Fiorina on Immigration

Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina caused a stir on Friday when she condemned a “racist tone” emerging in the immigration debate.

I also spoke to Fiorina on Friday – after the Politico interview took place, but before it was published – and brought up immigration.

By in large, Fiorina defended the Arizona law and called for tougher border security, but wouldn’t take a position on what to do with the millions of immigrants who are already here illegally.

“I think it is the height of hypocrisy for President Obama, Barbara Boxer, the Democrats to change the subject and say, ‘People in Arizona are terrible, and therefore we need comprehensive immigration reform,’” she said. “The assumption should be that it is the federal government’s responsibility to secure the border. They have failed in that responsibility. They do not need one new piece of legislation to secure the border. They just need to do it.”

She went on to say that, “I think we have to keep the subject on, ‘What is the federal government’s job?’ And the federal government’s job on immigration is two-fold. One is secure the border. And two, have a temporary worker program that works. And the federal government is doing neither one.”

Asked about what she would do with those already here illegally if the border were secured, she was evasive.

“I don’t think voters are going to tolerate a discussion of what we’re going to do next until we do what actually has to be done, period,” she said. “So I’m not prepared to even discuss what we do next.”

She did, however, say that she could not vote for a comprehensive bill along the lines of McCain-Kennedy.

And she defended the new law in Arizona.

“I support Arizona’s efforts to protect its citizens,” she told me. “They’ve been put in an untenable situation and that law is a reflection of their frustration and their fear and it was passed because of the federal government’s unwillingness and inability to do its job.”

Asked about some of the civil liberties issues critics had raised about the ability of law enforcement to demand papers from citizens, she said such attacks on the law were overblown.

“You can create all kinds of scary stories about what might happen, but that isn’t how the law is written,” she said. “The law does not provide the opportunity to simply ask someone for their papers for no reason. “

Overall, Fiorina’s comments on immigration reflect the political position in which she finds herself. She wants to win a Senate seat in a very Democratic state with a huge Hispanic population. But before she gets a chance, she has to win over conservatives to get the Republican nomination. Border security is a safe position that most people say they support. But handling the status of those already here illegally is much thornier and more contentious issue.

Hispanics (a made up political term) who are citizens are Americans, are they not? Do they not want law and order? Do they expect their own cousins to be allowed to break SEVERAL laws - illegal entry, ID theft, social security number theft, driving without a license, income tax evasion, etc?

Laws are for Gringos but not the "noble" Latino?

Is the United States entitled to determine who can enter, in what numbers and under what terms and to enforce the laws which protect it’s sovereignty or does the United States simply exist as a place for half the world to come and “work hard”?

The real question is: does every latino in Mexico and Central America, have a God given right to "migrate" to the USA?

I say no. I say deport all illegals and LOWER LEGAL immigration for a period of ten years or so. Re-balance the scales.

Grzmlyk| 5.3.10 @ 4:16PM

BETW, obviously you are cruel and heartless. And a bigot. And, no doubt, a homophobe.

Oh, why is the right wing so cruel as to want to enforce the law???

Just so you hate mongers know, anybody who wants to come to America ought to be allowed; the moment their feet hit American soil, they are citizens.

You act as if America were a sovereign nation with its own laws. Duh. We are all citizens of the world now, you troglodyte, and we have to spend the next century at least atoning for the sins of this evil, evil country.

Besides, as long as "Hispanics" (and you make a great point about the origin of the term) are future voters, Democrats - and all too many Republicans - say, "come one, come all!"

So what if the country is ruined in the process? Nobody cares; the political class stays in power by harnessing a new class of welfare dependents, and wealthy white Americans who are safely ensconced in their mansions in L.A. and their Brownstones in Manhattan get to feel good about themselves. It's win-win for the elites!

Lullaby's, Legends and Lies| 5.3.10 @ 8:55PM

I thought I caught you this time for sure, making up a word, that couldn't possibly be a real word. But damn, if I didn't find it in the dictionary, when I checked.

Troglodyte-a person who lived in a cave, a hermit, a person who is regarded as being deliberately ignorant of old-fashioned. Sounds kind of like me, except for the cave part?

I'll get you yet!!

So Grzmlyk? Where you drinking you sarcastic juice again today? I remember back in the day, when you used to play it straight down the line, Mr Serious, at all times!! But now, you're all over the place, depending on the article. Keep it up, I need a good laugh!!

Mars1| 5.26.10 @ 11:08PM

Good point, only that obviously many people care (misdirected or not). From Mars, where I am from, we care, that is why we came to study your brutish ways. Too many wars to be too concerned about your southern pests, or neighbors, which ever you prefer, who have always partnered with you through thick and thin, mostly by their exploitation and taking of their lands.

