Katherine
Eastland attempts to save book cover art from the Kindle with
a new blog:
Here I pair books with outfits because books are not only to be
read but worn. Indeed, they can be our most intelligent, artful
accessory. When thinking about books in this way, it then makes
thorough sense to consider the look of your book in concert
with your clothes before popping out the door. After all, one
of the Latin terms for book is vade mecum—meaning “come with
me.” Celebrating the design of beautiful books is especially
important to do now, since electronic readers are stripping
books of their unique covers and replacing them with a
snooze-worthy shell of white plastic.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, I sort of agree with her. She probably will end up teetering a little too far into the fashion side of the equation, but I'm a big fan of good book cover design. Back in college, in the first and nearly only time I ever entered a design contest, I won best of show with a book cover design.
Digital distribution will slowly kill off some of the beauty of good book cover design, although not as surely as it will make record/tape/cd cover and jacket design into an afterthought. Which is a shame.
