statistics through FY2008. Those statistics have a funny trend of increasing about 10 - 20% each year since FY01. http://www.ice.gov/pi/nr/0810/081023washington.htm
There is no need for either party to act. Things will improve with the enforcement of the laws.

Sure right... wealthy well connected set for life pork barrel fraud is more of what he was. McConnell couldn't stop a runny nose with a box of tissues for more than a year and still catches the blame.
Expect to see this particular angle pounded like a cheap drum. More blame the Republicans for interfering with The Bamafiscent One.
The Democrat Propaganda Department will eventually have a full fledged Mau-Mau brewed within the next few weeks. I expect it to be the first theme of the campaign to save the Senate:
1. Blame the Republicans (Self-explanatory)
2. Play the inclusion in malfeasance game - (This is showing up when the pol or pundit deflects bad pol numbers by changing the subject from DEMOCRAT to INCUMBENT, thus invoking tactic #1 in the end.)
3- Scandal out- (Given the Rangel - Waters show that could be happening in the Fall, the Dems will get the media to "move on" quickly. The coverage will be sparse and minimized to Fox and the Web which will be dismissed as partisan. Both will "retire" and it will all be swept under the rug.
Scandal in - (There will be a few choice Republicans with October surprises that will suddenly bloom on anyone that they fiugure they can smear.)
It is going to be a dirty campaign. The Democrats are running scared and are wounded... as such they are dangerous.

A little bit of knowledge is a bad thing. Nate must have seen a documentary on Nazi Germany and now he can toss out a term like "night of the long knives". Just as with his irrational comparison to the Holocaust, this comparison is almost to stupid to dignify with an answer. But alas, I am bored.
The night of the long knives was Hitler and his henchmen settling old scores with other leaders in the Nazi party so of course your foolish comparison is invalid.
Ragnar| 8.1.10 @ 8:55PM
The border with Mexico has to be completely shut down-it can be done if we elect leaders with the cojones to do it. Then we will have to to stop all immigration into the US for 10 years -from anywhere. Then we will have to begin the vetting and deportation of all criminal alien deviants while at the same time we have to begin forced assimilation of all those who want to be here. End all "diversity" programs -everyone will become English speaking Americans whether they like it not. If we do not do this there will be blood.
Taxpayer| 7.31.10 @ 12:01AM
Disgusting, but not surprising.
But now that it's out in the open, maybe Obama won't do it. At least, not before November.
OldBull| 7.31.10 @ 1:49AM
Right off the bat you show why Republicans doubt the good will of Democrats on this issue. Why does "comprehensive reform" have to include legalization? That a priori assumption gives away your whole game, and it explains why we won't agree to discuss "reform" until the border is secured. After the Dims tricked us in the 1986 amnesty deal, why would we agree to be tricked again?
And we don't need a "pogrom" (nice choice of emotional word there, Nate) to induce the illegal aliens to leave. We can do it much more efficiently by prosecuting the employers who hire them, the cities that give them "sanctuary," and the bleeding hearts who abet them.
It's time we start speaking the truth. Why would "we the people" want to grant citizenship to 11 million people who, in the main, could not meet the standards required for admission to the U.S.? Why do we want to grant citizenship to those who have the least to offer in terms of education or ability?
Deborah D | 7.31.10 @ 8:23AM

It’s important to understand Obama’s ideological identity.
Obama is just going about the business of doing those things that represent who he is and what he represents. His mother was a "fellow traveler" (communist sympathizer). His father, aside from being an "inspirational father figure," was a communist, a raging alcoholic, a polygamist and a wife beater. He died in a drunken stupor. His childhood mentor was Frank Marshall Davis, a dedicated communist, a stratospheric sexual pervert and a self-admitted pedophile.
Obama’s closest friends and associates over his formative years and throughout his adult life have been and are radical leftists and Marxists. Obama’s career as a community organizer was inspired by Saul Alinsky (Rules for Radicals). Saul Alinsky was a community organizer and known communist agitator. Alinsky developed his tactics from those of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. Obama is also a disciple of the Cloward-Piven strategy (orchestrated crisis & chaos).
Obama attended a Marxist inspired, Black Liberation Theology church for 20 years, and then said he didn’t know anything about the hate-filled racist, anti-Semitic rants that his pastor regularly delivered there. The pastor that delivered those hate-filled sermons was Jeremiah Wright, an “ex-Muslin.”
OBAMA IS THE LOGICAL OUTCOME OF THE ENVIRONMENT THAT CREATED AND NURTURED HIM.
Barack Hussein Obama is a Marxist revolutionary He will NOT back away from his agenda to dismantle America.
The complete destruction of thee American free market (what’s left of it) and the freedoms of Americans has long been the unholy grail of Marxists around the world. Obama describes himself and his comrades as “progressives.” In fact they are Marxists and many of them have openly identified themselves as such.
Obama sees himself as the one destined to deliver this country to Marxism. Amnesty is an importan part of the strategy in making this Marxist wet dream come true.

