The Spectacle Blog

I received an email from Capitol Hill noting:

“You might be interested in the attached provisions of the Obama budget released in February 2010, which include proposed funding cuts for Minerals Management Service (MMS) environmental reviews [$2 million].  As you know, MMS is the agency which reviews and approves oil drilling permits.

The budget also proposes to cut 1,100 U.S. Coast Guard positions, in addition to ships, aircraft and helicopters [safety and security teams].”

The email proceeds to offer screen shot images from the budget which my technical prowess is not allowing me to transfer, but which indeed read:

·        The FY 2011 President’s Budget requests $9.86 billion for the Coast Guard - which is a 0.24% decrease from the FY 2010 enacted level of $9.88 billion.

·        Coast Guard asset cuts include decommissioning 4 of the service’s largest cutters; removing 5 HH-65 helicopters from service; eliminating 5 of 12 Maritime Safety and Security Teams; and reassigning 4 HH-60 helicopters & eliminating their work in drug law enforcement and anti-terrorism response.

All while massively expanding government. This must be Bush’s fault. You can read it all here.

Hey, look you guys! Of course Obama has to cut the Coast Guard! How else can he pay for Health care for illegals and lazy-ass Americans and give the unions and Goldman Sachs billions and bailout Detroit! Gawd! Quit complaining! Who needs the Coast Guard?!

The 1100 Coast Guard positions are being transferred instead to the Department of Education.

Striking while the iron is hot our fearless leader cuts the area where if maybe he had pushed them a little harder to do their jobs maybe some of this problem could have been lessened. I am curious how they would justify these cuts in the current environment? I await the severe cuts in UE insurance and welfare benefits...should be a long wait.

Well, of course that's what he's done.

This is a no-brainer. It's Obama's way.

What proportion of the Coast Guard do you imagine voted for Obama--or, more relevant, would vote for him next time?

What percentage of the people who will consume the now freed up Coast Guard budget will vote for Obama next time? ~100%? That's my guess.

He may be incompetent, but he's not stupid. Take money from the people who are less likely to support you (even if they, like the Coast Guard, protect our nation's sea borders and environment) and give it to the people who are more likely to vote for you (even if they are the least productive--arguably negatively productive--members of the society you're reputedly the leader of).

Simple Obamath.
