The Spectacle Blog

Ann Coulter is beginning a tour of Canadian college campuses, and the Canuckistani human-rights commissars are up in arms. An official of the Universtiy of Ottawa sent Coulter a warning letter:

We have a great respect for freedom of expression in Canada, as well as on our campus, and view it as a fundamental freedom, as recognized by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I would, however, like to inform you, or perhaps remind you, that our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or "free speech") in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States.
I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here. You will realize that Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression.
For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges. . . .

I scored a brief Q & A with Coulter today.

This is what I would do if I were Ann Coulter.
Scrap the original speech and talk about that letter that you referred to above from the University of Ottawa. The topic should then be real Freedom of Speech versus what the phony baloney of Canada.
The speech should not " Radical Islam--Dangers"
but rather: My free speech versus yours in discussions on terrorism.

Eric Reite| 3.24.10 @ 9:08AM

Hopefully, that hate-filled, souless, joyless, pathetic and pitiful woman will take the hint and leave Canada forever, taking with her the stench of despair that clings to her and her ilk. My God, how she must have been ignored by her parents while she was growing up to make her think the only way to get any attention from anyone is to spew the most offensive things she can think of. I actually feel sorry for her, like I feel sorry for a rabid dog that needs to be disposed of.
And I will take allowing protesters to be seen and heard over the disgusting way your American media and politicos wrangle to make sure the protesters that are a threat to their "balls to the wall" style of capitalism are neatly quarentined.

Osumashi Kinyobe| 3.22.10 @ 3:11PM

Perhaps Miss Coulter should visit some Canadian blogs or refer to Ezra Levant or Mark Steyn. Canadian universities don't even speak for their own students let alone the entire nation.

martin j smith| 3.22.10 @ 3:14PM

Left this point out. Ann Coulter should reply to the letter from Ottawa University asking in part: Is this a threat ?
At any rate the speech could examine the Criminal Threat against those who seek Free Speech. And, perhaps even this: What Canada has is not free speech. It has something less desireable and dangerous.

val| 3.22.10 @ 3:26PM

LOL. If they do as she says, and send the Canadian Mounties after her, I know what she'll do. Push the Mountie off the horse and take off on the beautiful animal for a nice long ride!

JohnD| 3.22.10 @ 3:33PM

It is time we recognize that Canada, by prosecuting speech-crimes, is not a country that respects basic human rights or free expression.

Patriot| 3.22.10 @ 3:56PM

We're nearly there. If the Gay lobby gets its way our religious will be frog-marched to jail for preaching the Bible.

How is speech free when you put 'reasonable limits' on it? Who gets to decide what reasonable is?
Damned Marxists.

JohnD| 3.22.10 @ 4:13PM

Patriot, I believe it was Oliver Wendell Holmes concurring opinion in Schenk v. U.S. that laid out the "free marketplace of ideas" view of free speech, and discussed the speech - action continuum, where by on one end you had thought, on the other action, and speech was in the middle. Holmes opined that thought should never be sanctioned, nor should speech, until that speech got too close to a prescribed action.

Speech that discusses and plans a criminal conspiracy is not protected; nor is speech intended to implore others to illegal acts (Schenk was on a soapbox telling passersby to resist the draft by not registering, if I recall). This is where Holmes uttered the oft-misquoted line, (paraphrasing now) "even the broadest interpretation of our right to free speech would not permit someone to yell 'fire' in a crowded theater."

I would suggest you read Holmes concurrence in Schenk v. U.S., if you have not already. I hope I have the right case, but you can't find a better description of what true freedom of speech means in our republic.

Patriot| 3.22.10 @ 5:03PM

John, according to your post, Religious speech should be protected, right?

Dixie Pixie| 3.22.10 @ 4:16PM

With the conservatives luck this week it will be Obama appointed Wahhabi lunitics.

MarkJ| 3.22.10 @ 4:08PM

If I were Ann, I'd probably send back the note with the following reply:

"I got this note from some psychotic nutball who is obviously sending out fascist threats under your good name and on University of Ottawa letterhead. If I were you, I'd launch to an immediate investigation into this. Best, Ann."

