Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has vowed to avert a Republican filibuster to pass changes to the health care bill within 60 days using the reconciliation process.

The Hill reports:

Reid said that congressional Democrats would likely opt for a procedural tactic in the Senate allowing the upper chamber to make final changes to its healthcare bill with only a simple majority of senators, instead of the 60 it takes to normally end a filibuster.

"I've had many conversations this week with the president, his chief of staff, and Speaker Pelosi," Reid said during an appearance Friday evening on "Face to Face with Jon Ralston" in Nevada. "And we're really trying to move forward on this."

The majority leader said that while Democrats have a number of options, they would likely use the budget reconciliation process to pass a series of fixes to the first healthcare bill passed by the Senate in November. These changes are needed to secure votes for passage of that original Senate bill in the House.

"We'll do a relatively small bill to take care of what we've already done," Reid said, affirming that Democrats would use the reconciliation process. "We're going to have that done in the next 60 days."

It's hard to know whether this is more tough talk for the Democrats, but it's important to keep in mind that any bill would still face a tough road to passage in the House.

This is Dem baloney to appease the looney left. Of course he is saying 60 days. After April they can't use reconcilation.

Dan| 2.20.10 @ 3:13PM

Yeah, so I don't think Philip Klein knows what the "nuclear option" is.

All I can say is, I'm sorry, but the American economy is going to turn around and be prosperous again.

I'm sorry but we are going to turn our attention away from unsustainable forms of energy and focus on clean, sustainable ones (there will always be a need for oil and the oil barons will always get to be the richest on the block so give it a rest I don't care who's for or against theories). Support clean energy jobs or get out of the way.

I'm sorry but we will and should get health care reform, maybe like the Hawaii/Mass. type of coverage. I guess Brown of Mass. does not want the rest of America to have what his state and people support.

I'm sorry but we should stop fighting a war on "Terror" and fight a war against "Terrorist". Leave the Middle East alone. I have never bought into the theory of "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here". Ever since 9/11 we have been fighting them over here as well. Torturing them only makes more of them. Killing them does not. But we don't need a full blown war and an army to do that.

I'm sorry but Wall Street and the Banksters are going to have to play by rules. Not too many rules....but some rules, and they don't get to police themselves any longer. And if they too big to fail then Americans can and should do something about that. It's called transfer your money.

I'm sorry, but the illegal aliens in this country who are contributing to the American economy much more than they cost, will get a fast track to a green card. We are not going to break up family's who have children who do not even speak Spanish, and send them to a country that they have never been to. Now I will give you that we need to police and control our borders, but that's because of drugs, not working people.

I'm sorry but we have the best form of government in the world. And if you want change, hop on board, here we go. If you live in America, then your probably doing pretty good....get over yourself and help.

Capt Blasto| 2.20.10 @ 5:23PM

Really sorry boy? Really? WE DON'T WANT ANY OF THIS. Get it through your sick facist head. None of this is going to go by the people. You can hide it with your sympathetical media but the truth is getting out. There is so much wrong with what you said that all I will say is everything you said is either wrong or a lie or both. We don't want your change. We want you to stop cheating. If what you wanted was so welcome in America then why is everything done behind closed doors? Why does the media not cover it? Why do you and yours lie about it constantly? No one who pays taxes likes any of your crap. Just the freeloaders like you. Screw you. See you in November.

Lullaby's, Legends and Lies| 2.20.10 @ 6:18PM

Mike: You know what I'm sorry for? You buddy, I feel sorry for you, and your pathetic way of thinking. Why don't you get over yourself, and your unrealistic plans for our Nation, they're proven losers, and everybody but you knows this.

CalMark| 2.20.10 @ 7:59PM

The things you embrace are all against the spirit and Constitution of this great nation.

If you hate this country, leave. There are lots of socialist "paradises" in the world--go live in one. And when you realize how awful it is, don't come back. We don't want you.

Remember the rage that read to the "Do Not Call" list? Remember the tsunami about amnesty in 2007? Whether or not this bill passes, Mike the America-Hater--you ain't seen NOTHIN'.

Olliander| 2.20.10 @ 4:21PM

That's some great "bipartisanship" these Democrats believe in. This is like November-December 2009 all over again. Apparently, the election of Scott Brown means nothing.

If the Reid/Obama/Pelosi junta wants to ram this through, so be it. This seems more like a Hail Mary pass from a party desperate to cobble together some sort of "achievement" to unite behind, rather than a unified piece of legislation for the betterment of the nation.

Idiots.

martin j smith| 2.20.10 @ 4:46PM

Its a declaration of political war. OK skip the pseud
"so called health care summit" skip the so called "bi-partisan deficit commission" lets start the 2010 and 2012 campaigns right now. Oh, one more thing--no more efforts or talk of bi-partisanship with this gang of Democrat left thugs.

Pete| 2.20.10 @ 5:05PM

Reid has nothing more to lose. He has no chance of re-election, so why not go out with a bang? The Mocha Messiah will make sure he gets paid one way or another for falling on his sword.