We will wait until you and your planet annihilate your species, as a concerted effort. We don't even need to show off our own technology; no need at all. We will wait to make friends with whoever (evolutionary miracle) survives. There will be many. For this, we are pleased to know.

Over one trillion dollars spent on bombs overseas with another one trillion spent on corporate thieves, and all they can scream about is build that wall! For all you know, your Government may be closing you all in for one great experiment. Wait and see! Something to the North may happen whereby many might need to go south (Yellowstone supervolcano), but who knows? Maybe Big Brother is really just setting everyone up with all this misdirected sentiment, so they can require everyone to State issued ID scans, while it will get harder and harder to run and hide, if need be?

America's own iron curtain has risen. 911 was lost through some underhand. Mexican people all over America's prisons... while Mexican trucks, which are really American trucks, are banned.

Who do you think built your great country? Illegals all through out time. If you eat fruit, or salad, who pray tell do you think picked for your convenience? Who do you think built the railroads? Illegals who were later granted amnesty, due to their contributions. America is built on the backs (wet or not) of illegal immigrants, starting with the European invasion.

The troglodyte by the way, knows not what to say, feeling insecure with placement in such a rich and diverse world. Unfortunately, it is that spirit which condemns your society to misery. Not knowing America to be like The Kings of The World, they are very quickly revealing her naughty little secrets at the expense of all others. America is built by the little guys, which in turn is to be enjoyed by the bigger ones. The trog must be living beyond means, and obviously hasn't experienced your American Dream. :)

Mars1| 5.26.10 @ 10:37PM

Re-balance the scales? Which scales? The ones that allowed for millions of Europeans to come here without documents, who mowed over almost every last trace of the Natives, their homes and their languages. This by the way was no easy feat, lasting more than two centuries. All those poor Native children all retrained into English after the genocides; still stuck on reservations.

What, God forbid, scales are you trying to balance? Oh, maybe you mean when the eminent domain spirit swept the plains of the southwest, waging a war against Mexico for half her lands, just as she was recovering from invasions from Spain and others who wanted to take her lands as well. We could have gone farther south and taken the entire country, but really, how many of Mexican descent presidents would we have had by now, when you consider the demographics/populations shift from majority European stock to majority Mexican?

Unlike most other Latin American countries, whoever signed away their land for a trite 10 million dollars at gunpoint, also said it was the poor Mexicans INALIENABLE right to be in these lands once owned by Mexico.

Thank Googies I'm from Mars, so I really don't give a rats tail; only in truth of your history do I seek to know your kind.

By the way, Good luck with that horrible oil spill, which I am sure both Mexico and Cuba are not too happy about. Thank goodness BP has taken the initiative to compensate even though they had a 74 million dollar cap on their liability. They are already hiring Mexicans (hard workers) to help with the clean up. Hopefully though, they won't try to stiff them (after luring them for work in Mexican Newspaper ads) and call for them to be deported before they pay them, like we have done here so many times, again and again!

Smile! :)

Ben Bumgardner| 5.3.10 @ 3:02PM

I think Carly played it well here. She quite rightly criticized the hypocrisy of Obama and supported Arizona's right to enforce the law, but supported immigration reform in principle.

Holdmynose| 5.3.10 @ 3:18PM

Since slavery is illegal, we need the next best thing, an influx of people that can be taken advantage of. Once legal with "reform" mexicans will have protections. We will need to have a whole new crop of undocumented's to clean our toilets on the cheap. This is why the Reagan amnesty increased illegal immigration and why the borders aren't closed.

Mars1| 5.26.10 @ 11:10PM

Pretty darn close!

gsr| 5.3.10 @ 3:34PM

Holdmynose - the only problem with your sarcastic theory is, such occupations as janitor, maid, lawn-mower, landscaper, etc. are mostly, already filled with Americans or legal aliens. Even in fruit/vegetable picking, illegals are only a percentage.

Mexico is the source of the real problem here, chronically corrupt Mexico - decade after decade, and still they can't generate enough jobs. Plus racism. Mexican racism. Notice almost all Mexicans that "migrate" to the USA are very dark skinned, Mexican-Indians, not the light skinned beauties you see on Univision and Telemundo.

The light skinned Mexicans (descendants of the Spanish), are exporting their "less refined" countrymen.

Holdmynose| 5.3.10 @ 4:01PM

What Reagan did was allow newly legal immigrants to own the businesses that you enumerated, we have mexican restaurants everywhere for instance then some owners import their illegal countrymen to work for them.

Other than that point I agree with you 100%

Sans fence, what to do.

Mars!| 5.26.10 @ 11:20PM

Too lopsided. Their is racism everywhere, but in Mexico, they all mix with each other now a days, mostly. Those light skinned ones are mixed with the dark skinned ones; yet since the darkies are the majority, they are everywhere, being somewhat nomadic by nature. In other words, since Mexico's government is corrupt, as is every other country under your sky, they are also a poor country, so many people decide to come north for a better life... just like the pilgrims way back when.

