The Spectacle Blog

I've always had a soft spot for Firedoglake, even though Jane Hamsher has blown off all but one attempt for me to converse with her. They are often hideously left, but to their credit they are very very thorough and admirably analytical. Their coverage of the Scooter Libby trial, for instance, was absolutely essential reading even though they were determined to show that Libby was guilty (he wasn't), because they at least reported thoroughly and carefully.

All of which is prelude to this, the single most devastating takedown of Obamacare from the left that I have ever seen. It is intellectually honest and rigorous. Key paragraph:

A middle class family of four making $66,370 will be forced to pay $8,628 $5,243 per year for insurance. After basic necessities, this leaves them with $8,307 in discretionary income — out of which they would have to cover clothing, credit card and other debt, child care and education costs, in addition to $5,882 in annual out-of-pocket medical expenses for which families will be responsible.  Many families who are already struggling to get by would be better off saving the $8,628 in insurance costs and paying their medical expenses directly, rather than being forced to by coverage they can’t afford the co-pays on.

This is why the individual mandate, even from the lefty point of view, should be a non-starter. It really, really would cost ordinary, middle-class families, without them having any choice in the matter. It is an abomination.

Somebody needs to get this FDL post to every wavering Dem of a progressive cast of mind.

UPDATE: Oh, and as a bonus, an earlier FDL post confirms the point that I long have made, that what this is, is economic fascism.

This is not to wildly sling around labels as political scare tactics, but to honestly, soberly, and with intellectual integrity discuss what the word actually means. Key paragraph:

Rather than actually helping the poor, this bill is a dangerous and unprecedented step on the road to domination of government by private corporate players who use it to suppress competition and secure their profits — the textbook definition of fascism.

FDL also accuses President Obama of bad faith. Good stuff.

UPDATE TWO: Jane Hamsher kindly emailed me a correction on her numbers, above, as showed in the first excerpted paragraph.

Uh oh. You're going to make Liberal Reader cry if you call him a "Fascist Liberal!" That really gets his tights in a twist. Haha.

Dan| 3.19.10 @ 2:36PM

Gosh, imagine if the right had been arguing against the bill along these lines all along - instead of screeching about death panels, government takeovers and pulling the plug on grandma. As it stands, both supporters of the president AND loyal opposition reside on the left. The right is marginalized because it doesn't offer honest, substantive criticisms.

Note also the left's willingness to criticize a Democratic president's policies while it matters instead of sullenly mumbling about it long after the pooch has been well and truly screwed.

Really Quin, this short little blog post perfectly encapsulates why Republicans are discredited and why the right is intellectually bankrupt. Well done.

Missy| 3.19.10 @ 7:53PM

"Death Panels" are definitely part of ObamaCare--it's just rationing of medical care. Only corruption laden, morally bankrupt liberals try to deny it. We will defeat you monsters.

The American people will destroy ObamaCare--"Death Panel" it, if you will.

Democrats need to be "Death Paneled" on November 2, 2010--big time.

Dan, leftist delusions, such as the ones on display in your post, are always entertaining. My favorite is " Note also the left's willingness to criticize a Democratic president's policies while it matters instead of sullenly mumbling about it long after the pooch has been well and truly screwed. "

Where are all these statesmen on the left Dan going after Obama? Firedoglake hardly qualifies. On issue after issue, be it healthcare, cap and trade, spending, etc., the entire American left has fallen in line behind the chosen one. Now I know you probably think these are all good things to support, but when the s**t hits the fan, I doubt that you'll be able to identify prominent leftists who spoke out in opposition to O's policies.

I also love your "right is intellectually bankrupt" comment. Give us your evidence. You can go to any number of conservative websites - the Heritage Foundation comes to mind - to read a laundry list of conservative policy positions. Of course, you might have to use the thinking part of your brain, but I have high hopes for you.

Dan| 3.19.10 @ 9:22PM

I'm not sure why you are so dismissive of FDL; it's one of the biggest liberal blogs out there. Glenn Greenwald has launched blistering criticism of Obama on civil liberties and human rights. Corrente has been a pretty consistently skeptical voice coming at Obama from the left as well. It isn't hard to find that kind of commentary and activism.

I don't recall ANY commentary from here, NRO, Weekly Standard or elsewhere questioning the Bush Administration's rush to war in Iraq at the time. Feel free to correct me with links if you can find them. I honestly don't think anyone who has paid attention can miss the difference. The left is much better at criticizing its leaders than the right.

Dan| 3.19.10 @ 9:24PM

As for the pols, I don't recall an equivalent to the Progressive Caucus that opposed Iraq and had to be whipped, cajoled and otherwise persuaded to come along. The closest the GOP has is Ron Paul, and for all the devotion of his followers he remains a very minor player in the party.

Here's why the right is intellectually bankrupt: It has offered precisely one non-lunatic major policy proposal - Paul Ryan's budget - which the GOP leadership sprinted from, raises taxes on 90% of Americans and (continued on next comment)

Dan| 3.19.10 @ 9:24PM

won't even balance the budget in his distant projections. Everything else has been fearmongering or wishful thinking. That's intellectual bankruptcy in my book.

Nobama| 3.20.10 @ 1:11AM

Forget intellectual bankruptcy as you liberal morons stupidly grin while Obama and his Marxist minions in congress spend more trillions of dollars that will force our country into REAL BANKRUPTCY!

That is MORAL BANKRUPTCY. Democrats are dirt, pure and simple--and your corrupt policies are a threat to our freedom.

"... domination of government by private corporate players who use it to suppress competition and secure their profits — the textbook definition of fascism. "

Wrong, and the Spectator should not be quoting this with approval. Fascism is the consolidation of all activity under the state, including business corporations, labor unions, civic groups, education, recreations, hobbies - everything. Mussolini used "corporations" in the Italian meaning to cover all forms of private organization. It is favorite lie by the Left to claim he meant only business, and to imply business was to control the state, and not vice versa.

This family of four SHOULD NOT HAVE credit cards and educational expenses [if memory serves me, public education is FREE]. Their problem [like many others in their economic condition] is that they spend/blow money on excrement WANTS instead of critical NEEDS. They no doubt have two new expensive cars, several HDTV's, a too expensive house, etc; instead of trying to live within their means. What happens if they have a serious/critical illness/injury requiring extensive hospitalization [no doubt, the taxpayers will be on the financial hook if that happens, right?]!!!!!
