The Spectacle Blog

Political and cultural website the Root has released a list that lumps Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, and Michael Steele along with world dictators and other mass murders as "Black Folks We'd Like To Remove From Black History."

The online magazine explains that, "As happy as we are for the nation to get its yearly reminder that black people do exist in the context of American history, there’s a growing list of characters that has us harking back to Zora Neale Hurston’s famous words: 'All my skinfolk ain’t kinfolk.' Indeed, while we love our own, we sure do dream of erasing a few of them from the history books. Some are politicos, others are pop culture figures, but they all share one common attribute: They’re embarrassing."

The list of "embarrassing" blacks includes O.J. Simpson, Beltway sniper John Allen Muhammad, Idi Amin, François "Papa Doc" Duvalier, Robert Mugabe and Rafael Trujillo. But it lumps them together with Thomas (the second black Supreme Court justice), Steele (the first black chairman of the RNC), and Keyes (nutty, yes, but really?).

The Root, which lists Henry Louis Gates as its editor in chief, describes itself as providing "thought-provoking commentary on today's news from a variety of black perspectives."

Perhaps its time to add, "unless your perspective is politically conservative, in which case you're on par with serial killers and mass murdering dictators."

UPDATE: Michael Moynihan has more.

Oh brother. You'd think they'd at least get their historical reference correct. Z. Hurston was a conservative Republican, a Taft for President supporter.

Hard to tell whether the ignorance or insult is more disturbing.

Robert Cooper| 2.22.10 @ 10:21PM

Zora N. Hurston, if she was a Republican, it was when the party clearly was the party of Lincoln. The majority of Black people of Hurston's era were Republicans. It was not until F.D.R. that Black people made the great political re-alignment. Perhaps you need to recheck your history, especially about BLack people. Mr. "Interested Conservative." Excuse me while I puke at your ignorance.

Roy| 2.22.10 @ 11:26PM

Wow. OP = non-sequitur = has nothing to do with the article.

Response = Has nothing to do with the OP's "point" and instead engages in a lot of irrelevant drivel about his own superiority.

It's like two talking-point machine guns firing along opposite but non-intersecting lines.

Jeremiah| 2.23.10 @ 2:32AM

WE are the party of Lincoln, clown; democrats owned slaves.

Are you stupid, ignorant or did you forget?

Michael| 2.24.10 @ 9:57PM

Except of course when Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, and other Southern Democrats who were so pissed at LBJ for signing the CRA of 1964 that they left and became Dixiecrats and then joined the Republican party. They used the Southern Strategy ever since (look it up). Something tells me you're the one that is stupid and ignorant of history.

JimH| 2.23.10 @ 7:57AM

Somewhat ironic considering FDR's alliance with southern Dems and the Klan.

SFC MAC| 2.23.10 @ 6:29PM

Republicans lead the Civil Rights Movement. The KKK WAS started by Democrats. Blacks today are more racist than whites ever were.
You lefties are so desperate you carry around a whole deck of race cards to throw, when your “arguments” fail. No one outside of the leftwingnut moron demographic can really appreciate the vacuous stupidity.

Missy| 2.23.10 @ 8:39PM

"A deck of race cards." I like it. Good post, MAC.

Michael| 2.24.10 @ 9:59PM

Who does the KKK vote for today, genius? It definitely isn't for liberal Democrats. By your logic, the KKK voted for Obama.

ZerObama | 2.25.10 @ 12:51AM

I have no idea, Michael, I don't even know if the KKK votes at all--please elucidate me.

Do you know whom Marxists and Communists vote for today? Obama. In fact, many of those Marxists and Communists are part of Obama's administration.

Imagine that, bonehead.

Tim| 2.22.10 @ 4:09PM

Michael Jackson? Al Sharpton? Jesse Jackson?

Pete| 2.22.10 @ 4:18PM

Clearly, they are ignoring the most obvious current embarrassment.

Carol| 2.22.10 @ 8:18PM

Obvious to whom? Embarrassment to whom?????? If you're speaking of Pres. Obama, I have not been embarrassed by this man in the least.

Faffnir| 2.22.10 @ 8:47PM

Well, you should be.

But, give it time, give it time.

Smitty| 2.22.10 @ 9:48PM

Obvious to anyone still breathing, Kool Aid drinking doofus.

Michael| 2.24.10 @ 10:00PM

I know Pete he's so "uppity" right? Damn, those blacks trying to achieve something instead of knowing "their place"

ZerObama | 2.25.10 @ 12:53AM

Bigot. This blog is about liberal racism toward Justice Thomas, assclown. Own it.

Michael| 2.25.10 @ 11:42PM

No, retard, Pete is the bigot. Why don't you actually READ the comment he put and the responses below it. Ok, inbred?

or half an embarrassment anyhow....

Margie| 2.22.10 @ 5:02PM

Henry Louis Gates... hey wait a minute!
Isn't he...?

Marc Jeric| 2.22.10 @ 5:26PM

HL Gates? Isn't he the director of Harvard's DuBois Institute? Komrad DuBois who received the Stalin Prize (or was it the Lenin Prize?)? Yes, that's the one, komrad Gates. He was arrested for attacking the policeman after his return home from China! Was he soliciting a Chairman Mao Prize there?

JimE| 2.22.10 @ 7:49PM

They must be looking for negroes without the negro dialect.

SoCon| 2.22.10 @ 8:04PM

Henry Louis Gates isn't worthy of shining Justice Clarence Thomas' shoes.

Yeah, I said it--I meant it, too!

