Gen. Stanley McCrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is
coming to Washington after being forced to apologize for a
Rolling Stone profile in which he and his aides are
quoted making derisive remarks about Obama administration
officials, and even the president himself.
The full article is available here.
A taste:
Even though he had voted for Obama, McChrystal and his new
commander in chief failed from the outset to connect. The
general first encountered Obama a week after he took office,
when the president met with a dozen senior military officials
in a room at the Pentagon known as the Tank. According to
sources familiar with the meeting, McChrystal thought Obama
looked “uncomfortable and intimidated” by the roomful of
military brass. Their first one-on-one meeting took place in
the Oval Office four months later, after McChrystal got the
Afghanistan job, and it didn’t go much better. “It was a
10-minute photo op,” says an adviser to McChrystal. “Obama
clearly didn’t know anything about him, who he was. Here’s the
guy who’s going to run his fucking war, but he didn’t seem very
engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed.”

McChrystal is getting what he deserves. ANYONE in the military who votes for a Democrat, especially Obummer, should be held in Gitmo and water-boarded under suspicion of being a dumbass.
Unfortunately, generals are political animals and it seems McChrystal is no better than the scumbag Democrats who have been ruining the country since they were formed. Now he's sorry he made these awful comments - typical.

Amen. If he hadn't voted for the moron I would be more inclined to support him but he did vote for the moron so he's on his own.

umm if you look through history it was always republicans who put our country in SH*T and the democrats that pulled us out... get some education. Be patient he cant turn around 8 years of what BUSH did over night.

Really? How do you explain JFK and LBJ's Vietnam debacle then? Stupid fool.
Oilbama's a complete incompetent corruptocrat--our country may not even survive the Commie clown. Blow it out your butt, libtard.
e zach| 6.24.10 @ 12:33PM
You are exactly right!!! He is destroying our country every day. And furthermore, he allowed that stupid president of Mexico to publicly shit on our entire country and the moron sat right in front of him and agreed with him. He should be more embarrased by that.

I would expect that observation from someone

righty mouthpieces Limbaugh, Drudge and Beck.
If you would actually care to educate yourself you may find the official start of our involvement in
Vietnam is considered to be Nov 1, 1955 when
Eisenhower deployed the military assistance

stated on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Peter| 6.23.10 @ 6:08PM
You are wrong. FDR started WWll; Truman started The Korean War and Kennedy started Vietnam and Johnson escalated the war. It was Nixon who got us out of Vietnam. Why is it that people like you are so ignorant of history. You believe the BS you are spoonfed by the LEFT!

Peter, they're Stalinists--they re-write history, it's the only way they can survive.
Oh, Willy Clinton fiddled with interns instead of taking Bin Laden into custody when Sudan offered him to us MANY TIMES!
September 11, 2001 was the incompetent corruptocrat Clinton's fault.

Check your history, kyala...don't you remember the hostages in Iran....held for over 400 days during the Carter administration and released immediately after Reagan took office.

Vietnam was a total CIA war. Putting an end to Vietnam and "scattering the CIA into a thousand pieces" is what got JFK assassinated. This was what Ike was talking about when he said "beware the military/industrial complex" = oil companies + CIA.
Michael| 6.26.10 @ 3:30PM
Hmm, that a battle-hardened fighting man doesn't respect a dim, panty-waisted liberal / faux elitist, who has never participated in the military or economy that he now controls, should come as no surprise. Obama has worked hard to earn the disrespect he so richly deserves from America's fighting men and women.

Kyala, you must be reading a history book from Iran which spouts such trash as the Holocust never happened, etc. I think you will find that it is the opposite!!!!!