Canuck| 3.22.10 @ 11:46PM

Thinking is an interesting hobby, some of you should take it up. You have free speech in the USA? What is libel? What is slander? Why can't I burn a flag? Why does using the term "nappy" get a man fired? Your indignation and ignorance of your neighbour to the north is comical. Canada has free speech - more so than the US where people sue for a mention of a hangnail. The only difference here, which is what the letter (yes it was a stupid letter) is reffering to is that we have what is called group libel legislation. This means that just like libel is illegal in the States (yes you), you cannot falesly accuse a group of people of things which aren't correct - ie, Black people are the root of all evil, Jews control the world, white people created HIV to kill blacks. This is why you cannot host white supremast web sites in Canada but you can (thanks a lot wankers) in the States. Keep making fun of us, keep threatening us, keep on your postering. When those crazy Saudis you were all in bed with smashed into your buildings where do you think all those international flights were routed to? Which country opened up its citizen's homes to your people so they had somewhere to stay while flight bans were on? Which nation sent its troops to Afganistan above proportion to any other NATO allie. And lastly, Michael Moore is one of yours, not one of us!

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 12:18AM

Damn, you people are thin-skinned; must be all that freezing weather up there froze your pea brains.
You want to talk about gratitude? If you Canucks didn't have the mighty USA protecting your pansy asses, you'd have to have a REAL military!

Lighten up, Leftist loser.

Canuck| 3.23.10 @ 12:20AM

protecting us from whom? The only country that ever invaded Canada wa the US in 1892.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 12:41AM

Too bad we didn't put you down then maybe you wouldn't be a bunch of Leftist looneys today.

Get a life and stop whining, spoiled nitwit; envy is an ugly quality.

Mac| 3.23.10 @ 12:55AM

Err, you tried to.
You just happened to lose.
Seems to be becoming a habit doesn't it? Jumping into things all full of machismo, and then not being able to finish the job properly.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 1:06AM

If we had cared we would have, trust me: We just don't care and that's what ticks off you little morons.

I can see that it might be tough living in the shadow of our great country, but hey, you save money on military expenses so there's an upside, too.
You talking about Iraq and Afghanistan? What are you smokin'? Iraq is a success and Afghanistan is coming along. Bush was right, so deal with it. Besides, who are you to talk? 3000 of your citizens weren't incinerated in 2001.

Weak Canadian Beta males are real turn offs--glad you're up there and not down here!

Chieftan| 3.23.10 @ 1:18PM

You're absolutely right, Iraq is a success, provided your only measure of success is getting rid of Hussein. However, I think maybe, just maybe, Mac may have been referring to Vietnam too. That was most certainly NOT a success, unless you count massacreing hundreds of innocent men, women, children and seniors a success (and I'm referring specifically to Mai Lai here, not the war as a whole).

And you're also right that we didn't have 3000 of our citizens incinerated in 2001. But that's probably just because nobody hates us that much - same clearly can't be said for you guys (which is why Americans pretend to be Canadians when travelling abroad). Oh, and in point of fact, not everybody killed on 9/11 were American - Canadians died that day too, as did innocent civilians of many different nationalities.

Johnny| 3.23.10 @ 2:46PM

USA hasn't won a war since WW2. Iraq is a success? Afghanistan coming along?? LOL!!! What are you smoking buddy???

Hmm, whatever it is, it's probably shipped down from Vancouver...gotta get me some!

NO CANADIAN TURDS!!| 3.24.10 @ 1:42AM

Sitting on your useless ass all day, I'm sure you have plenty of time to get your dope, loser.

Looik who is laughing now| 3.24.10 @ 7:47AM

.... oh Lordy! You Americans are too funny. Broke, war mongering and disliked world wide. Still need our oil, our energy and our trade. Yes, we take free sppech seriously, just not frustrated, hate filled women like Ann.

glow| 3.23.10 @ 1:24AM

One critical comment after a whole row of Coulter boosting, and all you can do is pop your eyeballs and dredge up the two most painfully overdone Canada jokes? Cool the roid rage macho man.

Anne Coulter, and you, are like the schoolyard bully. Ignore their BS and they become irrelevant.

I apologise for my countryman, one of thing about Canadians, some of us do tend to get a little worked up over ignorant polemicists like Anne Coulter. Houle's letter was a stupid, if funny gesture, he should have let Anne come and maybe actually get charged for some of the bigoted garbage she spews.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 3:23AM

What rage? Not used to sarcasm, huh?
Guess you didn't notice the 'painfully overdone' nasty snark that spewed from one of your bullies first, glow. Kiss my American ass; smug, self-righteous losers.

If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.
We value courage here, you not so much. Don't be afraid of Coulter, she won't hurt your tender ears.

BTW, that's 'ANN'--not too observant, I see.

