Justice Stevens to Retire

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has announced that he will retire this summer, once the current court session is over, the Associated Press reports.

While Obama’s replacement may not tilt the balance of the court, it would make the liberal wing a lot younger, with Stevens about to hit 90.

Politically speaking, it sets up what could be a brutal election year confirmation battle this summer.

The Republicans must filibuster any Obama pick until the cows come home.....
..with a propsed confirmation vote right in the middle of the 2010 election season it's a no brainer for the Reps to hammer the Dems to kingdom come or back to the People's republic of Chicago.

In his quest to give Obama another and perhaps last Supreme Court pick, Stevens, Ironically may have just insured that the DEMS loose both houses this fall.

This fight will be one for the ages but not for the faint of heart.

Thank You Judge Stevens!

It's a good time to have a brutal battle: jellyfish like McCain will suddenly find their spine.

.....As soon as the REPS take control of congress they should call for a special investigation on Obama's Chicago's Mafia strong arm threats to force Judge Stevens to retire and for Stupak to Cave and resigns as he has done.

This is what Labor Unions do every day to their Rank and File Members and now they are doing it in full open court for all to see.

No surprise... just like Thurgood Marshall threw in the towel after GHW Bush's popularity soared after the Kuwait invasion, Steven may be sensing that there won't be a Democrat senate next year to keep the liberal lineage. A Republican senate can trash every Obama nomination for the next two years with the optimal result being a 4-4 split. Nothing in the Constitution says that nine justices are required.

Don't expect Obama to moderate; liberals are still seething over Thomas replacing Marshall. That's why judges should be a critical point this November -- just think if Scalia, Thomas or Alito gets to be replaced by Obama and a Democrat senate.

Look I know that the Supreme Court is smart enough to take care of itself but the 4 conservatives and Justice Kennedy need to aquire extra security because this Chicago Mob led by Obama would do anything and I mean anything to try and gain total control of our society.

Sorry but I have seen what some Union Leaders can and will do and they are now in charge and they get their marching orders from Obama and the Chicago Mob.

You sound a little paranoid Tim.

Tim, Union thugs are cowardly scumbuckets--they're not worth your concern.

The numbers are on OUR side--we will prevail!

Good riddance!

Big deal,
Obama will appoint a liberal to replace a liberal, conservatives will moan for a while but GOP senators will roll over and play dead then confirm. Since Stevens was a Republican appointee (Ford) look at some other GOP appointees since the '50's that turned out to be a liberal rogue's gallery: Warren, BRENNAN & STEWART (Ike), BURGER, POWELL & BLACKMUN (Nixon), O'Connor (Reagan), Souter (Bush I). For you Supreme Court historians five of these GOP appointees voted FOR Roe v. Wade.

This is great news. If the Republicans play it smart, they can run out the clock to the elections with a lengthy but fruitless confirmation battle and keep the Democrats from bringing up and forcing through any more of their really wretched proposals.
