The Spectacle Blog

While campaigning in 2000, U.S. Senate candidate Tom Campbell called for a Palestinian state with a capital in Jerusalem, said that Israel received too much funding from the United States, argued that President Clinton was too pro-Israel, and recalled receiving a condolence phone call from Palestinian terrorist Yasser Arafat after he injured himself during a visit to the region.

The revelations come from an article that appeared in the October/November 2000 issue of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs about Campbell’s run for Senate in 2000 against Dianne Feinstein.

According to the article:

Smack-dab in the middle of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, Republican Rep. Tom Campbell, who is campaigning for Democrat Dianne Feinstein’s seat in the Senate, was busy meeting Southern California voters.

The congressman from Northern California met with Muslim voters Aug. 17 in the home of James and Darlena Price. Although he’s running on the Republican ticket, some progressives have described Campbell as to the left of corporate-backed Feinstein.

Campbell said he is for women’s rights, campaign reform, eliminating the use of secret evidence and sanctions on Iraq.

“I believe in fairness and if there is a state of Israel, there should be a state of Palestine,” he said. “Foreign aid should go to needy states and not where powerful influences want it to go. I would like to have the United States known as a just country, not just a powerful one.”

He also criticized President Clinton for being too one-sided in favor of Israel:

When asked his opinion on the status of Jerusalem, Campbell opined that both Israel and Palestine should claim Jerusalem as their capital.

“Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, but it’s wrong to say it can’t also be the capital of Palestine.”

Alluding to President Bill Clinton’s comment that he is considering moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, he stated, “In order to be helpful to the peace process, an intermediary shouldn’t criticize just one side.”

And he recalled a friendly exchange with terrorist leader Yasser Arafat:

As a member of the powerful House International Relations Committee, Campbell says he goes to trouble spots in Africa or the Middle East while many of his colleagues choose to go to Paris.

“The people of Palestine should have a nation and they should be able to trade with Jordan and I voiced this opinion on the House floor,” he said. “Conditions in Gaza are dehumanizing, particularly the cattle runs Gazans must walk through to exit or enter Gaza.”

He recalled a visit to Ramallah, Bethlehem and Gaza. He had bumped his head on a taxi door and the next day while he was in Damascus, Representative Campbell received a phone call from Yasser Arafat.

The Palestinian leader offered condolences that the congressman had been slightly injured in his country. Campbell’s reply was: “This makes me the first American to have shed blood in your country.”

Now, there are people who believe that United States foreign policy is too reflexively pro-Israel. If Campbell wants to run a campaign this year making the point that we need to rethink our relationship with Israel and have an open debate about it, so be it. Rep. Ron Paul, for instance, doesn’t run campaigns arguing that he’s a strong backer of Israel — he’s open about his views about U.S. foreign policy. But instead, Campbell is passing himself off as a strong supporter of Israel, and dismissing any questioning about his past record as “bizarre.”

UPDATE: Jennifer Rubin has more, including details on Campbell’s praise for Alison Weir, a firece critic of Israel who has lately been pushing conspiracy theories about Israelis harvesting Palestinian organs.

'He also criticized President Clinton for being too one-sided in favor of Israel"

See, you ought to appreciate Clinton more-- he was the master politician, though not necessarily a statesman. His satyriasis? hopefully it wasn't as bad (though it probably was) as JFK's.
By the way, JFK inherited it from his dad-- these people are genetically wired to be goatish.

S.L. Toddard| 2.23.10 @ 3:25PM

My. Philip Klein sure seems obsessed about whether such-and-such a candidate is "pro-Israel" enough.

Alan Brooks| 2.23.10 @ 8:15PM

We agree on one thing-- there will not be peace in the Mideast until many have perished. First
a) carnage
b) peace

So, Israel has to moved out of harms way. not that you care about Israel, Toddard-- or even the Arabs.

S.L. Toddard| 2.24.10 @ 8:06AM

"So, Israel has to moved out of harms way."

I'd say, rather, that they have to move those who would harm them out of their country, and expel all the Arabs from Israel.

"not that you care about Israel, Toddard-- or even the Arabs"

Correct.

