So let me see if I understand. Here's what Brett Baier seems to have uncovered in his interview with the President.

If the objective is to add a trillion or so the tax-payers bill, to take control of one-sixth of the economy, how you do this is no big deal. Process just isn't important because, well, there are all those people who need health care.

On the other hand, we can't water board, we must give trials to terrorists captured on the battlefield because, well, process is critical. Vital. National security just isn't that big a deal compared to the process of giving Constitutional rights to enemies, something never done before in American history.

Am I missing something here?

Your not missing a thing Jeffery.

This adminastration is ALL DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Liberal Reader| 3.18.10 @ 1:54PM

Yes, Mr Lord. You're missing something.

Water-boarding has always been considered torture. We've prosecuted our own officers for this offense. As torture, it violates federal law and international treaties.

Measures like "deem and pass" and reconciliation are NOT violations of federal law or international treaty. They basically fall within the province of Congressional rules.

But, they are also subject to challenge and political sanction. If the American people don't like the way the Democrats run Congress, they can vote in new members.

The president is not a member of the Congress, even if Dick Cheney will insist the Vice President is.

His responsibility -- as he sees it -- is to prevail on a central issue of the 08 presidential campaign. Liberals need to understand that rejected a single payer option before he was even the party's nominee. Conservatives need to understand that he promised significant health insurance reform (which is what this bill is).

The president is going to sign the bill he promised the people. If the people don't like it, he and the Congress will be punished at the polls.

"Elections have consequences" is becoming a tired saw, but in this case it's a useful guide to remembering what exactly is happening here.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 2:42PM

Marxist Reader,

How many times do I have to remind you NOT to get your history from wiki or media matters?

"Water-boarding has always been considered torture." WRONG!
"We've prosecuted our own officers for this offense." WRONG!
"As torture, it violates federal law and international treaties." WRONG!

"DemonPass" is a rule. Only BILLS can become LAW.
The supreme law of the land, the Constitution, states that: "But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by Yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively."
- Article 1, Section 7

Liberal Reader| 3.18.10 @ 3:02PM

I don't know what your sources are on water boarding. Just because Karl Rove pulls it out of his ass doesn't mean it's true.

Everything I've said about water boarding is factually accurate.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 3:24PM

Marxist Reader,

Sources please?

Show me where pouring water over someone's face is a violation of law, federal or international. Show me when an "officer" was prosecuted for pouring water over someone's face.

The only thing TORTURED here, is your definition of "torture."

By your silence, I assume you concede on the "DemonPass" point.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 3:41PM

By the way, Marxist Reader, have you learned the difference between a Republic and a democracy yet?

You haven't responded.
As usual, when you've been beaten.

Liberal Reader| 3.18.10 @ 4:03PM

I responded AT LENGTH last night about "democracy."

I recommend you do the following: Google the words "Scalia" and "democracy" and see how many times he uses the word to describe our form of government.

You and the handful of other idiots who get all your news on Glenn Beck need to shape up!

I'm not conceding any point. You haven't provided sources either. This isn't a college seminar. But -- again -- I think you are an adult and can do a little of the work yourself: look up the history of prosecutions we've done involving water boarding. I think you'll be surprised.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 4:16PM

Marxist Reader,

You responded....with falacies. I rebutted your points AT LENGTH.

I don't care IF Justice Scalia uses the word, I disagree. I'm not a lemming, like you.

I can't "look up the history of prosecutions", because it never happened. You have made the accusation, well, actually you are just repeating it. How am I supposed to prove something DIDN'T happen?

Finally, you HAVE conceded, because you cannot refute.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 4:18PM

Oops! That should be " ....with FALLACIES."

Liberal Reader| 3.18.10 @ 5:04PM

There's no DEBATE to be had, with Scalia or me. The definition of the word is what it is, and you are WRONG about what it is.

Now .. You're telling me water boarding has NEVER been prosecuted in this country? You're telling me a sheriff was NOT prosecuted in 1983 for using the method? You're saying no Japanese soldiers were prosecuted for using it as war criminals? That no US officers have been prosecuted after using the method in the Philippines?

