The Spectacle Blog

Last night Danny Tarkanian, a candidate for the Republican nomination to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), held a conference call. Tarkanian offered his well wishes to Reid and his family after yesterday's car accident left the senator's wife and daughter seriously injured. He then went on to make the case for why he should be Reid's Republican challenger.

Actually, the opening argument was made by Erick Erickson of RedState, who argued that nominating candidates like Tarkanian was important to pulling the Republican Party and the country to the right. I asked Tarkanian to identify areas that made him more conservative than his principal primary opponents. While he allowed that there wasn't much room between him and Sharron Angle, he did identify a few areas he said distinguished him from Sue Lowden.

Tarkanian says that he is to Lowden's right on taxes, charging her with voting for tax increases as a Nevada state legislator, including the "Nevada jobs tax." He also said that while she criticizes Reid for not bringing home enough bacon to Nevada, he opposes pork barrel spending. On abortion, Tarkanian says he has always been "staunchly pro-life" while citing newspaper reports saying that Lowden favored taking the pro-life plank out of the Republican platform in 1996. Lowden is running as a pro-life candidate this year, a fact Tarkanian "appalud(s)."

Tarkanian also said that Lowden has changed her mind about Harry Reid. He said that Lowden had donated to Reid in the past and been quoted by Nevada newspapers as saying she had voted for him. Tarkanian says he never believed Reid was good for Nevada. He also committed to supporting the repeal of Obamacare if it is enacted and addressed charges that he was soft on gun control, arguing that he never supported a ban on assault weapons.

If there isn't much difference between Sharron Angle and Danny Tarkanian, why does he spend his time making a case against Sue Lowden. The truth is Danny has no record to back up his conservatism. Sharron Angle has a record to back up her conservative credentials. Sue only has one term in the Senate and as Danny points out her credentials are not all that conservative.

I have spent the last three days attempting to have a dialogue with Mr. Muth on his TarkTales site. I have posted a multitued of article references and candidate quotes. At every turn he takes my information and references down. Even after I complied with every demand he made. Though he does leave up his requests for information making me appear to have not responded. His final post stated: "Start your own blog to tout your own candidate, Bob. You don’t get to use my platform to campaign for your candidate. It’s like walking into someone else’s house and throwing your coat on the floor and putting your feet up on the furniture. You have the right to free speech; however, you do not have the right to use my soapbox to exercise your right.". Isn't that a blog that people can comment on? For a man who is supposedly all about the truth (i.e. Muth's Truths) he seems to want to hide behind his blog and not allow those reading to see the opposing side. Another interesting point is that in his bio of the "Tark Slayer" and then later in our initial battle he has repeatedly stated that Sue Lowden, in his opinion, has the best chance to beat Reid. He has never once written that she is the BEST CANDIDATE. Is that what Nevada really needs?

LOWDEN ON REID:
Lowden 2010: Lowden says her positions opposite of Reid's to fix the country (RECORD COURIER/Jan. 15, 2010)

Reality: LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL/Oct. 1, 2009
… (Lowden) former Reid supporter …... In the 1980s she and her husband, casino owner Paul Lowden, donated $8,000 to Reid over several election cycles.

RECORD COURIER/Jan. 15, 2010
Describing Nevada as a “center right” state, Republican Senate front-runner Sue Lowden says she will replace Harry Reid in the U.S. Senate by appealing to a broad spectrum of Nevadans, not just a few groups on the right.

She said she supported Reid in the past when, “he was a blue dog Democrat.”

NOTE: “Blue Dog Democrat” is a term referencing members of the Blue Dog Coalition. The coalition began in 1994 during the 104th Congress. The Blue Dog Coalition describes itself as a group of moderate-to-conservative Democrats committed to financial and national security, favoring compromise and bipartisanship over ideology and party discipline. There is no evidence or records showing that Harry Reid was ever a part of the Blue Dog Coalition.

LOWDEN ON TAXES:
Lowden 2010: As a U.S. Senate candidate, Sue Lowden signed a pledge to oppose "any and all tax" increases. As a Republican party official, she denounced mandatory fees as "a tax by another name." (LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL/Jan. 23, 2010)

Reality: LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL/Jan. 23, 2010
But as a state senator 17 years ago, Lowden voted to impose taxes and fees on things from slot machines to water distribution. She also voted for changes to an employment tax that increased revenue an estimated $7.9 million, a vote her campaign now says wasn't a tax increase but a "matter of fairness."