Not a Yank| 3.23.10 @ 2:57AM

Ok if that is how and what you think, to each their own I guess. The reason we don't need a military is because we don't piss everyone off. If you want to talk gratitude than I say, thanks. Thanks for umm nothing. Since you promote the military so much, are you in the service? Have u ever fought for your country? You must have made your paretns proud. Oh by the way I might have a pea brain but at least I have one unlike you. Cheers have a great day.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 3:27AM

As if we don't have enough stinkin' libturds of our own, we have to put up with you leftist fools from up north, too.

I don't promote the military, I just pointed out that you don't have to have a big military because you're located near us.

Got that, Einstein? It ain't rocket science, you know.

Go away, tedious fools.

Revmichaels| 3.23.10 @ 5:04AM

Apparently Patriot believes his country saved the world. Typical ignorant American Civil Religion. The US tends to lose the wars where they have to fight by themselves. They crow about their military prowess when they come in and mop up after everyone bleeds and dies for a few years. Americans are the cowards and they are also one of the stupidest nations on the planet.
Check your history Patriot... oh wait... you only troll the internets and believe wikapedia is the truth.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 5:31AM

Go to hell, you stupid bastard--you wouldn't know the truth if it bit you on your fat ass.

You don't know anything about our American military; they are the best of the best and only a gutless fool would call them cowards. Just ask the poor, injured people of Haiti, they'll tell you about our young Americans.

One thing I know for sure-- vermin like you are not good enough to kiss their feet.

Canuck| 3.23.10 @ 12:44AM

as is arrogance, pride, bulleyism, anti-intellectualism and ignorance. Good luck with that whole Obama thing down there.

Nick| 3.23.10 @ 10:43AM

Canuck,

"protecting us from whom?"(sic)

Maybe you've heard of a little war from the middle of the last century called WORLD WAR TWO!

All of you Canucks would be speaking German and eating sauerkraut today, if not for the U.S. of A.

p.s. I'm half Canuck. So, under the premise that the only people who can ridicule a group, is a member of said group, it is okay for me to use the word "Canuck."

Yosemeti Sam| 3.23.10 @ 1:04AM

Yo - losing sleep over how them liberal hockey pucks North of the border FEAR a scrawny
woman of conservative intellect.

Yikes!

Canadians: close the border; post your three man army; hide your children!

LOL.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 1:11AM

Ann will kick their @sses, take names and still look gorgeous!

Ann might be slender, but those wiry ones are dangerous, Yosemeti. What a great girl.

Is that YOU ?| 3.23.10 @ 9:37AM

Anne.... stop posting about your own stories... it is getting old.

Dumb Butt Leftists| 3.24.10 @ 2:22AM

Learn to spell her name correctly, moron--it's only three letters. A.N.N.

I can tell your leftist run public schools are as crappy as ours.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 1:36AM

Hey, what makes you think our universities should be any different than yours. PC crap exists on both sides of the border.

Just wait until she gets to Calgary. They throw flowers at her and welcome her with open arms. I just wish I didn't live so far away from CowTown and I'm very glad I don't live in Ontario.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 1:55AM

*they'll*

Besides, the link you provided does not lead to any of our Human Rights Tsars (not that they wouldn't agree with those idiots). Those idiots happen to be the U of O Students Association. Don't tell me that surprises you. Check it out.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 2:28AM

And that crap about protecting us, tell that to the family of the latest dead Canadian soldier along with the 140 other Canadian soldiers and four civilians who have been killed in Afghanistan. Tell me why my dad and four of my uncles signed up in 1939 to fight in WWII while your guys dithered for another two and a half years. Canada lost 42,042 men and women in that war and our population was only a fraction of what yours was at that time (and still is). As a percentage of the population, more Canadians signed up and went overseas than did the Americans.

I have great admiration for America and what they do in the world. Rest assured I will not change my opinion simply because there are brain dead idiots posting here.

ZerObama| 3.23.10 @ 3:11AM

Sort of like the brain dead idiot you are, Louise.
Stop whining, you people are a bore.

Yosemeti Sam| 3.23.10 @ 3:00AM

Kudos to Canadian valor - in WWII.

Though - of another time and of harmony with American valor.

Spit on us now - and we spit back at you!

BTW- keep any remaining draft dodgers!

