Thus Caveth Stupak

Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) has announced a deal with the White House. Upon passage by Congress, President Obama will sign an executive order that is supposed to affirm no public funds will go to abortions under the health care bill. I have yet to see the language -- I could see where it might help the community health centers problem but not the federal subsidies for abortion coverage allowed under the Senate bill. But there are serious questions about whether an executive order could legally fix all of the problems with this bill from a pro-life perspective. And an executive order can be rescinded by any president at any time, while the law is permanent unless expressly repealed.

I believe Stupak is sincere in his commitment to the pro-life cause. But there was always a danger in letting the outcome hinge on pro-life liberals who in principle supported this approach to health care reform -- indeed, would support a bill to the left of this one -- as long as it contained satisfactory language on abortion.

UPDATE: Here is the text of the executive order, according to the Washington Post.

A rhyme from childhood reminds me of Stupak:

Gene, Gene, made a machine
Joe, Joe, made it go
Hank, Hank, turned the crank
Bart, Bart, let a fart and blew it all apart

Never count on a guy named Bart.

If Stupak and his team had any honor, they'd turn the tables on the floor, vote against the bill, and announce that they were, like their opponents, negotiating in bad faith.

Why not meet Jesuitical casuistry with the same? They had every reason to expect that the WH was negotiating in bad faith, and at that point, throwing good faith after bad is a waste and a collusion in the evil of the other side. That's what they would have said and done if they'd been sincere, but they are not sincere, so they're taking this President at "face value," pretending to assume that he'll comprehensively withhold abortion funding, which goes against everything he believes in.

Stupak showed his true colors today, as I always feared he would. Hopefully my old neighbors can agree to send him home (or off to a lobbying position) over this.

Liz| 3.21.10 @ 4:33PM

Not to mention, he's really stupid if he thinks Obama isn't going to rescind it later.

MarkJ| 3.21.10 @ 4:34PM

Well, Bart Stupak has done us all one favor: Black Bart has just demonstrated, beyond any reasonable doubt, that you'd have a better chance of bumping into Big Foot in a convenience store than bumping into truly principled pro-life congressional Democrat.

Here's my prediction for Stupak and his Merry Band of Sell-Outs in November:

PAIN.

John - TMF| 3.21.10 @ 4:35PM

Two up front thoughts...

1. At least Judas scored 40 pieces of silver... all Stupak got was a worthless piece of paper adorned with a promise from a liar.

2. Ultimately the Senate Bill was THE bill that the Dems were looking for... all of the kickbacks, special deals, abortion payments... it was merely socialized medicine with the label torn off.

I have asserted for years that there are NO pro-life Democrats. The entire socialist agenda is utilitarian, and you cannot have socialized medicine without the utilitarian impulse of abortion, euthanasia, and systemic suicide. Costs must be minimized, the young, old and sick all cost too much.

So, I repeat there are NO pro-life Democrats. This should be the end of that thinking.

Last thought...

If the US Catholic Bishops had done what they should have done, ages ago, and publicly and soundly excommunicated all Catholic Politicians who supported killing children as a right, then well we probably wouldn't be here... but they equivocated... and the price for their "mercy" is more death, poverty, and misery.

If Antle still believes Stupak gives a flip for the pro-life cause, he is sadly deluded. There's no way he could believe that this EO does anything for the cause he has pretended all these months to be concerned about. In fact, he's a total sellout of the pro-life cause. He is not pro-life.

Flip| 3.21.10 @ 4:53PM

Obama doesn't need to rescind the EO, Liz, it's entirely worthless from the get-go. Stupik knows that.

BD57| 3.21.10 @ 5:05PM

Stupak has settled for a fig leaf. His strategy is the bold lie - tell people you've worked out a principled solution, etc. and count on enough voters being fooled for you to stay in office.

"Pro-Life Democrat" is an oxymoron.

Leon| 3.21.10 @ 5:20PM

Stupak caved in 1994 on the Second Amendment.
Stupak caved on Bill Clinton's tax increases.
Stupak always caves.
He just took a few days longer this time.

Missy| 3.21.10 @ 9:22PM

Stupak's a liberal for heaven's sake--ideology trumps all. They're all Marxists.

Cal Mark| 3.21.10 @ 5:21PM

"I believe Stupak is sincere in his commitment to the pro-life cause."

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

You've been in punditland too long. Some principles are immovable. This is one of them.

Stupak's conduct in the last few days reminds me of an adulterer at closing time in a bar: desperately rationalizing away their wedding ring so to go home with someone.

W. James Antle III| 3.21.10 @ 5:43PM

Maybe. But some people need to do more rationalizing than others. In any event, the end result is the same: Stupak is wrong and his "yes" vote could be decisive.

Cal Mark| 3.21.10 @ 5:50PM

We are agreed that Stupak is wrong.

Stupak's antics in the last few days showed he was desperate to vote "Yes." He finally found a way. Some things you don't rationalize about, unless you're dishonest. Stupak's true character showed through.

This will probably pass with more than 216 votes. If nothing else, Stupak and his sellouts have bought cover for some Blue Dogs.

Mara| 3.21.10 @ 5:47PM

Stupak was lying all along. Listen to what he said in his town hall meeting last year.

Bart Stupid agreed to give his vote in exchange for Osama's signature on the executive order after the voting is complete. Osama's word is worthless and Stupak is just Stupid for believing it. No sweat, they will be gone in November.
