I'd say it's because the "moderates" know two things. First, they know that we're in the mess that we're in from constantly halving the baby. They know that we're where we are because when presented with a choice the politicians have said "both!!". Second, they know that we won't get out of the mess that we're in by following the same policy. They're demanding leadership and, whatever else it may be, moderation is not leadership.
We're in a hole, we want to get out... we have three options:
Conservative option: stop digging, climb out
Liberal option: keep digging, we'll exit at China
Moderate option: dig a bit slower
The moderate option is not an option.

Moderates are the people who can't make up their minds about where they stand, They straddle the fence and say their neutral, when there is no neutral. Moderate is really what Liberals like to say that they are.
When explained to an honest person, the real choices involved, they will usually come around, and start thinking straight and realize that what they are is conservative. Either that, or become a full fledged communist. There really isn't any in between. We have 2 choices in a 2 party system. republican or Democrat. We all know the third party thing doesn't work.
No one WANTS semi-conservatives, we all want super duper conservatives. So, we get out there and back these guys (and gals) who are running as conservatives in the party, early on. Make sure they get nominated and then elected. It takes work and commitment. There's just no other way!
