Zora N. Hurston, if she was a Republican, it was when the party clearly was the party of Lincoln. The majority of Black people of Hurston's era were Republicans. It was not until F.D.R. that Black people made the great political re-alignment. Perhaps you need to recheck your history, especially about BLack people. Mr. "Interested Conservative." You're not even close. Clarence Thomas was a brilliant student who graduated with honors from Yale who learned the evils of affirmative action. Can you imagine the frustration of being a brilliant person who is seen to have only obtained your degree because a goverment rule required it because you are a black and the government said you needed "help" to achieve it. He did it on his own with no assistance from the government but tthe stigma stuck as it does with all black gratuates. That's why black leftists hate him. He speaks out against that stigma. Intelligent, overachieving black poeple face the most unfair disadvantages in this country. They not only have to prove they are worthy of their education, they have to prove they didn't get it simply because of their race. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Thomas then entered Yale Law School, from which he received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1974, graduating towards the middle of his class.