Margie| 2.22.10 @ 8:26PM

You've got that right SoCon!
If anyone ought to bow, it ought to be Gates (or Obama) bowing before Justice Thomas.

Robert Cooper| 2.22.10 @ 10:29PM

Clarence Thomas is a field negro. They never wore shoes. He was just another happy darkie, happy to work on "ole Marse'" plantation.

There has only been one Black Justice on the Supreme Court: Thurgood Marshall. Uncle Thom-Ass does not deserve the follow such a stellar jurist.

Roy| 2.22.10 @ 11:27PM

Go home, you leftoid, racist jackass.

Jeremiah| 2.23.10 @ 2:29AM

Field negro? Considering you democrats practice 'plantation politics' you would know something about being a field negro, now wouldn't you?

The filthy, dying inner cities are your liberal plantations, and the poor blacks who 'live' there are your slaves.

Those black folks would be better off working on the Southern cotton plantations of yore.

Hateful bigot, you liberals are the true racists--you don't give a damn about the black people.

Robert Cooper| 2.23.10 @ 5:27PM

Jeremiah:

How do you know that I am a liberal. I happen to be a Republican. Better off on a plantation? Typical response for a mindless dolt. Too bad you whites can not face the new realities of the world.
Waste of my time to respond to such drivel as what you wrote.

Jeremiah| 2.23.10 @ 5:51PM

Sure you are, porch negro, sure you are.

Liberals have tricked blacks into living on inner city plantations--and they're nastier than the southern plantations of yore.

Liberals and liberal policies stink--we'll see you on November 2, 2010. Loser.

SFC MAC| 2.23.10 @ 6:34PM

You happen to be a "moby".

"An insidious and specialized type of left-wing troll who visits blogs and impersonates a conservative for the purpose of either spreading false rumors intended to sow dissension among conservative voters, or who purposely posts inflammatory and offensive comments for the purpose of discrediting the blog in question. "

Now, go away and let the adults talk.

Missy| 2.23.10 @ 8:52PM

Cooper the troll attacked Justice Thomas in a particularly vicious manner--no way a conservative would say that and no way that's going to cause dissension here!

Ugly troll only discredits himself; nearly impossible for a degenerate liberal.

ProudTexan| 2.24.10 @ 12:08AM

You're not even close. Clarence Thomas was a brilliant student who graduated with honors from Yale who learned the evils of affirmative action. Can you imagine the frustration of being a brilliant person who is seen to have only obtained your degree because a goverment rule required it because you are a black and the government said you needed "help" to achieve it. He did it on his own with no assistance from the government but tthe stigma stuck as it does with all black gratuates. That's why black leftists hate him. He speaks out against that stigma. Intelligent, overachieving black poeple face the most unfair disadvantages in this country. They not only have to prove they are worthy of their education, they have to prove they didn't get it simply because of their race. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Missy| 2.24.10 @ 3:55AM

Not only is Justice Thomas brilliant, he's got integrity--a quality hate-filled liberals know nothing about.

Michael| 2.25.10 @ 11:45PM

Wrong, LIAR. http://www.encyclopedia.com/do.....32601.html

Try getting your facts straight. Justice Thomas benefitted GREATLY from affirmative action.

Thomas then entered Yale Law School, from which he received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1974, graduating towards the middle of his class.

Michael| 2.24.10 @ 10:01PM

Yes, Clarence Thomas barking about affirmative action, when he benefited from affirmative action himself. It wasn't till later that Mr. Long Dong Silver, hated it.

ZerObama| 2.25.10 @ 12:56AM

More liberal lies from liberal A-Holes. Guess Justice Thomas should know his place and not get uppity, right, loser?

Liberals are hate-filled hypocrites.

Michael| 2.25.10 @ 11:41PM

The above was satire you moron. That is what the comment I was replying to was implying. By the way Thomas said HIMSELF that affirmative action gained him admission to Yale. Try to use the neurons that you have left.

JimE| 2.23.10 @ 12:44AM

Cooper,
If that is the case then obama is nothing but a lazy, shiftless, welfare negro.

Robert Cooper| 2.23.10 @ 5:34PM

Well, JimE:

I am breathless waiting for you to explain why that is. He is yours, mine, our president - elected clearly by the populace, not five conservative toads on the Supreme Court.

Jeremiah| 2.23.10 @ 5:53PM

So, Obama's a lazy, shiftless, welfare negro who got elected POTUS. Ain't America great, Cooper?

SFC MAC| 2.23.10 @ 6:40PM

Still on that "Bush stole the election" spiel?
He won get over it.
We have to wait until 2012 to get Obamessiah kicked out. Until then, we will fight his socialist "hope and change" crap and watch as his polls continue to dive.

shanecomeback| 2.23.10 @ 9:34AM

This whole discussion makes me think of recent reports of African American inner city teens who decry success in school as "acting white." If getting good grades and succeeding in school is "acting white," what is acting black?

Missy| 2.23.10 @ 9:58PM

Unfortunately for the Black community, "Acting Black" is exactly what the liberals want them to do. What a shame.

DrCruel| 2.24.10 @ 12:53AM

After reading most of these comments - many both hateful and inarticulate, it seems that all Republicans seem to emit sounds from the same sphincter: the only difference is the malodorous vapors that are released.

Damn, is it impossible for a Republican to speak with an independent voice? Moderation? Independent ideas? In today's climate, it seems like a hopeless cause - a chimera. Yes, I am indeed a Republican. But this cabal is not my party. So write your pithy diatribes. I put my money that we have eight years of President Obama. Deal with it. I have nothing left to waste on neanderthals that occupy this cesspool. Castigate freely.

You are not worth a response....