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 3:23AM

Why does it always end up being a pissing contest? I've read countless articles about the American political situation lately, and every single one of them is followed with comments from Americans who continually justify the negative view the world has of them as a whole. I would like to believe that not all Americans are self righteous assholes but it's becoming difficult. To say that she is a victim of a hate crime because she got a letter asking her (in really stupid terms) not to be a total bitch when she comes here? Please. Get over yourself. We have total freedom of speech here, we just aren't assholes. And therin lies the difference.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 3:35AM

You don't get it moron--we don't care what you think of us. Why should we? You're nothing--as a people and as a country. What the hell have you ever done for anyone else? And please don't start whining about events that took place nearly a century ago for cripes sake.

I do believe that all Canadians are smug, self-satisfied A-Holes--you're proof of it, b!tch. You're cowards, too. So STFU!

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 4:09AM

Sigh, Thank you for doing nothing but prove my point. I have no intention of whining about anything. I'm sure if you had our history jammed down your throats as children as we have had yours, you would be more aware of what Canada has contributed to the world and wouldn't have to ask. I think someone already mentioned that we fed and sheltered the passengers of over 255 planes that were diverted on 9/11. We sent warships, helicopters, rescue crews, beds, blankets, military divers, etc to assist the rescue missions during Katrina, not to mention the Universities that offered to take in students from New Orleans, Canadians housed around 1200 evacuees. Oh, and the $5,000,000 that the government donated to help. That's not including the personal donations made by Canadians in general. That's not me being smug, that's just me looking it up on the internet to answer your question. I was actually curious. You haven't had any major disasters since, so that's the most recent thing I could find to make my point. I personally tried to collect money for the people on the Gulf Coast because at the time I worked for a gaming supplier, so I knew and worked indirectly with a lot of people affected by it. Unfortunately the people I worked with were more concerned with how it affected the company. So you see, there are American Assholes and there are Canadian Assholes. But we're not all assholes. Well, it appears you are, but who cares what I think? I'm just Canadian right?

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 5:09AM

Amazing. Exactly what was your point, Spinner?

You called Americans A-Holes and Ann Coulter a b!tch, and you wonder why I became angry? You were foul-mouthed and crude--and I proved YOUR point? How can you expect civility if you are uncivil?

Look, I have nothing against your beautiful country or your people; you are our neighbors and we have been friends for a long time, but destructive political correctness and loss of our freedoms are worrying. Many of us fear that we are losing our beloved country.

This is an ideological clash more than anything else, and right now a lot of us are uncertain about our future. We're in serious trouble and, honestly, I'm concerned about violence.

You sound nice in your second post and I have no quarrel with you, Spinner--I wish you the best.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 6:31AM

Well, my original point was just to ask why on every article I read about the American political situation does it end up being an endless string of abuses that have nothing to do with the actual issue? It almost always ends up with people attacking each other and spewing off about why one country is better than the other. It seems a bit ridiculous.
I was not calling all Americans a-holes. I actually said I would like to believe that not all Americas are a-holes but I was finding it difficult after reading the vast amount of seriously vulgar and insulting comments that I've read throughout the day, including those here. So your response of telling me that as a people and a country we are nothing , and to call me a bitch and a coward just added to that. The coward thing just provoked me to defend myself and Canada's contributions to the US. It's not just one sided. I did not call Ann Coulter a bitch, I said the idiot that wrote that letter was just asking her not to be a total bitch when she spoke. He did it in the stupidest way possible, don't get me wrong. I will say that I don't think she is a very nice human being.
Having said all of that, I understand that people must be on edge there, which is why I started reading today in the first place.

My first search today on google was "health care reform civil war".
I'm sincerely concerned too! I saw protesters freaking out on the news, and all I kept thinking, was what's the big deal if everyone gets health care?! Then it was explained to me what it's really about. It's scary to think how people are going to react.
I am nice! Really, I am...I just like to defend myself when provoked. I'm sure you are a good person too. I feel confident that once the dust settles, beyond a few radicals it won't get out of control. If it does you can always come hang out here for a while:) Take care.

Juliet| 3.24.10 @ 1:44AM

We like to vote on huge changes in our country--we don't like them rammed down our throats.

The democrats will pay.

Douglas| 3.23.10 @ 3:39AM

I am an American who loves Canada! What the Hell is Ann Coulter doing in Canada? Ann Coulter is a disgusting, inflammatory, derogatory bigot who pisses off enough people in the US, let alone Canada. Here's an idea, Deny her entry! How about a speaking engagement on Baffin Island?

ZerObama| 3.23.10 @ 3:43AM

Then go live there, braindead Leftist moron! Freeze your stupid liberal ass off, too!