Ken (Old Texican)| 6.22.10 @ 9:36AM
Eric,
I agree. Having voted for Obama is all I need to know about McChrystal off the battlefield.
The real problem is, that the Repubs could not come up with a better candidate than sad-sack McCain for an alternative. Possibly, the general knew some things about McCain that precluded voting for him as commander in chief. Perhaps he was hoping the blank slate (Obama) had something to offer?????
Naif as hell if you ask me.
Eric Cartman| 6.22.10 @ 9:51AM
What worries me is that the stupid Republicans will find a way to screw up this coming election - its like they have a double agent in the RNC. Like Price, head of security in the movie, Stalag 17.
They won't support a Gov. Christie of Gov. Brewer, smart, articulate conservatives. They'll get a RINO, me too, Obama Lite and screw the pooch once again - pitiful, just pitiful.

Thanks, General. You did your nation proud.

Croos8r| 6.22.10 @ 11:12AM
What? Generals are politicians? Nooooooo! Man, I remember some dude on these boards regularly mentioning that and getting flamed by the so-called conservatives here.
McChrystal is a flipping incompetent fool, and the fact he voted for Obama should preclude his from being a cook in the military, let alone the super-dooper supreme-o commandante in Afghanistan. These types of fools are running the show, and we wonder why the war has drug on for what now, almost 9 years? Hmmmmm.

