Granholm: Stay the Course

In her final State of the State (yes, it should have been a real S.O.S.) address on Wednesday night, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm told her constituents — suffering under 14.7 percent unemployment — to just keep on keepin’-on.

In her final State of the State (yes, it should have been a real S.O.S.) address on Wednesday night, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm told her constituents — suffering under 14.7 percent unemployment — to just keep on keepin’-on (hat-tip to Mike LaFaive at Mackinac Center):

Everything we do in these next 11 months should be linked to the economic plan we have followed these seven years: diversifying the economy; educating our people; and protecting citizens in a time of transition.

Detroit News editorialist Henry Payne spells out that stellar record today at National Review Online:

Granholm entered office on the tired heels of a three-term Republican with a wave of good tidings as the state’s first female governor. Beautiful, silver-tongued, and Harvard Law–educated, Granholm was a young pol with little executive seasoning. Supremely self-confident despite her inexperience, Granholm raised income taxes (as the state’s economy literally and figuratively headed south), “invested” billions of stimulus dollars in infrastructure that she predicted would create tens of thousands of jobs, mandated renewable-power standards, and backed them up with millions ingovernment subsidies to transform Michigan from “the Rust Belt to the Green Belt.” In her 2006 State of the State address, she promised that “in five years, you’ll be blown away.”

Four years in and it’s blowing hard, all right. Michigan’s unemployment rate has more than doubled, to over 14 percent. Yes, the state’s per capita income drop from 20th in the nation to 40th has tracked a historic restructuring of the state’s auto industry, but Granholm’s Obamaesque policy prescriptions have been anti-growth while fueling budget deficits to record highs.

Fast-forward to about 2:28 for the appropriate analogy:

Granholm: "Good-bye, Michigan. Better luck to the next tax-and-spend governor you elect." Glug, glug, glug.

and I hear rumors she'll head off the the Supreme Court to continue her intellectual assault on a nation wide basis.

Floyd Looney | 2.5.10 @ 3:44PM

These people are crazy. Stay the course? Will Obama be saying this while running for his third term?

A friend of my wife's roomed with Granholm at Harvard Law. She said that even then, Granholm was laying out her career plan, which would end in her election as governor. It worked out exactly as she described it then.

So let that be a lesson to all: never, NEVER elect to high office someone who has wanted the job since forever. They want it for the wrong reasons.

Good thing Michigan is shaped like a hand. It can wave goodbye as it sinks into the morass of its own making. Too bad. Liberals ruin another beautiful state. Bu-bye.

Richard Baker| 2.6.10 @ 9:12AM

Only a liberal could look at the disaster which is Michigan and say "Stay the Course." My dog has more of an idea about what to do than this loony broad.

She is following a grate tradition of democrat guvernators.
In New Jersey, we just got rid of Jon Corzine, Granholm in pants, and good riddance.
Califawnia is going the same way with democrats:
Down, Down, Down.
No matter what any democrat does, Obama included, they just cannot help themselves, they just lather, rinse, repeat. Endlessly.
We need to round them all up, enroll them in business management classes and give them all franchises such as McDonalds.
Problem is, they won't follow rules, regulations or directions and they will be out of business in a year or two.
Kinda like GM.
How's that commercial go?
"Not your father's Buick?"
Maybe if it was, they would stand a better chance of staying in business.
My father had five Buicks: 2 Specials, a Wildcat and two Skylarks.
The last two he bought new and paid cash.
Great cars.
I wish I had the '69 Skylark.

Whether it be Michigan, California or any other liberal Democratic stronghold, eventually the American voters wake up to the realistic truth that liberal governmental policies do not economically/financially work; and their invest in government boondoggles are nothing but WELFARE [and not stimulative of anything economically]. Liberal Democrats are, as Obama told Joe the Plumber, all about WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION, which is now evident from their non-stimulus spending [basically spending to keep/maintain governmental programs/payrolls in tact]; their healthcare insurance reform [taking insurance from the HAVE'S and giving it to the HAVENOT'S]; their energy proposals that essentially increase taxpayers' funding of the government so that increase welfare can be provided; their tax policies that essentially rob Peter [taxpayers] to pay Paul [welfare recipients]; etc. None of it ever helps the middle class taxpayers, and their proclamations of such are nothing but BULLEXPREMENT!!!!!

The Obama/Pelosi/Reid triumverant is actively doing the best it can to destroy this country so they can then establish a country based on their socialist, marxist, elitist ideals. Congressman Tom McClintock made an eloquent speech about the economy that I posted at the link below. Take a look. Eye-opening.

As I remember, Slick Willy had the same lifelong goal. Agree with your sentiment 100%.

Liberal states and their handlers, are the reason why I left Michigan and never returned, and never will for that very reason. I guess you just can't fix stupid, now can you.