Douglas| 3.23.10 @ 3:45AM

Go F-ck yourself Asshole

ZerObama| 3.23.10 @ 4:00AM

Right back at you, dumbsh!t. Liberal crackhead loser.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 4:15AM

I would like to point out that it was really warm here today. Why is it that everyone that isn't a jerk in their comments referred to as a leftist? I'm honestly curious. If I believe in freedom of speech and democracy, and not being a dick about it, does that make me a leftist? Just checkin, cuz now I'm provoked.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 4:41AM

@Patriot:
Thank you for asking that question...Interesting list.
Apparently we invented peanut butter. And Basketball. And Plexiglass.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 4:43AM

My mistake, Plexiglass was conceived of by the guy while he went to university here...

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:55AM

Douglas, I love Ann Coulter. And believe me, the assholes here that are spitting on the graves of Canada's Afghan war dead will not change that or my opinion of Americans in general. We all have our share of jerks. Some of them inhabit universities and some of them post at American Spectator.

Patriot| 3.23.10 @ 5:16AM

Yes, Louise--and some of those A-Holes posting here are Canadians. Most likely Leftist, too.

Only Leftists would spit on those brave few who fight on our behalf.

Wow| 3.23.10 @ 3:15PM

I don't spit on the brave, just the f-cking cowards who sent them in for no reason.... except that democracy that'll sell you CHEAP oil...

Pressure Chavez, I heard he hates you guys now.. named his Donkey after your ex-president... whom you elected TWICE.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:06PM

There's oil in Afghanistan? Who knew?

Nick| 3.23.10 @ 6:19PM

Chavez?

Oh....you mean Hugo the Hipo, huh?

Nick| 3.23.10 @ 6:20PM

That should be: Hugo the Hippo...

NO COMMIES!| 3.24.10 @ 2:18AM

Chavez is one ugly little bastard. Makes my skin crawl.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 5:03AM

Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed, we fired the guy who declined to send our forces to Iraq. Now he was an asshole. We put someone in who knows what our duty is to our allies.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 7:03AM

Okay, I just really want to know without any animousity or nastiness if I would be considered a leftist or not. I'm actually asking. Here are my base beliefs:
Everyone is equal regardless of sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, and should be treated in the way that you would hope to be treated yourself.

No one deserves to be persecuted or procecuted based on their beliefs unless they have willfully harmed another human being, and then only procecuted.

Everyone has a right to express their opinion, but it can be expressed without being preached and just because you have one doesn't make you right (me included).

If people need help and you can give it, do it.

Left? Right? Center?

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 7:26AM

Yosemeti Sam| 3.23.10 @ 3:00AM, I suspect most of the draft dodgers are in the old folks special care homes by now. I don't think it would be fair to deport them at this late stage.

If you're referring to war (aka Iraq and Afghanistan) "resisters", let me bring you up to date. We sent them back. You can keep 'em.

Wow| 3.23.10 @ 3:14PM

I don't think any of these people turned on the tube and saw that Canada is in Afghanistan. We have less to gain there though, we don't need to steal their resources..

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:11PM

Are you a Canadian, Wow? If you are, or even if you aren't, might I suggest Rabble.ca as a more appropriate venue for your (cough) contributions.

LEFTIST LOSERS GO AWAY| 3.24.10 @ 1:48AM

Steal Afghanistan's resources? Like what? What resources? Dude, you're braindead.
Maybe you mean their poppies so you can score more heroin. What a loser.

Ahmad Yaqeen| 3.23.10 @ 8:33AM

Why is it that Palestine is only the part of the British Mandate where Jews live and not where Arabs live?
Why is it that in 1964 Yassir Arafat did not consider the West Bank ,Gaza as being occupied or part of Palestine but in 1968 he included Gaza and West Bank?

The answer is that this is not about Palestinian territory , it is about the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the Middle East,.

Take a look at the map of Palestine pre 1948 and you will see how the smallest part of Palestine is where “Palestinians” have made their claim and it coincidentally is where Jews live and where Jewish history that predates Islam and Palestinians, could not be more obvious.

Ottawa University welcomed George Galloway to their school without pre conditions inspite of his support for Hamas, Saddam Hussein, and of course George Galloways TV show is sponsored by George Galloways close friend President Ahmadinejad who owns Press TV. Now aint that nice when right now Iran has denied free speech in the Iran using brutal and deadly force. So lets not talk about Neda Soltani and Zahra Kazemi ..