PCC| 2.20.10 @ 5:27PM

If the Dems are serious about this, then it will be as if they are showing a giant middle finger to the American public.

Actually, I don't believe they have the votes any longer in the Democratic caucus to pass it. Members of congress can read polls, even if the Three Musketeers can't.

However, if they do pass HCR in reconciliation, then they will get absolutely slaughtered in the 2010 congressional elections.

Lullaby's, Legends and Lies| 2.20.10 @ 6:12PM

PCC: They're going to get slaughtered in the 2010 mid-term election anyway, that's why they've got nothing to lose, trying to force this monstrosity through in this most desperate way. But I agree with you, I don't think they've got the votes in either chamber anymore, to even get a simple majority, to force this through with reconciliation. Nothing is going their way anymore, which is all "right" by me.

The Giant Middle Finger, is going to be given to the Democratic Party, gift wrapped by the American People come November (can't wait).

NVA Patriot| 2.20.10 @ 8:40PM

All,

The question is will the house pass the Senate bill? I think not. If they do manage to pass it by some miracle, then we will repeal it. I was at teh 9/12 rally when the media said only 30,000 people showed. If they pass this, 9/12 2011 will have 10M people on the Mall and the Obama will attempt to call the National Guard out. If this congress shreds the constitution with health care as they are intent to do, then we'll have to resort to the words in our other founding document the Decalration of Independence, you know the part about, "... But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these [us]...."

The constitutional response to this nonsense is of course 2010. However it's merely Act I of a three act play. Act II is 2012 and Act III is the close with a 70 Seat Republican/Tea Party Senate. 70 Senate Seats means you win without parlimenatry tricks.

With 70 Seats, YOU DISMANTLE THE NEW DEAL MONSTROSITY. YOU DISMANTALE HHS. YOU DISMANTLE EPA. YOU DISMANTLE THE GREAT SOCIETY WAR ON POVERTY APPARATUS. You Restore our freedom.

All this talk of Healthcare is doing is burning deep into the American political psyche that progressive/liberal democrats and RINOs can NEVER be allowed to have ANY political power or authority.

Anonymous| 2.21.10 @ 9:57AM

Give it up, Democrats. America doesn't want your healthcare "reform" junk.

Richard Baker| 2.21.10 @ 10:07AM

Hope Harry has a new gig lined up after November. Maybe one of the casinos need a new Greeter.

As Nancy Pelosi once said "If we had the votes, we'd [already] be voting."

It's almost a good thing that Reid/Democrats are still proclamating this politically insane promotion of their healthcare bill. The more they talk, the greater the number of conservatives that will be elected in November+. Keep on talkin', you DUMBA**&S!!!!!!!!

Am I the only person to notice that the federal government is totally broke and at the same time they are considering this huge expansion of entitlements?

It's really remarkable that an organization such as out federal government that is so inept at management is able to convince anyone to take on more tasks.

Does anyone really realize the consequences of our current fiscal situation and how this health care boondoggle is going to accelerate the negative aspects of that?

Yosemeti Sam| 2.22.10 @ 11:04AM

" Damn the torpedoes , full speed ahead" ?

LOL.

""I've had many conversations this week with the president, his chief of staff, and Speaker Pelosi," Reid said during an appearance Friday evening on "Face to Face with Jon Ralston" in Nevada. 'And we're really trying to move forward on this.' "

Bizarre. In the same week Obama announces his health care plan, and plans a bipartisan summit?

This is either a trick - almost certain - or one more example of Reid's psychotic break with reality (completely certain).

Whichever is the case, it can't be good.

So, here we go again, having to spend yet more time to keep the Democrats from pushing the country over a cliff.

It's going to be a long nine months.

JIM| 2.24.10 @ 7:29PM

Only God can give man rights not congress or the president. I have a right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness given to me by God . I do not have a right to health care, housing, a job, food ect.... Neither congress or the president has the right to assign these to me or take from me and assign these rights to others. If I want these I have a right to work hard and obtain these through my own efforts. God gave me this right. President Obama is not God neither are the other elected officials. I think this is spelled out very clearly by the genus of our founders. This is why America is great and better than any nation now or ever before. If people want to live under a government that provides rights not given by God then they should leave America, there are numerous places they could go where rights are given by politicians to the population by taking rights from others in the same population. Hard working people from all over the world flocked to America because here they have the opportunity through their own efforts to obtain what ever they want to make them happy and secure. They could do this without the fear of the government taking the results of the efforts and giving them someone else as happened in the country the fled from. Wake up or America will just be something that is talked about in the past.

bbunk| 4.6.10 @ 4:20PM

Of course, any serious follower of politics would know the truth (and difference) about the "nuclear option" and reconciliation.

That you don't know the simple facts on these marks you as a simple repeater of what others tell you, not bright enough to discover things out for yourself.

To prove my point, if you choose to reply, and you may want to consider that carefully, you will disregard what I've said and attack me personally. At no time will you attempt to look into this and determine your mistake.

After all, facts are too tricky a thing to use when making a point. Talking points and opinions are much easier to write, and disprove.

Regards.
