GOP Doing Quite Well

Having watched every minute of the health care summit, I have to disagree with my co-bloggers. I think that Republicans have been, generally speaking, handling this very well. I've been very critical of the GOP throughout the health care debate, but Republicans have consistently made fact-based arguments on why President Obama's plan will make our health care system's problems worse, presented other ideas, and made the case for scrapping the current highly unpopular bill and taking a different approach. Paul Ryan just completely eviscerated the Democratic claims that the Senate health care bill would contain costs and reduce deficits, outlining the accounting gimmicks that Democrats used, as well as the actuarial study by the Department of Health and Human Services that found the Senate bill would actually increase health care spending. Chuck Grassley, while not the whiz kid that Ryan is, followed up by noting a CBO report that found Democrats cannot double-count the savings from the Medicare cuts to claim it will both reduce deficits and extend the solvency of the program both at the same time.

Conservatives need to chill out. The Democrats have lost this argument on the merits. A new CNN poll finds that just 25 percent of Americans want Congress to pass a bill along the lines of the House and Senate bills. Nothing I've seen today makes me to believe that this will change. The only question now is whether Democrats can convince enough of their members to take suicide votes to ram through legislation that has been overwhelming rejected by the American people.

LGreen| 2.25.10 @ 3:48PM

To: really? Since the GOP is the super-minority in both houses, why would anything they say be given merit? Why is Obama bothering to pander to them in the first place? What makes them so scary to the dems? -could it be that their arguments have merit?

Asha| 2.25.10 @ 7:54PM

I don't think President Obama is just pandering to the republicans, I think that he is trying to get them to work with him. The one point that Paul Ryan made that I agree with is that the fact that there is something wrong with our health care system, the cost are at all high. I am a supporter of President Obama, I supported the healthcare bill on the exterior, but when I saw the details, I don't think that what he is intending to reform will occur, although I personally believe he has good intentions, it won't help the problem. I hope that our president and his democratic colleagues come to their senses and just start over and see what can be done to create good results. I sincerely hope that both sides of the isle, come to a resolution and think what is good for the American people at large, and not what will help them win the election. President Obama is stuck on passing this bill, becuase it was the major issue of his campaign, and I feel that the republicans are not supporting him, because it is dependent on their future. I guess that is just politics at play.
I hope president Obama takes Paul Ryan's offer to begin new on the health care reform, and find solutions and not create more problems.

Alan Brooks| 2.25.10 @ 3:46PM

Agreed; as the military, ceaseless bivouacs.
Dream on.
Dream on 'til your dreams come true.

Tim| 2.25.10 @ 3:46PM

I fear that at the end of the day, the GOP will come home,to announce having traded the family's cow for some magic beans...

If we avoid that, it was a success.

Alan Brooks| 2.25.10 @ 3:51PM

We DO need optimists, Tim.
But it's unending maneuvers nevertheless.

Margie| 2.25.10 @ 3:49PM

Hear! Hear! to you, Mr. Klein, and to the Republicans!
The liars on the Left trying to pass this fraudulent welfare healthcare bill are being seen for what they are!
The American people get to see the CLEAR and GOOD difference between the 2 Parties.
More votes for the Republicans in upcoming elections.
The Left will NEVER learn that lies don't work. Ha! Good for us.

Alan Brooks| 2.25.10 @ 3:49PM

Yep.
It's just maneuvers.
Kto kto. Who whom.

martin j smith| 2.25.10 @ 3:50PM

really? I disagree--the Democrat Party sound weak and unable or willing to deal with specific issues. Repubs sound composed and civil--Obama sounds un -presidential. Wghen Repubs read specific portions of the OBH bill and our president refuses to want to deal with these then Obama looks bad. But, I am willing to wait for the 2010 elections and see who is correct. I will be against the dems especially if the go "reconciliation".

Albert A. Turner| 2.25.10 @ 4:59PM

Thanks for your report, Mr Klein. I was unable to view the show. Sounds like the "ambush" backfired.

NVA Patriot| 2.25.10 @ 5:02PM

Thank God for your enemies.

Barak Obama made the republicans look great from the moment he walked in the room and lowered the prestige of the office of the President to the level of ordinary congressmen and senators. McConnell - whom I detest as leader - helped by turning the floor over to his deputies further lowering Obama down the protocol pecking order. It was bad atmospherics compounded by Obama stating his time did not count as part of Dem time. Biden helped by interrupting the President. What Chief Executive tolerates a number 2 who interrupts? No one in ANY organization I have been a part of would interrupt the number 1 when speaking. All of this makes the Obama team look weak.

Add to the fact that the Republicans including our most famous RINO did not try to be 'bipartisan' and basically concede principle and you have a Dem failure on multiple levels.

They can't say Republicans did not try. Obama said republicans had plans. Obma elevated Republicans and indirectly demoted Harry and Nancy. Dems won't change the public's mind. Dems' won't stiffen the spines of wavering Dems to follow Obama's orders on his charge of the light brigade. With the announcement of Obama's Plan B, Obama effectively told his army to charge the machine gun nest while simultaneously, behind the chargin Ary's back, offering a chance to start over. What 'Army' charges under those conditions? More likeley the 'army' will turn on its officers.

By 30 March Obama polls are under 40% on their way to 30% for the duration of his single term.

Rush thought the repubs did very well, too.

Summit – preliminary roundup… « Time for Thorns links to this page. Here’s an excerpt:

preliminary roundup… leave a comment » Several folks at American Spectator  watched bits and  pieces of the time-waster,  but Philip Klein courageously watched all of it and thought  Republicans did rather well.   I agree that some of the tactics employed by His Oneness  ranged from the unimpressive to the downright arrogant. I thought  Paul Ryan was especially effective,  and I admit to being…

Bob| 2.25.10 @ 7:02PM

I'm usually critical that Republicans are not fact based and don't know the data. However, based on facts, I thought both Ryan and Kyl were standouts and made excellent points. From the look on Obama's face, I think he knew they had the better argument as well. When are people going to pay more attention to Ryan on both this and on Medicare reform????? While I'd never vote for Palin, I would pull the lever for Ryan in a heartbeat....

Georgie| 2.26.10 @ 3:51AM

Take a long walk off a short pier, asshat.

Bob| 2.26.10 @ 9:39AM

Now that was intelligent. You must be a Palin supporter....

Georgie| 2.26.10 @ 2:53PM

Pettiness is not attractive and neither are you.

Bob| 2.27.10 @ 9:17AM

That was funny... Have you looked at your comment????

Georgie| 2.27.10 @ 3:15PM

Have you looked at yours? There was no reason to mention Palin--only a petty asshat with an ax to grind like you would think differently.

Obama’s Health Care Summit at Blair House: Big-time Snoozeville, Bring a Pillow — Hi links to this page. Here’s an excerpt:

…the best of it, since the Democratic talking points are old and busted (the media parrots them all the time) and the Republican ideas haven’t gotten nearly as much air time.
