The Spectacle Blog

Osama Bin Laden has picked up on the cause of climate change as a way to attack the United States, according to a new videotape released through Al Jazeera. On the surface, his timing may appear to be particularly unfortunate as the science underpinning alarmist claims about man-made global warming has been exposed as fraudulent and misleading.

However, the “climategate” scandal involving emails from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) in Great Britain that has unfolded in tandem with the exposure of fallacious statements in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports has gone largely unreported. Moreover, it is evident from his remarks that Bin Laden is more concerned with regulatory control than he is with scientific integrity. (There’s a lot of that going around.)

The New York Times and other outlets picked up on this point in its coverage of the Al Qaeda leader’s remarks in the following paragraphs:

“In the message broadcast on Friday, Mr. bin Laden veered away from his traditional vows to inflict death and destruction on the United States, and instead discussed climate change, globalization and monetary policy in a message that he said was directed to `the whole world.’”

“He called for a worldwide boycott of American goods and the dollar. He faulted the United States for failing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, which sought to curb global warming by restricting greenhouse gas emissions.”

Bottom line here is that environmentalism, right from beginning, has always been about constraining and restricting America’s economic and military activity. It has provided the U.N., and more recently the E.U., with ability to attack American independence and sovereignty on the sly.

“Even Bin Laden recognizes the inherent propaganda and potential destructiveness to the U.S. of the entire global warming movement,” Climate Depot’s Marc Morano observed. “Soon, only a few fringe political figures — like Bin Laden — will still spout the nonsense climate claims that were once accepted as mainstream.”

Media organs that have reported uncritically on the more extreme claims of the environmental movement now have a special obligation to deprive Bin Laden and others of scoring propaganda points.

Here are a few key facts from the Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP) to help get them started.

·        In mid-August, after repeated requests for such data under the Freedom of Information Act, the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (CRU), one of the three international agencies that calculate global temperatures, announced that it discarded the raw data used to calculate global surface temperatures. The CRU action renders independent review and verification of the temperature trends published by the CRU impossible - a clear violation of principles of science and the Freedom of Information Act

·         In October, at the 2009 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, Dr. Don Easterbrook presented graphs demonstrating how tree ring data from Russia showing a cooling after 1961 were truncated and artfully disguised in IPCC publications. The artful deceit, so exposed, indicates that the IPCC Assessment Report 4 (AR4) contains deceptions rendering the entire document scientifically questionable.

·         In November, emails from the CRU were leaked to the public. These emails reveal efforts to suppress independent studies that are contrary to IPCC conclusions of human caused global warming. Thus, the IPCC scientific review process has a systematic bias of an unknowable magnitude in favor of human induced warming.

·         In mid-December, the Russian Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) reported that the Hadley Center for Climate Change of the British Meteorological Office (Met Office) had probably tampered with Russian climate data and that the Russian meteorological station data do not support human caused global warming. The Met Office collaborates with the CRU in reporting global temperatures. The reported global surface temperature trends are unreliable and probably have a strong warming bias of an unknown magnitude.

·         In January, Joe D’Aleo and E. Michael Smith reported that the National Climatic Data Center (NOAA-NCDC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies (NASA-GISS) dropped many meteorological stations from their data bases in recent years. The dropped stations, many of which continue to make appropriate reports, are generally in colder climates. [For a detailed report see item #1 below.] The actions by NOAA -NCDC and NASA-GISS make their reported temperature trends unreliable and likely to have a strong warming bias of an unknown magnitude. [NOAA-NCDC and NASA-GISS are the two other organizations that report global surface temperatures.]

Who would guess a Arabian Wahhabi lunatic could be the newest Climate Change spokesperson.
Obviously Bin Laden is insane in all philosophies.
The good news is the new bumper stickers are just in from Pakistan.

Save The Planet or Osama will Jihad your A$$.
Jihad is for Gaia as well as Allah

Mooney --

Point of order.

IN this country, we don't listen to terrorist leaders to stake out policy.

We don't, for example, seize on something a terrorist leader endorses (as though it were offered in good faith) and identify it as something our political opponents would support for political gain.

A free country, a great country, a strong country does not piss its pants with fear that a terrorist attack will disrupt the workings of its judicial system. It does not run away from its own Constitution out of fear that terrorists may not like it.