Clinton's foreign policy lacked a strong response to terrorism and his policy towards Israel refelcted that attitude. He was not pro-Israel an much as not strongly anti. Those who lean towards support of Israel take a view of terroism in general opposite that the current administration or of Jimmy Carter. Those people also tend to at least morally support Democracy in many other nations and movements when they rise up--uch as Iran for instance or the Ukraine etc
So it is for me not only supporting of Israel but support of democracy as opposed to totalitarianism. So, I would not support someone who does not support Democratic ideals ( not imposed by anyone ) but homegrown as it were.

C'mon, surely you can come up with a more purposely deceptive title than that. You may not always get Tom Campbell's dry humor, but it's there.

Perhaps you missed it in his debate with Steve Poizner in the gubernatorial race against two self-funded multi-millionaire candidates. Tom Campbell joked that he would not use his vast wealth from the Campbell soup dynasty to fund his campaign. Next, you'll probably say that Tom Campbell was issuing fraudulent financial data, punishable under Sarbanes-Oxley.

The Tom Campbell that I know is one of the most even-handed, fair-minded people that I've met. His pro-Palestinian comments do not mean that he is anti-Israel.

RE ALEX...... from researching comments around the blogosphere I would say most americans agree with him unfortunately

Margie| 2.23.10 @ 10:54PM

Don't you believe it, Adam! These Leftists purposely hang out in the sphere to make it look that way. Thankfully they are out numbered.
Make sure you research your candidates thoroughly before voting. When you hear someone say the are a conservative, just ask them how they feel about Israel.. if all sorts of bilge starts pouring out of their mouths, run!

Red Phillips | 2.24.10 @ 8:50AM

"When you hear someone say the are a conservative, just ask them how they feel about Israel.."

So Israel is the litmus test of American conservatism? Interesting.

Margie| 2.24.10 @ 12:32PM

Lying again "Dr.?" What I said was if bilge starts pouring out of their mouth, run!
Yes, the kind of bilge that pours out of your mouth concerning Israel. Anyone who hates Her is not a conservative, but an anti-Semite and no friend of America.

Red Phillips | 2.24.10 @ 2:30PM

"Anyone who hates Her is not a conservative"

First of all Margie, wanting the US to be neutral does not mean someone hates Israel any more than it means they love Palestine. But you seem to have difficulty with subtlety.

Second, with this sentence you just made Israel a litmus test of conservatism. Which is what I accused you of doing in the first place and you called me a liar for.

Margie| 2.24.10 @ 5:47PM

You need to repent.
You continually obfuscate and believe you are getting away with it. You're not.
If you came to your right mind you wouldn't play these games. You would know that there IS no neutral.
As a typical unbelieving Leftist, you promote that fantasy.
You are either for or against Israel.
Just as you are either for or against Jesus.
If you are for Him, you would be for Israel, whom He loves.
Not to mention not faulting America for terrorism. No true Christian can do that. You do.

Inge| 2.24.10 @ 2:58AM

There will be no peace in the Middle East; which began when Abraham sent Hagar, and her son away as illegitimate. It will end when Jesus Christ returns.
Jerusalem has never been any of the Arabs property, it was given to the Jews by the Almighty God, and whoever think about dividing it against God's Will will only cause more horror.

martin j smith| 2.24.10 @ 8:05AM

by verbally and publically--say in case of Iran supporting the Democratic Movement and condemning the brutality against proters for example. Here is another interesting twist on elections: Supporting free, fair and honest elections--of course that would apply to us too n'est Pas ? I do not think a regime ( meaning a dictatorship--And by the way Obama is resembling one every day ) you call arms and draw swords. But articulating disapproval and opposition to undemocratic rulers--that ok with me--when there is violence against opposition and when there are behaviors such as phony elections. Now, when a Dictatorial state makes moves that are mililarily belligerent such as Venezuela,.Iran and others--you at least need to be ready,be prepared in case you need to.

I wonder if the moderators will allow the following comment to be published...

For anyone who wants accurate information, I thought I should correct Mr. Klein's reference to me.

I have written a great many articles about Israel-Palestine; two of them are detailed, footnoted investigations of Israeli organ harvesting and theft, a reality that the Israeli media have covered in considerable depth – in fact, most of my information comes from published Israeli articles.

Following the publication of my articles, Israel's chief pathologist (still among Israel's highest paid public officials) admitted that for years he had been taking Palestinian body parts. People may wish to read my articles on this topic, and others, for themselves.
