How many tens of millions of people does a communist dictator have to murder before his groupies abandon him? Apparently a lot. At least for Joan Hinton tens of millions of dead weren’t enough for her to lose her affection for Mao Zedong, one of history’s great mass murderers.
Reports an obituary for the Washington Post yesterday:
Joan Hinton, a onetime prep school student and ski instructor who worked on the Manhattan Project to build an atomic bomb during World War II, then moved to China and spent the rest of her life as a devoted follower of Mao Zedong, died June 8 at a hospital in Beijing. Her son said she had an abdominal aneurysm. She was 88.
In 1948, Ms. Hinton took the dramatic step of following her brother to China just as the country was in the throes of the Communist revolution led by Mao. Ms. Hinton, who witnessed the first atomic bomb explosion in 1945, was upset when nuclear energy was used to annihilate much of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the waning days of World War II. She renounced the violent use of atomic energy and moved to China, where she thought an ideal socialist state would emerge based on Mao’s teachings.

Nonetheless, Ms. Hinton remained an ardent supporter of Mao, the Chinese Communist leader who controlled the country from 1949 until he died in 1976. Even after Mao’s Cultural Revolution reshaped Chinese society by force, leaving tens of millions of people dead in ideological purges, Ms. Hinton’s loyalty was undiminished.
“I was 100 percent behind everything that happened in the Cultural Revolution,” she said in 2008, long after most Chinese people had abandoned Maoist beliefs. “He was a terrific person, and he liberated all the people — he was not a monster at all.”
Too bad. As a Westerner, she could easily have been targeted in the Cultural Revolution. She might have had a different opinion if she had encountered its “business end,” so to speak.
Normally I would say “rest in peace.” But if tens of millions of deaths couldn’t shake her faith in Communism, then she needs a little helpful “reeducation,” wherever she has ended up.

The "education" that leads to individuals accepting the propaganda begins in pre-school and moves on after that. Also the MSM makes its contributioin. Then there is the "environmental movement" etc.
Aside from changing the Political landscape there is a need to challenge the idea of the MSM, and the "environmental" movement.
To some degree Obama himself is the best advertisement against Communism. But a lot more needs to be done on the very local level such as school board elections,city councils and other such areas.

It is of interest to follow the development or progression in the names that the mass murderers give themselves over the years. They started in the 1920 as communists; then after the Hitler-Stalin pact in 1939 the same bunch became socialists; after the poverty of socialism became a widespread knowledge they converted into liberals; when that transformed into drugs and sex we have now progressives. Absolutely, Doug Bandow! Fear and rejection are the acceptable responses to Maoism, particularly for people who spent time in China (or the American communist movement) in the 1940s. After all, such people would be able to quickly move past their memories of China under Japanese occupation and Chiang Kai-shek's form of dictatorship to realize that the alternative to Maoism was, well, a kind of democratic utopia such as was experienced in South Korea and Taiwan in the 1960s.
When is the American conservative movement going to _stand up_ (oh wait, that's a Mao quote from 1949....I'm open to suggestions) to make Jung Chang's _Mao: The Unknown Story_ (a virtually perfect text without a single factual flaw, since its every page breathes with hatred of Chairman Mao) mandatory reading in all high school classrooms?
After all, three or four left-wing professors in the United States may still be assigning brother William Hinton's immense commie dissertation on "land reform", _Fanshen_, a text which was immediately published in the freedom-loving USA in spite of the fact that Hinton's personal experiences in a Chinese village failed to expose the slaughter of 700,000 peace-loving landlords which was all certainly going on underneath his own farm-loving nose. A short slap of an obituary isn't going to do the trick! What we need is a full investigation of this matter of Hinton's deep and pervasive influence on the hundreds of American university students who have been exposed to this non-Tweetable contagion. I, for one, will be contacting my Senators immediately.