A free country, a strong country, a great country does not stomach a faction within it accusing one of its great political parties as somehow related to terrorists because a terrorist leader mouths -- for his own reasons -- some idea.

This sort of thing you are doing is profoundly un-American. You're a low fellow, without much heart.

You here are essentially accusing anyone who thinks diferently than you do about a scientific problem of being a terrorist.

Where's your sense of shame, you fucking rat?

Dixie Pixie| 2.1.10 @ 7:54PM

You need to loosen up Liberal Reader.
A keen sense of the absurd is what you need.
Try to be “Green” and grow one.

Have you considered that Osama bin Laden may have come to the conclusion that Wahhabism is not working out for him. After all the philosophy just makes him a air-to-ground munitions magnet. Can you think of a better reason to change religions to the worship of Gaia than a volley of hellfire missiles. Another reason is Al Gore got a Nobel prize and all the lovely lady eco-acolytes he could ever want. Why not change to a safer cause.

Next on “Animal Planet” Osama Bin Laden hosts “Monsters Inside Me”.

Pete| 2.1.10 @ 6:37PM

Global warming "believers" wish to exploit and weaken the US and are thus dangerous. Let's see, if I were to compile a list: Osama, Obama, the UN, all progressive democrats....

Liberal Reader| 2.1.10 @ 6:56PM

Today Osama Bin Laden announced that 2+2=4. Although it was a tranparent attempt to advantage Republicans in the U.S., many conservative columnists and on-air blabbers lept at the chance to point out that Democrats had made similar claims ....

Pete| 2.1.10 @ 7:12PM

Follow along.

1) Osama wishes to hurt the US in any way he can
2) The "solutions" to the fake problem of "global warming" would hurt the US economy, thereby weakening the country
3) Obama throws his support behind global warming (don't cost nuthin')

Or is it because the weather is warm where he lives? (doubt it as he probably spends most of his time in caves)

So, if a scumbag like Osama can figure this out, what is the matter with Obama and his progressive buddies? They are either criminally stupid, thoroughly corrupt, or downright anti-American.

I think it is a healthy combination of options 2 and 3...with a bit of 1 thrown in that will thankfully lose them their jobs.

Liberal Reader| 2.1.10 @ 7:55PM

Pete --

I'm sorry. Your logic just is so weak, I scarcely know where to begin, and if you think this kind of foggy, thus-and-such kind of reasoning will help this country grow stronger and defeat Al Quaeda, you're sorely, sorely mistaken.

Your own rhetoric betrays you. It's simply impossible to tell by reading your post whether you think "progressives" are the moral equivalent of Al Quaeda terrorists or not. Talk about moral relativism!

The democratic process we revere is based upon the free exchange of ideas among people who ultimately consider one another fellow countrymen. If you don't know the difference between a liberal -- with whom you may and should strongly disagree -- and a terrorist, you're not fit or manly enough for the kind of guts it takes to engage in true politcal debate. You're one of the wee-men who will follow and demogogue and ape any position that speaks itself loudest.

JimE| 2.1.10 @ 10:07PM

LB,
You are a moron and a mindless useful idiot, Osama and Obama love shitheads like you.

Who is this LB you are talking to?
If it is Liberal Reader try “Snit-Head”.
That would be funnier and a clean hit.

LR,

It's kind of tough to reclaim the high ground here about democratic process and debate of ideas, etc...when your first post called the initial author a "fucking rat."

I made a simple, obvious point, and nothing in your subsequent post addressed the substance of mine. Let's try again. This time I will ask you a simple question: Why would Osama jump on the global warming bandwagon?

By the way, could you also answer this one so I know what I am dealing with? Do you believe in man made global warming?

Dixie Pixie| 2.1.10 @ 11:18PM

To: Pete
I think I accidentally answered your question in the above 7:54 post. Do what you will with it.

Liberal Reader is a humorless Obama Drone who is convinced of the righteousness of his cause and will not be persuaded by any rhetoric. He does however make for a great comic folie. Try to use him as such.

Just in from the “Animal Planet” channel.
Next week on “Whale Wars”, comic slap-stick erupts on the high seas as Osama and his little buddy Al Zawahiri try to train bottle-nose dolphins as jihadist bombers. Hilarity explodes when Osama discovers dolphins can not tell one ship from another under the high seas. Watch as the whalers laugh themselves silly as Greenpeace newest allies blow themselves sky high.
Episode Title is “There Osama Blows”.