Speaking of corruption, where there is more money, you are bound to find the greatest corruption, is a lesson we are taught in our Martian studies of your planet, grade one.

Have a great time when the walls come tumbling down! Smile through it, and keep the faith that evolution is real and that you will evolve! :)

gsr| 5.3.10 @ 4:39PM

1) We do need a serious 2 or 3 layer fence. 2) We do need to talk to Mexico and tell them in no uncertain terms, we're not going to accept half of their population. 3) We deport the more hardened criminals among the illegals (which is not a small number). 4) By enforcing existing laws, many will self-deport. We have high unemployment, that even the Barry O-Bozo adminstration predicts will last for several years. We don't need to import 100,000 people per month (legal & illegal). Enforce the law and the problem will shrink from a crisis to nuisance.

Flee| 5.4.10 @ 1:26AM

Any illegal alien should be returned to their homeland if found. Any offspring they have is the fruit of ill-gotten gains and should be nullified as citizens. US is one of the only countries in the world that rewards criminal behavior with citizenship. It should stop. Services should stop. Education should stop. You will see the flow home and those jobs they work will be taken by those here that would like to work rather than be on the dole. We used to perform all of these tasks before aliens invaded. We can do them again.

Mars1| 5.26.10 @ 11:42PM

Because the US is one of the only countries that got what she got through ill gotten gains. The alien Euros invaded the Natives. Hypocrite. :)

Mars!| 5.26.10 @ 11:37PM

Unfortunately, your population is getting older. Soon, you will be less efficient, unless of course, you turn into machines, which is the plan, we understand.

The time is now to decide on what to do without an angry eye at those you hate (Mexicans). After all is said and done, you will decide whether or not Mexico serves any purpose for your imperious ways. Most likely (from what we are hearing) your diplomacy will end, and you will decide to wage war, both politically (as what is now happening) and physically (happening too). Go ahead, you are all at threat stage, is that right? This is worse than what the Taliban wants to do against you, as to why one trillion and counting of your hard earned money has evaporated in the Afghan fields, where children's blood infests the flowers of America's addiction.

Send the message clear, that America is at WAR against Mexico, yet again, and may go against all Genevan treaties, to gain new lands for the Empire which will keep striking back, until wars and oil leaks and pollution and expoited resources and people and corruption are won over. Truly, a monster chasing her own tail into darkness, most clear. :) Our plan is working wonderfully!

Chris| 5.3.10 @ 4:48PM

"And the federal government’s job on immigration is two-fold. One is secure the border. And two, have a temporary worker program that works."

She got half of it. The first part is correct. The second part is to insure that immigration benefits the country and its citizens. It's not to make sure that everyone who wants to work here can.

Red Phillips | 5.3.10 @ 5:19PM

"but supported immigration reform in principle"

In other words she left the door open for amnesty. Just what the Republican primary voters in CA want to hear.

Mary| 5.4.10 @ 10:22AM

Well, it was Fiorina, when she was at HP, who sneered at US citizen workers, that they no longer had any right to tech jobs in their own country. That about summed it up for me, and when Fiorina has the gall to ask for our votes, I laughed. I wouldn't vote for this woman for dog catcher. Her advocacy for more visas all the time, helped bring that Faisal Shahzad, who attempted to blow up a car and kill citizens in Times Square, into our country. In case you haven't heard, Shahzad came here on a visa, one of the 190,000 who are brought to the US per month, and we don't know how many more like him have taken advantage of corrupt politicians like Fiorina's greed and avarice. How many of them are privy to government secrets that they can and do sell on the open market to the highest bidder. Fiorina views this election as a conduit to expanded power to exploit, and more wealth. We need to elect an American citizen, who loves the constitution, bill of rights and respects the American citizenry.

Mars!| 5.26.10 @ 11:53PM

America then needs to cut off all ties with foreign/alien governments, and just pander to the hick mentality, is that it? Oh, sure America will remain great just as long as you stop all trade with the Chinese, too, who stole all your secrets (consumer technology) as well as military ones. Better yet, stop Israel from taking all those billions every year from America's tax system for so called aid. Stop funding the bloody wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, soon to be Pakistan and Iran. Good idea. Shrink America, and put her in her place... but first get rid of them wet backs! Get them out of your fields, get them out of your country! Get them out of your places of business! Send bombs! Destroy!

