The Spectacle Blog

Ever since the MSNBC host's denunciation of a Tim James TV ad catapulted James to superstar status in the Alabama GOP gubernatorial primary, the Rachel Maddow Threshold (RMT) has become the new gold standard in conservative campaign advertising.

In one of the delicious ironies of the Obama Age, Republican consultants are conspiring feverishly to produce TV commercials that exceed the RMT and get their candidates condemned on the Liberal Network No One Ever Watches.

All of which is to explain why Dale Peterson is now odds-on favorite to become the nation's most famous candidate for state agriculture commissioner. At the gossip site Gawker, Adrien Chen says: "This spot . . . makes James look like a gay Commie terrorist."

If Maddow doesn't denounce this one by Thursday, I owe somebody in Huntsville a case of beer.

DAMN! I think we found our 2012 presidential candidate. I love the Winchester at the end LOL!

Alan Brooks| 5.17.10 @ 10:33AM

"I think we found our 2012 presidential candidate."

Noted you wrote "candidate", not "winner".

bonncaruso| 5.17.10 @ 1:45PM

Indeed. Candidate. The GOP had better enjoy 2010, because it is heading for a pasting in November of 2012.

Nobama| 5.17.10 @ 3:49PM

Keep telling yourself that, libtard. In the meantime, we're going to do all we can to strangle BozObama's agenda for the next two years! Enjoy.

Susan| 5.22.10 @ 7:33AM

Keep strangling that agenda with both hands. The American people know who is working for them, and who is working to try desperately to get elected. The chickens will come home to roost, and the right better get used to seeing Democrats in power, because if your best is Rand Paul and Sarah Palin, you will pick up NO seats, let alone a majority. Enjoy.

Bob Miller| 5.17.10 @ 7:17PM

I believe you have to become a "candidate" before you become a "winner." Discussion continues about which comes first "chicken" or "egg."

"Who on Earth would support such a dummy, and why?"-Dale Peterson.

I think that horse thought Dale was going to shoot him right then and there, for a few seconds. He was looking rather nervous to me, maybe because he's one of those thugs and criminals that Dale was talking about? Who knows!!

I wish I lived in Alabama, so I could vote for this guy, he reminds me of John Wayne!! I've been a Farmer, a Business Man, a Cop, a Marine during Vietnam, a trained Winchester sniper, a NASCAR Driver, and I worked at a factory, that turned perfectly healthy horses into American made glue, what's not to like about me?

Jamie| 5.16.10 @ 6:13PM

Semper fi!!

Nobama| 5.16.10 @ 7:06PM

Overbite, Tingles and Madcow are going to pee their pants when they see this little spot.

Love it!

Nick| 5.16.10 @ 8:02PM

Thanks a lot, Mr. McCain!

Now, I'm going to be watching Wesley Crusher....er....I mean Rachel Madcow all week, just to see if she mentions this ad.

I'll just be too curious!

Awesome| 5.16.10 @ 9:08PM

Don't disparage Dale Peterson by comparing him with Tim James, whose corrupt bargain with the biggest Democrat interest group in the state would make Arlen Specter blush.

Spicy Joker| 5.16.10 @ 11:12PM

Dale Peterson for President in '12.

Reginald Westman| 5.17.10 @ 12:01AM

Awesome, you should elaborate on your claim about Tim James' corrupt bargain and present some evidence on it. Go back to Byrneland.

Richard Baker| 5.17.10 @ 7:37AM

Amazing. There are Americans left and one of them is in Alabama. Great ad. Let Maddow stew on her own juices.

Ken (Old Texican)| 5.17.10 @ 8:28AM

Mr. McCain,

Thank you for that. I needed a pick-me-up this morning. I would be willing to bet my britches that Mr. Peterson is an "oath keeper". (check their web site)

How many vets just like him are thinking and saying the same things across this country?

Deborah D| 5.17.10 @ 9:35AM

I love this guy! A real human being running for office. God love him!! Good luck, Mr. Peterson!!

Paul Lynde| 5.17.10 @ 9:39AM

Who is Rachel Maddow? Keith Olbermann without make-up. Or vice-versa. Either way its indecent.

AlabamaBoy| 5.17.10 @ 10:07AM

Awesome,

Why are you repeating the lies of a known liar regarding Tim James? Simply because Byrne says something doesn't make it so.

In fact, quite the opposite. Byrne calls himself a conservative when he pushed for the largest tax increase in Alabama history.

matthew s harrison| 5.17.10 @ 10:28AM

Juxtapose that former marine to the late John Murtha-nothing more needs to be said.

Greg| 5.17.10 @ 1:04PM

I've got a tingle running up my leg...

Wish I could vote for this guy...

Problems with a Comprehensive Immigration Bill

There are some Americans who simply don’t like those “brown” skinned people to be increasing in numbers. That feeling or point of view is clearly racist; an atavistic or primitive, mindless way of thinking. And there are those who don’t appreciate those people who are speaking a different language and listening to a different kind of music; a xenophobic who can’t bear the thought of a different culture spreading throughout the Unites States. Latinos have cause to believe they are the object of racial prejudice, however that important view point is drowning out a far more important problem; overpopulation.