And it was in a Jan. 14, 2009, letter to Republican legislators that Lowden, then chairwoman of the state Republican Party, characterized mandatory fees as "a tax by another name." Yet several times in 1993, during her first session in the Legislature, Lowden voted to impose higher taxes or fees on everything from limited liability corporations to water distribution to slot machines.

Lawrence, who reviewed descriptions of the bills in question from the Nevada Legislative Appropriations Report, said at least four of the bills Lowden voted for could be clearly classified as either a tax increase or imposition of a fee that's akin to a tax.

Oh and do not forget that Danny donates his money to democrat Shelley Berkley another gun hater who is more liberal then Harry Reid.

So that shoots your argument.

Bob Hastings| 3.23.10 @ 3:17PM

Danny's Shelley Berkley Donation:

Shelley Berkley and Lois Tarkanian are long time friends. Lois currently is a city councilwoman in Las Vegas and is a Democrat. That has been repeatedly acknowledged by Danny. Shelley Berkley served on the UNLV Board of Regents from 1990 to 1998. At the end of the 1991/1992 season the issues surrounding Jerry Tarkanian and the NCAA were boiling over. UNLV was attempting to remove Jerry Tarkanian as Head Coach of the basketball team. Shelley Berkley and one other member of the Board of Regents were the only ones showing public support for Jerry Tarkanian. Ultimately Jerry Tarkanian was released from UNLV. Several years later Shelley Berkley asked for a donation to her campaign, Danny, as a way to thank her for her support of his father, gave a one-time donation to her campaign.
A note those who would like to point the finger at Jerry Tarkanian’s coaching controversies. Following Tarkanian’s forced resignation in 1992, Jerry sued the NCAA for harassment over his 2 decades of coaching. In 1998 the NCAA settled out of court for $2.5 million.

Read a little closer:

There has been a controversy surrounding Danny Tarkanian and his stance on the 2nd Amendment. Danny is in full support of the 2nd Amendment and will defend it as your Senator. There are those who are trying to paint Danny as against the amendment as well as the NRA. This is simply not even close to the truth. His official position on the 2nd Amendment is as follows:

“The Second Amendment guarantees citizens the fundamental right to bear arms. I was happy to see that right affirmed in District of Columbia v Heller. I also agree with two-thirds of the State Attorneys General that this fundamental right should apply to state and local governments as well and I hope the U.S. Supreme Court decides the upcoming case correctly. I also agree with Congress’ recent vote to respect concealed weapons permits across state lines if the individual complies with local concealed weapons laws.”

This controversy has been pushed by the Lowden campaign . Here is the real truth. All information can be confirmed online. During the Secretary of State election Danny Tarkanian had a volunteer named Dan Burdish. Burdish, on his own, contacted the Brady people and asked for an endorsement and robo-call. When the call took place the NRA immediately dropped Danny’s rating. Burdish even admitted in the Washington Post (Dec. 16, 2009) article “Danny, as far as I know, knew nothing about it”. Unfortunately by the time Danny found out about the robo-call it was too late. The NRA will not issue new candidate ratings until later this year. For the record Mr. Burdish is now Sue Lowden’s PAID Political Director. Wonder how this story made it to the Washington Post in December??? Below are links to the articles, that when followed, show that Danny was not involved in the robo-call. He only was the one who was affected by it. There is also a link to an article about Burdish.

As a side note, Mr. Burdish has tried to make the claim that Danny’s mother Lois Tarkanian asked him to set up the call. THIS IS NOT TRUE. We spoke with Danny on this very issue. Danny has asked his mother about this. He says “my mother has swore to me she had no involvement with the Brady endorsement and never discussed it with Burdish”. Furthermore, according to Danny Lois has never, in three campaigns, ever been a part of any strategy discussions or decisions. Burdish has motive to lay it off on someone else.

For the sake of argument let’s say it was true. Lois Tarkanian, according to Burdish, came to him asking for help setting up the robo-call. Burdish has the following experience: Co-Owner of Car Doctor in Las Vegas , Head of the Nevadans for Tax Restraint PAC, Executive Director of the Nevada Republican Party and currently Sue Lowden’s Political Director. With all of this experience he should have known a robo-call endorsement from the Brady people would be a death blow. Any conservative worth their salt would. But instead of taking that information to Danny he moved on his own to set up the call (remember Burdish was quoted as saying “Danny, as far as I know, knew nothing about it”). Logically it makes no sense to blame Danny. It is obvious that Burdish somehow used his pull as the former Executive Director of the Nevada GOP to get this done. Burdish is scrambling. He knows he screwed up and has no justification for his error except for ignorance.
