Roe cheapened life and began the decline of American culture and Susan Bolton's decision is the final straw...balkanization hence the soon to be realized destruction of the nation.
Ron Kilmartin| 7.29.10 @ 1:07PM
Bolton seems to be making things up as she goes along, persoanal opinions instead of law. There is no basis for her decision. This again raises the issue of life-time appointments for federal judges, and the need for a ready means for impeaching judges who ignore the constitution, impeachment by the people in the jurisdiction of that judge or judges.
AZFlyBoy| 7.29.10 @ 1:35PM
Arizona illegals think Judge Bolton gives them legal status. Here's a message for them: You are still in this country illegally, This court ruling just makes it a little harder to find you but we will find you.
TooManyJens| 7.29.10 @ 2:26PM
I think anyone who equates abortion with the suspension of enforcement of a law that would lead to harassment of citizens and legal immigrants needs their head examined.
Frankly, the people of this country have their will trampled on all the time. The laws that are made at the behest of corporate interests aren't what we want. You're not talking about "the people having their will trampled on" but something much more specific -- namely, the fear and hatred that has been whipped up against immigrants.
SDN| 7.29.10 @ 2:42PM
What harassment? For providing the same id I get asked for 10 times a day? or for enforcig the Federal law that's on the books?
Don't be surprised if people start refusing to convict anyone on any charge involving FedGov.
ECM| 7.29.10 @ 3:14PM
Nobody "fears" or "hates" immigrants of *any* type. (Or at least no one that isn't instantly-marginalized.)
But the simple fact is, we are (theoretically) a nation of laws, and if you don't like the fact that immigration is, legally, restricted, how about working to get those laws changed instead of accusing your opponents of malfeasance, bigotry, etc.? But, then, you realize that vast majorities of your countrymen--honest, hardworking people in *all* walks of life, from the poor to the rich--do not agree with your point of view. (A lot of that having to do w/ the fact that you bathe in ignorance like my cats bathe in sunbeams.)
(Granted, these laws are only going to get more prevalent, since your side simply can't seem to grasp that huge, huge majorities of your fellow Americans agree with this stance.)
And, finally, how about reading the law in question and actually pointing out where/how it promotes harassment, instead of offering a content-free 'argument, long on misplaced emotions and short on actual factual material? It's so short that even someone as reflexively ill-informed as you could read it in a half hour.
Al Adab| 7.29.10 @ 3:32PM
Do we not all have a driver's license and a voter registration card? Illegals don't.
Do we not all show ID when stopped by police or writing a check at the store? Illegals can't.
This is not about immigrants who are regular and legal and have ID. This is about illegal entrants living in our country. That group includes people- upwards of 20% of those interdicted- from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, China, Philipines and others. Many of those from M E countries were taught Spanish in South American camps and represent Hezbollah, Hamas and others. Do you really think they are looking for landscaping jobs?.
Stan Marsh| 7.29.10 @ 3:56PM
The correlation between the Roe v. Wade decision and Bolton ruling is that in both cases existing laws were bypassed in favor of judicial legislating. By the way, using the courts to allow illegals to continue being exploited wouldn't be a ruling "made at the behest of corporate interests" would it? Someone must be giving illegals a reason to come here; illegal business practices anyone?
Charles R. Williams| 7.30.10 @ 11:14AM
I am not afraid of immigrants. I don't hate them. I do not believe that illegal immigration benefits my country. I do not believe that legal immigration is structured in such a way that my country benefits. We will be better off when our immigration laws are enforced. We will be even better off when legal immigration is reduced and when we are admitting more people to this country who bring something to the table. I believe that large concentrations of immigrants from certain very different cultures damages our country and that it is essential for us to be discriminating about who we admit. I believe we should aggressively assimilate the people we do admit with little regard for their native cultures.
This is not fear. This is not hatred. This is not unjust. This is what sensible countries who want to preserve their way of life do.
S.L. Toddard| 7.30.10 @ 11:32AM
the fear and hatred that has been whipped up against immigrants
Liberals can never deal honestly with the issue at hand, thus straw men like this "argument" here. Sorry, but opposing the displacement and dispossession of one's people does not demonstrate any "hatred" or "fear" of those doing the displacing. One has a duty to defend the existence of one's people. When Republicans allege that Liberals "hate America" this is precisely what they are talking about - Liberals wish to see Americans replaced by Mexicans. Liberals truly wish to see Americans a minority in America.
Sorry, but the allegation is demonstrably true.
Derek Leaberry| 7.29.10 @ 2:32PM
Expect a reelected John McCain, with his acolytes Lindsey Graham and John Kyl, to join with a reelected Harry Reid to pass a comprehensive immigration bill in the lameduck Congress just before Christmas. The bill will include amnesty. The people will be trampled over because Senators McCain, Graham, Kyl and the Democrats want to trample them.
Al Adab| 7.29.10 @ 3:35PM
Derek,
I fear you may be right. What follows if your scenario comes to pass? If the ballot box fails, what recourse is left?
I fear we have passed the fork in the road and that both trails ahead of us are undesireable and wrong.
Spicy Joker| 7.29.10 @ 3:37PM
The Repubics are responsible for this decision because they didn't filibuster this left-wing judge in the first place.
Joanna OReilly| 7.29.10 @ 3:51PM
Equal blame here for sure. If the Republicans had made more of an effort to defeat this bill, then people living in the country illegally (or illegals trying to GET IN) might think twice. That's assuming they thought ONCE.
What's the deal though? I mean, I'm from Canada and the same thing is happening here! Once upon a time, we had a language law that you had to know had least enough English and/or French to be able to fill out an application. Not anymore. There are people where I work who can barely speak English.
I'd say the world was GOING to heck in a handbasket, but I'd be wrong. We're already there!
Mita| 7.29.10 @ 10:24PM
What I want to know is this - why do they not resume impeaching activist judges? Maybe then they'd all have a little more respect for the Constitution they are sworn to uphold!
