The New York Times is in full hysteria mode thanks to
all of the severe winter weather, coming on the heels of all of
those climate-"science" scandals.
"It is perhaps not coincidental that the snowstorm scuffle is
playing out against a background of recent climate
controversies: In recent months, global-warming critics have
assailed a 2007 report by the United Nations'
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and have claimed
that e-mail messages and documents plucked from a server at a
climate research center in Britain raise doubts about the
academic integrity of some climate scientists. Earlier this
week, Rush Limbaugh
and other conservative commentators made light of the fact that
the announcement of the creation of a new federal climate
service on Monday had to be conducted by conference call,
rather than news conference, because the federal government was
shuttered by the storm."
Soooo..now Man doesn't cause the weather. Climate skeptics do.
Back away slowly, cancel your subscription, make no
eye-contact...

Hey Baghdad Bob,
The hockey stick graph was thoroughly debunked years ago. Fact
is, the planet is actually cooling. No amount of data tampering
by the IPCC is going to change that.
Bob| 2.11.10 @ 2:34PM
Hey Sguild -- Do you even understand the hockey stick issue? The
progenitors of this THEORY said they could reproduce the hockey
stick effect through the use of random data. This didn't have
anything to do with the fact that the globe is warming. In fact,
they would agree that the globe is warming. The issue is how fast
is it warming. This is an important issue because if it isn't
increasing rapidly, it is highly unlikely that this was caused by
man -- AND THAT IS THE ISSUE.
There is always variability in the data. Recently, we've had
decade long cooling in the early 1900's and the mid-1900's before
increases resumed. Get it, about once every 50 years we have a
decade of cooling. This is happening again now. There is no
scientific reason to believe that this is a change in the long
term trend, only a continuation of prior historical short term
cooling trends.
Personally, having been trained in mathematics, I think the
hockey stick effect may be somewhat overstated. But that does not
change the fact that we have a long term global warming effect.
Like I said before, AmSpec -- and Palin conservatives -- are a
data free and fact free zone devoid of intellectual capabilities.
Sguild| 2.11.10 @ 11:52PM
Ok...so...if we don't know how rapidly it is "warming" or how
much humans are contributing to this "warming", maybe we
shouldn't be signing onto any global agreements to redistribute
TRILLIONS of dollars of wealth. Especially since several of the
pro-AGW scientists at the heart of the AGW data have been "hiding
the decline"...so to speak. Not to mention the wild exaggerations
by the IPCC that have been coming to light in recent weeks.
SoCon| 2.11.10 @ 2:38PM

ACynic| 2.11.10 @ 3:23PM
The earth has experienced numerous ice ages and periods of global
warming. There have been warming periods - well before the
industrial revolution - that were warmer than today's climate and
exhibited higher levels of CO2. . Each of these warming periods
ended in an ice age.
Every ice age has ended in global warming.
Why did this happen?
No one knows.
Science is not able to explain the historical climate, much less
model it.
If you cannot explain the historical climate, there is no way one
can predict the future climate.
The best evidence seems to be that the activity of the sun, the
earths orbit and earths precession as it rotates, seem to
coincide - rather robustly - to major climatic shifts on
earth.
If earth is now in a warming trend, it is just one of the
hundreds that have preceded this one.
By the way, scientific consensus is politics, not science.
Also, when any group states that "the debate is over," you know
that the "fix is in," because the purpose of this is to shut down
debate.
ncatty| 2.11.10 @ 5:34PM
Well done. No one can explain how humans caused the Medieval
Warming Period, when temperatures were much warmer than now.
Until that explanation is given, forgive me for saying that the

From Part 3 of the Pro-Global Warming Hoax UK Gaurdian's 12 part
series on ClimatGate, a key graph:
"Three hours after receiving Folland's response, Briffa sent a
long and passionate email demanding caution over the use of
Mann's hockey stick. 'It should not be taken as read that Mike's
series is THE CORRECT ONE,' he warned. 'I know there is pressure
to present a nice tidy story as regards "apparent unprecedented
warming in a thousand years or more in the proxy data", but in
reality the situation is not quite so simple... For the record, I
believe that the recent warmth was probably matched about 1000
years ago... and that there is strong evidence for major changes
in climate over the Holocene that require explanation and that
could represent part of the current or future background
variability of our climate.' This last point is important. Briffa
was saying not only that the hockey stick might not be right, but
that any graph of the last thousand years could not be taken to
represent the limits of natural variability."