We wait for the showdown, so that we might win your planet. Soon, we will allow for Katla to erupt, even as your global warming is about to stir the wind beasts from their cages! :)

DAC| 5.3.10 @ 5:25PM

A president who despises his own country isn't going to bother securing its borders; he's too busy licking the toe-jam of foreign enemies.
After 2012, a new president could: 1) get serious about border enforcement (that means a lot of deaths, which we'd have to tolerate); 2) a revised "Bracero" program (the farm-based guest worker program that existed in the 1950s and 1960s, shut down by the Cesar Chavez unions); 3) expansion of the "eVerify" system. If Congress were to also legislate away any/all federal benefits for illegal aliens, and key states (e.g., Texas) followed suit for state benefits, what might result?
Willing workers connected with willing employers, with those workers incentivized not to stay and create metastasizing ghettos, but to go home, stay within the law, and get on the path to resident alien or legal citizenship. Notice I say willing workers, not willing welfare parasites. Those would, ideally, cease to exist.
Chances of the above occurring, even if conservatives (notice, not necessarily Republicans) sweep the 2010 and 2012 elections? Near zero. But even tiny steps in these directions would help.

Mars1| 5.27.10 @ 12:03AM

The Braceros were all exploited and eventually stiffed of their pay, then deported along with American citizens of Mexican ancestry in what is known as the 'Repatriation' because the euro stock got all flipped out then too, blaming everyone but themselves for their misery of blind, anything goes economics. They decided to repatriate over a million natural born American citizens, rounding them up on Ash wednesday and other like church services. Mainly the men of the house were taken, while their children languished from this shameful act for generations to come. Their is a book written by Kevin R. Johnson about all of this. Your ignorance of historical facts is not surprising, you brutes. Maybe no one will notice, like we Martians have, but then again, what do you think?

jppj| 5.3.10 @ 6:13PM

Canada uses temporary workers on temporary visas but they enforce their laws: the "temp" must go home after his visa expires. If the "temp" has a baby while in Canada, that is a condition for termination of their visa and they are sent home. No excuses.

A temporary worker is NOT an immigrant. In the USA, immigration is a racket, a big business. Hustling to bring more, more and more people and their whole family of relatives, in fact, their whole villages to this country. It must stop or at least, greatly reduced.

Mars!| 5.27.10 @ 12:05AM

Canada also genocided most of their Native people as well. Why not follows Hitler's lead and just start a war already!

Prudence| 5.3.10 @ 9:40PM

It's a no-brainer. Federal law already requires proof of legal status of immigrants; being illegally in any country that I know of, is illegal -- so what makes anyone think the US has "selective law enforcement". Ridiculous! Anyone not supporting enforcement of laws is supporting criminality! -- including the dysfunctional federal government law enforcement agencies; they should be compensating the states for the costs involved in taking care of the US government law enforcement responsibilities.

Mars1| 5.27.10 @ 12:09AM

WAR! WAR! WAR! Get the tribunals organized! Bring it on! Hate! Destroy! You have the weapons of mass destruction! Do it!

We wait. :)

You keep saying we pay them cheap to clean our toilets. If the hotels and etc pay better than minimum wage ,I clean the toilet . They govt. take money from my retirement and your paycheck to pay for the ilegals' healthcare, educ. food ,sect.8 housing, free baby sitting so they can go to school. Do you get a refund.? I don't. I still have to pay some more @ tax time. After work have you been to the grocery store and saw a family that has two cart full of groceries using their food stamps and welfare check and no ID. Tell me how you feel. My kids had student loans and I had a parent loan so they can go to college.
They get pell grant and in state tuition and Calworks. I pay for longterm care and they don't.
If they crossed the line in China, Kirea, Iran you know what will happen. Other countries do it why can't we. The federal law needs to be enforced. Arizoona is asking for help . Bless the Arizona governor. She has the guts .Arizaona is bankrupt
like California.

Mars1| 5.27.10 @ 12:20AM

Those who have foodstamps are mostly, with little exception, legal citizens, lazy or not. They are the ones who gave up on the American dream many moons ago, when they smelled your many shades of racism, like foul farts in the air that never go anywhere.

Most 'illegals' who come to America can not get a tax refund or collect on the SS they pay into. true they have medical (ER), which some don't pay, but that happens everywhere. You can not honestly blame the 'illegals' for all of your miseries, can you? That only means, your American dream is no more. Unlike Buddha who stepped outside the realms of his royalty to ponder the suffering of his world, you are starting to see the reality of why your country rose to such heights; only now slowly losing her might. She sat on the backs of the genocided Natives while expoiting Africans, Chinese and of course, Mexicans! Keep up the perfect ignorance, for don't you know, this is how things are lost!

:)

Mars1, great writing, entertaining, illegals should be x-ported back to Mexico. Also the illegal Chinese to China . There is not much mentioned about the
illegal Chinese. If 187 would have been carried out in Calif. in the 80's we would not be having this this conversation. Mars you will enjoy the legalization of pot. Keep smoking, and reading your lefty books. Its cool, the corruption goes both ways.
