In an interview today with New Hampshire Watchdog reporter Grant Bosse and WNTK in Manchester, Newt Gingrich said that he regrets his endorsement of Dede Scozzafava in the special election for New York District 23 in November:
“At the time, as a party builder and someone who has always been trying to help build the party, it struck me that she was the local nominee. She turned out to be a huge disappointment. And she turned out not to be frankly a loyal Republican,” Gingrich added. Responding to those critical of his endorsement, “And I think that those folks have the better of that argument.”

How political can you get?
You might have missed it, but it was boomed in January.
Farcical feminism is a decades-old phenomenon, as George Will's essay from 1970 reminds us.

What she turned out to be, Mr. Speaker, is a liberal.
We are frankly wondering what YOU have turned out to be.
Is it a bit too cold out at present to sit on a Washington D.C. park bench with Nancy Pelosi and spout nonsense about "global warming"?
You first lost your judgment. Then you lost your power.
And now you are quite rightly on the verge of losing your influence, followed in due course by the esteem of conservatives everywhere.
We do not need you, sir.

Can we please stop listening to Newt? Please...

In spite of his personal shortcomings, I have always been a big Gingrich fan. I'm glad to see him admit his poor political judgment in NY23.
LiveFreeOrDie| 1.30.10 @ 9:11PM
Really? I used to like him but it seems like he always has his finger in the air. Any recent interviews show him to be a fence-riding, say-nothing, politically correct bore. When Scott Brown won in Mass. all he could say was how great a job he (Brown) did on the campaign. Too much of a pansy mention this vote was a rejection of Obamacare. Too scared to hazard an opinion. He's the kind of scumbag career politician centrist voters will soundly reject. I hope he doesn't run.
bluecollarbytes| 1.31.10 @ 9:32AM
I still like Newt. And the Republican Party needs the full range of conservatism that includes the moderates. It even needs "calculation" in its politics, unfortunately. Newt is not the enemy, or savior. He's a harmless moderate 'little fuzz ball' that has important contributions to make to our politics. I'm glad to hear as well that he admits to making some bad sausage.
Roger Westcott| 1.31.10 @ 4:21PM
The "harmless moderate 'little fuzz ball' " is not conservative, and not harmless.
Mike| 1.30.10 @ 4:51PM
Regardless of where you resides on the political spectrum, you have to admit that it is amusing watching members of both parties trying to figure out how to positions themselves. Personally, I rather enjoy political theater.
Richard Baker| 1.30.10 @ 5:33PM
The problem with Newt is which Newt was speaking, the political junkie Newt or the Newt of 1994? The jury is still out on him.
Floyd Looneu| 1.30.10 @ 6:06PM
We can think anything we want about the endorsement but the words and attacks on conservatives from his own mouth should NEVER be forgotten.
Floyd Looney| 1.30.10 @ 6:07PM
I just misspelled my own name.
Leigh| 1.31.10 @ 5:43AM
You just made me laugh. I like you, Floyd; you are an honest man. Newt has a tendency to enrage us, and cause us to make these mistakes. Everytime I read about Newt, I am furious; I want him to shut up and go away, and you just made me laugh. Thanks!
Olliander| 1.30.10 @ 6:43PM
Yes, its good to see a politician admit he screwed up. But is it too much to ask for conservatives to cut their ties to past, and may I add, failed leadership by Republicans?
I really think Newt is in it for himself. He wants to be president, and he's seeing a clear path to try for the nomination in 2012. That would be a disaster for the Republican party.
And not for anything, but his spider sense isn't really working is it? I mean...Dede Scozzofava? On the eve of a Republican victory in Massachusetts, is Newts political radar so out of whack with the base? Wow.
Plus, he's not exactly a bastion of good behavior. I know it's bleak, but surely the Republican party can do better?

---Takes one to know one Newt.
ShyAsrai| 1.31.10 @ 7:35AM
Newt, please don't muddy the waters for 2012. Your credibility as a Republican is gone.
Our nation needs no more "McCainish" compromisers. We need, and want, people who will take a hard-line against usurpation of the powers left to the States.
DaveP.| 1.31.10 @ 9:01AM
...and look at how long it took him to say this. He couldn't come to the realization when DeDe took the Margaret Sanger award; he coudn't do so when she threw her votes to the Democrat... he hadn't retracted his judgement until he realized what the cost was to himself.
Go away, Newt. You're too transparent.
Ken (Old Texican)| 1.31.10 @ 9:58AM
I just read over at AT that Newt's 527 has raised millions$$ this past year.
No question about it, he is a brilliant man. I do think he is stuck in the 90s when it was "business as usual". I don't think he is the guy we need going forward.
Someone above mentioned "it's bleak" in terms of candidates.
One thought that keeps tickling in my mind is that our "best batters" are keeping a rather low profile about 2012, perhaps focusing upon the crucial 2010 congressional elections.
If we can't win those, decisively, I fear we will be in a civil war situation before 2012 rolls around.
I am also dreading the series of likely terrorism attacks coming.
Newt has an audience. Let's use it.
dan| 1.31.10 @ 6:22PM
Your fears are totally justified. In 2010 we are fighting for the life of this country.Newt ,as "brilliant" as he may be does not understand we are not fighting "just another party".The Democrat party has been taken over by a communist clique who wants no less than destruction of our system. There will be no more FREE elections in 2012 if we don't stop this.I've been there,I know how communist party operates,I hope we can overcome our delusions of a "fair electoral" struggle, this is CLASS STRUGGLE as defined by the Marxist theory.
It is US or Them.Do not expect any fairness from the party of Marx,Lenin,Stalin. They are playing for keeps.Do we?!
Margie| 1.31.10 @ 2:48PM
Words of wisdom by Ken, IMHO.
And one thing I admire about Newt.. he is like a walking encyclopedia and a great Historian, again IMHO. Have you ever listened to him talk about George Washington, for example? His knowledge about our Founding Fathers is fantastic. I will tell you that when Newt speaks, I do like to listen.
Run Newt Run NOT!| 1.31.10 @ 4:23PM
If Newt runs it will be McCain II. He will look like the grumpy old GET OFF MY LAWN man next to Mr. Charisma. He may be smart but he's no way near electable.
DD| 1.31.10 @ 6:26PM
If Newt has any bit of decency left in his soul he will help the conservatives to win the next elections staying into the shaddows. He can provide good ideas, resonable advise and support to good candidates.By no means he should run for anything in 2010 or 2012,he is damaged goods.
Gazinya| 2.1.10 @ 9:34AM
"In my opinion, it was PROBABLY a mistake." said Newt. Probably? Newt, this is what is missing from you and McCain and Boenher and Graham et.,al. You are professional polititians and are wealthy and the people who are enraged are not. We are too involved with trying to keep our paychecks and keeping the local, state and the most voracious vampires, the Feds out of our lives. You move around in circles that increase your paycheck. You don't see what we are experiencing because you don't live like we are being forced to live. Rush Limbaugh is wealthy. But Rush gets it. He doesn't support any party that would agree with any liberal/progressive agenda. Newt, you must stop talking and go to a gathering of people, like tea parties and listen. Open up your ears. Because right now we can't hear you anymore. What we want to know is can you hear us? You know your history but do you know us?