Pete| 2.2.10 @ 12:06AM

I'd watch. Sounds like a whole new category: Environmental Comedy.

Liberal Reader| 2.1.10 @ 9:31PM

No, Pete, the beginning of this thread was NOT me calling someone a "fucking rat," it was Mooney attempting the rhetorical slight of hand that has grown common on the right that attempts to EQUATE the political left with terrorists on skimpy, lame grounds such as those above.

WHY does Osama bin Laden do anything?

I'm not obliged -- no civilized, reasonable man is obliged -- to account for the words of Osama bin Laden. He's a psychopath bent on dividing and making FEARFUL this country. I refuse to let my countrymen give him a helping hand.

Liberal Reader| 2.1.10 @ 9:33PM

I admit, however, now that I've had my say, that using the profanity is not advisable or all that intelligent.

But it is a far greater profanity and debasement of political discourse to assert MORAL EQUIVALENCE between people who believe in global warming and Al Quaeda. THAT I refuse to accept and cannot tolerate because it is weak and stupid.

LoFlyer| 2.2.10 @ 12:17AM

LibReader, what no one wants to admit, especially the media, is that most of the CPUSA types jumped ship to the eco-causes when the Soviet empire collapsed in 1991.
The CRU, NOAA and NASA all independently fudged the data to support their CO2 Global warming theories that produced the options of destroying western economies to support their global warming agenda.
NOAA reduces it temperature measurement sites from 6000 to 1300 used in the climate research and reporting. CRU conveniently loses the raw data supporting their man-made global warming hypothesis, refuse to release the data, and conspire to block publication of the warming skeptics data and reports. The IPCC uses unfounded scientific data from sources such as WWF, Greenpeace and other non-peer reviewed data to influence government and public opinion to their "consensus of scientific evidence" . Scientific consensus is based upon reproduction of the experiments, but with the raw data "lost" the experiments are not reproducible. How can there be scientific consensus if the experiment is irreproducible?
As for your charges of that the Global warming scam is not the moral equalivant to Al Quaeda terrorism. Bin Laden released his opinion last week supporting the global warming hypothesis with America as the prime culprit.
Copenhagen was a done-deal before the release of the CRU data and Emails. The right people were in place to do the deed. Bleed the western economies into corrupt third world governments and the UN to bring western capitalism to its knees whilst enabling global socialism.
While 911 killed 3000 Americans, just how many citizens would die from the economic impact of the unsubstantiated global warming policies? 10,000 or millions? Under your policies citizens would be unable to afford heating fuel that in the last cold snap would of killed millions.
The Global warming scam has been based upon terrorism, greed and power, supported by a liberal western media doing their best to scare the hell out of all of us.
You are a terrorist with no reliable scientific evidence to back your claims. Osama is now backing your agenda, and would gladly decapitate you given the chance.
I also note that not one eco-group has refused Osama's endorsement of global warming.
I welcome your debate on this issue.

Should we really be surprised that the Kenyan supports this sort of thing? After all, the environmental movement is the haven for anti-capitalists and former Communists. Isn't Gorbachev one of the leading lights in this effort?

Jim O'Brien| 2.2.10 @ 7:21AM

Well surprise, surprise. Obama, Usama, and Congressional Democrats are on the same page.

Don Simpson| 2.2.10 @ 2:10PM

It is quite telling that Osama has rallied to the global warming alarmism bandwagon. He has no electricity, no heat and lives in a cave, clearly he lives the IPCC solution to the american lifestyle.

Global warming is simply a more effective method for Osama to attack North America, destroy the economy without the need to hijack planes, just smart thinking on his part. The fact that the Global warming science makes about as much sense as Osama's Jihad is quite fitting. Clearly radical environmentalism and radical islam are one in the same. It's about time these two religious movements ended their schism and reunited.

I hope this gives some closure to the families & friends of those lost on that horrible day 10 years ago. I feel no elation at his death, just more sadness about the horrors we have in our world. God Bless the soldiers who carried out their duty and please come home soon and safe.

For killing Osama bin Laden, the world is praising hon president of united states, whereas some people targetting the hon president of Srilanka for killing prabhakaran. Both are killed for bringing peace