Ahmad Yaqiin| 3.23.10 @ 8:52AM

Islamophobia does not exist. It is a myth created in the same breath as Palestinian Nationhood.
Pay attention to the definition of "Phobia" and you will begin to understand. A "Phobia" is an event whose possibilities are highly unlikely.Like a Shark attack.
Putting Islamophobia in perspective, some 650,000 people dies of heart disease per year aprox.
Yet since 911 there have been well over 12000 terrorist attacks claiming at least an 5 lives for every successful attack , and than add the attacks that have been thwarted by security measures such as taking off your shoes etc..Do the math and Islamophobia could not possibly be a phobia based in the numbers and geographical targets.
So why is the fear of Islam or Muslims a "phobia". We dont take our shoes off at airports because we are trying to prevent shark bites.

Tim| 3.23.10 @ 10:05AM

What's with all the Canada bashing? What's with all the US bashing? Aye Caramba!

We're secure enough in our nation's identity not to be envious of others.

Only losers envy others.

truth| 3.23.10 @ 11:11AM

Ann Coulter shouldn't even come here she has nothing to say that relivant to this country

She's knows nothing about Canada as demonstrated in this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FKF4Z36hyQ - When she goes on about how we were vietnam even when she's corrected

She hates this country and expresses her hate in this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFQs9sVvujE

I rest my case

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:29PM

You know truth, lefties on both sides of the border never fail to fall for her shtick. She 's being deliberately "in your face" politically incorrect because she knows it makes a leftie squirm. And boy do they squirm. It's beautiful to watch.

In addition to that, don't ignore the context in which the second video needs to be placed. Ann Coulter is far from the only American who was deeply hurt by Jean Chretien's decision to keep Canada out of the Iraq war. She is simply saying what many Americans were feeling, and I don't blame them. I consider Chretien's decision a black mark on our nation that may take a very long time to erase.

Juliet| 3.24.10 @ 1:55AM

Louise, I love Ann and agree with her on most issues, but, man, that girl is a bomb thrower.
She makes me cringe sometimes! She's funny, too--but usually it's at leftists' expense. lol

We don't have many sparky girls on our conservative side, so I appreciate her--but she does tend to rile things up!

Good luck up there.

Rik P| 3.23.10 @ 11:45AM

Ann Coulter routinely speaks with hate and prejudice. She insults people and accuses people of horrendous acts.
She stated she was sorry the 9/11 terrorists didn't do a better job.
Thank god Canada has laws which protect people from biased and lying talk circuit shills .

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:43PM

"Thank god Canada has laws which protect people from biased and lying talk circuit shills ."

Actually, we don't have laws with protect people from biased and lying talk circuit shills. We have laws that protect speakers of leftist bias and lies, whether from circuit shills , race hucksters or Islamofascists and their apologists, but certainly not the specially targeted groups that those speakers seek to silence.

Moreover, the laws are applied unequally, depending on how much money you have. Small people who are basically nobodies can be utterly destroyed by the human rights industry, whereas well known people with money who can afford the legal fees strike fear into the human rights busybodies and they run away.

If you're talking about the Criminal Code, I think you'll be very disappointed in its efficacy with respect to shutting down people who you find offensive. The human rights commissions, on the other hand, are very good at intimidating people, but will not even attempt to go after someone with the stature that Ann Coulter has.

Excellent post, Louise. We fight the same fight here in the USA--you are my sister. :)

Hal | 3.23.10 @ 12:33PM

Perhaps there is a gene for cowardice, or maybe just years of attempted justification does it.
Combine that with the tendency to surrender their French descendants contribute, and it should not be a surprise how they act.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 2:12PM

"the tendency to surrender their French descendants contribute"
What does that even mean?! If you're going to insult a country please at least do it in a way that makes sense.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 2:44PM

I should clarify my first question. What French descendants are you referring to? Are you talking about the 7 year war that happened in the 1700's against the british? Because if you're going to follow that logic then does that make you racist, sexist, people enslaving oppressor? I hardly think that's fair.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:45PM

Bingo, spinnerchik.

spinnerchik| 3.23.10 @ 6:20PM

Thanks Louise!

Hal Nelson| 3.23.10 @ 12:38PM

My previous comment omitted the previous portion saying that Canadian cowardice could be due to years of taking the dregs of our county, from fearful Tories during the Revolution to our draft dodgers ever since.

Wow| 3.23.10 @ 2:57PM

You f-cking yanks talk about cowardice.. go read a book about WWII that wasn't written by one of you, and you'll find that while the WORLD nations died, you sat back at the god damn beach and waited until the end to even join in.. and now, you invade for oil and pretend its to instill democracy. Idiots, truly idiots.

