In light of my Lou
Dobbs story from the February issue, I meant to comment on
Dobbs's little immigration
summit with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Some people seem to
think that having Dobbs on board will make it easier for Congress
to pass amnesty, which now has failed under both Republican and
Democratic domination in Washington. But whatever credibility
Dobbs has on the issue comes from his reputation as an unstinting
foe of illegal immigration. The old Lou Dobbs could have
convinced people that the enforcement provisions in a
"comprehensive" bill were serious. But if Dobbs is seen as
wobbling on the issue -- or, as Schumer puts it, Dobbs "is
changing his views on immigration" -- it will be a no-go.