Overpopulation is inextricably intertwined with immigrations throughout the world. The United States is beginning to run low on available resources be they renewable or non-renewable. It does not matter from which country or continent immigrants and invaders are coming, they all increase our population-to-resource ratio and add to the deterioration of the environment. We have been and are still going to war to protect our gluttony for oil. Energy and water are becoming reduced per person. Both electrical and water agencies are requesting us to use less while charging higher rates. In my community, the water company was threatening to cut off water to those who use excessive amounts, meanwhile the city and county supervisors are granting permits to contractors and developers to build more and more homes! The recently widened freeway (from four to six lanes) now relieves traffic congestion, but in the near future as population increases, this new six lane freeway will be as crowded as ever. Meanwhile significantly more smog will fill the air.

Most people simply cannot grasp the idea of explosive population growth. “Look at all the empty space” they say. Understandably, but unfortunately, they confuse density with carrying capacity. Hong Kong has the highest density of any city in the world, yet it seems to survive. The Netherlands has one of the highest densities of any country in the world, yet the Dutch are not only surviving but have a very reasonable standard of living. So what is the big deal? The reality is that Hong Kong and the Netherlands can only survive if their imports greatly exceed their exports. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, it takes 0.625 acres of fertile and well watered soil to support each person at the lowest level of subsistence. It does not matter if the entire world’s population is crowded into the state of Texas or spread evenly across the earth’s surface. It still requires 0.625 acres to support each and every human being at the lowest level of subsistence.

There are many of us who are not racists, xenophobes or hate mongers but see a disastrous increase in the world’s human population. No amount of technological improvement can indefinitely supply an exponentially increasing population even with the barest necessities of life. And that applies to the whole world including the United States; absolutely nothing can stop the impending world disaster that is due to the increase in population that is now doubling every 40 years. In the not so distant future, Mexicans will find that the “American Dream” has turned into another Mexican tragedy without a stop to population growth. I believe that a multiethnic and mixed racial society is rich because of its diversity and benefits from it. However, excessive growth in the population will nullify all those potential benefits in any society. There will be ever increasing divergence of the wealthy and the poor. More workers will require more resources but those resources are becoming less and less per person. Fewer resources and the resulting greater demand mean higher prices and greater poverty. No socialist or communist society can solve such a problem even with a draconian dictatorial government. There would be less and less freedom and still be ever more poverty.

There are four possible solutions that can solve the explosive population growth: (1) famine, (2) massive epidemics, (3) nuclear war, and (4) a combination of birth control along with education, particularly environmental education for both men and women. Which of these do you think is the most humane? Attempting to solve the problem by considering only birth control is futile. By means of education however, women would gain equality to men; socially, economically, politically as well as in the family. Having a good educational background (not religious indoctrination), women will refuse to be more than baby machines and instead will desire to contribute in many other ways towards society.

Passing a single integrated “comprehensive immigration bill” will be a failure. All that congress has to do is to refuse to appropriate money to finance an expensive and more secure border. Also a president, who needs the Latino vote, will not enforce laws preventing an open border. The political solution would be to pass one bill at a time and in this order: (1) First and foremost, arrest and fine any business owner or corporate leader who hires undocumented workers, for example 10% of the company net income. The second offense would result in a one year mandatory prison sentence and a felony conviction for the responsible people thereby removing their voting privileges. (2) Build not a single but three 16 foot high fences along the entire southern border. The three fences would be separated by a high speed four lane freeway for use by the border patrol, or if necessary the military as well. (3) Reverse the law that any child born in the United States becoming automatically a US citizen. That privilege should be given to a newborn when both their parents are already US citizens. (4) Arrest any individual from any country who does not have the proper authorization by the INS to be in the United Sates and deport them back to the country of origin. A second offense would result is a non-prison felony conviction and a repeat deportation. (5) Allow people of all nations (except those who have as their policy to attack or destroy us) the opportunity to go through the proper INS steps to gain citizenship. That would exclude all criminals who profit by illegal means. Such a system of laws would eliminate the racist targeting of dark skinned peoples for unwarranted searches and interrogations.

The United States simply cannot solve the internal problems of other nations, be they greed, corruption, or overpopulation. We have our own problems of that nature that must be corrected. The problems of other nations should be up the citizens of their country to solve their own problems. If anger and frustrations in any country due to these difficulties build to a point that they attack us, then we should respond with the full force of our military. Also the cost of the proposed triple fence-freeway along our southern border pales to insignificance when compared to the costs of mid east wars for oil and bailouts.

Nick| 5.18.10 @ 12:41AM

Dr. Brown,

Paul Ehrlich has been preaching the overpopulation/unsustainability claptrap for 50 years. His predictions (and others of his ilk) have always been wrong.

Also, you forgot to mention that contraception is intrinsically evil. It makes one's spouse a mere masturbatory tool, to be used for one's own pleasure. It denies the human dignity owed to one's spouse.

Promoting artificial birth-control always results in an increase in pregnancy, both in- and out-of-wedlock.

So, your solution is seriously flawed. And, it is flawed solution in search of a non-existant problem.

Nick| 5.18.10 @ 1:17AM

Oops! That should be: And, it is A flawed solution in search of a non-EXISTENT problem.

Nobama| 5.17.10 @ 9:59PM

Simply put: WE'RE BROKE! What the hell is wrong with people, anyway?
