Massachusetts Treasurer Tim Cahill, who is running for governor as an independent this year, has come out swinging against the Democratic health care bill based on a similar experiment in Massachusetts. Yesterday Obama adviser David Axelrod cited “Masscare” as a model for Obamacare.

That’s exactly the problem, says Cahill. He told CNBC that such a plan would “wipe out the American economy within four years.” He was quoted by the Boston Globe as saying, “It is time for the president, the Democratic leadership, to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new plan that does not threaten to bankrupt this country.”

Cahill kept up the pressure in a conference call this afternoon. He said the problem with the Massachusetts/Obama approach was that it increased access without addressing costs. “We haven’t changed the way we deliver health care. We haven’t changed the way we pay for health care,” Cahill said. “Nothing’s changed about the cost structure but we’ve blown a huge hole in the budget to increase coverage by 400,000.” Massachusetts already had one of the highest coverage rates in the country. Implement a similar plan in states with higher percentages of uninsured and the costs will become even more staggering.

I asked Cahill why he was coming out now. “Last week Governor Deval Patrick basically called me out,” he replied. He also noted that the bill was moving closer to passage. Cahill wanted to speak out against Patrick’s “mismanagement of the program” while also warning against the conceptual flaws that the Democrats want to replicate nationally.

Politically, this not only lets Cahill tap into the anti-health care bill sentiment that helped elect Scott Brown to the Senate. It actually puts him to the right of Brown — and Mitt Romney — by marking him as an opponent of the Massachusetts health care reform. Asked about Romney’s argument that it was all about the implementation of the plan, Cahill replied, “I could probably agree with that partially. I certainly have some concerns about how Governor Patrick has implemented it.” But he also maintained the bill was “fatally flawed from the beginning.”

This move will also help Cahill, who was twice elected state treasurer as a Democrat, gain a hearing among conservatives nationally. I’ve written about Cahill’s gubernatorial aspirations before for the main site. I’ll have more to say later.

And yet, this RINO leads the polls for GOP 2012 nominee. That shows you how there is no conservative party in the USA anymore. The fact that Romney isnt laughed off the stage in a GOP primary means that the GOP has no idea what it stands for.

People have to start realizing that there is no free lunch. Universal health care has been a chimera for years, a delusion. All that variations of the concept have done is drive health care costs even higher. No one can tell me that Medicare/Medicaid hasn't done that; we've seen it in action for years and it is nearly bankrupt. I think it won't even take four years to bankrupt the country if Obamacare passes. The cost estimates are way off, they don't even begin to predict how much it will cost over the next ten years. The real costs will be much higher.

Chris| 3.19.10 @ 8:56AM

Exactly, Larry. We have so many citizens in this country who are delusional when it comes to the costs for anything. When has the government taken over ANYTHING and run it efficiently?

Ken (Old Texican)| 3.16.10 @ 6:48PM

Larry you are precisely correct.

But,
it is worse than that. The "cost" is our sovereignty as a people.
...First the doctors are enslaved, then the rest of us.

If you were a successful medical doctor, what would you do?
I think I might begin accepting "barter"...or cash only... while I take a vacation/sabbatical.

How would you like to be operated on a few years down the line...by an "affirmative action surgeon"?

RINO Romney is just RNC business as usual.

I don't trust him.

I agree with you all, plus...
I won't be a happy camper til obama and his communist ilk is all dead, defunct, deceased, departed, deprived of life, dead as a dog, cold to the touch, numb, unresponsive, extinguished, inanimate, inert, barren, nothin but dust, extinct, obsolete, and pushin up daisies

Governor Romney had to work with a legislature that was overwhelmingly Democratic. Democrats outnumber Republicans in the state senate 30 to five! Romney’s veto threat was completely useless! Of course the reform cost more than he wanted, of course the legislature lacked interest in cost control.

Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts – not its king.

Romney deserves credit for being one of the few Republicans who has demonstrated (1) that he is aware of the health insurance problem, and (2) a desire to do something about it.

Cris Worth| 3.16.10 @ 8:02PM

The internet/bloggers won't let Romney escape his disastrous health care plan. Romney signed into law so he is RESPONSIBLE. No wonder he title his book "No Apologies"

RomneyCare = ObamaCare. Thanks for NOTHING, RINO ROMNEY.

We can and we must do better than this slick, used-car salesman politician who takes to lies like ducks take to water.

"Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts – not its king."

But, Romney WANTS to be KING.
Come On Mitt, stop being a flip flopper. Pandering gets down right disgusting!

Amy| 3.16.10 @ 8:16PM

Obama wants to be King

Pete| 3.16.10 @ 10:34PM

In his mind he already is.

Janie| 3.17.10 @ 12:24AM

Yes, but Romney has the hair to be King--just think how his crown will look perched upon his regal tresses.

Josiah| 3.17.10 @ 6:12AM

And some people thinks he's god and can do no wrong. Those people need help.

Scrip Bob| 3.17.10 @ 8:44AM

Come on give Romney a break we know he's a social liberal at heart but his genius is economics. Let him show his stuff and here's how:
Desperate Detroit elected officials have appointed native son businessman, investment guru and former governor Mitt Romney as minister of economic revival. The city has honored their new appointee by placing Romney’s image on the local scrip…Detroit Cheers. Romney will allow the local scrip to pay for abortions on demand, pay-for-view pornography in Detroit hotel rooms, illegal immigrant landscapers and has offered local residents a tax deduction for scrip donations to the Detroit branch of Planned Parenthood.

Yo - AS webmaster!

What's with the often-jumbled time chronologies of posts?

What's with the kiosk posts as well?

Get serious about being a polished forum.

Nobama| 3.17.10 @ 12:26AM

Yeah, AmSpec--what Yosemeti said!

Nick| 3.17.10 @ 9:44AM

Yosemeti Sam,

The chronologies are not jumbled.

It all depends on how many "replies" are made. The more replies there are, makes it harder to keep track of which reply goes to which comment.

The National Bill will fund Abortions and would hire @ 12,000 IRS - Federal Employees. Just yearly costs assuming $150,000 per person/ employee, the yearly costs to tax payers will be $1.8 Billion. The Administration and Congress do not value Tax PAYERS though they earn their salaries / benefits on the back of Tax Payers. They should and must throw the bill in Garbage Can.