Anyone with any military intelligence knows this war should of been over within 6 months to a year with our capabilities. Politics has totaly prevented this. Let the generals and our war machine have their way and the war will be over-very soon. Washington does not care nor do they want to win the war.
Bobby Bell | 6.22.10 @ 11:46AM
General McChrystal is a military man, and they are not normally trained in "How to spin it". As a Military School Graduate and Veteran, I must say that his training was from the first days of training, about honor and integrity, and telling it like it is. That is the shortest distance between two points, and the way to accomplish the mission.
How should he know that he should spin this interview, like a Democrat or Republican? He should have never taken the interview. But having said that, he should definitely have an elephant in the room with he and Obama, and he should definitely wear a wire, to any meeting with this slithery serpent, or any of his henchmen, just to protect himself, and in case a moment arises where he can prove part of his case, which it most assuredly will, with this incompetent, arrogant, narcissistic empty suit, who quite obviously intends to bring the US to her needs, or to her grave, if he is as smart as given credit for, or forced in one way or another to resign right now, if he is not as smart as givin credit for. I believe he is smart, but seriously mentally deranged, as are the idealogues he represents, to whom power and omnipotence and greed, far and away outweigh any moral substance in favor of the country, and its "subjects". But most people are afraid to say what they really feel. They are scared of this pantywaist.
notmypresident2010| 6.22.10 @ 12:07PM
The General broke the first rule of Monarchies, Never criticize the King. Didnt he watch the Tudors?
BobbyBell| 6.22.10 @ 12:20PM
To notmypresident2010. Not mine either. Nor my dictator. Liberty or death. He did not learn from the mistakes of Patton or McArthur. But quite possibly, he is at the point where he is exasperated, and can not take any more useless loss of life and limb, or total incompetence and useless agendas from these idealogues. Not even Republicans have the stones to back the one of their ilk, who has the stones to say what he really thinks in this administration. They are afraid of drawing a line in the sand and saying wait a minute, that's enough. At least McChrystal is a man of courage.
Fed Up| 6.22.10 @ 2:27PM
Bobby Bell your an idiot.
Bobbybell| 6.22.10 @ 8:50PM
Fed Up-I like the facts myself. I do not randomly call people idiots, or anything resembling that, however I might claim that they have been drinking too much KoolAid. I do not trust Rolling Stone, of all literary wonders, 'scuse me man, can I have a toke', as much as the Prez has taught me that I can not trust anything that comes out of his mouth either.
Case in point, would it make any difference to you, if you knew that the Prez's buddies at Goldman Sachs sold 4.9 million shares of BP stock, two days before the explosion of the rig in the Gulf. Does it matter to you that this President demonizes oil companies here in the states, while giving giving $2 Billion, (with a B), in our stimulus money to PetroBras for deep water exploration and drilling, and they are one of the richest and most profitable oil companies on the planet, except that George Soros is one of their major stockholders. The Socialist owned nationalist oil company of Brazil.
My point is McChrystal is in the no mans land to fight and win a war. Obama is in the White House "for what"? The emperor has no clothes. I have heard all sorts of things about dereliction of duty, and insubordination and things today from Civilians who have not got a clue. The first thing The Detractor in Chief, the 'Boy Wonder', the empty suit, needs to learn, is that respect is earned, not guaranteed. The second thing that he needs to learn is, The Oath States that "I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God." It does not say a damn thing about the President. This is the Oath I took. Read Rolling Stone?? Yeah I will do that now that it is available. Who is going to guarantee me that it is not distorted? I even read the Arizona Republic and The New York Times. God are they distortions of the truth. So what is your point exactly, Demonizing me, another conservative?
Fed Up| 6.22.10 @ 2:31PM
Bobby Bell. I'll take back my comment as the way it probably came across. I didn't intend that to be a personal attack to you or your views. Everyone is certainly entitled to them. But you say some pretty strange things and I dont believe you have performed enough research to state them. Did you even read the entire RS article before posting your comments? I don't think anyone could be more against this administration that I am, however, before I post a comment I get ALL the facts. This way, I don't have someone telling me I'm an idiot. :-)
Nate| 6.22.10 @ 9:53PM
Fed Up, you're an idiot.
John Z| 6.22.10 @ 3:55PM
I read the Rolling Stone piece just now, and several things occurred to me.
First, the author, Michael Hastings, used devices such as 'a source close to,' 'a close aide said,' but only rarely has direct quotes of McCrystal when talking about something controversial. I have little doubt that Gen. McCrystal's aide might know exactly how he feels on such subjects. B ut it is disingenuous of the author, I think, to paint the portrait of the man that Hastings paints using so many 3rd party quotes or, more disturbing, his own evaluation of the situation in Afganistan. The kinds of observations he attributes to McCrystal are the kinds of things general write in their memoirs, not while they're still on active duty. That is not to say they don't think them, or discuss them with subordinates and colleagues, but certainly not if they know a reporter is within earshot ... unless that reporter has given them some impression that such thoughts are only for "background" - naive of the Army guys, but they're not trained to deal with political reporters nor do I want them wasting their time on such.
Also, it says a lot to me that a picture of the author, complete with fashionable suit and sunglasses, disembarking a military helicopter and looking oh, so suave ... this picture appears as a centerpiece, page two. Hmm. So ... this isn't really journalism, but editorial, yes? Well, no - not the way Rolling Stone presents it.
I think differently.
Finally, the way this is being spun up in Washington foreshadows a forgone conclusion in the best tradition of the Beltway. In other words, Mr. Gibbs' coy avoidance of coming right out and saying "he's gone," but implying that nothing is "off the table" speaks volumes - the politicians are embarrassed and have already decided.
Yes, I feel the same way many of you do about McCrystal's reported vote for Obama for president. Yes, I think any military member who votes for a liberal has got to be crazy - my opinion. Yet, I know some very smart people who wanted "a change" - people I respect for many other reasons. I don't care if they're blathering idiots when it comes to evaluation of politics and a pragmatic view of the world. If they're good at what they do - and I think McCrystal might be such - then let them be political bumpkins, but let them do their real jobs effectively and without political interference.
To all those who have carefully followed the past year and evaluated the effectiveness, the change, the new Washington under the tenure of their golden boy and his Laurel Pelosi and Hardy Reid ... I ask you: How about that change? 8)
diane| 6.22.10 @ 6:53PM
I find some of the comments so sad. I have a 20 year old young man in the military and I can't believe that the general would speak such words. while our children are fighting and dying each day.
what you may think about our commander is not important. My son carry out his duty even if they
are not to his liking. It is his job to follow orders
and as a soldiers that is what General McCrystal's job is . With this kind of moral from the top leader
how can we expect our young men to follow order and put their lives on the line. Usually I am quick to defend my president but what I say now to you all, a couple of years ago
BUSH sat in the oval office and the same mud
you throw at President Obama you threw at him
I am thankful that he cares enough to take on this job so many compain but I truly don't think their was anyone running for the office repulican or democrat that could do any better. We're all so busy trying to bring him down but you'd better pray for him and remember things are bad but it could be so much worse. We got a glimpse of it about a year ago. You people better start praying and remember Obama is not the enemy the enemy is out their watching and waiting to strike again. 9/11 took my breath away what will it take for us all to stand together and fight for America and stop fighting each other.