LEFTISTS ARE LOSERS| 3.24.10 @ 1:59AM

Shut up braindead, drug-addled bonehead. Easy to spout your silly lies when you're protected by the bravest military in the world.

You're so stupid you make me laugh. Get a job, loser.

Crawl back under the slimy rock you call home.

Wow| 3.23.10 @ 3:11PM

Spinnerchik.. finally an intelligent person on here, you must be from out of the US :)

I also like these guys on here that talk about free speech, if your free speech is so good, could an "African American" (or in US - Black Man) speak out against a white man 30 years ago and claim free speech? Or would you hang him anyhow... just for being different?

We have oil... but we already have a democracy.. how are you extort ours?

LEFTISTS ARE LOSERS| 3.24.10 @ 2:00AM

Turd. Get a job and get out of your step-mom's basement.

Louise| 3.23.10 @ 4:57PM

Hal: "...from fearful Tories during the Revolution to our draft dodgers ever since. "

Hal, my pal. During the Vietnam war the United States instituted a draft, which, if I understand it correctly, compels the citizen to join the armed forces and go to war. Some of those Americans who opposed the war did go across the border, sought refuge and were successful. But that was more than 35 years ago.

During the recent wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) there has been no draft. No American is forced to join the services and go off to war. Consequently the cowards who came north had to call themselves something else. War "resisters" is the term they used and they tried, through legal methods to apply for refugee status in Canada. To my knowledge, none of them were successful. We booted the sorry asses of every single one of them back to their home country and when that happened the others just gave up and went back home. They then understood that Canada in the 21st century was not the same place that the earlier crop of draft dodgers had come to and Canada understands that people fleeing from a duty they volunteered to do are not refugees. Please get yourself up to date.

armenius| 3.23.10 @ 5:32PM

Those real Canadians that have not been silenced by the neo-communist inspired left( think liberal weenies), think that Ann has a point as well as a message. North of the 49th parallel we enslaved in a heap of leftist rules when it comes to free speech and other freedoms Americans tend to take for granted. A case in point are the notorious left wing Human Rights Tribunals which deny Canadian citizens due process and which are like the Nazi's notorious peoples' courts run by Soviet commissars.

marie pion| 3.23.10 @ 10:08PM

Considering the history of Ms. Coulter's speeches - the Provost was absolutely right - and very respectful.

Considering the vitriol in which Ms. Coulter has spoken of Canada in the past, she should not even be permitted to enter this fine country.

Americans seem to hide behind their "Free Speech" - yet have you ever seen a nation filled with such hatred for its own people.... Americans hide behind God knows which amendment, to go around shooting their children....

Let them have their abhorent society - and keep Ms. Coulter.

LEFTISTS WHINE| 3.24.10 @ 2:08AM

What are you afraid of, Marie? Words?
Shame on you for being weak and so easily led like a sheep to slaughter. Words can't hurt you but government oppression can.
Wise up.

Whiny leftists are the biggest babies in the world--and the nastiest. You rant about others hatred? You are very hateful--just read your ugly post.

Or better yet--don't.

Americans shoot their children? Where did you hear that nonsense, asshole? You should be thrown in jail just for your stupidity.

That's "abhorrent" dumb girl. Learn to spell correctly.

Awful, awful girl--please stay out of my country.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 12:41AM

Speaking engagement in Ottawa cancelled due to concern over violence. Um I think the worst thing Canadians have ever done to a public figure here is chuck a pie at them. Or a chocolate milk. I think it's just completely out of hand. And I don't buy shoes on the internet...w-t-f

HYPOCRITES| 3.24.10 @ 2:16AM

Spinner--that wonderful Canadian "tolerance" you folks were bragging about, huh? Peaceful?
A violent and vicious mob of 2000 Canadians rioted with clubs and sticks and threatened Ann Coulter's life today. Her speech had to be canceled.

I just hope she had good security to protect her from those terrible thugs. You Canadians should be ashamed of yourselves tonight. This incident makes you look BAD.

You're not as nice as you think you are--not as nice at all. Stop lecturing us--please!

spinnerchick| 3.24.10 @ 3:26AM

This is all I've found so far.
http://watch.ctv.ca/news/lates.....clip280193
And an article that said some idiots had bullhorns and placards were picking on an older man. But other than that no incidences. Not exactly the picture I was given earlier by Hipocrite. I'm still trying to find an American report.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 2:42AM

I was just throwing un update in there about the original issue. Sorry dude. Yeah, we're pretty peaceful as a whole. I'm trying to find video / images of the protest. If it was like that it's not something I would ever be proud of and it would be embarrasing. Didn't realize I was lecturing, I figured I was standing up for my country when it was insulted. Isn't that what you guys are all about
? Do you have any links for that?