This ship has sailed, dumb-ass. Everyone in the world considers water boarding torture; a few knuckle draggers on the right wing fringe of the Republican party disagree -- and they, as far as I'm concern, are as anti-American as many of the people they want to water board.

SoCon| 3.18.10 @ 6:02PM

You know damn well that it's deceitful to compare horrific Japanese 'water-boarding' to the interrogation techniques we used on the --THREE-- vicious Al Qaeda terrorists who were responsible for the wanton slaughter of 3000 of our fellow Americans.

I thank God everyday that GWB had the brass to order interrogation methods that stopped further terrorist attacks against our country. Thank you, W.

I shudder to think of what would have happened to us if the dishonorable AlGore had been able to steal the 2000 election--the first democrat ACORN election theft attempt.

We would have probably been suit-case nuked by now. Stupid liberals.

SoCon| 3.18.10 @ 6:09PM

Idiot. If "EVERYONE" considers water-boarding torture, why haven't the anti-American, terrorist defending morons at DOJ prosecuted anyone from Bush's administration yet?

Sounds like Obama's dereliction of duty, if what you said is true. You are such a weenie.

Nick| 3.18.10 @ 6:16PM

Marxist Reader,

Can't you make a point without name-calling and being vulgar?

We are a Republic, end of story. You have no rebuttal.

YES! I'm telling you that pouring water over someone's face has NEVER been prosecuted. You have given examples of the "Water Cure", not waterboarding. Everything that involves water is not waterboarding. Try knowing the details before you make a fool of yourself.

Regarding the Texas sheriff:
First, you wrote: "We've prosecuted our own [OFFICERS] for this offense." Not a sheriff who set up a "marijuana trap".

Second, when debating the subject of "waterboarding", it is implied one is referring to a time of war, not peace. Lawful combatants and unlawful combatants. Nice try.

Only bleeding hearts, like yourself, think waterboarding is torture. Torture is like pornography. People with common sense know it, when they see it.

I thought you libs thought it was un-American to question someone's patriotism?

Jeffrey Lord| 3.18.10 @ 9:04PM

LR...

Who was prosecuted for waterboarding VMI cadets like George Marshall? Details, please.

SoCon| 3.18.10 @ 4:44PM

Nick, I notice you've been beating old Screeder around a lot lately. Good job.

Buzz off, Liberal Screeder/Drew.

JP| 3.18.10 @ 2:50PM

"Measures like "deem and pass" and reconciliation are NOT violations of federal law or international treaty. They basically fall within the province of Congressional rules"

Nice strawman. However, it is the application of the "Slaughter Rule" that will be unconstitutional. Congress cannot present a bill to the President for signing until both houses pass it (ie a public roll call).

Liberal Reader| 3.18.10 @ 3:03PM

JP --

I didn't introduce water boarding into the conversation. It's in the original piece by Lord, which you don't seem to have read.

The straw man is his if anyone's.

Kyle Smith| 3.18.10 @ 2:16PM

I just heard about this story. Apparently, Joseph Cao (R), from Louisiana and the only Republican who voted Yes on the House Bill back in November is taking a second look. If this guy votes Aye, the Republican leadership needs to physically throw this guy out.

Pete| 3.18.10 @ 2:24PM

No, the American people do not like the way the Democrats are running Congress, exposing a dizzying, core-deep "culture of corruption" orchestrated by the Anointed One, conducted by the rotten team of Pelosi/Reid, and played by a host of craven "representatives".

You know how you can tell when you have won an argument?

When the person you are debating won't address your objections and runs away.

Lo and behold, several months after every teacher at a low-performing Rhode Island high school was fired so the school could get a fresh start, and after Education Secretary Arne Duncan praised the firings as an act of “courage,” and after President Obama declared that the firings showed a “sense of accountability,” well, after all of that, the teachers have been rehired.