The reality is that Michael Hastings has screwed the pooch as far as embedded journalists are concerned. NO ONE will talk to a reporter now and what information which was coming out will now dry up. What a stupid thing to do. What exactly did Mr. Hastings think he was trying to accomplish other than sending one of our best generals into retirement?
When will we learn that going to "WAR" means killing people. If we are not going to go there to win then get out and stop doing this. It's the same crap that happened in Vietnam. Nixon tried to fight a war in order to win it and he was vilified!
Obama is a novice. He has zero experience. He is not qualified to be leading any Armed Forces, much less there US Armed Forces.

Maybe if we had a true badass running the show the troops wouldn't wanna kick him in the nuts. I dunno though, is not patrolling in areas where there may be bad guys a "badass" move or a faggot-ass metrosexual move?

Bobby Bell, speaks a lot of truth. There is an awful amount of slamming others opinions here. These issues on McCrystal shouldn't even be given air time. While the man s likened to Patton, or Macarther, the information in that whole interview was based on hearsay information. If anyone here is a lawyer, you know as well as everyone else that it don't hold up in court. What that shit does do is taint the jury, who in this case is Obama and public opinion.
Today, some 40 years after taking the Oath of Allegiance and serving in Vietnam. I will still stand and attempt to defend this country against any all threats. Be it to your right to bad mouth some ones opinion (given to us by the right of free speech) or some physically attacking our shores or borders.

He apparently doesn't BS when he states things but speaks in a clear fashion which is often lacking. A lot of people like and understand this way of life and honesty from someone they feel they can trust.
He made a mistake and owed up to it... To me this is honorable and what being a man is all about, nothing more nothing less.
If we had more people who just said things the way they are and didn't hide behind scripted double talk things would improve all the way around.

Obama HATES our military, which is why he was more then comfortable sitting in an anti-American church for 20 years where the recurring theme was "America is the worst terrorist nation in the world".
Barry had to be coaxed into covering his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance, he had to be coaxed into wearing the American flag lapel pin, and he admitted to "seeking out the marxist professors" in college in his book Dreams From My Deadbeat Father.

I see you continue the long-standing liberal tradition of saying viscous things to those who you disagree with. As I have said before, open-minded and patriotic liberals are about as easy to find as unicorn ranches.

Yup. The true haters are ugly Liberals like wanda--they hate the truth.
Bet she's a porker, too.

Generals McChrystal and General Patreus are very astute and brilliant military commanders to say the least about those intellectual giant. However, General McChrystal so called faux pas or indiscretion on the Rolling Stone in June 2010 might used this cunning face saving tactic to leave the theater of operation to avoid associating his name with a possible debacle in Afghanistan.

after reading all your coments . i remain surprized at your name calling and of couse anger, instead of calling eachother names do any of you write to these people in power and tell them what you think , and what you want and what you are so dissapointed in, like their behaviour , the war, their choice, ect ect and what they are doing and what they are covering up....politics is big, huge money making machine....who is the richest, who wants to be rich (countries) ....we the people are lead by a nose ring, to beleive what ever they want us to believe, they spin us and pat us on the head and then they do what ever they want, we pay , the people who fight these wars pay big time with their lives, all in the name of big money, wake up people....start name calling the right people not eachother on this blog, that solves nothing, but to get your blood pressure up foolishly, and the people running the show get away with everything.
