We are CONSERVATIVES - not Republicans. If Kasich sold us out in 1994 he should pay a price. Gun control is a huge issue to Conservatives. Maybe Republicans will think twice before turning into RINO's on key votes - like the Second Amendment.
Richard Stewart | 10.30.10 @ 3:59PM
I will not be voting for Kasich, I DO remember the rage I felt for a decade of big government, anti-gun, and anti-liberty legislation he not only voted for BUT helped broker a deal to more republicans online to vote for the 1994 AWB. He does not have my vote for certain. Ohio has had a growth in MORE gun related freedoms as of late, not less, including broader liberties on Conceal Carry. Strickland gets my vote.
David H| 6.14.10 @ 1:34PM
So it would be better for Ohio if Strickland won?
Robert Pinkerton| 6.14.10 @ 3:19PM
Yes, David H., I believe it would indeed be better for my State if Mr. Strickland were returned for another term.
The common citizen's RIGHT to arms is a political coal-mine canary. Abrogation thereof by any State is a harbinger of indecent designs on citizens' other liberties. More practically, it is all too often the citizen's first line of defense against interpersonal criminal aggression. (The law can only respond after the fact of an offense, which is as it should be, which means that its effect is less to none upon would-be perps who think they can outsmart the processes of the law. Hoewver, if a declared would-be armed or strongarm robber lies dead on the floor of his intended victim's shop, where is the wrong? If a declared would-be rapist lies dead at his intended victim's feet, where is the wrong?)
Scott Perrine| 6.14.10 @ 3:22PM
Kasich talks a lot now about his "mistake" in voting for the Clinton gun ban. However, when addressing the Buckeye Firearms Association he responds to a question about that vote the he believed that it would have lowered crime rates, and when it did not have that effect, he realized he made a mistake. He still does not believe that voting against the second amendment in and of itself is a mistake. That tells me, if he is presented with a bill that "will lower crime" he will gladly sign it, regardless of the effect it will have on Ohio gun owners. Governor Strickland is Pro-Gun and Pro-Life, and is going after budget cuts as aggressively as any Republican I have seen. So yes, I believe Ted is a far better choice than Kasich. (In the interests of full disclosure I am the NRA OH 16th distict Election Volunteer Coordinator.)

I am a card carrying member of the NRA. Assault rifle bans from 1994 are not high on my list now. Having money and keeping income and my job are however. In case you guys missed the last few years...or just don't live in the state let me inform you. Things suck and are getting much worse. We still have no budget that was due in may, and we have lost over 400k jobs. Strickland has no answers other than a high speed rail, and is in favor of cap and trade. Instead of talking about some bill from 1994, my fellow citizens of Ohio should worry about having discretionary income to even be able to even buy guns.
TomP| 6.14.10 @ 3:50PM
I'm afraid I have to disagree with Mr. Perrin and Mr. Pinkerton, despite the vote Kasich would be a far better Governor than Strickland. Strickland is so far in the Obama pocket that I wouldn't be at all surprised if he were to nullify the state constitution and let Washington take over the rest of the state, as it has the GM factories, the public school system etc. Nope, Strickland has to go.
Syd| 6.14.10 @ 9:40PM
Ted Strickland and his liberal friends have not been supportive of the NRA in the past and they won't be in the future. Strickland has been wishy-washy (at best) on guns and his running mate is on-record as against guns. I think that the NRA got this one wrong. Kasich owns a gun and has been a NRA supporter for years. Check his quotes on the '94 vote and give him another look. www.kasichforohio.com/2ndamendment
Steve| 6.15.10 @ 7:52AM
"Wishy-washy (at best)"? Ted Strickland was the first Ohio governor with the guts to sign concealed carry legislation (previous R gov vetoed it then the Ohio legislature overrode his veto) and he fought for and signed the Castle Doctrine into Ohio law. Personally, I think even more important is where Strickland comes from - check HIS quotes and you'll find he grew up hunting in rural Appalachian Ohio, where it is not uncommon for a young man to start hunting with his father in his early teens. Strickland is our guy and we should stand with him.
conservativefirst| 6.15.10 @ 1:24PM
This adds to the confusion about Kasich. Is he a RINO or not? First he gets a job a Lehman Brothers with really no prior experience, a fat, cushy job. Looks like an insider to me. Now the NRA refuses to endorse him because he voted for a gun ban. Hmm, another stupid RINO. I may stay home on this one, but Strickland is so bad, it's painful.
Rich| 6.15.10 @ 7:22PM
I have voted for ONE democrat, and Strickland will be the second. Kasich is a bazilionair, I HATE that he voted for NAFTA. I HATE that he was with Lehman, I just don't trust the guy, and Im a SEVERE CONSERVATIVE. I feel that Ted is HONEST and votes accordingly. If I disagree with him at least I know HE'S VOTING HIS CONSCIENCE and not his politics.
Dan Brown| 6.16.10 @ 11:29PM
I would like to preface my comments by saying that I don't really care for Kasich and I wish the powers that be would have fielded a better candidate on the Republican ticket.
Having said that, yeah, Strickland may have a better score by some obscure measure. Problem is, there are a lot more reasons why not to vote for Strickland that have nothing to do with gun rights. When I was a union member, I was always encouraged to vote Democratic because it was good for the Teamsters, I always responded that yes, Dems are good for unions but terrible for the company that signs my pay check.
I hope that people will not become "single issue" voters and instead cast a ballot for the candidate who has thew most to offer over a broad spectrum of issues.
Scott Perrine| 6.17.10 @ 12:46AM
I am as disappointed as most conservatives at the candidate supplied by the Republican side. But to Mr. Brown's concern over not looking at a single issue most conservatives can also support Strickland's pro-life position along with his stellar pro-gun position. It seems to me that Kasich is very close to a blue blood country club Republican (see TAFT), and I won't shed a tear not pulling the lever for that type of candidate. As far as Kasich's anti-gun votes I have to apply the old maxim, " Trick me once, shame on you. Trick me twice, shame on me!" I for one hope gun owners learn from history and keep a pro-gun man in the governors mansion.

National Rifle Association:
Thank you very much for NOT endorsing John Kasich for Governor of Ohio.
I used to be a member of the NRA and I will be renewing my membership because the NRA has demonstrated that it also understands that John Kasich does NOT practice what he preaches and is NOT fit to be Governor of Ohio.
We learned that John has NO “courage” and does NOT “Stand For Something” even in regard to his very own children and thousands of others (including ours) who were deliberately put at “risk” with repeat child molesters by the administrators at a private “Christian” school while those administrators and their attorney deceived and defrauded we parents about it. John Kasich actually still sends his daughters to that private school where the administrators remain in power, remain as a serious threat to unsuspecting consumers, and remain as horrible examples to the students on how to treat your business customers and fellow man.
Please refer to the Internet Web Site www.NotKasich.com for the overwhelming and irrefutable evidence.
Thank you

Getting into this very late, as using the the dates of other posts an example of time.
I don't really follow what publication trumpets what view point, so I a FNG to all this. Just doing my own research ahead of an election.
My question is how does any Democrat, and lets be honest OK, meaning liberal, support any measure of gun ownership?
We used to say in my time in The Corps, politicians only want to control the guns they don't. Saw it in many places around the world.
Politicians loves folks having firearms, as long as they control those who do.
Bill| 10.2.10 @ 5:00PM
I'm a conservative republican and this is a touhg one for me. I also doubt if I can vote for DeWhine as AG. He is definitely a RINO.
