The Spectacle Blog

We're still two weeks away from April 1, so this is evidently no joke:

Prominent conservative commentator and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson will join CNN as a political contributor, appearing primarily on CNN's new show John King, USA¸ the network announced Tuesday.
Erickson, a self described "obsessive news junkie" who grew up in Dubai and rural Louisiana, will also provide perspective and commentary on other programs across the network . . .
"Erick's a perfect fit for John King, USA, because not only is he an agenda-setter whose words are closely watched in Washington, but as a person who still lives in small-town America, Erick is in touch with the very people John hopes to reach," said Sam Feist, CNN political director and vice president of Washington-based programming . . .

Speaking of "a perfect fit," Steven Benen throws a fit at the liberal Washington Monthly. The very idea of CNN hiring a conservative blogger -- how dare they!

No wonder Erickson spent last month bashing birthers instead of focusing on the resurrection of Obamacare. Here comes the next David Brooks. When you step into the liberal bonanza, moderation and liberalism is soon to follow. It's like CNN is just buying him out, so Red State will go out of business, and all that's left is another weenie "conservative".

Erickson had every right to shut down the birthers. They are looking like kooks more and more and do nothing but hurt conservatism.

astonerii| 3.17.10 @ 12:11AM

He had the right to, it is his website. But he did more than shut down the kooks, he stamped out the constitutional implications that having a President of the United States of America that was not in fact illegible for the office to be in office. Erickson is now a complete and total establishment persona, and with that, he has ceded and credibility he may have once enjoyed in the pursuit of restoring America to its core principles, and it shows in how he handled the birthers and constitutionalists on his web site.

As an example, stating that there should be a mechanism in place for future elections that actively and transparently confirms the eligibility of persons who wish to be placed on the ballot was grounds for being banned. It has nothing to do with Obama, other than the fact that the mass media failed to do the job of vetting Obama, which then shed light on a potential problem in our method of choosing our elected officials. Until that point, the media always did an exemplary job of digging into the past of most presidential candidates, enough so, that Americans felt assured of who they were voting for.

Why would he do that?

Red Phillips| 3.17.10 @ 9:02AM

SoCon, see my link below. Erickson is what I call a "taint phobic." He is more concerned with distancing "conservatism" (and hence himself) from any sort of "taint" than he is with opposing liberals. This is a common and easily identifiable type among movement "cons."

Another weasel like Brooks and Frum.

Red Phillips| 3.17.10 @ 4:16PM

He is actually to the right of Brooks and Frum. I am sure he considers them RINOs. But his opinions are all well within the bounds of mainstream respectability.

SoCon| 3.17.10 @ 4:24PM

I'd always thought he was conservative; sounds like he's going a little squishy.

Nytstriker| 3.17.10 @ 9:00AM

One thing is for sure, if CNN hired him he is not a conservative. Wake up everyone.

D| 3.16.10 @ 3:25PM

Erick Erickson? I have news for CNN; he is not going to be a draw. Nobody would know who he is if Rush had not mentioned Redstate a few times. I bet the first thing he does when he gets on CNN is trash Rush as a matter of first rites.

Jenfidel| 3.16.10 @ 3:32PM

Erickson loves him some Mitt Romney and really doesn't like Sarah Palin.
Coincidence that ChickenNoodleNews would want someone like that?

Margie| 3.16.10 @ 8:32PM

No coinkydink at all.

Gone_Rogue| 3.16.10 @ 6:43PM

I love me a Liz Cheney, Dick Cheney, Charles Krautheimer and Bill Kristol, but find Sarah from Wasilla an illiterate dingbat...a wild Alaskan dingbat!

I will judge Erickson based on his commentary...a lot better than the Fox News actresses....passing as "reporters" and "analysts."

Nobama| 3.16.10 @ 7:05PM

'Fess up, troll--you know you FEAR Sarah from Wasilla because she's a threat!

Why pick on Fox News women when there's the clown Contessa Brewer making as ass out of herself everyday?

Nytestriker| 3.17.10 @ 8:59AM

Come on, at least be honest Gone_Rogue, you aren't conservative so you trash all that is conservative. As with all of you pretenders, when you have nothing of substance to say you rely on insults.

JmsA| 3.16.10 @ 10:12PM

That should be an interesting juggling act. Mr. Erickson recently posted an essay in Redstate alluding to, if memory serves, taking a leap of faith and landing on his feet. I wonder if this move to CNN has anything to do with it.

astonerii| 3.17.10 @ 12:17AM

Well, he has a real job now. One that will add to the value of CNNs bottom line. One that will increase the credibility of an incredulous CNN perhaps? I guess the name of the game it to play faux conservative, then turn on conservatism to make a few bucks. I am sure the growth will take about 6 months, and come around the end of primary season, he will have grown out by a large amount. Erickson may talk a good conservative game, but he is as weak as any RINO out there. His take down of anything to do with birth certificates is indicative he has no moral core for which he would not sell out.

Yosemeti Sam| 3.16.10 @ 10:50PM

This will boost CNNs' viewership from what?

25 - to 26?

BTW - reportedly CNNs' Cafferty and Sanchez have police records of hit and runs.

Only the best - from CNN.

LOL.

Red Phillips| 3.16.10 @ 11:32PM

Sorry RSM, but Erick is not the kind of "conservative" we need. He is a cookie cutter movement "con" who banned Ron Paul supporters from his site and recently banned birthers. (I'm not a birther, but I'm an anti-anti-birther.) He is more concerned with purging anyone to his right than he is opposing the left.

http://conservativetimes.org/?p=4821

astonerii| 3.17.10 @ 12:18AM

Absolutely right.

SoCon| 3.17.10 @ 12:36AM

Is he like that Charles Johnson guy at Little Green Footballs?

Red Phillips| 3.17.10 @ 9:05AM

No he is not as bad as Charles Johnson. No one is as bad as Charles Johnson.

sisters| 4.22.10 @ 5:41AM

I'm not a birther, but I'm an anti-anti-birther...