USA| 3.24.10 @ 2:55AM

Protest? A violent mob of 2000 people shouting and screaming and carrying weapons? Trying to hurt Ann Coulter? I don't know what you call a protest--but I would call that little exposition a RIOT!

Ann is outspoken and at times rude--I agree; but so what? What are leftists so afraid of, why are they so full of hatred?

One small woman with something to say--and a violent riot erupts. Leftism is on the march--and all the hatred and violence are on their side.

Yes, trouble is coming, and coming fast.
God help us.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 3:03AM

I'm still just trying to find a picture of it. So far all I've found out that there were 10 police cars at the scence. Haven't found much on clubs and sticks yet....

Tolerance| 3.24.10 @ 3:33AM

"Unruly mob." Not as violent as I first read--but her bodyguard thought it was unsafe for her to speak. Too bad, I'm sorry there is so little tolerance among people. She wasn't hurting anybody, just giving her opinion.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 3:41AM

The more I read the more I agree with you. I think everyone has a right to express their opinion, and to protest peacefully if they feel the need. But if you behave like the "thugs" that were picking on an old man, you loose all credibility. The letter never should have happened in the first place. I still don't like her but WOW, totally blown out of proportion. I'm sure 70% of the people there just so they could say they were there.

Ebony| 3.24.10 @ 10:00AM

I would have loved to have seen someone throw a shoe at her while they rode off on a camel. She is a hateful cow.

ZerObama| 3.24.10 @ 10:56PM

Violent much, braindead leftist? We know who really looks like a cow, don't we, Ebony? Mooooooo!

If you don't want to hear Ann Coulter speak, then don't invite her, dumbasses.

Yosemeti Sam| 3.24.10 @ 11:02AM

Yo - Canadians.

Those of you who are Leftists:

Your country hosted at the 2007 31st
Toronto International Film Festival
an applauded film entitled " Death of a President ".

Centering on then President Bush of the United States.

Foam at the mouth over Ann Coulter if you are wont.

But do not equate her conservative views to the rabidity of your owncountrymen or countrywomen towards then leaders of our country.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 1:09PM

I'm still trying to figure out what you all consider to be a leftist or if I am one according to your standards.
I certainly don't agree with the cheering on of anyone being assasinated regardless of how I feel about their policies. I do however agree that they have the right to do so (react) if they are moved to do so. I think that falls under the whole idea of freedom of expression.

My biggest issue with Ann Coulter is that I think she is a hypocrite. Putting her tasteless, hateful "jokes" aside, the biggest joke is that she claims to be a Christian. The way in which she has made her living and gained fame; by insulting, chastising, ostrasizing and ridiculing any group of people that do not fit into hers is the complete opposite of any values that the Christian church teaches. I may have stopped going to church a long time ago, but I remember Sunday School and not once did I hear that Jesus wants you to hate, or spread the word of hate.

I don't make excuses for any one. I did not host anything.

I just find it interesting that when Canadians get all ticked off that someone insulted us in the public forum we're considered to be foaming at the mouth, but when I see Americans defending themselves it's a civil liberty.

spinnerchik| 3.24.10 @ 1:52PM

I just wanted to add that I think the VP at the U of O is at fault for causing this situation in the first place. Absolutely ridiculous.

Patriot| 3.24.10 @ 11:00PM

Spinner, you're NOT a leftist; even though you may disagree with Coulter, you wouldn't riot, threaten her life and prevent her from speaking, would you?
You're normal--they're not.

I'm glad at least now you understand where we're coming from--we want free speech for everyone.
If it's not violent it should be allowed to be said.

Take care.

Patriot| 3.24.10 @ 11:03PM

Spinnerchik, I would defend your right to speak here if my fellow citizens were trying to shut you up.

I am not a hypocrite--leftists are. They are dangerous.

Jorcsa| 3.25.10 @ 11:05PM

spinnerchik| 3.26.10 @ 4:48PM

Well-known for her right-wing political opinions and the controversial ways in which she defends them, Coulter has described herself as a polemicist who likes to "stir up the pot" and, unlike "broadcasters," does not "pretend to be impartial or balanced."
