Peyton Manning is a future Hall of Fame quarterback and
deservedly so. Nothing that happened last night will change that.
He played a nearly flawless game with most of the mistakes,
particularly dropped passes, being made by the supporting cast
around him. It just so happens that Manning, a quarterback known
for his judgment and poise, committed the single most costly
error with an interception that was the dagger for the
Indianapolis Colts. The only bearing this will have is on his
competition with Tom Brady -- in reality, it is premature to
crown either of them while they are both still playing at a high
level.
But Drew Brees isn't mentioned in the company of Brady and
Manning often enough, probably less frequently than his successor
in San Diego, Philip Rivers. Instead Brees has quietly racked up
an impressive set of
stats, including four consecutive seasons of passing for well
over 4,000 yards. In 2008, he passed for 5,069 (!) yards. This
past season, Brees completed 70.6 percent of his passes and threw
34 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.
Last night, Drew Brees reminded everyone that he deserves to be
included in the list of elite quarterbacks currently playing in
the NFL -- and somewhere closer to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning
than Tony Romo or Donovan McNabb. Brees may have even made the
case for being the subject of some Hall of Fame talk in his own
right.
Amazing victory. A franchise that has been a long running joke
has gone and done it. Good for them. Who dat?

Great game - the only way to beat Manning is to keep him off the
field, which the Saints succeeded in doing.
Hope you aren't naming the greatest quarterbacks of the current
era and deliberately excluding Favre. Ok, he's become a bit
obnoxious, but the guy is a winner & he had a great season.
And let's not forget Jay Cutler. Not only is he a great passer,
but he practices diversity: He doesn't care what color your
uniform is, he's gonna complete passes to everyone on the field.
The above was written by a disgruntled Bears fan. Rex Grossman
anyone?
Brett Favre is a great quarterback. I hope he comes back for one
more season. But he can be Cutler-esque with interceptions at
very inconvenient times.

True dat.
I just keep wondering what the Bears would be like in the Lovie
Smith era if they had an elite quarterback. Or even one who could
play the game.
I believe they've had 25 quarterbacks in the time the Packers had
one: Favre.
Of course the Bears have myriad problems (not the least of which
is that Smith shouldn't be a head coach). For one thing, they
can't tell the difference between real talent and duds (Rex
Grossman?????).
I keep thinking it's too bad Don Knotts died about 10 years ago -
he'd look no worse behind center in Chicago than Eric Kramer. Or
Cade McNown. Or Shane Matthews. Or Rick Mirer. Or Peter Tom
Willis. Or - oh forget it.
On second thought, the Late Mr. Knotts might still get a call.

The pictures of Brees and his son on the field after the game are
priceless (Here's one: http://bit.ly/c8f26v). Great game by the
Saints!

Is it merely coincidence that in this post season, both Manning
and Favre sealed their team's fate in the closing minutes with a
dumb passing mistake that only a rookie should make?

Drew Brees didn't pass for that many yards, as the record is
still Marino's 5084.
I fat-fingered the numbers: I meant 5,069 yards rather than
5,096.

Drew beat every team that had a winning Super Bowl QB this year
(Eli, Brady, Warner, Favre & Peyton) and wins his first Super
Bowl as well as being MVP for the game. His team finished with
the #1 offense in the NFL and Brees finished with an NFL record
70% completion rating and was #1 for NFL QB's for the QB rating.
Don't anybody tell me he is not the best QB in the game right
now. By the way, last year Brees came 16 yards short of beating
Marino's record, but his team was 8-8. This year, less yards but
a Super Bowl victory which is one more than Marino! I'll take the
Super Bowl victory over Marino's record anyday.

5. Bret Favre
…Super Bowl loss. The American Spectator’s Joseph Lawler, for instance, has denounced the “perennially overrated Peyton Manning [for] throwing a deliciously inexcusable pick six.” The Spectator’s W. James Antle III, is less partisan and more charitable toward Manning, but still faults the Colts’ QB for committing “the single most costly error, with an interception that was the dagger” for his team. In fact,…