Misinformation, hysteria, bigotry, violent hatred of minorities -- it's all here. You people perfectly reflect the propaganda you're fed on right wing talk radio.
Setting aside the most malignant and ignorant of the posts above, let me address two issues.
ENFORCEMENT:
Obama is enforcing the law as much or more than Bush did. Deportations were UP in 2009 by 10%. Obama has deployed MORE resources to the boarder in the form of agents and National Guard troops than Bush did. The idea that he's neglecting enforcement is simply FALSE.
Now, is he keeping every immigrant out? Is he rounding up and deporting millions of immigrants who are already here?
No. But you have to look at these things with some kind of perspective. Ronald Reagan did not stop all use of cocaine in the United States, but that doesn't mean I should call him a crack dealer.
"AMNESTY"
By calling any reform with which you disagree "amnesty," you show your considerable bad faith. A people becomes incapable of governing itself -- it ceases to be a free people -- when it cannot debate issues of national importance honestly.
"Amnesty" should only apply to proposals that advocate no penalty being attached to immigrants who are allowed to stay. We can debate on the SIZE of the penalty, but once you eliminate the idea that 10 million people can be forcibly driven from the country -- and it would be a blunder of historic proportions to try -- you're left with crafting some kind of penalty that penalizes those who came illegally in a way that is fair and just.
Why can't we deport 10 million people?
Think of that number. What does it remind you of?
What would it mean to have armed men pounding down the doors of simple agriculture workers, taking mothers away from children, brothers from brother? What would it mean to have people unwilling EVER to cooperate with the police -- say in the case of reporting a serial rapist or drug gang to investigators. It's an invitation to lawlessness and brutality. You'd have to be a fucking fascist to enjoy the idea of this kind of purge. The government is armed enough against its own people to prosecute the miserably failed "drug war."

"wished to change" is the correct term. They weren't able to change them because the American people wouldn't have it. Reagan thought he was helping...we've now had the experiece of 25 years of the massive illegal immigration that mistake caused (thanks to Ted Kennedy -- who screwed this country more ways than we can count -- another leftie whacko).
Obama is trying to circumvent the law -- he's trying to go around Congress -- who has sole responsibility for immigration law (with the Dems happily giving up their responsibilities and duties to the executive branch.) With a government trying to circumvent their own laws, we have no laws. I don't care if it's Bush, Reagan, Clinton or Obama -- screw them all because they're trying to(or in Obama's case has been) screw Americans! This is still our country, and we'll fight you leftists who are trying to ruin it, to give it away, to bring it down. Deal with it.

All 10,000 crime victim visas issued
--an excerpt:
"By SUZANNE GAMBOA / Associated Press Writer
Posted: 07/15/2010 09:57:06 AM MDT
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government has issued all 10,000 visas available this year for immigrant crime victims who help authorities investigate and prosecute perpetrators.
The last of this fiscal year's supply of visas was approved Thursday morning, marking the first time the government has hit the statutory "U" visa limit since the program became active two years ago.
The visas were created as part of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. They are given to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and other crimes in exchange for cooperation with law enforcement.
In 2007, attorneys for immigrants who had been victims of crime sued the federal government for failing to issue any visas. Only 52 were issued in 2008. About 6,000 applications were approved last fiscal year.
Alejandro Mayorkas, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, said that an increased focus on U visa processing, as well as increased outreach and resources to crime victims groups and law enforcement, have contributed to increased applications.
"We will not turn our attention away from victims of crime," Mayorkas said. Another 10,000 visas will be available in October, when the 2011 fiscal year begins. Until then, the federal government can grant interim legal status to non-citizens whose applications are approved for the visas so they can work.
Most visas are given to people not allowed to be in the country, but some are given to people with some sort of permission to be in the U.S."

If the President decides to continue to abuse his office with a slew of administrative orders that are designed to circumvent the constitutionally derived powers of Congress, I see no reason why the GOP should not at the very least draw up articles of impeachment if and when they win back the House. It is one thing to issue recess appointments (the Constitution allows for that), or Executive Orders that again are allowed for. But it can be argued that crafting administrative regulations that circumvent the powers of Congress rise to impeachable offences.
